Attend the
Education
Career Fair
The Education Career Fair is designed for students and graduates who are
from the Faculty of Education or interested in working in the field of
education. Whether you are in your first or final year of study or have
already graduated, the Education Career Fair is your opportunity to
network with employers, learn about your career options and get a job.
With over 80 organizations attending the Education Career Fair, students
have the opportunity to meet employers from nine different countries.
What is CaPS?
Career and Placement Services (CaPS) is the department that organizes the Education
Career Fair. But it does more that just the career fair, CaPS is where you can go to plan
your career and connect with employers.
CaPS offers:
• online job postings
• individual consultations with
career advisors
• free brown bag lunch seminars
• workshops (most are geared to
specific faculties and disciplines)
• five career fairs each year
• a Resource Centre filled with career
and work search related materials
• career forums with professionals
from the community
2
• CaPS NetWORK: an e-mail
newsletter to keep students
informed about career information
that pertains to their faculty. Sign up
on the CaPS website or at the CaPS
booth at the Education Career Fair.

Making Career Fairs
Work For You
1.
Be sure to attend the free seminar,
Making Career Fairs and Career
Forums Work for you. There is no
pre-registration required and the
seminar is free. This seminar takes
place in 2-100 SUB on Wednesday,
January 16 from 12:05 to 12:50 p.m.
2.
Find out who is attending the
Education Career Fair ahead of time
by visiting the CaPS website at
www.ualberta.ca/caps.
3.
Make a list of the organizations you
want to make contact with at the
career fair.
4.
Research the organizations that are
of interest attending the career fair.
5.
Prepare questions for each
organization. For example:
a. Do you currently have jobs
posted with CaPS? Will you in the
near future?
b. What skills and experiences do
you look for in applicants?
c. Do you have any suggestions
regarding courses I should take
and/or skills I should develop?
d. Does your organization provide
opportunities for on-going
professional development?
6. Practice introducing yourself to
employers. Be prepared to tell
them your name, your area of
study, and what kind of work
you are looking for.
7.
Have a resume available in case
employers ask for it. Be sure that
your resume is top-notch. Have your
resume critiqued at CaPS
beforehand.
8.
Wear ‘business casual’ clothing.
You don’t need to wear a suit, but
you shouldn’t wear jeans.
9. After the Education Career Fair, be
sure to make a list of the employers
you spoke to and the organizations
that tweaked your interest. This list
will help you follow-up during your
work search.

Alternative Careers
in Education
By Meaghan Goebel
A Bachelor of Education is one of those
degrees that will get you places, and not just
inside a school. There are entire books written on the
subject of alternative careers in education (many of which
are available at the CaPS Resource Centre) because the
skills you gain are so transferrable. Time-management,
strong communication and organizational skills, and
leadership training are all part and parcel of your
education degree which can be used inside,
but equally outside of the classroom.
Education graduates have gone on to a myriad of other
professions: police officer, probation officer, human resource
manager, educational program advisor, outreach
coordinator, park naturalist, and even adventure travel
specialist. The list goes on but what these jobs all
share is an emphasis on people skills, communication
abilities, and organizational strengths which, as
education graduates, you all share!
If you are looking for a bit of an adventure before
starting a full time position, an out-of-country
experience can be financially supplemented by
teaching English as a foreign language. This can
give a candidate practical, hands on knowledge of an
exotic and exciting teaching field, with the added bonus
of life-lessons that can only be learned away from home.
(A good place to start is: http://www.goabroad.com).
Don’t let classroom walls limit your thinking when there are so many great
options available. Come to the CaPS Resource Centre and check out these valuable
resources: 101 Career Alternatives for Teachers, Career Opportunities in Education, and, What
Can You Do With a Major in Education?
