OUTREACH
GREETINGS ALL…
THE IN-HOUSE BACK YARD MISSION TRIP - CLEANING, WEEDING, AND TRIMMING
AROUND THE CHURCH - WAS A SUCCESS. WE HAD 16 VOLUNTEERS! OUR NEXT
PROJECT WILL BE WORKING UPSTAIRS ABOVE THE YELLOW MEETING ROOM. THIS
WILL BE A GENERAL CLEANUP AND A FEW PROJECTS. MORE TO COME ON THIS.
ALSO, WE WILL BE LOOKING AT CLEANING WINDOWS - NOT THE STAINED GLASS
ONES! THIS WILL AFFORD A REAL OPPORTUNITY TO CONNECT WITH OUR CHURCH
AND EXPEND A LITTLE SWEAT EQUITY.
FOOD AND CLOTHING IS ALSO NEEDED FOR THE VARIOUS CHARITIES WE WORK
WITH. BULK FOODS ARE REALLY APPRECIATED - CEREAL, RICE, BOXES OF POTATOES PEANUT BUTTER IS ALSO A VERY GOOD SOURCE OF PROTEIN. MEN'S CLOTHING AND
SHOES ARE IN GREAT DEMAND. THEY CAN GO IN THE ROUND CHOPIN HALL
CONTAINER LOCATED BY THE WEST ENTRY DOOR.
AS ALWAYS, THANK YOU FOR YOUR GENEROSITY.
NANCY AND PAUL O'SULLIVAN, OUTREACH CHAIRS.
You never know when you might meet…
Along with the entire parish, CSG welcomes Fr. John and Annie. To help them (2 of
them, lots of us...) nametags were updated and are being worn. Thanks to the Vestry
and parish cooks, all enjoyed a delicious carry-in brunch on their first Sunday at
Trinity.
Birthday and anniversary cards continue to be sent to parish members. A thank you
to Gloria Wolph who has been sending these during the past year. Other CSG
members are now continuing this so...If your "important day" is not on record with
the parish office, please let Deborah know!
Planning for fall CSG activities will begin in August. Grab a cup of coffee (and a
friend) and join us after the 9:30 service on Sunday, August 14. As I have often said
in this column, given the mission of CSG (to welcome visitors and newcomers while
sustaining current parishioners), 'twould not be amiss to have everyone be a
member of this committee.
Ginny Lee Pilstl, CSG Chair
…Christ in a stranger’s guise.
Concert
Plan ahead…The Full Sound Chamber Group returns to Trinity on Sunday, September
11th at 4:00 p.m. for a concert in the nave. The concert is free and open to the public. A
free will offering will be taken.
THE RECTOR WRITES…
3
When I was in seminary there was a particularly “advanced”
(i.e., Anglo-Catholic) parish on the Upper East Side whose rector would occasionally call on me to assist in various
special liturgies, knowing that I had experience serving at Solemn Mass and that I knew my way around the
Tridentine Missale Romanum. Yes, an Episcopal Church doing the Latin Mass! I had thought that was one of the
reasons we'd had a Reformation to begin with, but I was still a callow youth eager to help out where I could. I never
had any formal connection to the parish - never wanted to be their seminarian-in-residence. For one thing, there
seemed to me a disconnect between a church insisting on such an arcane liturgy while having to reach out to only
tangentially involved community members to pull it off. Everything about the place was a little too precious. Plus,
while the churchmanship was advanced, other elements of the parish's culture were not. One friend of mine described
the parish perfectly, I thought, when he said it was a lot like the Frick Collection - it's a great place to visit, with its
own peculiar charm and beauty, but you wouldn't want to live there.
There was a service for which I was called in to serve as Subdeacon, though, that had at least one element I
thought was particularly successful and from which I've taken a lesson. It was May, traditionally celebrated as the
month of Mary, and devotions associated with the “May Crowning” took place just after the Eucharist on the Feast of
the Visitation, May 31st. After receiving Communion we all lined up behind a statue of the Blessed Virgin held high
upon a litter and crowned with blossoms. In the stately procession around the block we were followed by a brass
band that led us in singing all thirty-eight verses of the “Walsingham Pilgrim's Hymn,” the song traditionally sung
between the Roman Catholic Slipper Chapel (in which, as you might imagine, one takes off one's shoes) and the
Anglican Shrine of Our Lady in the little Norfolk village that has been a place of pilgrimage since the reign of
Edward the Confessor. So there we were, not in rural England but in mostly-secular Manhattan, in this strange
parade.
Imagine coming upon such a display, rushing to a dinner engagement or the theater or home from work. You
might have wondered who those crazy people were. You might feel awkward while walking quickly by, avoiding eye
contact, going the opposite direction or crossing the street to avoid the procession. On the other hand, you might just
feel intrigued enough to try to learn more about what was going on. Maybe you'd go home and “Google” what church
was on that block. Maybe you'd stick around and ask somebody after the procession if it were a special holiday.
Perhaps you wouldn't pay it too much mind, but at least your spirits would be lifted by seeing some people
worshiping God in their own curious way. Or maybe you'd just feel uncomfortable by such an outward, “showy”
display of religiosity. One thing you wouldn't be able to do, though, is totally ignore the scene.
What I believe worked about this was that it was a group of people unembarrassed enough about their faith and its
tradition to express it openly, not because they were primarily concerned with getting people in the pews or checks in
the offering plate, but because...well, why not!? There was nothing gimmicky about the procession; it wasn't
dumbed-down to make it more “accessible” or to telegraph exactly what was happening and why to all who might
glance in our direction. The message was, nonetheless, clear enough: We've been doing this for hundreds of years.
We're not ashamed of it. Come sometime and learn more if we've piqued your interest. If not, that's fine, go with God.
I don't know if this particular exercise had the added benefit of more people in the pews or not, but I do believe
that healthy, sustainable church growth does depend on a congregation knowing and expressing who they are and
where they've come from. I also believe that the worship of Almighty God is not primarily about how it makes us
feel or how it appears to others; it's primarily about the worship of Almighty God. The former, I think, naturally
follows when we are concerned about and committed to the latter.
I'm not suggesting we hold a May Crowning, though I'm always up for a good outdoor liturgical procession! Nor
do I believe that good liturgy is necessarily recherché. What I am saying is that we have a deep well from which to
draw in terms of our common life in all its aspects, not least of which is our tradition of common prayer and worship.
I intend to do a fair amount of education about this in the coming months. For now, I encourage you to consider how
you interact with God when you are most sincere in your commitment to upholding that relationship and what that
would look like were you to practice that openly and unabashedly. I believe that this is the first step (when
undertaken both individually and corporately) to living in such a way as to make the hope that is in us in Christ Jesus
most clear and most compelling to all those we meet along the pilgrim way.
Yours in service to the Gospel,
John

A PRAYER FOR SUMMER
Loving God, Creator of all times and
places, we thank you for the gift of
summertime, the days of light, warmth
and leisure. Thank you for the beauty
that surrounds us every place we look:
the multi-colored flowers, the deep blue
of the sky, the tranquil surface of lakes,
the laughter of children at play, people
strolling in park, families gathered
around picnic tables and the increased
time to spend with family and friends.
As we open our eyes and ears to the
landscape of nature and people, open
our hearts to receive all as gift. Give us
that insight to see you as the Divine
Artist. Help us to realize and appreciate
that you are laboring to keep all in
existence. And warm our souls with the
awareness of your presence. Let all the
gifts we enjoy this summer deepen our
awareness of your love so that we may
share this with others and enjoy a
summertime of re-creation. Amen.
