MISS STAMOUDIS’ News SEPTEMBER 20, 2013 Reading Thank You! Thank you for coming to Curriculum Night! It was wonderful to see some of you again and meet some of you for the first time. I enjoyed speaking to you about our class rules, class expectations, and the second grade curriculum. For those who were not able to make it, we missed you. Please refer to the packet I sent home with your child which includes the information you missed. In Reading we have been reviewing various Reading Strategies we will use to help us be successful readers. The Reading Strategies are: Predict/Infer, Phonics/ Decoding, Monitor/Clarify, Questioning, Evaluating, and Summarizing. We listened to and read various stories using the strategies to help. We will continue to review these in depth, as the year progresses. Last week we begin Theme 1 of our Houghton Mifflin Reading Series. The first story we read was titled, Dragon Gets By. We learned some new vocabulary words to go with our story and focused on summarizing and comprehension skills. We also listened to a story titled, Seven Sillies. It was a funny story about some silly animals that have trouble counting. We also worked on the following skills and activities: story structure, base words and -s, -ed, and -ing endings, reading a chart, the short i and a sounds, homophones, and grammar skills. We have already started our Guided Reading Groups. While I am meeting with one group, the other groups will work on various Language Arts activities. Math In Math we continue to work on Unit 2. We are practicing addition up to 1,000 with and without regrouping. Please help your child with their homework if they need it. We will start our Math Facts practice soon! Science We have been learning about objects in the sky, specifically the Sun, Moon, and Stars. We have enjoyed observing the position and reappearance of the Moon and Sun during the day. Be sure to help your child at home with their Moon Journals. In the next couple weeks we will construct constellation models from star patterns and read simple star maps in class to become familiar with positions and appearance of the stars. Second Step For the past couple weeks we have been talking about listening skills and following directions. We review these skills daily. Writing Workshop We have been writing daily. Our focus is Narrative Writing. We are writing short stories about what we know how to do and things we know about. Important Dates and Reminders Lots of Fun in 2nd Grade We have been very busy! To the right is a picture of your child doing one of the following: reading sight words, making a portfolio cover, reading books together, playing a math game, doing their job, or standing in line. *Tuesday, Sept., 24th - Field TripThe Grove 8:50 am to 11:30 am *Monday, October 14th - No School due to Columbus Day *Thursday, Oct., 10th - Evening Parent/Teacher Conferences *Thursday, Oct., 17th - Evening Parent/Teacher Conferences
