LETTER FROM THE EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR
HOPE FOR EUROPE:
MISSIONS IN A
SECULAR WORLD
By Gordon Gilbey
Executive Director
Missionfest Manitoba
who made many sacrifices, and often
paid the ultimate sacrifice, in order to
be obedient to the call that God made
on their life. Through these years, the
European church took missions seriously. Many para-church organizations
were founded to enlist and mobilize
this newfound army of missionaries.
Europe: Birth of Modern Missions
Europe: The New Dark Continent
The advent of modern missions
began in the late 18th and early 19th
century. William Carey, known as the
“Father of Modern Missions,” founded the Baptist Missionary Society in
1792. In 1865, Hudson Taylor founded
the China Inland Mission and began
ground breaking (and at that time cutting-edge) missions to the Chinese
people. David Livingston first went
to Africa as a medical missionary
in 1840, was used by the Lord to
open up deepest Africa in order that
the Gospel may be proclaimed to all
peoples, tribes and nations. Count
Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf was
the founder of the Moravians which
sent 228 missionaries into 10 foreign
countries as early as 1732.
These four men are fine examples of
those who were called to missions during this period. They represent a large
number of European men and women
Throughout the years, the initial mission momentum from Europe waned
and petered out. As a result, many
missiologists now consider Europe to
be “The New Dark Continent,” and
claim that it is arguably more difficult to do missions and evangelism in
Europe than on any of the other continents. In her book Europe: Restoring
Hope, Deborah Meroff identifies four
population groups which are at the
centre of Europe’s heart trouble: marginalized people, Muslims, youth
and nominal and secular people.
(Note: Deborah was invited to speak
at this year’s Missionfest Manitoba
but declined stating that she is an
author and not a speaker. She highly recommended Jeff Fountain and
Stuart McAllister, both of whom will
be speaking on these issues.)

What About North America?
In the late 19th century, Canada and
United States followed Europe’s lead
in establishing mission initiatives.
Many Bible societies and para-church
organizations (e.g. The Christian
and Missionary Alliance founded
by A.B. Simpson) were established
and tremendous missionary initiatives ensued. Sadly, in recent years
Canada and United States have fol-
lowed Europe on the road to secularism. Canada is ahead of the United
States on this perilous journey.
Is There Hope?
Because of the grace of our Lord,
there is always hope! At this year’s
Missionfest Manitoba, we will begin in
Europe where modern missions began,
and then turn our thoughts to United
States and Canada. On Saturday morning, all of our keynote speakers will be
featured in a moderated forum where

the issues and challenges facing missions and evangelism in a predominantly secular world will be explored.
Bruce Clemenger concludes Missionfest
on Sunday afternoon by giving us our
report card. He will outline how well the
Canadian Church is doing in regards to
missions and evangelism.
“For the Christian, Missions is
NOT an Option”
This year Missionfest Manitoba focuses on Europe and the secular west. This
does not mean that we have forgotten
about the rest of the world, but that we
are concentrating specifically on these
areas. The Lord may call you to serve
at home, in Europe or anywhere else in
the world. Perhaps you will discover His
intention for you during our Missionfest
weekend. But regardless of where He
sends each of us, we cannot neglect
where He originally placed us. As we
continue to serve the Lord, we do well
to remember one of Dr. Oswald Smith’s
favourite missionary mottos, “The light
that shines farthest shines brightest
nearest home.”

KNOWING GOD AND MAKING HIM KNOWN
Zeal for Gospel message drives Stuart McAllister’s passion for ministry
By Pat Gerbrandt
S
tuart McAllister wanted to be taken seriously when he was young.
He was 20 when Christ changed his
life and now he is still serious about
the journey God has for him. That journey took him to prison in Yugoslavia,
for distributing Christian literature
with Operation Mobilization. Further
imprisonment followed as McAllister
continued to preach the Gospel in
communist countries.
He served with the European
Evangelical Alliance and was
involved with the European Lausanne
Committee. Several thousand team
members spread across Europe with
the message of the Gospel as part of
“Love Europe,” an evangelistic mobilization he spearheaded.
Today, McAllister serves as North
American Regional Director and
Vice-President of Training with Ravi
Zacharias International Ministries,
having joined the organization in
1998. His passion for preaching the
Gospel, unabated since his conversion, now takes McAllister all over
the world. RZIM has a strong evangelistic and apologetic foundation.
McAllister says the most exciting
part of his ministry is seeing the
Gospel held up in public settings.
People willing to witness need to be
aware that secularization and relativism are increasing, and that will likely
mean growing ridicule, either overt or
covert, for believers.
In this real world we need to be
“agents of hope,” he says. To that
end, McAllister wants to see “how a
vision of the cross inspires, grounds
and shapes a creative approach and
the use of imagination in mission.”
He is excited to dialogue with
people about the Gospel in public
forums, at universities, or professional gatherings and is committed to
being open, honest, clear and bibli-
cal. Young people want to be taken
seriously, McAllister says, and he
loves to gain insights from them. We
need to learn from others, whether at
conferences or through reading biographies, connecting “with those who
have walked faithfully and seriously
for many years.” Prayer is crucial, he
adds, “but the best preparation is
Scripture.”
Although McAllister has a full
speaking schedule, he takes time to
relax, often reading history, enjoying
conversation with friends, or observing God’s creation. He sees God at
work in diverse ways and finds that
enriching.
Whether contributing articles for
“A Slice of Infinity,” RZIM’s postings
on issues of apologetics and philosophy or books and magazines on
missions or interacting with people,
McAllister’s bottom line is clear. “I
have sought to follow Christ where He
leads. My desire is to know God better and to make Him known. I want to
follow faithfully and finish well.”

EUROPE: A VITAL MISSION FIELD
Possibilities abound in a continent rich with a history of Christian faith
By Renée Joette Friesen
J
eff Fountain’s passion for Europe is
rooted in both his love for his home
and the historical underpinnings of
his faith.
Fountain grew up in a Baptist home
in New Zealand, but went through a
major faith struggle during his years
at university. He describes it as an
“agnostic tunnel experience” before
he discovered a “fresh foundation
for his faith” which drove him deeper
into studying the Bible.
In 1974 he came to Toronto where
he managed a group of musicians
that performed concerts in cathedrals in North America and some
parts of Europe. A year and a half later he felt led to return to Europe and
to his former career in journalism.
“Soon after, I was invited to edit a
magazine by (Youth with a Mission)
YWAM,” Fountain says of the job that
would launch him into a decadeslong career with the Christian-based
organization.
Fountain settled in Holland where
he met his wife of more than 35 years,
and he was the national leader of
YWAM during the 1980s.
“It was a very exciting period in
Europe. With the (Berlin) Wall coming
down, there were all kinds of possiRED ROCK BIBLE CAMP
Red Rock Bible Camp’s theme for the
summer of 2013 is, “The Kingdom.”
Jesus said, “But seek first his kingdom
and his righteousness, and all these
things will be given to you as well”
(Matthew 6:33). We live in an age when
most people are seeking personal pleasure and are looking after their own
wants and selfish desires with little to
no interest in God’s Kingdom and His
plans for their lives. We are building a
team of summer staff who love God and
love kids, who will share the message
of God’s Kingdom through their words,
attitudes and actions, making and growing disciples of Christ through Christian

bilities in Eastern Europe.”
Two years ago, Fountain stepped
down after 20 years as European
director of YWAM, and assumed
his current role as director of The
Schuman Centre for European
Studies.
He says Christians sometimes have
a negative view of Europe but there
are many signs of hope in the region.
Part of The Schuman Centre’s mandate is “to recover biblical perspectives of the past in order to give hope
for the future,” Fountain says. “It is
about letting God’s will be done. He
has used faithful minorities throughout history to work out His plan.”
“A minority of believers can make
a difference,” he says, adding people
need to look at Europe with a lens
that asks “Where is God at work in
Europe, and why is Europe so significant?”
Fountain explains that Europe is
a training ground for many foreign
students, which makes its outreach
so important. “That’s why Europe is
such a vital mission field today.”
Since the 1990s, Fountain has
been involved in the Hope for Europe
movement. He chairs an annual Hope
for Europe Round Table which helps
build linkages for ministries across
Europe. “We have about 20 different
networks trying to link Christians,”
he says.
And in addition to writing a weekly
blog on the spectrum of European
happenings, Fountain is actively
involved in Hope Talks (Hopetalks.
eu) – a public speaking ministry, similar to TEDTalks, which offers inspiring talks on issues facing Europe.
He also helps coordinate Christianbased heritage tours for pastors and
others who want to explore Europe.
“We visit 40 places in two weeks
to encounter those movements
that have shaped Christian faith in
Europe. We realize the relevance of
history and we go into cities looking
beneath the surface.”

LIVING RADICAL
Vince Antonucci tells his story of following God’s call to Las Vegas
By Renee Joette Friesen
I
t took some time for Vince Antonucci
to obey God’s call to plant a church
in Las Vegas. He had started a church
in Virginia Beach, Virginia in 1998,
and he had no intention of ever leaving.
“I planned on staying there forever.
But one day I decided to take our new
puppy for a walk. We’re going though
my neighbourhood when all of a sudden I was overwhelmed with this
thought, like I heard a voice inside
of me, that said, ‘You need to start a
church in Las Vegas’,” he says.
Antonucci knew he was capable
of doing it, but the fact that he had
started a church before was also
“why I knew I’d never do it again,”
he says.
“It was hard enough the first time,
so I decided to ignore the voice. The
only problem was that I knew the
voice was from God.”
He continued to struggle with it,
and even though his wife, Jen, got the
same message, Antonucci ignored
the call, insisting that God would
need to tell him in several ways.
“Every day I would mention it to
my wife. ‘Why do you think God said
that to me?” he says, adding he wondered if he was being called because
his father had ruined his life and marriage as a professional poker player
in Las Vegas.
“I kept mentioning it to my wife
and every time I did, she would roll
her eyes and say, ‘Whatever.’ But
one day I said something about it
again and she burst into tears, ran
upstairs, and hid underneath the
blankets of our bed. So I ran upstairs
and said, ‘Why are you crying?!’ Jen
sobbed, ‘Because we’re moving to
Las Vegas!’”
Antonucci still disagreed, but two
months later, during a trip to Israel, a
fellow pastor told him that someone
was looking for a church planter in
Las Vegas and that he would be perfect for the job.
“I soon had other strangers telling
me the same thing, and finally God
broke through my stubborn refusal
to listen to Him, and He convinced us
that He really was calling us to start
a church in Las Vegas,” he explains.
Antonucci hasn’t looked back
since.
He recently started Verve, an

unconventional church, near the Las
Vegas Strip, that targets “people who
don’t like church.”
“The two churches I’ve started are
focused on reaching people who are
the furthest from God and who other
churches can’t or won’t reach” he
explains. “We have reached pimps,
strippers, atheists, Wiccan witches, addicts, prostitutes, Mormons,
Buddhists, lesbians, and more.”
During college, Antonucci was himself an atheist whose search for evidence to prove the Bible wasn’t true
ultimately led him to Christ.
He now dedicates his life “to speaking to the saved on behalf of the lost,
and speaking to the lost that they
might be saved.”
He uses creativity and humour,
including stand-up comedy, in
his ministry and speaking. He has

Loving kids in every stage of life!
Life’s Vision has been providing educational resources on pro-life issues for
the past 38 years. Our mission is to contribute to the protection of life from the
moment of conception to natural death.
The Universal Declaration of Human
Rights states that “all human beings
are born free and equal in dignity and
rights” but in our society today we ask
questions about when human life begins,
when a human being becomes a person
and can I have someone end my life. Join
us as we speak up for the defenseless!
Rescue those who are unjustly sentenced

FAITH AND PUBLIC LIFE GO HAND IN HAND
Evangelical Fellowship of Canada president addresses tough topics
By Karen Stiller

faith trends. Religious freedom.
Beginning–and end-of–life debates.
Faith and public life.
These are but a few of the issues
on the radar of the Evangelical
Fellowship of Canada (EFC) and its
president, Bruce J. Clemenger.
The EFC is Canada’s largest association of evangelical Christians, and
offers a plethora of resources for
churches and Christian organizations
across the country. Clemenger established the EFC’s Centre for Faith and
Public Life in Ottawa in 1996, reflecting his personal passion and the
EFC’s ongoing and expanding role
to promote an evangelical Christian
understanding on the invaluable role
of the Christian faith in Canadian
society.
Since its inception, the Centre for
Faith and Public Life has intervened
before government and the courts
on issues important to evangelical
Christian faith: seeking to uphold care
for the vulnerable, religious freedom,
sanctity of human life, marriage and
family, and freedom of conscience.
WALLS OF FREEDOM
Walls of Freedom Outreach Centre
is a church where you can participate with God to remake, refill,
remold and replenish the lives of
broken people. 1 Samuel 2:8 speaks
about the Lord raising the poor out
of the dust and the beggar from
the dunghill to make them inherit
the throne of glory. This ministry
is a platform of gospel principles
that reach out to restore the lives
of abused families, at-risk youth,
and discouraged fathers. We are a
church where a healthy person of
God who would like to share and is
willing to be trained can play a part
in restoring life in Winnipeg’s Inner
City.

“The EFC develops guiding principles for response to these issues in a
manner that reflects a reasoned and
credible Christian witness and models healthy citizenship in Canada,”
says Clemenger. “It is about being a
public witness to the Gospel, in ways
that impact Canadian culture for the
public good. And we have to do that
well, each and every time.”
Clemenger and his team interact with some of the most pressing issues facing Canada today—and
interface with what is an extremely
diverse evangelical Canadian community from coast to coast.
Clemenger speaks and writes widely on religion, culture, ethics and
politics—often in the pages of Faith
Today, the EFC’s award-winning magazine—and is often interviewed by
secular and religious media as they
attempt to portray an evangelical
viewpoint on social and moral issues.
“The Canadian context within
which we live out of calling as disciples of Jesus Christ has significantly
changed in the past 50 years,” says
Clemenger. “We live in an increasingly secularized culture. The societal norms that once undergirded our
public life together are being refashioned. So, what does effective public witness look like in this context?
What can the evangelical community
bring to the discussion? Those are a
few of the questions that really interest me and help inform the EFC’s
work.”
Clemenger is at work on a PhD in
political theory that examines the
accommodation of religious, cultural and institutional pluralism within the context of political liberalism

THE GREAT
KIDMISSION
W
hat if changing the world was
so simple that any kid could
do it? It’s probably not a surprise to
anyone...changing the world really IS
that simple!
This year Mini-Missionfest will be
presenting The Great KidMission. The
Great KidMission is an opportunity
for children here in Canada to take
on a kid-size mission project with a
super-size impact.
An initiative of Children’s Camps
International, The Great KidMission
encourages kids to find ways to
support mission endeavours. Little
things are big things! Consider putting up a lemonade stand to raise
money to send kids to camp in India,
or selling unwanted toys and books
to raise money to buy Bible materials
for kids’ programs in other countries.
There are many ideas.
Who says that you have to be big
to be super? The goal is that kids find
ways to give of themselves. Changing
the world is not just up to moms and

dads—kids can do it, too! It is important that we get our children involved
in missional thinking, praying, and
giving at an early age. If we train up
our children in the way they should
go, even when they are old they will
not depart from it.
A child here in Canada can earn
and give a gift as small as $5 and
this can change the life of a child in
India for eternity, by allowing them
to attend a week of Bible camp and
a full year of weekly follow-up programming.
To this end, we will be accepting
donations at registration for MiniMissionfest this year. However, this
money should NOT be from Mom and
Dad, it should be the child’s own
money, given sacrificially, so that it
may be credited to their account.

BETHANY COLLEGE
At Bethany College, our emphasis is on
active, informed discipleship. Our mission is to “nurture disciples, and train
leaders to serve.” We work hard to integrate in-depth learning and active service. In dorm life and classrooms, sports
and artistic endeavours, student leadership and service-learning trips, this discipleship is central to all we do and happens best in community. The Bethany
community goes beyond lifelong friendships that grow here: it includes focused
mentoring and personal discernment.
God uses these to bring about amazing
transformation in the lives of our students. Visit: www.bethany.sk.ca to find

CANADIAN MENNONITE UNIVERSITY
Put your faith into action at CMU!
Education is more than what happens in
the classroom—it’s about finding practical ways to serve others. At Canadian
Mennonite University, we believe that
education and service go hand-in-hand.
That’s why all students must do a practicum assignment to graduate. Through
practica, you can provide needed services
in Canada and around the world, and
gain valuable experience. At the same
time, you can earn a recognized university degree to find a career or go on to further study. Through CMU’s Outtatown
adventure and discipleship program,
you can travel, learn about the world’s
needs and serve others in Canada, South
Africa, Guatemala or French Africa.

MISSIONFEST MANITOBA WORKSHOPS 2013
This year at Missionfest Manitoba, we
are excited about the quality of the
workshops that have been carefully
selected to reflect topics and issues
that are closely tied to our central
theme “Hope for Europe: Missions
in a Secular World.” The workshops
will be presented by our keynote
speakers and carefully selected special guests. Even though there is
increased seating, please arrive early to avoid disappointment. We will
have three Saturday workshop sessions at 11:45 a.m., 1:30 p.m. and
4:30 p.m.
SATURDAY, FEBRUARY 2, 2013
MASTER WORKSHOP
SESSION ONE – 11:45 A.M.
Room 1 – Beyond Secularism:
Unmasking the Myth
Jeff Fountain – Schuman Centre for
European Studies
Europe, the birthplace of the modern mission movement, the reformation, and the translation of the Bible
into the vernacular, has now become
a world leader toward secularism.
This philosophy has become deeply
embedded in parts of European society. But is it permanent? Is it sustainACCELERATED CHRISTIAN EDUCATION
Accelerated Christian Education (A.C.E.)
has been providing high quality, high
standard, and high result education for
the past 35 years, with over 170 schools
in Canada.
It is a trendsetter in education: The
A.C.E. educational process proceeds at
the exact level determined by the child’s
ability. Individualization produces academic excellence. A.C.E. students continue to demonstrate above-average
achievement. Godly character training
received as part of this learning experience prepares students for challenges
and future opportunities. Biblical values
and concepts considered foundational
to meaningful interpersonal relationships and productive living are conveyed
throughout the curriculum in such a way
as to become life-shaping influences.

with the “soft powers” of Christianity
a.k.a. truth and love?
This workshop is presented by Jeff
Fountain of the Schuman Centre for
European Studies. Please see his bio
on page 8.
Room 2 – Renegade: Your Faith Isn’t
Meant to Be Safe
Vince Antonucci – Pastor of Verve
and noted author
Through an insightful and penetrating look at scriptural examples, Vince
Antonucci will challenge us to live
radical lives for God in a culture diametrically opposed to Him. Vince will
encourage us to reconsider what it
means to live for God, and how to
cultivate a real relationship with Him,
and then equip us to discover our
unique calling. He will encourage and
inspire us to live out a risky, renegade faith.
Vince Antonucci, founder and lead
pastor of Verve, will present this workshop. Please see his bio on page 9.
Room 3 – Multiplying disciples and
churches in Europe’s Cities: Bringing
hope to the multi-cultural urban
centres of Europe
Howard Moore – Greater Europe
Mission
In the past, the cities of Europe
were bastions of Christendom. Now
they are teeming with people from
many different cultures, ethnic backgrounds and faith groups, of which
secular humanism remains prevalent. In the midst of this situation,
God continues His mission of build-
ing His church. He is calling out His
people from within Europe and from
around the world, to fulfill the commission of making disciples of these
nations.
This seminar will explore the needs
and opportunities of ministry in the
cities of Europe. You will hear stories of ways in which God is working,
through individuals and groups, to
bring transformation to these urban
communities.
Howard Moore, leader Greater
Europe Mission in Canada, was a
missionary in evangelism and
church planting in France for 18
years. In 2004, Howard and his wife,
with their three children, returned
to Canada. In addition to his leadership role within GEM, Howard travels
to Europe each year to lead shortterm ministry teams.

MASTER WORKSHOP
SESSION TWO – 1:30 P.M.
Room 1 – Whose truth, which vision:
How the modern world rejects religious views
Stuart McAllister – Ravi Zacharias
International Ministries
Not too long ago, relativism ruled.
It didn’t matter what you believed—
you were entitled to your view. Today,
secularism seems to be increasing,
replacing relativism. Now it doesn’t
matter what you believe, because
all religions are wrong. Has the
secular world begun to idolize reason itself? Stuart McAllister will not

only outline current trends, but also
how we, as Christians, can engage
the growing numbers who reject
Christianity (along with all other
religious views).
Stuart McAllister, North American
Regional Director and Vice-President
of Training with Ravi Zacharias
International Ministries will present
this workshop. Please see his bio on
page 7.
Room 2 – O Canada, how often
would I have gathered your children
together as a hen gathers her brood
under her wings, and you would not!
Bruce Clemenger – Evangelical
Fellowship of Canada
Are we winning or losing? What are
the pressing issues concerning the
Canadian Church and its approach
to missions and evangelism. Why
are so many young people leaving
the church? How does the Church
have to change in order to remain
relevant in a skeptical culture? In
this workshop, Bruce Clemenger
will take an objective look at the
serious issues that face the 21st
century church trying to survive in a
secular world.
This workshop is being presented by
Bruce Clemenger, President of the
Evangelical Fellowship of Canada.
Please see his bio on page 10.
Room 3 – Europe, the real dark continent
Christoph Koebel - Operation
Mobilization
Europe today is the greatest exporter
of secularism, atheism and ideologies hostile to Christianity and the
Church. Europe is the least reached
continent. We will take a look at five
types of Europeans: post-Christian,
post-Communist, post-modern, postmigrant, and post-secular. We will
look at a variety of ministries reaching Europeans in the 21st century.
Christoph Koebel grew up in
Switzerland and graduated from a
Bible College in Germany. He served
for 10 years as church planter in
Austria and is currently a mission
mobilizer for Operation Mobilization.
EVANGELICAL MENNONITE CONFERENCE (EMC) BOARD OF MISSIONS

CHRISTIAN SERVICE BRIGADE
Christian Service Brigade exists to building godly men of today and tomorrow.
Because men have the sacred responsibility to challenge and equip boys and young
men, it is imperative to do so in a setting
where they will thrive and learn effectively. Boys think differently than girls, learn
differently, mature differently and play
differently. While co-ed ministry serves
an important role in a boy’s life, Christian
Service Brigade strongly believes in partnering with local churches to equip and
empower Christian men to serve as mentors and role models to boys of all ages in
what it means to be a godly man. CSB creates mentoring opportunities through relevant activities, Bible-based teaching and
hands-on learning.
CSB can help you provide and opportunity
for boys and young men to discover God
in a non-threatening, action-packed atmosphere where guys can be guys, and boys
and leaders are together becoming godly
men. Contact us today about making your
church a place where it’s a good time to
be a boy.

MASTER WORKSHOP
SESSION THREE – 4:30 P.M.
Room 1 – My Hope for Canada and
Relational Evangelism
Mesh Hit – Billy Graham Evangelistic
Association
My Hope with Billy Graham is a massive
effort to reach people across the United
States and Canada with the Gospel of
Jesus Christ. Following a simple bib-
lical model, My Hope with Billy Graham
combines the reach and excitement
of a nationwide media event with the
power of personal relationships.
Mesh Hit is a ministry manager at
Billy Graham Evangelistic Association
in Calgary. He has served as a pastor in the local church, and in other
ministries over the last 14 years. His
heart and passion is to connect with
those who don’t know Christ and to
share the Gospel with those whom
God puts in his path.

Room 2 – Muslim responses to
secularism in Europe
Alan Guenther – Briercrest College
and Seminary
Immigrant Muslims, as well as new
generations of Muslims in Europe,
are responding to secularism in
new ways. Innovative proposals
by Muslim thinkers, such as Tariq
Ramadan, are critiquing the French
model of secularism, while at the
same time attempting to help Muslim
communities create a uniquely “Western” Islam. In some ways,
Muslims in Europe face similar struggles as Christians, in seeking not
only to survive, but also to thrive in a
secular culture. The changes happening in Muslim communities offer new
opportunities for Christians to be witnesses of Jesus Christ, in Europe as
well as North America.
Alan Guenther’s interest in the history
of Islam is based in large measure on
the four years he lived in Pakistan, from
1988 to 1992, while serving as a missionary with The Evangelical Alliance
Mission (TEAM). Upon returning from
Pakistan, he pursued studies at the
Institute of Islamic Studies at McGill
University in Montreal, completing his
graduate degrees.

Wilfried Schulte, New Life
Evangelistic Association
Being deeply saturated and influenced by secular values, the spiritual
thirst of German speaking people in
Europe is greater than ever before.
The challenge of the church remains
to lead people to the only one who
can quench this thirst—Jesus.
In this workshop, Wilfried Schulte will
give insights into the spiritual situation in German-speaking Europe, and
share how Christians in Germany face
up to the challenge of presenting the
gospel in a changing social and cultural environment.
Wilfried Schulte, son of evangelist
Anton Schulte, is the director of the

SPEAK UP FOR THOSE WITH NO VOICE
By Gord Gilbey
A
t Missionfest Manitoba 2014, we
will be looking at the issue of
human trafficking at home and around
the world. Current estimates declare
that 600,000 to 800,000 people are
trafficked across transnational borders
each year. When trafficking intra-country (within a country) estimates are
included the number reaches into the
millions. These numbers were stated
in a report prepared for the government of Canada in 2006. If millions are
trafficked against their will each year,
millions upon millions are trapped in
situations against their will. A significant number of these individuals are in
their teen years or younger.
If millions are trafficked
against their will each
year, millions upon millions are trapped in situations against their will.
Proverbs 31: 8 and 9 strongly suggests that those who believe in the
Bible must speak out for those who
cannot speak for themselves. Further,
Micah 6:8 clearly states that the Lord
requires His people to “do justice, and
to love kindness, and to walk humbly
with your God.”
World-wide human trafficking is now
epidemic and the problem seems to be
insurmountable. In 2011, I met a group
of girls who were recently rescued and
hidden in Cambodia. These children
were so damaged by their experience
that they would not look me in the eye,
and all of them promptly disappeared
when I entered the compound. After
a few days, I was able to build trust
with these innocent girls and was even
allowed to take a rare picture.
How can an individual Christian
make a difference? I think that the
answer lies in the two Bible verses mentioned above. Perhaps at
Missionfest Manitoba 2014, the Lord
will demonstrate how even you and I
can make a small difference in this very
large problem.
“These girls were recently rescued from horrific circumstances, and are being given a
chance to start again. Their stories provides hope to the millions that are still enslaved.”

the tools to reach their full potential by providing a drop-in centre, a wilderness camp to
have an one-of-a-kind experience, a motorsport club to gain auto-repair skills, and home
renovation program to learn building skills for future employment. Operating out of a
20,000 square foot facility on Aberdeen Avenue, ICYA has enhanced the lives of thousands of kids over the past 26 years. Join our mission by supporting our programs financially or by volunteering today.

he smooth running of any
major festival is dependent
on the number of dedicated volunteers it has following Christ’s
example of selflessly serving others. Missionfest Manitoba is fortunate enough to have both many
volunteers that return from year-toyear plus new people who also recognize the value of the conference.
We would like to express our heartfelt thanks to all of our volunteers,
and we pray that God will bless
them for their dedicated service.
If you are reading this magazine prior to the conference…you
can probably still volunteer! Each
of our tasks is divided in such a
way so that each volunteer will
enjoy performing a worthwhile task
over a defined period of time. This
will ensure that each person can
choose how much time they wish
to commit and still be able to enjoy
participating in the various activities of the conference.
The areas where we need the
most volunteers are: Greeter/
Host, Workshop Host and Ushers
However there are also many other
needs that are required to be met
both prior to and throughout the
weekend. Please refer to the “How
to Get Involved” page located at

to make an impact in their world, both locally and
globally.
HCS offers two approaches for specific missions training. Our four-year B.A. degree program has four majors
including Global Ministries. This is the preferred program if you intend to “do missions” over the long term.
If you are looking for a short-term experience before
embarking on another life pursuit, our one-year Global
Missions Force program combines Bible College courses
with discipleship classes in preparation for a 3-month
foreign Christian service experience. Check us out at

LIVING WATERS
CANADA – CENTRAL
Living Waters is a non-profit, interdenominational, international Christian
ministry, active in more than 20 countries.
Living Waters is a ministry that works as
an extension of the local church, providing
a safe and honest place for those who
struggle with a variety of relational and
sexual issues.
Our ministry serves people in the
following ways: individual counselling,
support groups, discipleship programs,
national training conferences, weekend
seminars, resources for HIV/AIDS. We
offer support and seminars for family
and friends touched by gender issues and
run discipleship programs focusing on all
aspects of sexual and relational wholeness.
We focus on God’s original intent for our
sexuality, and how to respond to homosexuality and all other areas of brokenness in
a Christ-like manner.
