Christian Home Educator’s Fellowship
Issue #10
I picked up on an enlightening subject at the April CHEF Home School
Convention that has caused me to reconsider the way Monica and I teach our
children. This most interesting subject is “Learning Styles”. [The CD from Convention can still be obtained.]
When I think back to my school days I remember some classes where I
would learn just fine and others where I would struggle. Why? Do you
struggle with teaching one of your children more than the other(s)? Why?
Do all of your children learn the same way? No way! Because,
THEY ARE NOT THE SAME! We are uniquely created!
Some of us/them are visual learners. Some are auditory learners. Some are
kinesthetic learners. So, does your child learn best by sight, hearing, or by
touching and doing? Can your child sit for long periods or short periods?
Can your child work alone or need hands on help? Is your child great at
spelling but forgets the names of things? How about colors verses shapes?
What about sounds and songs and doodling and daydreaming?
Think about concrete–vs-abstract fashion. Then there is sequential–vsrandom fashion. Does your child’s personality fall under concrete
sequential, abstract sequential, concrete random, or abstract random??? Does your child’s understanding come under analytical or global??? Wow!!
Now, I’m not trying to deflate your end of the school year balloon, but I am
trying to help you have a better next year!! Proverbs 22:6 instructs us to
train up a child in the way he should go. We will be able to teach, train, and
educate him/her if we better understand our child. Do some research on the
above “Learning Styles” and discover how much fun home schooling can be
when your child grasps what you teach because the subject is presented the
way he/she learns best. I did and am finding a better understanding about
myself as well as my children.
Remember, our children are learning from us!
