Fallingwater and the
Laurel Highlands
October 20-22, 2016
Led by: Dave Pro, Judy
Montgomery, and Sheila
Vincent
Join the Delaware Nature
Society on this special trip
that combines nature,
architecture, and science.
Tour the Laurel Highlands of
Pennsylvania, a region of
beautiful mountains, forests,
waterfalls, and lots of
wildlife. Tour two Frank
Lloyd Wright houses
including Fallingwater, which
“promotes harmony between
man and nature through
design so well integrated with
its site that buildings,
furnishings, and surroundings
become part of a unified,
interrelated composition”,
according to the Western
Pennsylvania Conservancy.
Visit Kentuck Knob,
an example of
Wright’s usonian
design for the typical
American family.
Experience a
morning of birdbanding and birds in
hand at the
Powdermill Nature
Reserve. Visit
Ohiopyle State Park
and feel the power of the spectacular falls along the
Youghiogheny River. Enjoy birding and botany at Laurel
Summit State Park. Fee includes
van transportation from Ashland, leadership, entrance fees,
lodging, and all meals except Thursday lunch. Lodging will be
at a quiet, private lodge on a mountaintop with excellent views of
mountain ridges and forest.
October 20: Meet at the Ashland Nature Center in Hockessin at
8:00 a.m. Let us do the driving to the
Laurel Highland region of western PA.
Enjoy the afternoon walking trails at
Ohiopyle State Park along the
Youghiogheny River to find birds,
plants, and see the powerful waterfalls
and rapids. Retire to our mountaintop lodge in the evening where your
leaders will prepare dinner. Relax on
the porch, hit the hot tub, and take a stroll around the beautiful
grounds of our lodge.
October 21: Wake up to a mountaintop sunrise! Visit the Powdermill
Nature Reserve for a bird-banding
session during the height of fall
migration. See what is caught in the
nets, how to record data, and examine
birds in-the-hand. Tour the wonderful
nature center including informative
exhibits.
Visit Laurel Summit State Park to look for fall migrant birds
and wildflowers, and experience the
28-acre Spruce Flats bog, which
contains cranberry, pitcher plant,
sundew, and other plants more typical
of communities farther north.
In the late afternoon, take a tour
of the Frank Lloyd Wright house
Kentuck Knob. The design of this
beautiful house takes advantage of its
wooded surroundings, inside and out. Afterwards, walk through
the unique sculpture gardens on the grounds.
October 22: This morning, after breakfast
and packing, visit the world-renowned
Fallingwater for an in-depth tour. Set in
beautiful woodlands thick with
rhododendron, this priceless home
overhangs a waterfall, and is one of the
finest combinations of nature, art,
architecture, and imagination that you will
ever see. After this inspiring tour, have a picnic at Bear Run Nature
Preserve before heading home.

“I do still have fond memories of the
trip! I cannot imagine there is a more
informative and fun way to experience
nature in the Laurel Highlands and to see
how the natural landscape inspired Frank
Lloyd Wright’s masterpieces. The small
group size certainly made it more
enjoyable.”
" leisurely paced, relaxing trip with an
A
itinerary that featured a satisfying balance
of architecture and nature."
