INTRODUCING…EVENT
CONCIERGE SUPERSTARS!
We are incredibly fortunate and thankful to all our volunteers that help make our
signature events a huge success. Darrell and Emily Kuzma are one of our most dedicated
volunteer couples who go above and beyond to make all our attendees feel welcomed
and excited at our events.
THE KUZMA FAMILY SPOTLIGHT
Why do you volunteer at Saint Mary's Foundation events? Community service and
volunteerism were strongly encouraged throughout our educational careers, and it made
sense to participate as volunteers at Saint Mary's events. We were first asked to be volunteers
for the Gala, Welcome, and thought that it would be a great experience, while allowing us a
chance to dress up!
That year the Gala was held in a huge outside tent in one of the hospital's parking lots. We
were so surprised about the location, but it was very extravagant and so much fun! That
night we met the Saint Mary's Foundation team and they were all so nice, and it didn't even
feel like volunteering, we just had a really great time.
What are your favorite events? Our favorite event to volunteer together at is Up On the Roof
because it's a more laid back and casual event. We also really like that it's held downtown
at a Mercy Health Saint Mary's facility. It's a chance for the donors and the volunteers to see
some aspects of what the organization has to offer not only to patients, but to the patient's
families as well.
My personal favorite event is the Shoppe Soirée. I LOVE that it's an all-women's event. Talking
about and contributing to women's health is so important to me, and I think that women
helping other women in their quest to understand their health is beneficial. Having a strong
community of women openly address health issues makes other women more comfortable
in knowing 'they are not alone.'
What was your most memorable volunteer moment? Our most memorable moment
was when Rachel Jonaitis, Manager of Volunteer & Hospitality Services and Donor Relations,
contacted me asking if Darrell and I would be able to dress up in festive German costumes
for the Haus Party, which was being held in a few short hours. We pulled some strings and
we showed up and had a great time volunteering!
Thank you Emily and Darrell for all your support and volunteering efforts!

PINNACLE WINTER 2016
GRAND IMPACT:
SUPPORTING AND
TRANSFORMING HEALTH
CARE AT MERCY HEALTH
SAINT MARY'S
In 2015, Saint Mary's Foundation Grand Girlfriends™ and
grandettes awarded the following grants to programs and
services at Mercy Health Saint Mary's.
•
The Mercy Health Lacks Cancer Center received $4,000
to purchase evidence-based skin products for 160 women
receiving radiation therapy for breast cancer.
•
To initiate an activity cart for use exclusively by long-term
antepartum patients with a projected length of stay at least
48 hours prior to birth of infant, The Birth Center at Mercy
Health Saint Mary's received $5,500. This program will
provide diversional activities, a video prenatal education
program, and other options to decrease boredom and anxiety
associated with long-term hospitalization.
•
In an effort to enhance every part of the patient's experience,
The Mercy Health Comprehensive Breast Center received
$1,500 to purchase 240 new kimono gowns for women to
wear when getting their mammograms.
In addition, we are pleased to announce the winner of the 2015
Grand Award chosen by the membership of the Saint Mary's
Foundation Grand Guys™! $4,500 was available to award this year
and below are the grants that will be funded:
•
Sparta Health Center will receive $2,500 for fever kits that
include a digital thermometer and basic information about
fevers, which will help families be better equipped to know
when to seek medical and/or emergency care. Sparta Health
Center, one of Mercy Health's Community Benefit Ministries,
provides primary and specialty care to a large number of
migrant families living at or below poverty levels. Many of
these patients lack even the most basic health education and
tools for effective parenting and childcare. Knowing when
a child has a fever and needs to be seen by a physician is a
foreign concept to many of these families.
•
To purchase various therapeutic equipment that will offer longterm relief to their patients, Heartside Health Center will receive
$1,500 for their pain clinic. Heartside, one of Mercy Health's
Community Benefit Ministries, provides primary and specialty care
to a large number of individuals living at or below poverty levels.
And here is the really grand news… one of our Grand Guys
has decided to anonymously donate to purchase the Mucositis
kits for Radiation Oncology Patients. And one of our very own
Grand Girlfriends, Rosalind Ebrom, and her husband Dr. J. Stephen
Ebrom (also a Grand Guy) have contributed an additional $5,000
toward the purchase of kimono gowns. Additionally, Saint Mary's
Foundation will match their gift so that all women (not just
those who are there for mammograms) served by the Mercy
Health Comprehensive Breast Center will be able to wear one of
the new kimono tops. How grand is all of this?

HEALING THROUGH
COMMUNITY GENEROSITY
Saint Mary's Foundation is grateful for our community partners to help transform
the health of our community. Thank you for your support!
Feel Good Holiday Story Alert! Tiffany Elzinga wanted to teach her second graders about
giving back to the community, especially at Christmas time. Having experienced the amazing
care in the NICU at Mercy Health Saint Mary's firsthand with her baby, she thought the NICU
would be a great choice for a community project. During the second graders' holiday party,
they made a few blankets for these precious babies, and loved every minute of it!
Keeping in the holiday spirit, Saint Mary's Foundation would like to also thank the Grand
Valley State University Student Athlete Advisory Council for providing 200 holiday cards
and delivering them to our patients at Mercy Health!

HAVASTACHE
RAISING AWARENESS FOR MEN'S HEALTH
Saint Mary's Foundation would like to thank Haviland
Enterprises for its unique event, Havastache, which helped raise
$1,000 for the Mercy Health Lacks Cancer Center and awareness
for men’s health issues, while creating a fun way to compete.
John Bereza, Marketing Manager at Haviland Enterprises said, “We
challenged as many men as possible to shave clean on October
31st, and then to grow and maintain a clean mustache for the
entire month of November. We also encouraged these men to raise
donations on their behalf, and after a little encouragement, 11 of
Haviland’s finest volunteered. Our 11th volunteer was Don Alexander,
who was clean-shaven for the first time since 1971! Eventually, we
had a live judging where we awarded our winner, Milo Fortier.”

PINNACLE WINTER 2016
IN LOVING
MEMORY
It is with great sadness that we share
the passing of Vice President of Human
Resources, Tom Karel.
Colleagues Kelli Smith, Michelle Hinshaw and Tara Geror
A SPECIAL THANK YOU:
CELEBRATING OUR "PARTNERS
IN HEALTH"
Saint Mary's Foundation is fortunate
to have colleagues, physicians and
volunteers that generously donate to
our annual giving campaign, Partners
in Health. On February 15th, Bill Manns,
President of Mercy Health Saint Mary's,
invited members of the President’s Circle,
which are employees who contributed
amounts equal to one or two days of paid
time off in the past year, to a celebratory
reception. His remarks included praise
and gratitude for the compassionate
impact offered to the families and
patients we serve. He said:
President Bill Manns said the following
about Tom: "Tom was a trusted colleague
and visionary leader. I learned a great
deal from Tom about the importance of
making people our top area of focus. He
was committed to ensuring we hired the
right people to help protect and enhance
our culture. I will miss Tom's energy, vision,
and passion for our work."
Dr. J. Stephen Ebrom and
Michelle Rabideau
"I continue to be so proud of the strong culture of giving within
our organization and within the community. And I am very
grateful for each of you as members of the President's Circle who
make a leadership gift as part of our annual giving campaign.
Last year, Saint Mary's Foundation awarded $2.5 million back
to various programs and services at Mercy Health Saint Mary's.
Philanthropy touched every one of our programs, which means
that philanthropy – the generous spirit of giving – touched the
patients and families we serve every day."
We are incredibly proud of our
organization and the support
they offer to the hospital and the
health of our community. Thank
you for being a key role in helping
us share a great story of impactful
philanthropy throughout Mercy
Health Saint Mary's!
•
Katie Halloran and Matt Cook
"Tom touched many lives, both inside
and outside of our organization," said
Sam Tower, director, Human Resources.
"He was a visionary leader who helped
shape our culture for more than a decade.
His passion for helping others and
commitment to doing what was right
is what made him such a great leader,
mentor, and friend. His presence will be
missed greatly, but his spirit will remain
with us for many years to come."
Tom was also a dedicated supporter to
the Saint Mary's Foundation, and we
are grateful for his enthusiasm to help
transform the health of our community
through philanthropy. The Tom Karel Fund
for Colleague Leadership and Development
was created in his name as a tribute to his
colleagues, family and community who
will greatly miss his bright personality,
leadership and inspiration. Please join us
in praying for Tom and his family.
•
Tom and his wife Marilyn celebrating at our
annual Gala, Welcome, which benefited Sophia's
House, a Guest House that provides a homeaway-from-home for patients and families who
travel to Mercy Health Saint Mary's for treatment.
