Elijah's method of prayer includes asking the people to come near, "thereby involving
them in his action and in his petition."
"His request is that the people finally know -- and know in fullness -- who truly is
their God, and that they make the decisive choice to follow him alone, the true God,"
the Pontiff explained. "For only in this way is God acknowledged as he truly is –
Absolute and Transcendent -- without the possibility of putting him next to other gods,
which would deny him as the Absolute by relativizing him."
"By his intercession, Elijah asks of God what God himself desires to do -- reveal
himself in all his mercy, faithful to his own reality as the Lord of life who forgives,
converts and transforms," he added.

VATICAN CITY, JUNE 15, 2011 (Zenit.org).Benedict XVI today continued his series of teachings
on prayer, drawing on the Prophet Elijah to speak
about the commandment to adore God alone. "True
adoration is love," the Pope said.
Benedict XVI said that what is in question in this account is "the priority of the first
commandment: to adore God alone."
The Holy Father turned to Chapter 18 of 1 Kings for a
lesson on prayer drawn from the prophet. There, the
story of Elijah's face-off with the ministers of Baal is
recounted.
It is also, he continued, about the primary goal of prayer: conversion.
This is a confrontation, the Pope said, that in reality
"is between the Lord of Israel, the God of salvation
and of life, and a mute and empty idol that can do
nothing, neither good nor evil."
It is also a confrontation, he said, "between two
completely different ways of turning to God and ways
of prayer."
"Where God disappears, man falls into the slavery of idolatry, as the totalitarian
regimes of our own time have demonstrated, along with the various forms of nihilism
that make man dependent upon idols, upon idolatry -- they enslave him."
"The fire of God transforms our hearts and makes us capable of seeing God, of living
according to God and of living for the other."
Finally, it is a foreshadowing of the future, the fulfillment in Christ: "Here we see the
true fire of God: the love that leads the Lord all the way to the cross, to the total gift of
himself," the Pope noted.
"True adoration of God, then, is to give oneself to God and to men -- true adoration is
love," he reflected. "And true adoration of God does not destroy, but renews.
Certainly, the fire of God, the fire of love burns, transforms, purifies, but it is precisely
in this way that it does not destroy but rather creates the truth of our being, recreates
our hearts.
"And thus, truly alive by the grace of the fire of the Holy Spirit, of God's love, may we
be adorers in spirit and in truth."

Maronite politicians meet at Bkirki.
Patriarch al-Rahi:
“As Christians, we’re committed to the Bible’s
principles & the church."
Patriarch Beshara al-Rahi stressed the need for Christians to
improve their conditions in Lebanon, urging Maronite leaders
gathered in Bkirki to seek unity through commitment to the
Bible's teachings.
"We are here to evaluate our situation and try to improve it," alRahi told around 34 Maronite MPs as well as the country's top
Maronite political leaders meeting at the seat of the patriarchate
in Bkirki.
The patriarch called for the separation of religion from the state
and politics on the condition of holding onto the national
principles and the public welfare.
"As Christians, we're committed to the Bible's principles and the
church's teachings while practicing our political and economic
activities," he said in his opening speech.
"Unity among Christians won't be settled without this
commitment," al-Rahi added.
He said participation in state institutions and preservation of the
land guarantee the effective presence of Christians in the
country.

ABOUT OUR MARONITE PATRIARCH
Patriarch Mar Bechara Boutros al-Rahi (or Raï, Arabic: ‫ﻣﺎﺭ ﺑﺸﺎﺭﺓ‬
‫ﺑﻄﺮﺱ ﺍﻟﺮﺍﻋﻲ‬‎ Mār Bishārah Buṭrus al-Rāī ) (born 25 February 1940)
is the 77th Maronite Patriarch of Antioch, a position he has held
since 15 March 2011, succeeding Patriarch Cardinal Mar Nasrallah
Boutros Sfeir.
Bechara Boutros al-Rahi was born in Himlaya, Matn
District, Lebanon on 25 February 1940. He attended College
Notre-Dame de Jamhour, a Jesuit school in Lebanon. He
entered in the Mariamite Maronite Order on 31 July 1962
and was ordained as a priest on 3 September 1967. From
1967 to 1975 he has been responsible of the Arabic
language transmissions of Vatican Radio. In 1975 he was
awarded the Ph.D in canon and civil law. He also studied
for three years in the Lateran University in Rome.
He was consecrated as auxiliary bishop of Antioch on 12
July 1986, by Patriarch Nasrallah Boutros Sfeir and on 9
June 1990, he was appointed bishop of Byblos. In 2003 he
was elected Secretary of the Maronite Synod, and in 2009
he was appointed President of the Lebanese Episcopal
Commission for the Media. In 2007 he received the award
of the National Order of the Cedar.
At 71, he was elected Patriarch of the Maronites on 15 March 2011,
after getting more than two-thirds of the votes of the 39 bishops.
The Mass for the inauguration of his patriarchate took place on 25
March 2011, in Bkerké, the see of the Maronite Catholic
Patriarchate. As is customary for all Maronite patriarchs Rahi took
the additional name Boutros, that of Saint Peter, who briefly held
the see of Antioch before moving to Rome to become bishop there.
In April 2011 Patriarch Rai said that, for the sake of communion
and love, he would work "to establish a sincere and complete
dialogue" with Muslims "and build together a future in common life
and cooperation." Patriarch Rai said his predecessor "struggled with
insistence to free both the national decision-making and the land of
Lebanon from all forms of tutelage and occupation, worked for
reconciliation in Mount Lebanon and realized needed church
reforms. All of these constitute an extension of
the church started by the Second Vatican Council."

Gospel: Luke 10:21-24
"Jesus rejoiced in the Holy Spirit" —Luke 10:21
Jesus must have laughed frequently throughout His life
on earth, but we have no record of this in the Gospels.
Jesus may have been laughing when He exulted in the
Holy Spirit (Lk 10:21) after proclaiming that His
disciples' names were written in heaven (Lk 10:20). As
He rejoiced, He praised His Father for revealing to the
merest children what He had hidden from the learned
and the clever (Lk 10:21).
Jesus has a sense of humor different than most of us
have. We rejoice and laugh for many reasons but
usually not for names written in heaven and mysteries
concealed from some and revealed to others. We need to
"acquire a fresh, spiritual way of thinking" (Eph 4:23),
to take on the mind of Christ (1 Cor 2:16), and to have
His attitude (Phil 2:5). In so doing, we will laugh when
He laughs, rejoice when He rejoices, and cry when He
cries.
May each of us be able to say: "I have been crucified
with Christ, and the life I live now is not my own;
Christ is living in me" (Gal 2:19-20). When we sense
His presence in us, we will have His sense of humor.
Promise: "The Spirit of the Lord shall
rest upon Him: a Spirit of wisdom and of
understanding, a Spirit of counsel and of
strength, a Spirit of knowledge and of
fear of the Lord, and His delight shall be
the fear of the Lord." —Is 11:2-3
LET US PRAY:
Jesus, I believe that You are alive, everytime
You appear to us in the midst of our
community through the celebration of the
Eucharist. Make us worthy to celebrate Your
Holy Banquet. Open our minds to understand
the Scriptures. Amen.

FEAST OF CORPUS CHRISTI
(BODY & BLOOD OF JESUS CHRIST
The Feast of Corpus Christi, or the Feast of the Body
and Blood of Christ (as it is often called today), goes
back to the 13th century, but it celebrates something
far older: the institution of the Sacrament of Holy
Communion at the Last Supper. While Holy
Thursday is also a celebration of this mystery, the
solemn nature of Holy Week, and the focus on
Christ's Passion on Good Friday, overshadows that
aspect of Holy Thursday.
Thus, in 1246, Bishop Robert de Thorete of the
Belgina diocese of Liège, at the suggestion of St.
Juliana of Mont Cornillon (also in Belgium),
convened a synod and instituted the celebration of
the feast. From Liège, the celebration began to
spread, and, on September 8, 1264, Pope Urban IV
issued the papal bull "Transiturus," which established
the Feast of Corpus Christi as a universal feast of the
Church, to be celebrated on the Thursday following
Trinity Sunday.
At the request of Pope Urban IV, St. Thomas
Aquinas composed the office (the official prayers of
the Church) for the feast.

This office is widely considered one of the most
beautiful in the traditional Roman Breviary (the
official prayer book of the Divine Office or
Liturgy of the Hours), and it is the source of the
famous Eucharistic hymns "Pange Lingua
Gloriosi" and "Tantum Ergo Sacramentum."
For centuries after the celebration was extended to
the universal Church, the feast was also celebrated
with a eucharistic procession, in which the Sacred
Host was carried throughout the town,
accompanied by hymns and litanies. The faithful
would venerate the Body of Christ as the
procession passed by. In recent years, this practice
has almost disappeared, though some parishes still
hold a brief procession around the outside of the
parish church.

Martyrs at
Damascus

Francis, Abd el Moati and Rafael were brothers, who
lived in Damascus, Syria, in a devout Maronite family,
known for its piety, wealth, nobility, and compassion
towards the poor and the needy.
In the year 1860, when the Muslims in Damascus and
the Druze in Mount and South Lebanon attacked and
massacred the Christians, our martyrs, along with a
large crowd of Christians, took refuge in the
Franciscan monastery in Damascus, after the Muslims
had set the fire in the Christian neighborhood. In the
monastery they were praying and celebrating the
mysteries of forgiveness (confession) and Eucharist for
the last time.
While Francis stayed alone in the Church, kneeling
down before the statue of Our Lady of Sorrow and
praying, he was filled with hope. After midnight a
band of armed Muslim rioters broke into the
monastery. Christians were terrified and confused,
some managed to run away, and others hid themselves.
The rioters shouted: “where is Francis Massabki? We
are after him”. At that Francis approached them
audaciously, saying: “I am Francis Massabki, how can
I help you?” They told him, that we have come to save
you and your family, under one condition, that you
become Muslims, or we will kill you all. He answered
them: “We are Christians and faithful to Christ we live
and die. We do not fear those who can kill the body, as
the Lord Jesus said.”
Then, he looked at his brothers and said to them: “have
courage and stand firm in your faith, because the
crown of victory is already ready in heaven for those
who persevere till the end.” At that his two brothers
confessed publicly their faith in the Lord Jesus saying:
“We are Christians, and we want to live and die as
Christians.” Thus their persecutors attacked them,
beating them with their sticks, knives and axes. In this
manner they were killed, preferring death over denying
their faith in Christ, who crowned them as martyrs.
That happened in July 10th in the year 1860. His
holiness Pope Pius XI had declared them blessed in
October 10th, 1926, thanks to the efforts of bishop
Bechara Al’Shemali, the Maronite Archbishop of 9
Damascus. May their prayers be with us. Amen.
Saint Elias the Prophet
Feast Day: 20th of July
Since the early days of the Christian Church, saints have
played a key role as intercessors between God and mankind.
Saints serve as a source of protection, aid, and miraculous
intervention. Today, new saints are recognized by the Church
because they have demonstrated their Christian faith at the
highest levels throughout their lives and have died in its cause.
Saint Elias, also known as Elijah, was a famous Israelite
prophet born in Gilead in the eighth century B.C. The events
of Elijah's life are related in the Bible, 1 Kings, chapters 1719. Focal points, some of which are recounted in this article,
demonstrate his unique role in biblical history.
His father saw angels around him as a child, dressing and
feeding him with fire. When God appeared to Elijah it was in
the form of fire similar to His appearance to Moses. Elijah
performed miracles such as providing sustaining food during a
time of limited resources to the widow who gave him shelter.
Her son later died, and Elijah brought him back to life. Elijah
opposed King Ahab and his wife Jezebel, who had allowed the
pagan temple of Baal to be built.
“He who believes in the Son is not
condemned, but he who does not believe is
condemned already because he has not
believed in the Name of the only begotten

This temple and its false
prophets turned many
people from God. Elias
prayed to God to prevent
rain from falling for three
years to six months. He
challenged the prophets
of Baal to call down fire
from their god. When
they failed, he prayed to
God and to kill the false
prophets of Baal. Elijah
then called down the
rains. Elijah prophesied
that dogs would lick up
Ahab's blood and eat his
wife
Jezebel.
His
prophecies
became
reality. Like Moses,
Elijah also talked with
God on Sinai and parted
the Jordan River with his
mantel.
St. Elias reviving
the son of a widow
Elijah was taken up to heaven in a fiery chariot. He is
pictorially depicted in two different manners, either with a
fiery chariot ascending into heaven or with a fiery sword
killing the pagans and challenging the false prophets of
Baal. Elijah is also mentioned in the New Testament at the
Transfiguration of Jesus along with Moses, as depicted in
the mural behind the altar at St. Elias

Saint Charbel Makhlouf

Who is Saint Charbel
Makhlouf?
He was raised in a very devout family
which fostered piety and love for God.
He was a prayerful youth who from his
early years learned to detach himself
from worldly vanities. He enjoyed his
solitude which he used to pray and
think about God.
When he was twenty-three years old he
decided to leave home to discover his
religious vocation as a monk and
hermit.
The Lebanese Maronite Order was
founded in Lebanon in 1695 and
approved by Pope Clement XII in 1732.
He was born May 8, 1828 in
the little village of BiqaKafra which is situated in the
high mountains of northern
Lebanon. His parents were
poor and he was the last of
five children. He was
baptised with the name of
"Joseph".
He went to the Monastery of Our Lady of Mayfouk at the north of
Jebeil. He stayed there for some time until he was transferred to the
Monastery of Saint Maroun at Annaya of the Lebanese Maronite
Order. He continued his Novitiate until 1853 when he vowed
himself to Poverty, Chastity and Obedience, and choosing the name
"Charbel". His vocation was soon to be tested by trial. There were
some persons who felt that he did not have a vocation. His mother
and certain members of his family decided that he should return
home to his family. They begged him to leave the Monastery -- but

he refused firmly and persevered in his vocation.

Saint Charbel professed his solemn monastic vows. His
Superiors decided to send him to the Monastery of Kfifan.
He continued to study theological subjects. He was ordained
a priest in 1859. After his ordination he was sent back to the
Monastery of Saint Maroun in Annaya. Already he was
known for his humility and fidelity to his duty. He lived the
virtues like an Angel and was heroic through his perfect
obedience, poverty and chastity.
He spent the next sixteen years of his priestly life at Saint
Maroun's. His Superiors discerned that he had the vocation
to live the life of a hermit which he so ardently desired. His
mortification and self-denial were an edification to all.
Consequently, in 1875 Saint Charbel moved into the
hermitage of St. Peter and St. Paul located on the property
of the Monastery about one mile away.
Saint Charbel had the vocation from God to live his
religious life as a hermit. The purpose of religious life is the
sanctification of one's soul through faith, hope and charity.
It is no different for the hermit. The means are prayer,
manual work, fasting, and detachment from oneself. All of
this to an heroic degree. For twenty-three years, Saint
Charbel lived the life of a hermit until he died on December
24, 1898.
Devotion to the Holy Eucharist and to the Mother of God
Saint Charbel was a priest for 39 years during which he celebrated the Holy Mass every day. He took
a long time to prepare for Holy Mass; and afterwards he remained in thanksgiving for as long as two
hours.

The Our Father Prayer
We can establish a parallelism between
the 'Our Father' and a great many of
our Lord's gestures and words, thereby
showing how the Our Father expresses
the basic sentiments of all prayer. Note
the following similarities:
FATHER: Matthew ll:25-26: I praise you,
Father, Lord of Heaven and earth. ...John 17: 45: I glorified you on earth.

world, but that you preserve them from evil.
OUR LADY OF MEDJUGORIE
It was late afternoon on June 24, 1981. Two teen-age girls were
out for a walk, no doubt sharing the latest news or talking about
a young man or two.
Fifteen-year-old Ivanka Ivankovic, from the hamlet of
Bijakovici (part of the parish of Medjugorje in what was then
Yugoslavia) suddenly noticed a light high up on Mount
Podbrdo, the large hill behind her village. Glancing up, she saw
a figure shining with light, hovering above the ground. It stood
a good distance away, perhaps over 200 yards. As she looked,
speechless, their conversation forgotten, the figure seemed to
form the shape of a young woman. Although she wasn’t at all
sure, she exclaimed to her friend, “Mirjana, look. There is
Gospa.” (Gospa is the Croatian word for Our Lady.) Mirjana
was sure Ivanka was joking. She didn’t even bother to look
where her friend was pointing. “Come on,” she said
mockingly, “Would Our Lady appear to us?”
Convinced, Ivanka said no more and they walked on. A younger
girl, Milka Pavlovic, asked for help rounding up her goats.
Arriving back at the spot, all three now saw the figure. This
time they knelt down. Vicka Ivankovic, another friend,
happened by. “Look up there,” they told her. Terrified, Vicka
kicked off her shoes and ran. She met sixteen-year-old Ivan
Dragicevic and his friend Ivan Ivankovic. Telling them what
happened, they convinced her to take them to check it out.
They, too, saw the vision. Ivan Dragicevic took off on a dead
run for home.
The next day, four of the children felt drawn back to the spot.
Vicka then ran to get her friend, Marija (Milka’s sister) and tenyear-old Jakov Colo. They, too, saw the apparition the second
day. Milka and Ivan Ivankovic did not return that day and never
saw Our Lady again.

In frightful awe, the children asked the Lady who she was and why she had
come to them. She replied, “Dear children, I am the Blessed Virgin Mary…I
am your Mother, the Queen of Peace…I love you…I come on a mission
from God the Father…God has chosen each one of you to use you in a great
plan for the salvation of mankind. I wish to be with you to reconcile the
world through prayer, fasting, faith, conversion and peace.”
The Gospa has appeared every day since then, teaching them to live holy lives
and asking her “dear children” to relate her messages to the world.
The visionaries say Our Lady looks about nineteen years old, is extremely
beautiful with dark hair and blue eyes; wears a silvery gray gown, white veil
and crown of stars. She appears in a glowing light, floating on a cloud and
often accompanied by angels. They say it is impossible to truly describe her
beauty; there is nothing so beautiful here on earth.
The visionaries accept their mission from Our Lady to avidly pray and fast and
to relate her messages to the world. They meet daily with pilgrims in
Medjugorje and in foreign lands, to relate her impassioned

know the love of God, if you were to look into your hearts you would
comprehend that I am speaking about many of you. With an open
heart, sincerely ask yourselves if you want the living God or do you
want to eliminate Him and live as you want. Look around you, my
children, and see where the world is going, the world that thinks of
doing everything without the Father, and which wanders in the
darkness of temptation. I am offering to you the light of the Truth and
the Holy Spirit. According to God's plan I am with you to help you to
have my Son, His Cross and Resurrection, triumph in your hearts. As a
mother, I desire and pray for your unity with my Son and His works. I

Our Lady has given ten secrets concerning the world to visionaries
Mirjana, Ivanka and Jakov.
Since receiving all ten secrets, Mirjana now has an apparition of the
Gospa only on the 2nd of each month and on her birthday, March
18. Ivanka sees her only on the Anniversary Date, June 25. Jakov
sees her only on December 25 when she also brings the Christ Child
with
her.
The Gospa has chosen Mirjana to reveal the secrets through the
Franciscan Father Petar Ljubicic, ten days before each one will
occur. After praying and fasting, Father will tell the secret to the
world three days before it happens. Our Lady also promised that a
lasting sign would be left at the spot of her first apparition in
Medjugorje.
Only nine secrets have been given to visionaries Ivan, Marija and
Vicka. They each continue to have an apparition of the Gospa daily.
On the 25th of each month, Our Lady gives visionary Marija a
message for the world. Because all the visionaries remain
connected to St. James Church in Medjugorje, Maria writes down
the message for the priest at St. James to translate and relate to the
world.

The Miracle of Our Lady’s reported appearances in
Medjugorje have brought to this tiny village, more than
twenty-five million pilgrims of all denominations
including cardinals, bishops, priests, nuns, ministers and
rabbis. All have been moved by the Gospa’s motherly
love in continuing to appear daily and to offer hope and
peace to her children in this deeply troubled world.
Our Lady’s messages are meant to be heard not once, but
repeatedly, because the world is giving a message that
contradicts the truth of the Gospel. The Gospel is not the
false reality of selfish egoism, but the true reality of selfsacrifice and living for God. “I invite you to decide again
to love God above all else. In this time, when due to the
spirit of consumerism, one forgets what it means to love
and to cherish true values, I invite you again, little
children, to put God in the first place in your life. Do not
let satan attract you through material things, but little
children, decide for God who is freedom and love.”

for a Change
Jason Dagher competed at the 2011 National History Day
and won first place within his category in individual
exhibits. It was concerning the war in Lebanon.
Joseph Dagher went and competed at the Regional Science and Engineering Fair at the
University of Nevada, Las Vegas. His project was on the Therapeutic Effects of
Exercise on Parkinson's disease. He competed against other schools from Southern
Nevada and achieved first place and won the whole science fair here at UNLV. Then,
he was sent to an International Science and Engineering Fair in Los Angeles,
California where over 65 countries were competing against one another.

Attire at the Holy Mass
People have no problem, it seems, dressing for weddings, funerals, office parties, or dates -- but seem
to think that dressing to meet Almighty God at the Mass is passé. But dressing for Mass is simply a
matter of showing proper respect, not only for God, but for others around you. It's certainly not a
matter of showing off one's finery -- lots of people don't even have fine clothes. Certainly, too, some
people may attend certain Masses -- say the 5:30 PM Masses -- on their way home from their
construction jobs. Fine! There is nothing to worry about in these things! Never let circumstances out of
your control make you feel embarrassed or keep you away from the Sacraments! But one should
always wear clothes that are modest, and, if possible, all things being equal, clean and the nicest
clothes one has.
Below are some guidelines for proper attire (which
also apply for other liturgies, such as Eucharistic
Adoration or the Divine Office, etc.):
1. Shorts & Sweats: Just say no.
2. Blue Jeans: Nice blue jeans can be "OK" (but
just OK), especially if dressed up, but are not ideal.
But if jeans are all you have, by golly, wear jeans!
3. Ties and Jackets: Typical for men and
considered the mark of the "well-dressed" in the
West. If you have no suit or jacket, then come in
the best you have, if possible.

4. Head Coverings: Laymen never wear hats in churches
(except for rare ceremonial reasons on the part of some
confraternities and lay associations). On the other hand,
women do cover their heads and have from the very first
day of the Church. Some parishes and chapels will have
veils available for women who don't have one.
5. Special to Women: Like men, women should wear their
"Sunday best," which in the West is typically considered
to be a dress or skirt. Hemlines should cover the knees
when standing and sitting, shoulders should be covered
(i.e., "tank top" dresses and spaghetti straps are not
kosher), and necklines should be modest. If you have no
dress or skirt, then wear the best outfit you have, if
possible. Just a note on lipstick: if you wear some, be sure
to blot really well before kissing icons, statues, the priest's
hands, etc. ("Oprah 'Girlfriend' Tip": get the kind that
doesn't "kiss off" or smudge...)
