Maróti Defence Expected: Spring 2015 Project website www.computr.eu Research Topic Disruption Management in Public Transport: the usage of new available data on passenger behavior for reducing delay of passengers by specifically including the complex interaction between passenger behavior and the logistic operations. The research focusses on (i) analyzing and modeling passenger behavior based on Big Data (e.g. obtained through automatic ticketing services), (ii) developing new mathematical models for disruption management including realistic passenger behavior and the interaction between logistic planning and passenger behavior. To this end, combinatorial optimization (mixed integer programming, column generation, robust optimization), statistics, data mining and agent based simulation are used. Studies are based on real life data and real life cases of Netherlands Railways and the Massachusetts Bay Authority for Transportation (Boston, USA). This project is sponsored by a highly competitive grant of the Netherlands Science Foundation (NWO) as part of their Complexity program and carried out in cooperation with the Department of Process Quality and Innovation of Netherlands Railways. Research Interests The application, development and extension of Operations Research techniques in order to solve increasingly complex real world problems. Specifically, in the area of mathematical programming, network optimization, column generation and multi-commodity flow models, with the intention to include realistic behavior of travelers in these models. Currently, with the application to (public) transport networks and disruption management, but links could be found with health care logistic and planning, logistic scheduling and supply chain management. Finally, combining this with the usage of real world (big) data sources, requiring statistical, econometric and data mining techniques, preferably in a dynamic research environment with great opportunities for collaborations with researchers and practice. Research focussed on the real life problem of the closure of the Long Fellow Bridge. A new model formulation, along with an important new preprocessing step was proposed to obtain good solutions fast for realistically sized problems. Real life data of the Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority (MBTA) was used. Results were presented to the board of the MBTA, at Transport for Londen. Research led to the paper : ”Shuttle Planning for Link Closures in Urban Public Transport Networks” (submitted to Transportation Science).
