TRI ELEMENTARY SCHOOL’S STUDENT NEWSPAPER
Guess Who? Teacher of the Issue
by Adrianna Bowers
by Bayleigh Appleby
Mrs. Powers... what a wonderful teacher. She
has been teaching for eight years. Mrs. Powers
worked as an aide at Spiceland Elementary
when she realized she would like to be teacher.
Her favorite event is the Wax Museum. What
she likes to see is students making progress and
being successful. Mrs. Powers is a great teacher!
So when you see Mrs. Powers in the hallway be
sure to say hi or wave.
Guess who this is! She has two dogs, two
cats, and one turtle. Wow! That's a lot of
pets! She drives a gray car. She has two
daughters, but no sons. She has curly hair.
She is a teacher's aide. She is obviously a
girl. She has a husband named Troy. Read
on page 2 to find out who our Guess Who?
person is.
Summer Activities
by Hannah McKellar
I know some cool things students did this past summer. Here are just a few things students
did. Brittany West went to Notre Dame and got to go on a tour and saw the Golden Dome.
Instead of going somewhere, Abigail Risselman just relaxed and swam this summer. Jessica
Vandiver went to a friend’s house and spent time there. A few students like Auburn Harvey,
Ella Chew, and Caitlyn Craig did 4-H. What did you do over the summer?
STUDENTS OF
Stella Houchins
by Hannah McKellar
This month’s Student of the Issue is Stella Houchins in
first grade in Mrs. Hansen’s class. Stella’s favorite color
is blue and her best friend is Ben. Her favorite thing to
do is to climb. Stella likes music class at school. She likes
to read the book, Biscuit. Stella’s favorite food is
grapes. If you see Stella in the hallway wave hi!

Guess Who?
If you guessed the Guess Who? person is Mrs. Branham, you are
correct. She is a teacher’s aide in Mrs. Powers’ room and helps out at
lunch. Well, my opinion is that she is a great teacher's aide at Tri
Elementary School.
Rumor Has It
by Maddy Abrams
Rumor in the halls of Tri Elementary is that we will be going to school year round next year. For those of you
who do not know what this means here you go; schools that operate year round but does not increase the
number of day’s children must go. If we do go year round it will be very different from the past years.
The most popular year round plan school plan is the 45-15. It means students will go to school 45 days and
then get 15 days off. The usual holidays and breaks would be incorporated into this plan (Melissa Kelly,
About.com). One of the most popular arguments for year round school is, a shorter summer break gives students
less time to forget what they have learned. The downside to year round schooling is, after having 3 weeks off
teachers will have to get students back into the swing of things and do review work after each break.
“Adults may not enjoy summer break as much as kids do, but for kids it is a time to have fun” stated Lauren
Bouslog after being asked her opinion on Year Round school. “I don’t think it is a good idea because the
number of weeks for summer break will be shorter and more difficult for family vacations” Halle Chandler said
of Year Round school.
After speaking with Mr. Thackery the answer you have all been waiting for is… next year students at Tri
Elementary will probably be going to school year round! Mr. Thackery thinks it’s a good idea we will be going
to school year round next year. In my opinion, I disagree. Mr. Thackery says he’s heard a lot of good things
about it.
Budget Cuts
by Mr. Jeffries, Titan Times Coordinator
We’re off to a great start at Tri Elementary, but like most schools and businesses, we’ve faced many
budget cuts. Those budget cuts have also hit Titan Times. This year, the number of students selected for
Titan Times has been reduced from 25 students to 15 students. This will obviously reduce the number of
articles and pages you’ll see in each issue.
Along with the reduction of students, we have also gotten advertisements for the newspaper. These
sponsors have provided enough money to allow Titan Times to stay in production.
The Titan Times Staff would like to thank everyone who is sponsoring us this year. We could not have
continued Titan Times this year without your generous support.
If your family or business would like to sponsor Titan Times this year, please contact Mr. Jeffries by
calling 765-987-7090 (school phone) or via email at [email protected].

Movie Review ~ Kit Kittredge
by Madison Penkal
Kit Kittredge is a movie about a young girl & she & her friends have a clubhouse in her yard (Kit’s), she
& her friends every day after school they will go up in the clubhouse. One day they were in the clubhouse
& they heard one of the girl’s mom crying. The bank took their house. The mortgage on their house was
about to foreclose because her father lost his job. He found a job in Chicago and he had to leave for a
while. So while he was gone they took in borders. They were Mr. Berk, the magician, Ms. Dooly, the
dance teacher, and Miss Bond, the driver of the mobile library. They have heard about hobos robbing and
mugging. Also, Kit loves to write. Kit meets two of the hobos which are Will and Countee. They live in a
hobo jungle. If you would like to hear more about this movie you can rent it.
Mmm Mmm Good
by Kassidy Winkhart
For this month's article I chose to do Taste Testers. I wanted to have my class do the taste
tester, and I did it on M&M's. I brought three different kinds of M&M's which were, original,
peanut butter, and coconut. I gave each person in my class a few of each kind of M&M's, and
after they were done eating them I asked my class which they liked the best, which was peanut
butter. Then coconut was second, and original was the least favorite. Try these three delicious
types of M&M's, and see which ones you like.

Walter the Farting Dog
Lower Elementary Book Review
by Madison Penkal
Betty and Billy are two children who one
day went to the pound and brought home a
dog. The mom said that if you want to keep
him you will have to give him a bath. After
they gave him the bath he wouldn’t quit
farting. They thought he was just nervous.
But he wasn’t. Everywhere he went he
farted. So their father said, “He farts
morning, noon, and night he goes in the
morning.” They took him to the vet. If you
would like to know what happens next you
can check out this book at your local
library.

Pet of the Are Shih Tzu’s the
Breed for You?
Issue
by Makenna Hawk
by Makayla Campbell
Taylor Baker has a dog named
Diamond. Diamond is a female
beagle. She is almost a year
old. She can fetch and sit. She
is a hunting dog. She likes to
knock her bowl over. She loves
kids. Diamond loves treats.
Taylor has had her for eight
months. She likes to run with
people.
The Shih Tzu has become a popular breed of dogs in
recent years and one ranked in the top ten breeds in
the US according to the American Kennel Club. The
name Shih Tzu (pronounced sheet zoo) means “lion”
in Chinese. Some good things about the Shih Tzu are
they are small, friendly, don’t shed much and love to
be near their owners. Some bad things about the Shih
Tzu are that they can be stubborn, a little hard to
train, and require a lot of grooming. I don’t know
about you, but I think Shih Tzu’s are terrific. I love my
Shih Tzu named Sophie (pictured on the right) and she
goes everywhere I do…except school of course.
College of the Issue ~ Boise State
by Mason Rottinghaus
This month's College of the Issue is Boise State. Boise State is located in Boise,
Idaho. Boise State University was founded in 1932 as Boise Junior College by the
Episcopal Church. Its founding president was Middleton Barwell, bishop of the
Episcopal Diocese of Idaho. After two years the school became independent, and,
in 1940, moved from St. Margaret's Hall to its present site along the south bank
of the Boise River between Capitol Boulevard and Broadway Avenue. Boise
State's teams are the Bronco's. Boise State offers 201 degrees in 190 fields of
study and has more than 100 graduate programs, including the MBA and MAcc
programs in the College of Business and Economics. The university's athletic
teams, the Broncos, participate in NCAA Division 1 athletics (FBS for football).
The Boise State football team has garnered national attention in recent years for
winning the 2007 and 2010 Fiesta Bowls, and for finishing four of the last five
seasons ranked among the top ten teams in the national BCS rankings.
