Debbie G These are just some of our fantastic events planned for this year – full details are published at the back of the magazine. To book your ticket contact the Fellowship office on 01295 724579. Thirty-plus beautiful hair style images were submitted to hairdressing’s top organisation The Fellowship, to be considered for the coming season’s Signature Style – a collection of consumer-friendly images used to promote British hairdressing at its finest in both the consumer and trade press. Judging the imagery were top educator Debbie G, ghd International Creative Director Andreas Stavrou and Immediate Media's Sophie Jordan. Commented Debbie G: “Judging was anonymous but it was clear that entries came from hairdressers of a very high level, major hairdressing names. The bar was very high and it was a tall order to choose outright winners. It just goes to show the quality of work and commitment to excellence that lives within The Fellowship.” Flick to page 5 to meet the team. Team travel to both South Africa and San Diego with both trips generously supported by two of our key sponsors ghd and UNITE respectively. Finding a minute or two to put pen to paper seems to be getting more difficult than ever before especially as we head in to the final quarter of 2012 and what’s traditionally the busiest time for our profession both on and off the salon floor! Whether you’re salon based or attending any number of awards ceremonies, trade shows and industry gatherings this is the season where you need plenty of energy! We are delighted to report that one of our most recent initiatives has indeed captured the imagination of our industry – the Fellowship Photographic Workshop. This innovative 3 day workshop invited members to undertake their own photographic shoot with a fabulous team of mentors led by Kai Wan behind the lens and award winning duo Tracey Devine and Janer Stewart offering artistic direction at its very best. One of our key supporters Schwarzkopf played host at their central London ASK Academy throughout. Whilst on the subject of photography – this issue officially announces the Fellowship Signature Stylists for Autumn/Winter 2012. Tasha Stevens of Jamie Stevens, Ian Davies of Ocean, Yesmin O’Brien of seanhanna and Sean Tetlow of The Colour Room’s fabulous imagery will play a role in the Fellowships’ Autumn/Winter Consumer Campaign. This month that same torch of ‘Creative Excellence’ is carried even further afield as our very own F.A.M.E. Team travel to both South Africa and San Diego with both trips generously supported by two of our key sponsors ghd and UNITE respectively. Accompanied by their mentors the team will perform a series of educational seminars that will fly the flag for both the Fellowship and British hairdressing. Photo-Hair 3 Day Workshop BY ASHLEIGH HODGES Following on from an amazing invitation to present for UNITE in San Diego, the F.A.M.E. Team spent a wonderful morning with team UNITE learning all about the brand and their innovative product range. Meeting up on a Sunday morning at the London Beauty College F.A.M.E. Team quartet Ashleigh Hodges of Flame Hair Studios in Towcester, Becky Hunt of Sanrizz in Southampton, Isabella Hyde from House of Rush in Piccadilly and Ryan Harris from Angels, Aberdeen were introduced to UNITES’ key educators Steven and Jennifer who had flown in from the USA especially to brief the team and a host of salon owners and stylists who wished to train as educators of the brand. Steven spent the morning talking through the background of UNITE founded by a hairdresser. He then went on to explain the different product categories, what they do and how best to use them showing us how best to cocktail the products to achieve specific looks, holds and finishes. We each took away some brilliant references to absorb. Following a break, we then met with Jennifer to discuss the F.A.M.E. Team’s impending trip to San Diego! Jennifer was not only able to answer a host of questions that we had, but talked us through, step by step what was indeed expected of us at UNITE’S GLOBAL SESSION. Each of us admit that we indeed found Team UNITE so wonderfully accommodating and willing to cater and address our individual needs.Everything sounded so very exciting. We’ve since planned to undertake two cuts and two hairdressing models and also input into UNITE’S fashion show to be held whilst we are over there. The best part of the day was however the presentation from UNITE’S Managing Director, Tony White - two fabulous boxes of UNITE products to take home and practise with! Needless to say we are hopelessly excited and look forward to San Diego and working with the UNITE team. What is becoming a fabulous annual opportunity – the Fellowship’s Photo-Hair 3 Day Workshop invited members to have the opportunity to work with mentors multi award winning Tracey Devine and Janer Stewart from Angels, Kai Wan from pkai hair, Emma Donaldson and Bernard Connolly. FM 08 FM 09 Meet the NEW Member Split over three days the course covered three aspects of achieving a photo-finish. First day undertaken by Janer Stewart and Kai Wan invited the 6 participants to bring ideas on what they hoped to achieve from a shoot with a clear demonstration from both as to how to do hair for a shoot, plan and execute. Opening the course Janer asked the audience why they indeed wanted to do the shoot and what they hoped to use their end result for. Moving on Janer led the team through concepts, inspiration, how to put a team together – from makeup to fashion stylist and of course how to find a photographer, professional models and coordinate a casting. With lots of interaction, it was a fun, informative creative thinking day enjoyed by all. Day two – undertaken by Tracey Devine and Kai Wan was when members were asked to bring along their own models on whom they would work and develop new ideas to be used at the photographic hair day. Alongside which Tracey discussed the merits of pr and placing the finished looks within trade and consumer titles. Tracey drew upon her wealth of experience and shared some strong key messages of do's and don’ts when it came to creating photographic hair. The final day, again undertaken by Tracey Devine and Kai Wan, was the shoot, joined by fashion stylist Bernard Connolly and make-up artist Emma Donaldson, each member was able to create two looks from their model to meet their own criteria. All extraordinarily keen to get going everyone turned up early and contributed towards this amazing day with each both achieving and learning so much. Tracey Devine art-directing each to create their chosen looks and prepare them for the camera. Each student commented on the amount of knowledge they had gained in preparing photographic hair and how it differed from dressing hair in a salon situation. Bernard Connolly, Fashion Stylist then carefully chose outfits to compliment both the hair and makeup undertaken by Emma Donaldson. Once the total look was achieved, the model was taken through to Kai’s ‘pop-up’ studio within the academy. Kai has an eye for shooting hair which has led to many successful campaigns. The academy was full of energy and a creative buzz as the models came to life in front of the camera. Leigh-Anne Regan The Fellowship is delighted to welcome Leigh-Anne Regan from the Rachel Hammond salon in Leicester to its prestigious membership. How did your career in hairdressing begin? What has been the biggest moment in your/your salons career? I began my hairdressing career in Leicester when I was 16, my goal at the time was to reach the highest level of stylist in the salon. Everything related to fashion inspires me so a huge learning curve for me in terms of where I want to take my career was working on the last four seasons of London Fashion Week. I took great pride in seeing my work on the runway. My new goal is to be the ‘trendsetter’ of the hair world – I want my work to one day stimulate and inspire others. What did you do next? Once I had succeeded in reaching my goal, I felt I wanted to enhance my skill set and look at how I could take my career into a new direction. I auditioned and became part of the ghd art team in 2010 a role I have enjoyed for nearly 3 years. Throughout this time I have had the opportunity to learn from some of the best in the industry. I also decided to move salons and take on a new role as assistant manager at the Rachel Hammond salon in Leicester. Where is your salon/where are your salons? For the second consecutive year I have hosted the Fellowship Photo-Hair Workshop and this has been by far the most inspiring of them all! This is truly a worthwhile date for anyone who wants to ensure that they will rise to be one of the new stars in the industry! Tracey Devine FM 10 We have two Rachel Hammond hairdressing salons in Leicester. I work in our new city centre salon, which has been open just over a year. The company are very encouraging to the team to expand their roles both in and out of the salon. What’s so special about them? The city centre salon feels more like a studio than a salon, and consequently the team can't help but feel like artists when we are there! We have a very talented team, with two of us working on the ghd team, and another on the L’Oréal id programme, there is a lot of inspiration around for the team as well as clients. We encourage everyone to learn and stay current on trends and techniques, as well as providing a fantastic service we offer complimentary refreshments which include our very own brand of Rachel Hammond ice cream! What’s your next step? To become a member of the F.A.M.E. Team! To acquire a greater skill set and make my way through the session world.programme so it’s a very busy time! Tell us five words to describe yourself/your salon? Enthusiastic, inquisitive, ambitious, optimistic, happy! Who would you most like to meet/have met? I've been lucky to have met and been taught by some very influential people in our industry including Akin Konizi, Zoe Irwin and Kenna each have really they helped me to mould how I work as a hairstylist. I would love to meet Guido and went to an event not so long ago where he was being interviewed and I found him fascinating and modest – he's an inspiration in every sense of the word! What are the best things in your life? Is it bad to say my i pad? Ha! My family and friends are the most honest people in my life and they are the greatest people to have around as they support me every step of the way, work wise I’d be lost without my iPad and my books! Do you have a motto/does your salon have a strap line? I don't have a motto as such, maybe I'll develop one further down the path. Why did you join The Fellowship? To learn from the best in the business and to gain a further understanding of the industry. To give me the platform to explore the world of hair and further my ability to succeed. FM 13 Watch the Birdie PHOTOGRAPHS BY RAYMOND BIRD A very sad day indeed when the Fellowship’s fabulous photographer Raymond Bird announced to the Fellowship Council that it was time to concentrate his endeavours on other areas. Raymond has worked for the Fellowship tirelessly since the 70’s and has been a constant at every Fellowship event – either as a spectator, mentor, editor or latterly behind the lens. FM editor (who will miss him more than most), Julie Bellinger-Gibb, caught up with Ray on one of his recent photographic assignments. When did you first become involved with the Fellowship? I first joined the Fellowship in the early seventies at the request of Daniel Barton who overheard me whinging about our profession at a show we were presenting in Toronto. Daniel said “If you were to join The Fellowship for British Hairdressing – united we can change things and we will have the governments ear.” How do you think the Fellowship has changed over the years? In some ways not at all and in others beyond contemplation. The core values are still in place but the Fellowship has grown in FM 14 Following your editorship of FM – you have gone on to edit your own publication. What is it about publishing that you most enjoy? so many areas. We could never have seen the amazing success of the F.A.M.E. Team for example. To me that reflects the true spirit of ‘Fellowship’, the biggest names in hairdressing today giving their time free of charge to mentor the young members of the F.A.M.E. Team. Also we never imagined we would be in a position to provide such great education programs such as Project X, The Colour Project and of course the latest initiative – the youth arm of the Fellowship ClubStar. Imagery and truth. By publishing images and words in our publication ColourSoft, it is possible to showcase the work of individuals and in doing so endorse how great either their work or they are. The most exciting aspect is uncovering new talent which isn’t always the most recognisable names in the hairdressing industry, apart from Daniel Galvin OBE not many colourists achieve the acclaim they should be credited for. Editor Tanya Hennessey and myself have answered a niche market in over 70 countries, and through ColourSoft, salute the work of colour technicians worldwide. When did you swap your scissors and assume the role of inventor? When did you first realise that you loved life behind the lens? It was more of a need really! In the 1980’s I was always found experimenting with hair colour and although I found foil was sufficient for achieving great highlights, I needed a product that would help me achieve the new techniques I had created. I had found my first ingredient a re-sealable adhesive and from this I built enough sample envelopes to do a demonstration for Pam Gough at L’Oréal. Pam was always interested in my work and often said “that I hid my light under a bushel”. Fortunately Pam saw the potential in what I was trying to do and Easi-Meche was born. My last year at school they locked me in the darkroom and just kept the films coming for me to develop and print. However, it was as a hairdresser when I was 18 that I was sent with my model to a basement studio in High Street Kensington where I was met by a very large young man who turned out to be Terence Donavon, one of the famous three cockney photographers of the 60’s. To watch him work and achieve the finished result really made me question whether I had taken the right career path. What's the most memorable image you have ever taken? I think of all the images I have taken for the Fellowship the one I will always remember is of our President interviewing our Patron of Honour Vidal Sassoon. It is an image that tells so many stories. Vidal was so ill but his pure professionalism meant that he didn't show it. It is one of the final images taken of Vidal and it was a great honour for me to be able to take it. You are now handing over your role of Fellowship photographer to some up and coming guys and girls. In your remit what have you told them? As I said earlier the Fellowship has really grown and consequently the calendar has grown with it and therefore so much photographic work needed. It has just become too much work for one person to undertake properly. We have mentored a great team who are eager to take over the reins. The new team are now equipped with the relevant technical expertise, along with the simple facts of how to cover an event and capture strong fashion images. How will you be focusing your energies now? Although ColourSoft is currently a free on-line quarterly plans are in the pipeline to take the magazine to monthly via the newsstands. There is also another ‘invention’ to be launched! FM 15 Meet the Member Project X collection Zoe irwin-style! Gill Berry Gill Berry, owner of Hug 8 in Uxbridge and a member of the JOICO® UK Design Team What do you see outside your office window? A noodle bar and flats. What’s the best thing about the area where your salon is? The latest fabulous day enjoyed by the lucky Fellowship Project X students was a shoot directed by mentor Zoe Irwin and photographed by Mo Nabbach. “We took our inspiration from key catwalk trends, looking at what’s coming up and making the textures and shapes easy to wear and beautiful. The team focused on using product to achieve maximum shine as heavily-glossed sleeked hair is a trend that is big for the coming season.” The shoot took place at the Alan d Academy in London’s West End. Each of the students took an active part in designing and producing the looks, preparing moodboards, creating images and briefing the photographer Mo, stylist Bernard Connelly and make-up artist Sally Crouch. “It was another inspirational day, Zoe’s great at teaching the techniques but letting the group do their own thing and they all loved it!” Karine Jackson Uxbridge is a very historical town, with a mix of buildings dating back to medieval times. It’s home to Brunell university and has a strong business community. Describe your salon in three words? Friendly, individual and professional. What's the first thing you do when you get into the salon? Have a coffee! Then go through my clients for the day and check that the salon is ready. What do you see outside your window at home? Trees, bamboo plants and lots of weeds!! Oh and a family of foxes at the bottom of the garden. Describe your home in three words? Compact, comfortable and private. What's the first thing you do when you get home? How do you relax? I love to go for long walks with my three dogs, Branston, Pickle and Lily. Or just chill with a good book and a nice glass of vino! What's on your bedside table? I don’t have one! New or vintage? If it’s a car then vintage most definitely, if its clothes then new! Shower or bath? A bath with loads of bubbles and candles. Tea or coffee? Both! A double shot of coffee in the morning, a cappuccino in the day and decaf tea in the evening to be precise. Meditation or conversation? Conversation. I’m not very good at meditation; I’m a fidget and can’t sit still long enough to meditate. What's your favourite fragrance? I love DKNY Delicious at the moment. What's your favourite soundtrack? That’s very difficult to say. I love the music in Quadrophenia and Lock Stock and Two Smoking Barrels. Oh, and I don’t mind a bit of sing along to Grease! After a wrestle with three very welcoming Labradors, I check my e.mail before putting my feet up and having a glass of wine! What's for dinner tonight? Watercress and pea shoot salad with peppered salami and parmesan, with a balsamic dressing. For pudding I’m having strawberries and cream, mmmmm! FM 16 FM 17 Philosophy platform for Colour Project Salon Society Ian Davies Ian Davies owns Ocean Hairdressing in Cardiff, is a member of the JOICO® UK Design Team and Fellowship for British Hairdressing's A/W Signature Stylist. What’s your favourite day-to-day men’s/women’s hair product? My favourite everyday hair product is the JOICO® Daily Care Shampoo. It’s the first product that I reach for every morning and it does everything you could possible want from a shampoo, plus more. It’s a real hit with my clients too. What’s your favourite blow-the-budget men’s/women’s hair product? For me, it’s got to be the JOICO® K-Pak Four Step Hair System. There is nothing quite like it in the world, and it always outshines other treatments. It’s completely unique and reconstructs the most damaged of hair within minutes. The latest instalment of this year’s Colour Project course was hosted by none other than Fellowship President, Mark Creed and Philosophy Hairdressing’s Director of Education, Luke Anderson. Held at Alan d Hairdressing Education Centre in Central London, the theme – how to work with different colours, develop unique techniques and sell them to a client. Beginning with cutting techniques, Luke delivered a detailed presentation on how to use geometric patterning to create a modern stance on timeless styles. Mark followed with a demonstration on how to use bold colours to create a flame effect of colour. These techniques were so simple yet instantly updated a look to create a whole new, modern feel. Mark explained that although it’s imperative for a salon’s business to flourish with the development of new colouring and styling techniques, it’s just as important to learn the art of selling a new service in order for a client to try it! He then went on to demonstrate highly effective ways of communicating with your client and how to make sure they feel 100% at ease. In the afternoon each student was given the opportunity to practice what they had learned with guidance from both Mark FM 18 and Luke. All in all it was a highly inspiring day that left all involved feeling motivated and buzzing with ideas! Tanya Hennessey “The Colour Project day with Philosophy is always a big hit with the Colour Project students. Not only are the duo inspirational, informative and most importantly educational, the interaction between mentor and students is a perfect combination. The students always come away with new, quick, effective and exciting ideas to take back and practice in their own salons”. “Not only are the duo inspirational, informative and most importantly educational, the interaction between mentor and students is a perfect combination.” Tanya Hennessey Do you have a favourite hairdressing gadget? I’m a huge fan of the Cloud Nine O. The technology it uses is incredible and it’s great for shoots and everyday styling. What one piece of hair advice should every man/woman know? Treat your hair like fabric. Whether it feels like silk, wool or cotton, learn how your hair reacts to heat styling and work with it accordingly. Hair diagnosis is the key to any successful hair treatment. How did you become a hairdresser? I became a hairdresser by complete accident. One of my school friend’s parents owned a salon, and I was bullied into working there one summer. I’ve never looked back. Whose hair have you cut and whose would you like to get your hands on? I’ve worked with celebrities such as Alwyn Mellor, Patsy Palmer, Melinda Messenger and Martine McCutcheon in the past. I’m a real sports fanatic, so I’d really like to get my hands on British Olympic Cyclist, Victoria Pembleton. I’m in total awe of her as an athlete but her hair is so boring! What’s the weirdest thing a client has asked you to do? The most shocking thing, for me, that a client has asked me to do is to shave their head. She was going through chemotherapy at the time, but it was a complete shock for me. I fitted her wig on the same day too. It’s such a personal thing to do for a woman, and is one of the real privileges of being a hairdresser; having your clients trust you and wanting you work with them to make them feel good about themselves. Do men/women tell you their intimate secrets? The longer you work with a client, the more you find out about them, but ultimately I try to keep it professional. I want my clients to come back to me for my professional advice and cutting skills, not for gossip. How would you describe your salon? Warm, welcoming, intimate and friendly. Are you known for any particular style/cut? I don’t have a signature cut, but I am known for being the person who likes to change a style. I have a three cut rule: clients can keep their style for three cut, but after that, I try and persuade them to change their style for something different. Salon music? The music played in the salon varies depending on the time of the day. It’s typically relaxing during the morning, but as the salon gets busier, the music gets heavier and more robust, before slowing down in the evenings. We don’t have MTV, we create own playlists that change depending on the atmosphere. It’s these little details in our service that makes us different from our competitors. FM 19 Isabella Hyde has been in the hairdressing industry for just over 10 years. She works at RUSH Hair’s flagship salon, The House of RUSH, in Piccadilly and is tipped to become a legend in the future, one of this year's amazing F.A.M.E.
