is how we roll.
But if you live in some areas of Kansas City’s urban core, a fresh
tomato or an ear of corn can be hard to come by. That’s why TMC
created two ways to offer fresh produce at affordable prices: the
Healthy Harvest Produce Market, which happens weekly spring
through fall at TMC Hospital Hill, and the Healthy Harvest
Mobile Market, a produce market on wheels, which makes
scheduled stops in communities around KC where healthy foods
are less accessible. Visit trumed.org to learn more.

A who’s who in Kansas City’s funding community attended
an open house event at the new Richard and Annette Bloch
Cancer Center at TMC in May. Many of TMC’s loyal and
generous funding partners toured the beautiful facility,
including Annette Bloch and
her family. The expanded
center, located in Hospital Hill
Center, is triple the size of the
former unit in the main hospital.
Philanthropic gifts of more
than $6 million funded the new
facility, oncology equipment and
patient programs.

“I’m out of adjectives,” Annette Bloch said, as she surveyed
the space. “It’s great for patient dignity, great for patient care
and great for the dedicated staff.”
The Center offers the latest in
equipment and technology to
help fight the disease. Designed
to maximize patient comfort and
convenience, the Center includes:
• Private and semi-private
infusion bays – for receiving
treatment
• Resource Area – with printed
materials and computer access to
research your diagnosis
From its sweeping view to its
private infusion suites, the new
center drew raves from all in
attendance.
• Social Worker – to assist with
home care needs and planning
• Financial Resource Counselor –
to work with each patient to access
payment sources that best serve you

says he’s still in awe everytime he sees the new facility.
Holcom, a two-time cancer survivor, said he has been treated
at well-known facilities and they don’t compare to the one at
TMC.
“You have a first-class oncology center at Truman Medical
Centers,” he said.
• Clinical Psychologist - to schedule appointments for those
wanting help with stress relief techniques and other aspects of
coping
• Appearance boutique – where patients are assisted in finding
a wig or prosthetic to fit their personal needs.

To the Employees of Truman Medical Centers:
Innovative
In the summer of 1999 a newly assembled Leadership Team assumed the reins of Truman
Medical Centers. Over the course of sixty days, a full assessment of the institution was made by
meeting with and listening to more than 2,700 employees on what was needed to make TMC a
competitive player in the marketplace.
The desired and agreed upon attributes included the following:
• Become a customer-oriented organization commensurate with ”Service Excellence” and good
“clinical outcomes”
• Improve enterprise-wide communication, and emphasize clarity of mission, goals and strategies
• Become an innovative, creative environment with our employees and community partners and
have high expectations for results
• Improve our curbside appeal, both externally and internally by creating a clean aesthetically please
environment
Action-oriented
Determined
Well, in the summer of 2014 we stand here collectively as staff, physicians and our Board of
Directors in a much better place. Being designated by University Hospital Consortium as one
of the top 5 Academic Medical Centers in the Country was clearly our high water mark in
2005. Another milestone was achieving 75% support from the voters of Kansas City in our last
Health Levy Campaign. But reaching high levels of information technology implementation and
receiving a major competitive $4,500,000 CMS grant for chronic disease management is just as
impressive. New construction of our emergency room(s) and our Cardiology, Gastrointestinal
and Diabetes Clinics have been impactful. The new Healing Canvas Behavioral Health Building,
recently opened Oncology Center and the renovated Lakewood Campus represent only a
percentage of the $500,000,000 of capital improvements we have invested.
“Thinking outside the bed”

Better. For Everyone.
The industry wide innovations include our Corporate Academy, Healthy Harvest Market, and
Healing Arts programs are noteworthy and recognized nationally.
Our journey together occurred against the backdrop of one of the most challenging socioeconomic periods in our Nation’s history. Yet we were able to remain steadfast in our
commitment to serving the needs of the Kansas City Community.
In summary, I feel good about the positive impact we have made on our hospital(s) and the
communities we serve. We are “Better. For Everyone.”
I thank all of you for your loyalty and dedication to our mission. As I often say, “we work hard
and do hard work.”
Mentor
I wish you much continued success, just remember, “Everything Matters.”
Sincerely,
John W. Bluford

at recognizing and empowering physicians and
staff resulting in TMC Lakewood consistently being
recognized for both its growth and clinical quality.
“I am honored by the confidence shown in me,” Shields
said. "TMC is a valuable community asset, a great place
to work and most important, a great place to receive
care. We have a tremendously talented medical staff,

In a beautiful Nurses Week awards ceremony, TMC
nurses were honored for their successes. And in a special
presentation, one of TMC’s longtime nursing leaders was
surprised with an award of her own.
Lakewood COO Charlie Shields opened the event with
the keynote lauding TMC nurse for their dedication and
compassion.
“Whenever I talk to someone about their stay in the
hospital, they never talk about the equipment or the
physical space,” he said. “It’s always about how well they
were treated. And our nurses are an integral part of
that.”
Lynette Wheeler, TMC Chief Nursing Officer, said a staff
nurse came to her with the idea of honoring someone
who had mentored her. She rallied her fellow nurses and
raised enough funds to endow an award.
Beginning next year, the Carol Evrard Award for
Mentoring and Leadership will be awarded to a nurse
for his or her leadership potential. Evrard, Senior
Director Nursing Practice, has worked at TMC for more
than 15 years.
The announcement capped an evening of stellar
achievement for TMC’s nursing staff. (See list at right.)

community agencies that support the job search effort. The partnering agencies include
Truman Employment Services, Missouri Department of Vocational Rehabilitation, and the
Kansas City Regional Office of the Missouri Division of Developmental Disabilities. The
program is dedicated to workforce development that benefits the individual, community and
workplace. The ultimate goal is competitive employment for the students.
In addition, scholarship

Truman Medical Center Lakewood has teamed with the Independence School District to give
students in their final year of high school an opportunity to learn valuable job skills through
hands-on work experience in a Project SEARCH program.

“Lakewood’s partnership with
the Independence School
District continues to grow
and produce great outcomes
for the community. Project

in that we can have such a
positive influence in training
and readying students for

Charlie Shields
Chief Operating Officer

Students interested in Project SEARCH underwent a rigorous interview process to gain
acceptance to the program. They then had to meet all requirements that TMC employees
meet to secure a position. Through this process, students learned what they must do to gain
competitive employment, from interviewing to resum development. Once accepted, the
students spent their senior year on-site at TMC Lakewood.
During the 2013-2014 school year, six students participated in three 10-week internships
to explore different career fields. The students worked in several departments including
Rehabilitation Services, Sterile Supply, Labor and Delivery, the Auxiliary Gift Shops, Dietary
Services and Environmental Services.
We had two Project SEARCH students and it was wonderful to see them flourish and come
out of their shell. Both of our interns completed the tasks with competency and proficiency.
It was a pleasure to work with them,” said Vicki Ross, Director of Rehabilitation Services at
TMC Lakewood.
The Independence School District provided an on-site special education teacher to work with
the students on job readiness and independent living skills.
Program organizers say the students displayed and understood the importance of following
directions, being on time and working as a member of a team.
“We have had a very successful year with three out of the six interns already placed in
competitive employment,” said Barbara Warner, program director for employment services
at TMC Behavioral Health. “We look forward to continuing this program and have already
selected 6 candidates for next school year.”
