VITAL
a: Existing as a manifestation of life.
b. Concerned with or necessary to the maintenance of life
Full of life and vigor
Center for Economic Growth (CEG)
The Center for Economic Growth, celebrating its 21st year in 2008, is vital to Tech Valley. A vigorous, visionary economic development partnership spanning an 11-county
region, CEG is a private, not-for-profit, membership-based business development organization. It focuses the energies, resources and hopes of its members and businesses
as well as the municipalities and organizations that support them.
PRESIDENT’S LETTER
Over the past
year, the Center
F. Michael Tucker
for Economic
President, CEO
Growth (CEG)
has advanced and implemented
many exciting initiatives in furtherance of our Grow, Attract, Prepare
agenda.
AMD’s commitment to build a
chipfab plant on the Luther Technology Campus in Saratoga County is
an excellent illustration of the power
of regional cooperation and CEG’s
commitment to partnering with the
business, government, and education
sectors to benefit the entire region.
The commitments by General
Electric, IBM, Momentive, and so
many other exciting announcements
during the past year clearly demonstrate that success creates
momentum, and each new project
or incremental expansion accelerates
the Capital Region’s and Tech Valley’s
identity as a global technology
powerhouse.
Our dedicated and active Board of
Directors, staff, and members, along
with our many partners, contribute
to energizing the region. As broad
economic indicators falter, our mission to grow regional companies,
attract outside investment, and
prepare communities for sustainable
growth is more relevant than ever.
CEG has proven vital in stimulating growth and in ensuring that the
region’s economic vitality and
quality of life are enhanced. As CEG
celebrates its success, we renew our
commitment to work together to
further advance transformational
growth.
CHAIRMAN’S LETTER
As president
of The College
R. Mark Sullivan, Ed.D.
of St. Rose, the
President,
collaborative
The College of St. Rose
and synergistic
work of the Center for Economic
Growth makes eminent sense to me.
Like any learning community,
CEG is a mechanism for the sharing –
of energies, leadership and resources.
It is a model for engaging fully the
businesses, agencies and institutions
that comprise, direct and empower it.
From the first, CEG has recognized
the importance of higher education
throughout Tech Valley. Our many
excellent colleges and universities
focus and develop the brainpower
that enables entrepreneurs to turn
their ideas into businesses and other
graduates to grow into leadership
positions in established companies.
Clearly, they serve as vital
economic engines in their own right.
This important role is partly traditional and partly innovative. It is
traditional in providing employment
to faculty and staff and interacting as
customers with the businesses that
surround our campuses. And it is
innovative – within the collaborative
CEG model – in partnering with
businesses, cultural, civic and professional organizations in ways that our
founders never dreamed would be
happening today on our campuses.
Consider our own Massry Center,
EMPAC at Rensselaer Polytechnic
Institute and the College of Nanoscale
Science and Engineering of the
University at Albany. And look to the
future, where new ideas developed on
campus will continue to leap off
campus into new and exciting
synergies to come – and support the
economic development of the region.

GROW
To increase in size by a natural process.
a. To expand, gain
b. To increase in amount or degree, intensify.
CEG’s work to increase the vitality of Tech Valley by expanding
regional business growth through its Technical Services
Group, Watervliet Innovation Center, Venture Programs, CEN,
Tech Connex, Bioconnex and other initiatives.
Technical Services Group continued to help regional technology and manufacturing companies during 2008 to
create and retain jobs, increase sales and expand capital investment. Eureka!, Sandler, Lean, ISO, and Training
Within Industry (TWI) are among the offerings available to companies in the region.
Sponsored Eureka! Winning Ways
Beginning in October 2007 CEG brought this pioneering leadership development program – once offered only to such giants as Nike, American Express, Schlumberger, Procter & Gamble and Ford – to small
manufacturers in the region. Its impact has been staggering: Since January 2008, CEG has delivered Eureka! Winning Ways growth services to
10 Capital Region manufacturers and is a leading MEP Center among
its peers nationwide in adopting and ramping up this program.
Watervliet Innovation Center
fostered regional vitality. CEG
matched the resources of regional
companies with national security
needs, creating synergies with national academic, industry and
government stakeholders.
• Provided vital market visibility
and integration. CEG submitted a significant proposal to the New
York State Energy Research and Development Authority (NYSERDA)

opportunities for technology
business support services.
