CEO’s M ESSAGE
Describing 40 years of providing healthcare to our community,
La Familia Medical Center is characterized as “one of the most
well-loved institutions in the city” [The Santa Fe New Mexican,
July 29, 2012].
At the kick-off to celebrations of this anniversary year, the LFMC
Board awarded special recognition for their longtime service to
past and present staff members.
In their own words -- A patient’s story
My name is Israel Hall.
Four years ago I was homeless, angry, depressed, full of fear and an alcoholic. I was tired of
living. My life was a living hell but I didn’t know how to get out. I was given a place to stay at St.
Elizabeth’s shelter and told about the clinic that was around the corner.
It was fitting that the event seemed like a family reunion, with
a bunch of the honorees’ relatives and friends gathered at the
tables. Afterall, family medicine is the distinctive practice of Santa Fe’s only community
health center.
When I found La Familia’s Health Care for the Homeless (HCH) my life began to turn around. I
first met Ron Schwartz, an HCH case manager, who told me I should go for treatment at the Santa
Fe Recovery Center. I said I would try it but inside I didn’t have any hope. I was always running
away, mostly from myself. Dr. Lutz gave me the referral and Ron drove me to the Recovery Center. I stayed for 30 days,
graduating right after Thanksgiving.
Sustaining our nonprofit family medicine practice, expanding comprehensive services and
moving the business forward in current time takes place at the strategic planning tables:
The support I received at La Familia, St E’s and the Recovery Center changed my life forever. I have discovered many
painful things about my past and why I was so angry, hopeless and frightened.
• Securing facility improvement funds and managing a restricted budget has afforded
relocation and expansion of dental services. Meanwhile, at the drafting table, plans
were drawn to convert dental operatories to medical exam rooms. Today, there are six
additional exam rooms at the Alto Street site and four more at the Southside Clinic.
Because of the people who believed in me like Dr. Lutz, Maria McMahon, Liz Reynolds, Ron Schwartz, Melba Martinez, Patty
Romero, Aaron Perez, Lorie Martinez, Larry Garcia and Anna Rayne-Levi, (Shane Lampman & Ms. Maria at. Elizabeth’s) I
am a changed man.
• Refined and new systems have been implemented to improve both patient access and
provider appointment schedules. The patient appointment system can accommodate
same-day visits and time slots for individual provider’s patient needs.
• With 50% of the revenue supporting La Familia operations tied to payments for patient
services, an improved billing system is now in place. Even minor refinements to our
check-in and check-out protocol reinforce Patient Service Representatives for their
advocacy role with respect to patient access to financial resources for health care services.
I will always be grateful for the support, the love and caring these people gave me during a very dark time in my life. I was
allowed to tell my story, cry and release the anger I held inside. I finally stopped running away and faced myself.
“Class of 2012 – 2014”
• The major forward motion is a shift to electronic medical records. With financial
support from Medicaid incentives and a training timetable geared for smooth transition,
La Familia Medical Center has Gone Live with a state-of-the-art-system.
Since private for-profit practices are closing their doors to Medicare patients, local New
Mexicans are looking for primary care physicians who accept their insurance. Ensuring
continuity of care is a practice priority at our non-profit. The booming population of
Medicare-age patients has become the new underserved population. La Familia Medical
Center welcomes Medicare-age patients, no matter their insurance.
Table talk about healthcare reform is now a nationwide reality. As Santa Fe’s only federally
qualified community health center long dedicated to providing excellent and affordable
care, La Familia Medical Center is ready to take its place at the head of that table.

La Familia Welcomes New Medical Director
La Familia is delighted to announce the arrival of Wendy Johnson, MD, MPH. Dr. Johnson
assumed the position of Medical Director on September 4th.
La Familia is delighted to announce the arrival of Wendy Johnson, MD, MPH. Dr. Johnson
assumed the position of Medical Director on September 4th.
Dr. Johnson has over 15 years of experience in primary care, public health and global health
as a clinician, teacher, policy-maker, technical advisor and manager. Her first experiences
in how to deliver high quality comprehensive family health care were gained through the
excellent mentorship and education she received as a resident at La Famila in the late 1990s.
Since then, she has provided health care services to diverse populations from all over
the world in Cleveland, Ohio; Chiapas, Mexico; and Seattle, Washington. Most recently
she was a Clinical Assistant Professor of Global Health at the University of Washington.
Previously, she directed a program to scale-up HIV prevention and treatment within two
large provinces in the Mozambique.

Matt Schmidt, MD joined LFMC on August 15, 2012 . He comes to us directly from the
Pacific Northwest where he completed his residency at Southwest Washington Medical
Center in Vancouver, Washington.

Matt is from Walton, KS, attended Bethel College in Newton, KS and received his medical
degree at Kansas University in Lawrence. He is excited to begin his practice in Family
Medicine because he “looks forward to developing relationships with patients, caring for
whole families, and hearing the stories of my patients.” He adds, “ I have special interest
in working with pregnant patients, children and sports medicine.” Matt is married to Joanna Toews. In their free time, they enjoy hiking and cooking together.
She is less enthusiastic about Matt’s interest in motorcycles.

WAL-MART , Blue Cross & Blue Shield of New Mexico and the The Frost Foundation have all made grants to LFMC
to support a pilot program designed to address the issue of obesity in our patient population.

Staffed by a Community Health Educator and a Registered Dietitian, the program takes a personalized approach
to this critical health issue by working with individual families to analyze both their dietary and exercise habits.
Almost everyone can relate to the difficulty involved in making lifestyle changes and each family’s circumstances
is different. Many working parents, for example, struggle to find time to meal plan and shop for the kinds of foods
that can be filling but still not too high in fat and carbohydrates.
Staffed by a Community Health Educator and a Registered Dietitian, the program takes a personalized approach
to this critical health issue by working with individual families to analyze both their dietary and exercise habits.
Almost everyone can relate to the difficulty involved in making lifestyle changes and each family’s circumstances
