Chairperson’s Message
It is with great pleasure that I take over the role of Chairperson on the
Board of Directors for Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Firstly, I must extend huge thanks, from myself and other members
of the Board, to Gail Nicholls. Gail did an incredible job as our
Chairperson and will continue to play an integral role in the organization
as our Past Chair. Gail has left Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind in
an excellent state as we continue our mandate to provide professionally
trained guide dogs to visually impaired Canadians.
I have been involved with Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind for
approximately twenty years in various capacities. I have the utmost
respect and admiration for the clients we serve, and I am proud to
play a part in assisting them with their mobility requirements.
Enthusiasm for the cause has spread to my own personal company as
well, RE/MAX metro-city realty ltd., as well as my salepeople, as we
eagerly organize a fundraising golf tournament for Canadian Guide
Dogs annually in Ottawa.
It is with great anticipation that I look to the future of Canadian
Guide Dogs for the Blind. I have included a listing of all of our Board
members who share the same goals as I do in continuing the growth
and development of the organization that we are proud to be
involved with.

ELSA
Elsa, (1987-2004) my first guide dog,
enriched my life with her devotion and
companionship. What an incredible life we
shared. I, along with my family and
friends, will always remember you.
Rest in peace little Elsa.
Karen Fitz-Gerald
SOONER
Sooner was donated to Canadian Guide
Dogs for the Blind from Guiding Eyes, New
York in 1994 and was Stud Dog for
Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind litters
U, V, W, Z & C. He was companion for
retired guide dog Folley and is sadly missed
by her and Carol & Ivan Barclay.
KOLA
Kola, a female golden retriever, was born
June 5, 1993. She was puppy walked by
Pat Barrett and Greg Prue, and became a
guide dog for Anna Vimini in Espanola,
Ontario. Kola retired in the fall of 2003.
She passed away on February 18, 2005.
Kola will be sadly missed.
VARGO
Vargo was the working guide dog of
Ottawa resident Marty Jones. Marty and
Vargo were a terrific team. Vargo was not
only a wonderful guide dog for Marty, but
also helped to put smiles on the faces of
others as a therapy dog. Marty and Vargo
attended many special events for Canadian
Guide Dogs for the Blind, and Vargo was
always ready to represent our organization
as a quality guide dog.
Tributes to Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind dogs ONLY may be submitted to the Side by Side editor for our next edition by
August 31, 2005. ç

Breeding Stock Holders Required
Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is looking for people in the Ottawa
area who are interested in becoming breeding stock holders. This is a
long term commitment in which a non-spayed bitch or non-neutered
stud dog lives in the person’s home. An adult must be home during the
day and have their own transportation, plus the home must have a secure
yard. The female dog would be whelped, initially under supervision, in the
family’s home where the puppies will stay until they are approximately
eight weeks of age. Ownership of breeding stock dogs is retained by
Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. Food and all veterinary expenses
are provided. ç

Obituaries
DUGDALE, STANLEY
Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind is saddened by the
passing of Stanley Dugdale on March 29, 2005. As proprietors of The Swan at Carp, a British pub and restaurant in Carp, Ontario, the Dugdales were long-time contributors to our cause. The Dugdales came to Canada
from the U.K. with knowledge of guide dogs. Since the
late 1980’s, The Swan at Carp raised money through having a guider at their location, as well as hosting many special events, including gourmet dinners and trivial pursuit
nights. For many locals in the Carp area, the Swan at
Carp golf tournament in support of Canadian Guide
Dogs was always highly anticipated. Many of our clients
with guide dogs also enjoyed the atmosphere and food at
The Swan at Carp, as it became a tradition to spend one
evening out at the restaurant each time we had a new
group of clients in training to receive guide dogs. Stan
sold the business in 2004. Our long standing relationship with Stan and the numerous guide dogs he sponsored will not be forgotten.
HANNA, JOHN
John passed away on April 11, 2005. John had three
guide dogs from Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind,
including his latest “Danford”, a black lab he had
received in 1998. Raised in Almonte, Ontario, John was
a resident of Smiths Falls, Ontario and very well known
by many in the community. Known as “Singer John”, he
was a self-taught singer and guitar player. John was a
regular entertainer in area nursing homes, hospitals and
at benefit concerts. He was especially well received by
the residents of Lombard Manor. Loving to share his gift
of music with anyone, John was once quoted as saying,
“To get in there, and get their spirits up a bit, that’s what
I like”. John’s spirit will carry on to all those who enjoyed
his talents and friendship.

Israel Guide Dog Center for the Blind
Canadian Guide Dogs for the
Blind is a founding member of
the International Guide Dog
Federation. We are pleased to
have cooperation with many
guide dog schools internationally,
and are excited to announce our
donation of two future guide
dogs to the Israel Guide Dog

Both puppies are being fostered
by volunteers in Toronto until
they are old enough to fly, at
which time they will be sent to
Israel to begin their training to
become guide dogs for the
visually impaired clients they will
eventually be matched with.
‘Kendall’ is with volunteer Linda
Brager, while ‘Lacy’ is with
volunteer Avi Charney.
Canadian Guide Dogs for the
Blind has donated several dogs
to the Israel Guide Dog Center in
past years. In a statement to

QLT & Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind
Gillian shared her story of what life
was like for her after losing her
sight as an adult. The presentation
was very moving and everyone
came away with a greater understanding and appreciation of what
life is like for people suffering from
the challenges of losing their sight.
Gillian's story was very inspirational
as employees listened to how she
had not only overcome these
challenges but also excelled in her
new life and career.
Submitted by
Michelle Waugh & Kristen Rowley,
QLT Inc.
This year marks the conclusion of a
five-year sponsorship commitment
that QLT Inc. made to Canadian
Guide Dogs for the Blind in 1999.
Since then, QLT has donated
$325,000 to the organization to
help train new puppies as guide
dogs for the visually impaired. On
September 23, 2004 Gail Nicholls,
Chairperson of CGDB’s Board of
Directors, came to Vancouver to
present a beautiful piece of art to
Paul Hastings, President and CEO,
QLT Inc., in honour of the company's generous
support. In addition, Mr. Hastings and Julia Levy,
Executive Chairman, Scientific Advisory Board, were
both presented with matching statues of guide dogs.
During the presentation, QLT employees had an
opportunity to listen to Gillian, a recipient of one of
the QLT sponsored guide dogs, named Kaslo.
Truly, QLT's five-year sponsorship
to CGDB has made a meaningful
difference in the lives of many
people.
Our alliance with CGDB has been very special and
our funding has helped sponsor over 20 dogs. We
are pleased to know that six dogs have completed
the training program and are now working with
their visually impaired partners across Canada. ç
Open Houses & Tours
Canadian Guide Dogs for the
Blind continues to work our
public relations campaigns, as we
attempt to introduce the public
into the world of guide dogs.
It remains a common misconception that we are affiliated with
the Canadian National Institute
for the Blind. This is something
that is not true. Canadian Guide
Dogs for the Blind is an independent registered Canadian
charitable organization. We rely
on individual and corporate
donations plus our own fundraising initiatives to operate.
Each year, Canadian Guide Dogs
for the Blind opens its doors to
the public with several Open
Houses at our National Office &
Training Centre in Manotick,
Ontario.
Our 2005 Open Houses have
been scheduled on the following
days from 11:00am – 3:00pm:
Saturday, June 4, 2005
Wednesday, August 3, 2005 ç

Fundraising Dinner & Auction
Our fourth annual Fundraising
Dinner & Auction occurred on
November 4, 2004. We moved
to a new venue, which proved to
be a great choice. The ninety
people attending were pleased
with the beautiful atmosphere of
the Monterey Inn Resort Hotel in
Ottawa. The dinner was wonderful, and the auction was
incredible fun. This was thanks
largely in part to our special
guest auctioneer, Stuntman Stu
from 106.9 The Bear in Ottawa.
Stu added a great comedic element and was a very talented
auctioneer too! As it has been
each year, a first-class return trip
from Ottawa to Vancouver
aboard Via Rail Canada was the
highlighted item of the evening.
The $7,000 excursion, donated
by Via Rail, has traditionally
become the final auctioned item
of the event, adding to the anticipation and excitement.
Congratulations to Mr. John
Kenny, the successful bidder, and
our thanks to Via Rail for their
continued support of our auction. We are looking forward to
conducting this auction once
again in November 2005, and
are currently seeking donations
for auction items. Please see our
ad in this newsletter for more
details. ç

Charity Motorcycle Ride
It was another hugely successful
year for the annual motorcycle
ride in support of Canadian
Guide Dogs for the Blind. Very
much dependent on good weather, September 12th turned into a
beautiful day, and approximately
160 local motorcycle riders participated in the event. The ride is
organized by the Ottawa River
Riders Virago Owners Club
Chapter, but is an all-brand
event. The ride was a route from
Manotick to Calabogie and back,
encompassing about two-hundred kilometres. Following the
ride, all participants enjoyed a
barbecue, biker games, and more
than 130 door prizes were given
away. We are extremely grateful
to the V.O.C. club for their continued dedication to our cause.
When all was said and done, the

Your Company Can Help…..
Canadian Dogs for the Blind receives no
government funding. A large portion of
our revenue comes from the business
community. There are many ways that
you and your company or place of
business can help us in raising funds to
provide professionally trained guide dogs
to visually impaired Canadians. Some
are on a larger scale, while others are
fun and creative ways. Remember, every
little bit helps! Here are some ideas:
FINANCIAL DONATIONS
Your company can make a donation to
Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind. For
a $500 donation, you’ll receive a token
photo of a puppy.
SPONSORSHIPS
Larger or established companies may
wish to sponsor a guide dog. For a
$5,000 donation, you’ll have the opportunity to name a guide dog. This specific dog will be sponsored by your company and you’ll receive regular updates
on the status of this dog’s training.
GIFTS IN KIND
up days” or be creative with ideas like
“dress in red days” or “hockey logos
days”, whatever you can think of!
Donate an item or service to our organization. We are often seeking items to use
in our Fundraising Auction or as door prizes
at our Fundraising Walks. If you have an
item or service that you think would be
of value to us in some way let us know.
BAKE SALES
MATCHING DONATION PARTNERSHIPS
BRING YOUR DOG TO WORK DAY
Have employees of your company donate
funds to Canadian Guide Dogs for the
Blind. As a company, match the amount
of money that each employee agrees to
donate. You could even do this through
a small payroll deduction.
EMPLOYEE VOLUNTEERING
Have your company contribute a team
of volunteers for a day. We may be able
to use your volunteer services at our
Training Centre or at a fundraising event.
This helps us and increases staff morale
and teambuilding.
CASUAL FRIDAYS
Collect funds in your office in exchange
for casual Fridays. If you’re office is less
formal, you could reverse it into “dress
Have everyone in your office bake a
dessert. Then hold a bake sale or raffle
the yummy treats to people in the office.
If everyone in the office is allergy-free,
host a “bring your dog to work day”.
Have employees contribute a specific
amount of money for the permission to
bring their dog to work for one special day.
IN-OFFICE AUCTIONS
If your company has “perks” for your
clients, use them to support Canadian
Guide Dogs for the Blind on occasion.
Do you have hockey tickets, concert
tickets, green fees, promotional items,
etc.? Rather than give everything to your
clients, treat your staff well too. Offer
them a chance to purchase modestly
priced raffle tickets to win these “perks”
and donate the proceeds to Canadian
Guide Dogs for the Blind. ç

Labradoodles
Canadian Guide Dogs for the
Blind graduated its first
Labradoodle in 2004. ‘Andrews’
is now working as a Guide Dog
in Whitby, Ontario.
The Labradoodle is a cross
between the Labrador Retriever
and Standard Poodle. This
example of logical and planned
cross breeding was created by
the Guide Dogs of Victoria in
Australia in the 1980’s. The
goal was to create a new ‘breed’
with the best attributes of the
original breeds. Specifically, the
objective was to produce Guide
Dogs that do not shed as much
hair, for people with allergies.
Labradoodle Guide Dogs have
been successfully trained and
placed in Australia, Hawaii, and
the United Kingdom. ç

Pet Country Estate Open House
Sunday, September 19th, 2004 marked the first
annual “Pet Country Estate” OPEN HOUSE in
support of Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind.
Located just south of Barrie in Innisfil, Ontario, owner
Liz Gordon – a local breeder along with head trainer
Jim Gilchrist, are proud supporters of Canadian
Guide Dogs for the Blind’s “Guider Project”. For
several years, they’ve collected funds from their
clients and visitors to donate to the organization.
Wanting to do “something special” for guide dogs and
their users throughout Simcoe County, their 10-acre
facility was host to numerous activities for the whole
family including agility & obedience demonstrations
in their nationally-accredited training fields, a silent
auction, and “golden and sheltie parades”.
People found “paws-itively great bargains” at the
vendor tables, and were even serenaded by The
Backroads Barbershop Quartet during the barbeque. In all, over 700 attended, many with dogs of
their own, to enjoy what turned out to be a glorious
day in the sun! Attendance and funds raised surpassed everyone’s expectations!
Pet Country Estate and Canadian Guide Dogs for
the Blind would like to thank all participants, volunteers & sponsors for making this day such an incredible success. The second annual ‘Open House is set
for Sunday, September 18th, 2005.
Pictured performing is the Backroads Barbershop
Quartet, part of the festivities at Pet Country
Estate’s Open House.
Editor’s Note:
This article was contributed by Brian & Donna Adam,
CGDB volunteers who helped organize the aforementioned
event and also included this note:
“As owners of the late “Josie” (retired guide dog #204),
and current owners of career change dog “Waldon”,
we are very proud of our ongoing association with
Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind, and know first-hand
how truly amazing these animals really are.” ç
Stamp Program
Canadian Guide Dogs for the Blind collects used postage stamps to raise funds for our organization.
We collect special issues, commemorative, and foreign stamps, but not everyday Canadian or American
stamps. Either drop off your stamps at our Training Centre in Manotick, Ontario or place them in an
envelope and mail them to us. Please note that we are unable to pick up stamps. These stamps are
trimmed and sorted by volunteers, and sold to a local dealer. ç

The Guide Dog Founders’
Path & Garden
The Guide Dog Founders’ Path & Garden still has
lots of bricks waiting to be engraved. It’s your
opportunity to celebrate or commemorate the life
of your pet. It’s also a great gift idea. Many people
choose to purchase a brick in remembrance of
their friends’ pets.
The Guide Dog Founders’ Path & Garden is located
on the front of our property in Manotick, Ontario
and is accessible to the general public anytime from
spring to autumn. Call us to confirm your brick‘s
location and, then, feel welcome to come and see
it for yourself.
The price of our engraved bricks is $50, taxes included.
Please note that charitable tax receipts ARE NOT
issued for brick orders. For an order form contact
us by email at [email protected] or call
(613) 692-7777. Order forms are also available
on our website at www.guidedogs.ca ç
