Northwest ENERGY STAR Homes Ventilation Presentation Portland, OR | April 11, 2013 ASHRAE 62.2 VERIFICATION THERE IS A MANDATE TO INSPECT & TEST Necessary ducting for existing fans must be properly installed to bring air into or out of the dwelling. Fan controls, like the one shown at right, must be installed to insure proper run times. Slide content from ASHRAE 62.2 for WAP.DOE WHY IS MEASURING AIRFLOW SO HARD? It’s invisible! Air flow in a duct is usually really turbulent; where you sense the airflow might not the right place 30 FEET OFF THE GROUND IS NOT A GOOD PLACE TO MEASURE AIRFLOW! If you can’t measure it, how is anyone going to clean it? BASIC MATH Velocity (FPM) X Area (Sq..)= CFM Ways to detect velocity o Hot Wire anemometer o Pitot Tube o Vane anemometer HOT WIRE ANEMOMETER VANE ANEMOMETER EFFECTIVE AREA: AK: CORE AREA, OR ALL SORT OF THE SAME SPECIFICATION Gross area = 24 sq inches or 24/144= .17 Sq. Ft Effective area is only .102 Sq Ft. VANE ANEMOMETER WITH HOOD FLOW HOODS DO THE MATH FOR YOU They still detect velocity by: o Hot wire anometers o Pitot tubes o Propellers They also know the area PRESSURE DROP BETWEEN TWO PLACES IN A DUCT Mass flow in air can be calculated if you know the pressure drop across the pipe. Then it can be calculated using Darcy's Equation for Pressure, which is: P2-P1 = (4fLv*v)/d*2*g where, P2 & P1 are pressures at two points in pipe, f = friction factor, L= length of pipe, v = velocity of fluid, d = diameter of pipe, g = gravity. On the “Blower Side” of the R/A filter 2. On the “Blower Side” AC Coil (if installed) If only 1 SP probe, add the 2 values together Measurements close to design value, usually 0.5” W.C, indicate good duct design if the blower speed is set correctly. WHAT'S WRONG HERE? SUPPLY SIDE VENTILATION These systems are designed to bring in air through a duct to the outside. When operating, they turn on the air handler, open a damper in the duct to outside. In some cases, they may turn on a remote fan. In almost all cases, they track fan time for heating and cooling and activate only when extra run time is needed to meet a ventilation standard. CONTROLLERS Two basic types: 1. Non-programmable (you do the math) o April Aire o Clock timers (supply side systems must use air handlers with EM if these systems are used) 2. Programmable (they do the math) o Smart thermostats o Honeywell W1850 o Tamarack fan controllers APRILAIRE CONTROLLER Does not keep track of air handler run time; must be used in connection with ECM air handler SET ENVIRONMENTAL OPERATING CONDITIONS These last two terminals must have either an outdoor temp sensor, or the blue “time only resistor”. They can also be connected with a jumper wire. If nothing connects the two terminals, the controller will not operate. FAN OFF will flash on the display. As above, set the number of minutes between 1 and 199. Press the Mode key one last time to return to normal operation or for the FR-V model, proceed to VENT settings. Note: In humid climates, the FAN OFF time should be at least 6 minutes. This avoids moisture re-evaporation from the coil and condensation in cold supply ducts. SETTING THE VENT TIMES Press the MODE key until VENT ON flashes Increase or decrease the number of minutes to open the outside air damper when the fan is on Press MODE again, VENT OFF will flash Increase or decrease the number of minutes to close the damper after the VENT ON time as elapsed THE HONEYWELL WHOLE HOUSE VENTILATION CONTROLLER W8150 DOES THE MATH! THIS CONTROLLER WILL CALCULATE FAN RUN TIME NEED TO MEET VARIOUS VENTILATION REQUIREMENTS SET VENTILATION STANDARD To meet ASHRAE 62.2 the upper dip switch must be moved to the right and the lower dip switch to the left FRONT SWITCH ON: The controller will operate the system as programed OVERIDE: Will turn the system on regardless of programing OFF: Will not turn air handler on, will not open damper, it will turn on a remote exhaust fan SET BEDROOM, AREA AND MEASURED FLOW RATE ON THE THREE BOTTOM DIALS COMPLIANCE INDICATOR LIGHTS o Flashing Green light indicates compliance with chosen standard o Flashing Red indicates non-compliance with chosen standard PROGRAMMABLE EXHAUST FANS Strong ECM fans Efficient motors, less than 10 watts Designed to run continually Quiet, less than one sone CFM SELECTION The time switch only refers to the length of time the fan runs when a high demand for ventilation is detected, either through a motion sensor or a manual call SELECTION DIALS FAN CONTROLLERS Airetrack TM by Tamarack Adjustable airflow o 40 to 100% of fan capacity in o 16 increments Built in timer o 5 minute increments Boost o 20 minutes on full HONEYWELL TRUEIAQ INSTALLER SETUP FOR HONEYWELL TRUEIAQ PANASONIC SPOT ERV, “WHISPER GREEN” CFM SETTINGS (AT .10 WC) Speed Exhaust (cfm) Supply (cfm Watts High 40 30 24 Low 20 20 21 Speed Exhaust (cfm) Supply (cfm Watts 20 20 20 21 20 10 10 17 HONEYWELL VISION PRO IAQ HOW TO ENTER INSTALLER SET UP SCREEN VISION PRO VENTILATION SETTINGS ADDING SYSTEMS TOGETHER Two exhaust fan can be added together An exhaust and an ERV/HRV can be added together Exhaust and supply systems can not be added together I INTEND TO FILL THESE OUT ONCE THE FINALS ARE DONE I INTEND TO FILL THESE OUT ONCE THE FINALS ARE DONE I INTEND TO FILL THESE OUT ONCE THE FINALS ARE DONE THANK YOU!
