Far away from the maddening cheers of thousands
of spectators, a club match in the outer 'burbs runs
over time. Progression towards the finals hinges
on strong goal defence but in the dying twilight
of a late summer's afternoon, the ball is quickly
becoming elusive to even the youngest eyes...

control unlike any other.
The Sylvania Outdoor Lighting Control System allows the
user total control of all aspects of remote lighting
monitoring, outage and fault reporting and mobile control
of lighting systems down to the individual luminaire.
A user friendly online interface ensures that users have full
visibility into their system regardless of their location with
app development having reached the level where the

AWARD WINNING SUCCESSES
IES Award Winning Design & Installation: Cranbourne Racecourse, VIC
The installation of an energy efficient lighting design
and control system in one of Victoria’s most popular
race courses has gathered international interest and
seen SLA receive two IES Awards: Lighting Design
Excellence for Australia and New Zealand and the
Australian Lighting Energy Efficiency Design Award for
2013.
The Cranbourne Turf Club is a thoroughbred horse
racing Club situated 40km SE of Melbourne. As a
second Victorian night racing venue, Cranbourne
now complements the existing Moonee Valley night
program.
In 2010, under the auspices of Racing Victoria Limited,
Australian Sportsvision Consultants were engaged to
design the lighting and all associated electrical and
control systems for the project.
The lighting design and consequent installation allows
the venue to host as many as fifteen night race
meetings in the normal racing year thus ensuring that
track operators can control their lighting requirements
to meet the needs of race broadcasters as well as
patrons and to meet energy efficiency requirements.
The principle objective was the track needed to be lit
to the required standard for television broadcasting
with the flexibility for lights to be dimmed during nonbroadcast times.
Sylvania completed the final lighting design, supplied
the state-of-the-art lamps, lamp control, dimming
technology and Environ control gear, aimed all the
floodlights and verified the design lighting levels.
The lighting solution employed by Sylvania Lighting
Australasia included the installation of a total of 48
masts at heights ranging between 20mtrs to 25mtrs.

floodlights were installed and focussed to illuminate
the 2200 metre track with a total lighting load for the

system of 1.5MW.
The project drew on the twin expertise of both
Australian Sportsvision Consultants and Sylvania’s
expertise in designing effective lighting solutions for
outdoor sporting and entertainment venues with
an emphasis on ensuring that the installation also
achieves optimal efficiencies in energy consumption.
ISylvania’s Environ System includes the Active
Reactor, a programmable energy management
device that is applicable to a wide range of
commercial lighting applications. For the Cranbourne
installation, the Active Reactor was used to run the
lamps at constant lumens and also to dim the lamps
as necessary. Using the Active Reactor system, by
operating the lamps at constant lumens an energy
saving of 17% is realised, however, by combining this
with dimming an energy saving of 33% is realised.
During the course of a night race meeting the lights
are dimmed before the first race starts, dimmed in
between the races and dimmed after the last race
finishes. Typically the lights are dimmed for 75% of
the time during a race meeting. This not only realises
a 33% energy saving overall but delivers a range of
broader benefits; it increases the life of the lamps and
reduces the obtrusive effects of spill light and glare
into the neighbourhood that borders the track.
The control system has been able to accommodate
the varied requirements throughout the length of a
meet. For constant lumen output, the Active Reactor
control gear was used to run all lamps at constant
lumens to produce a constant 1200 lux on track.
When not needed for broadcast, the lights are
dimmed to 900 lux on track. This is in contrast to the
Photofinish area where during races lighting levels are
pushed up to 3000 lux for the photofinish camera. A
Siemens custom developed PLC control system was
used to control all the switching, sequencing and
monitoring functions of the lighting installation.

Bringing Light to the Home of The Cats, Geelong FC, VIC
The challenge: specify a sports lighting installation
that delivers the level of illumination necessary
to meet broadcast standards for high definition
TV yet also offers enough control to deliver an
environmentally-sensitive solution that is accepted
by surrounding residents and operators of local
commercial properties.
Home to more than forty Australian Rules games per
year, and hosting many other high profile sports and
entertainment events, Simonds Stadium switched on
the lights during June to host the Geelong Football
Club’s first ever night match at the home of the
beloved Geelong Cats AFL team.
Working closely with Aurecon Consulting Engineers
and McKnights Electrical, Sylvania Lighting Australasia
designed, supplied and commissioned a lighting
solution to integrate with the new 70 metre-high
profile masts. These masts have been installed as part
of a multi-million dollar upgrade to Simonds Stadium
to provide lighting for AFL matches that will be
televised in high definition through partner TV stations.

The project was completed with 487 Sylvania/Siteco
2KW Metal Halide floodlights evenly spread over
the four towers (104 off) including 71 roof mounted
floodlights.
Essential to such demands is the need for high
colour rendering lamps. All lamps used deliver colour
rendering of Ra90+ and 5600K colour temperature
which are used for high quality picture definition and
site enhancement.
While the majority of the arena is illuminated from
the high mast towers, roof obstructions from the
Grandstand and stringent floodlight exclusion zones
meant roof mounted floodlights were required
to maintain camera verticals and boundary
illumination near the field perimeter. A combination
of asymmetric and symmetric beam floodlights
were needed to maintain this camera vertical and
horizontal illumination at the field boundaries.
The demands of high definition TV herald a change
in television broadcast sports lighting with sharper
images, greater contrast resulting in more detailed
viewing. The completed lighting was designed to
meet both the AFL and Free TV Australia Operation
Guidelines of digital and high definition televised live
production.
Close offset lighting, employing roof mounted
floodlights, required careful consideration in terms of
the location of the floodlights and the distribution to
help soften intensities. The roof-mounted symmetric
beam floodlights utilised internal glare filters to
reduce intensities and prevent illumination levels
exceeding high limits. This delivers acceptable and
compliant glare limits for spectators and on-field
participants including players.
All non-televised modes comply with the obtrusive
light standard, AS4282-1997 with floodlight elevation
reduced to minimise glare to motorists and brightness
to the surrounding area. This is compliant with strict
Luminous Intensity (level 1 control) and Threshold
Increment parameters. Spill light does not exceed
the maximum permissible values of 10 lux residential
and 25 lux commercial at relevant boundaries thus
maintaining sensitivity to the Stadium’s surrounding

installation facilitates two non-televised modes which
are controlled by a C-bus system and provide for
professional training (200 lux) and competition (500
lux) lighting levels making the lighting installation
extremely adaptable for the needs of a wide range of
purposes.
