Create. Educate. Grow.
I must be the only person in the world looking forward to winter. For me it is a time to re-charge and get ready for Spring.
We had a busy Fall….Deanna Stearns, GCO First Vice-President, and I attended ten wonderful District Meetings. No two
were alike. Many thanks to the District Directors who made
these meetings possible. Our District Directors work very
hard to bring interesting meetings to all of you.
Both Holiday Programs were well attended. Central Atlantic
Regional Awards were handed out at that time. Linda Holzheimer gave a delightful program on Holiday Designs. The Southern Districts raised over
$800 with their Festival of Trees and Wreaths Auction to donate to the GCO Scholarship
Fund. Many thanks to Cleveland District Director Marilee Zarbock and helper, Akron
District Director Marlene Hatton and Columbus District Director Karen Ciula for hosting
these events.
Our first Education Days were well received, with over 90 attending in Cleveland (Thank
you Judy Guinn and presenters) and 23 attending in Columbus (Thank you Barbara Shepard and presenters). We are looking forward to next Fall for a repeat of these programs.
Watch for information.
Since I wrote for our last issue of Garden Greetings, we have had numerous Blue Star
Dedications. Many thanks to the following Garden Clubs for their hard work in making
this possible:

information relating to all of our schools, meetings and projects. I look forward to seeing
you all at the Annual Meeting. Martha Shample, our Penny Pines Chairman challenged
me to have my hair dyed green if we planted 2,000 trees and we are past that challenge.

Convention Programs and Speakers
GCO Board Dinner
All GCO Board members past and present (and spouses) are invited to a very special evening
at the WPAFB Officers Club. The Wright-Patt Club is one of the finest and largest in the Air
Force. We will enjoy our dinner with a spectacular view of the busiest runways on the base.
The Ladies of Dayton will welcome you warmly and you will be entertained by the Air Force
Band of Flight. Transportation will be provided from the Hope Hotel. Cost: $35 per person.
Scholarship Breakfast: The Peril of Native Trees by Ken Macke
All GCO members are welcome to attend the Annual Scholarship Breakfast where the names of GCO’s
2016 Scholarship recipients will be revealed. GCO Life Members in attendance will be recognized and
given a special gift. A special program will be presented by Ken Macke. An engineer by trade, Ken and
his wife Linda own Cross Creek Farm. The 54-acre farm in southern Clermont County includes acres
of native woodlands that have been monitored by the USDA for the presence of the Asian Longhorn
Beetle. Ken is an avid tree and nature enthusiast, whose interests also include geology, paleontology,
astronomy and local history. Ken will discuss current infestations that threaten native trees in Ohio,
with a historical perspective, comparing current threats to the Chestnut Blight of 1904. You are sure to
come away with a new perspective. Cost: $25 per person.
Native, Wild, Invasive by Mary Ann Ferguson Rich
Mary Ann Ferguson-Rich is an Ohio native and has somewhat adapted to her cloudy Northeastern
Ohio environment. She is a Past President of Garden Club of Ohio, a Master Flower Show Judge, and
has been gardening and hiking in the woods since childhood. The photo shows a piece of Mary Ann’s
heart in the native plants and wild flowers growing at Cathedral Falls in West Virginia.
Pressed Flower Picture Workshop by Carol Johnson
Carol Johnson has been a member of a Garden Club for over 38 years. She has been pressing flowers
for 10 years and finds enjoyment with every bloom. She has shared her experiences with several dozen
Garden Clubs as well as Judges Study Class and Southern Region Ohio Judges Council. She recently
visited the Galapagos Islands with National Garden Clubs, Inc. Carol will lead members in creating their
own beautiful Pressed Flower Picture. Space is limited to 25 attendees. Cost: $10
The Lure of Carnivorous Plants by Michael Szesze
Michael Szesze is an award-winning science teacher of 32 years. His accolades include Maryland
Science Teacher-of-the-Year, the Maryland Alternate to the NASA Teacher-In-Space Project, and the
National Science Foundation VIP-Outstanding Physics Teacher. Michael's love and enthusiasm for
science have inspired thousands of students and teachers alike. Michael's insight into excellence in
teaching and learning have led students to explore the fascinating world of carnivorous plants and
develop experiences with inquiry science. He has been raising carnivorous plants since childhood.
Michael is currently the owner and operator of Carnivorous Plant Nursery in Smithsburg, MD.
Darn! I Wish I Had Known That! by Pam Bennett
Pam Bennett went to Miami University in Oxford, Ohio with the dream of becoming a teacher. Her first summer
back from college she worked at a small garden center in her hometown of Springfield, Ohio and it
changed her life. That's where she "fell in love with the plant world". Pam continued her education
at The Ohio State University and majored in Landscape Horticulture. While attending Ohio State, her
mentor, Dr. Steven Still taught woody ornamentals. Pam learned over 900 species of trees and can
still remember most of them! Pam is the State Master Gardener Volunteer Coordinator for Ohio and
Horticulture Educator and Director for Ohio State University Extension in Clark County.

Winter Bloomers by Debbie Osborn
Debbie Osborn has lived in Ohio her entire life. She graduated from the Ohio State University
with a BA in Psychology and did graduate study in Early Childhood Development. She taught
Special Education for 36 years and is now retired. She got her love for gardening from her
mother and her aunt, who both loved to grow roses. She loves drawing birds and butterflies to
her garden and is planning a monarch butterfly garden. She is an avid photographer. Debbie is
a member of the Westerville Garden Club and has served on several committees. She currently
lives in Westerville with her rescue dog, Dakota.
VA Grotto Gardens by Susan Pearson
After retiring from the University of Dayton, Susan Pearson took the OSU Master Gardener
class in Montgomery County. This fueled her thirst for knowledge about plants and gardening. She is an ONLA Certified Master Technician and has taken numerous advanced training
classes. She is heavily involved in restoring the historic Grotto on the Dayton campus of the
Veterans Administration Medical Center. The gardens were originally created and maintained by Civil War veterans in the late 1800s. At one time the gardens were considered “the”
destination spot west of the Alleghenies, rivaling Central Park and drawing over 600,000 visitors a year. Over the years, the
gardens disappeared due to neglect and budget constraints. Volunteers from the Montgomery County Master Gardeners,
working in partnership with the AVHC and the VA hospital, have reclaimed 12 of the 25 original acres of the Grotto. Susan
will take us on a journey of the restoration of this oasis in Dayton.
Succulent Workshop by Barbara Shepard
Barbara Shepard is an avid lifelong gardener. She is active in Westerville Garden Club, GCO, CAR and
NGC. She is a Master Gardening Study Consultant and Landscape Design Consultant; also an Environmental Studies Consultant. Barb presents monthly programs at Westerville Recreation Center and has
shared her expertise with countless garden clubs. She currently has a portfolio of over 50 programs. She
has been interested in succulent structures ever since she first saw a green roof doghouse at Meadow
View Growers in New Carlisle. She has been playing with wreaths, green birdhouses, succulent animals,
vertical walls, and succulent topiaries ever since. Space is limited to 25 attendees. Cost: $25
The Weird and Wild World of Flowers by The Flowerman
Steve Smith aka The Flowerman, created a special floral concept after spending years selling gladiolus from the back of his truck at farmers' markets in the Dayton area. In 2001, the Do-It-Yourself
wedding flower concept was born. The decision to invite customers to become part of the flower
experience changed how Steve conducted business. Today, The Flowerman has a wide range of
floral materials available in ready-made or special ordered bouquets or you can choose to purchase
stems from a well-stocked and over-sized walk in cooler!

Class 9: Girls by Dima Dmitriev
Using a background. Design will be displayed on a table top. Space allowed is 32” W; 30” D and
Height unlimited.
Section D: Eligible for the Petite Award
Designers Choice of plant material. Will be displayed near eye level on a pale gray pedestal.
Class 10: Le Berceau by Berthe Morisot
A Design not to exceed 3” in any direction. Designer has complete freedom of style.
Class 11: Cardinal Couple by Charley Harper
A design using 2 Containers. Overall design not to exceed 5” in any direction.
Class 12: Composition Vii by Wassily Kandinsky
A design not to exceed 8” in any direction. Designer has complete freedom of Design style. No
background. Design will be staged in front of a mirrored alcove supplied by Committee.

Garden Club of Ohio, Inc. pays the Department of Agriculture/Division of Plant
Health/Plant Pest Control Section for the Nursery Dealer’s Certificate each year. All
clubs who pay dues to GCO are covered. If your club has a plant sale open to the public, you must have a 2016 Certificate available at the plant sale. On the GCO Statement
of Dues mailed to you in January, indicate if you need one and it will be mailed to your
Club along with your 2016 Membership Cards.

2016 Leadership Conferences
Cindy Kozakewich, Leadership Conference Chairman
During 2016 GCO will be presenting Leadership Conferences in the Cincinnati, Jackson, Mansfield, Toledo, Akron, and Youngstown Districts. These conferences are a special opportunity for
ALL interested club members to gain valuable knowledge on how to improve their garden club
experience. Topics will include meeting basics, budgeting, ideas for increasing and maintaining
membership, tax information, award opportunities, and much more. Club presidents, especially,
will benefit from attending, but it must be emphasized that ALL members are welcome and encouraged to attend. Cost is just $5 per attendee.

Cleo Lehman Will Be The Featured Speaker
Mary Lou Smith, GCO 2nd Vice-President
Cleo Lehman will present the afternoon program at each District
Meeting. Her program is called, “Wake Up to Spring”. She will
demonstrate how to use containers to attract birds and butterflies to
your garden. Cleo will also include some floral designs in her program.

Cleo has been an avid gardener since the age of 3 and in her own
words, has developed a rather quirky gardening style. She graduated
from college with a degree in Agriculture and taught Vocational
Agriculture in Eastern Kentucky before marrying her husband, Brock,
who is also in the horticulture industry. One of Cleo’s greatest joys is
talking about gardening to groups of like-minded people. She has had
the pleasure of giving programs in both horticulture and basic design
to many garden clubs and organizations in Kentucky and Ohio. Cleo
joined Leaf and Blossom Garden Club in the Akron District in 1999 and
hasn’t looked back.

We have collected $2,275 since April 1, 2015 from ten districts representing 43 out of 157 GCO
clubs. This represents an increase of 23% over this same period last year. While this is commendable, it represents only 27% participation of the total GCO clubs. The offer of six Nature Conservancy magazines and Ohio Newsletters has helped to increase donations of $50 or more. Our
question and answer service about the Nature Conservancy has been helpful and it will continue.

Garden Club celebrated Carroll County’s
Bicentennial with a Blue Star Marker Dedication on July 1. It was a picture perfect
evening on Carrollton’s Public Square. The
combined efforts of the Carrollton garden
clubs involved a year of planning with the
village of Carrollton, several local businesses who donated services, and civic organizations that assisted with the preparation
and installation of the marker.

The Patriot Guard Riders surrounded the
Square for an impressive opening of the
ceremony. Many local veterans and Boy Scout Troop 141 participated in presenting the
flag colors and leading attendees in reciting the Pledge. The singing of patriotic songs
was led by Molly Winters, Choir Director of a local church.
Celine Hallier, Northern Region Blue Star Marker Chairman and GCO President Lynn
Fronk made brief remarks regarding the history and significance of the Blue Star
Marker. Deanna Stearns, GCO 1st Vice President, was also in attendance as well as
many Carroll county residents and public officials.
Girl Scout Troops from Carrollton assisted with serving refreshments on the lawn behind the historic McCook House. Roger Barto, speaker for the Blue Star Marker Dedication and a Marine veteran, said it best, “If you like your freedom, thank a veteran.”
Suburban Garden Club plans to continue with the patriotic theme of the Blue Star
Marker by designing a patriotic Christmas tree for the Holly Pine Lane event at the
Canton Garden Center in November. Patriotism is a gift for all seasons.
Down-to-Earth Garden Club Dedicates Blue Star Memorial

The Down-to-Earth Garden Club held its Blue Star
Memorial Dedication at the Ohio Veteran’s Home and
Cemetery in Sandusky, Ohio on September 13, 2015. As
a fitting tribute, the club planted dwarf Blue Star junipers and white daisy mums at the base of the marker on
Patriot Day, September 11th.
The ceremony was held in the Veteran’s Hall with many
resident veterans in attendance. The Ohio Veteran’s
Home Honor Guard presented the colors and led the
Pledge of Allegiance, followed by the National Anthem
sung by Mr. Steve Kohler. Ms. Rita Dominick, Civic Chair,

offered the invocation. Kathy Kovatch,
the club’s Blue Star Co-Chair, introduced honored guests. Graciously attending the celebration was Mansfield
District Director Marilyn Ringle, as
well as GCO Board Members Martha
Shample, Joan Wikel and Barb Ruhe.
The history of the Blue Star Marker
was presented by Celine Hallier,
Northern Region Blue Star Chairman.
A moving Military Tribute was offered
by retired Marines, Sgt. Jeffery Smith,
Lt. Col. John F. May, Maj. Keri L. May
and 1st. Sgt. Mike Parker.
The ceremony then moved outside where the marker, placed beside the Veteran’s
Memorial Walkway, was unveiled by members Karen Anderton and Gale Ringel. Downto-Earth Garden Club President Pat Kramer dedicated the marker. A wreath was laid
at the base of the marker by members Kathy Fischer and Ginny Wicker Piddock, as the
club’s Blue Star Co-Chair and GCO Bird Chairman Bonnie Faber described the meaning of her design. OVH Deputy Director of Administration, Joe Anthony, accepted the
marker and OVH Chaplain, Rev. Paul Birmingham gave the benediction.
Following the ceremony, a reception was held in the Veteran’s Hall with refreshments
provided by the members of the Down-to-Earth Garden Club.
The Blue Star Memorial was a result of two years of planning, commitment and pride of all 18 members. The Down-to-Earth Garden Club is
grateful to the Ohio Veteran’s Home for the placement of the marker and
the use of its facilities for the ceremony.
Hilliard Area Garden Club Dedicates New Blue Star Memorial

Greenview Garden Club 50th Anniversary with Aullwood Audubon Center and Farm
Greenview Garden Club is celebrating its 50th
Anniversary of association with Aullwood
Audubon Center and Farm near Dayton. In
1965, club members together with Aullwood
leaders developed a plan for an Herb Garden in
the Farm area as a teaching garden for children
and adult visitors. Our club members have continued to maintain
and improve the
herb garden over
these 50 years.
Throughout the
year, children visit
the garden on field
trips and learn about growing herbs. Aullwood Applefest and Farm
Babies Fest offer special opportunities for our members to welcome
families and other visitors to learn about growing herbs.

Trumbull County Herb Society Dedicates Butterfly Garden to Honor Betty Bailes
The Trumbull County Herb Society
held a dedication ceremony for the
new Betty Bailes Butterfly Garden
honoring their late co-founder. The
garden is located on a lovely spot in
the rose garden behind City Hall in
Warren.
Robin Liddle spoke at the wellattended affair sharing that Betty
herself was like a butterfly. Other
speakers were Kathy Telego of Trumbull County Soil and Water, who gave
a presentation on ‘Monarch Butterflies’ and Di Matijevic, Youngstown District Director, who spoke on ‘Saving Our Pollinators’. The
program concluded with a butterfly release followed by refreshments
and a social time to recall Betty’s great knowledge and love of all plants,
gardening, nature and her unselfish willingness to share that knowledge.
Trumbull County Herb Society Member Sweeps Flower Show
In our area, garden news is shared far and wide. One of our own, Cindy
Salerno, swept the male-dominated “Youngstown Men’s Garden Club’s
51st Annual Horticultural Show” held at Millcreek Park in Youngstown.
Cindy won 7 blue ribbons and a BIG rosette for the “Best in Show”, a
Chocolate Cosmos. This cosmos looks good enough to eat and smells like a
Hershey Kiss! Congratulations,Cindy!

Ridgewood Garden Club of Parma Spruces Up Stearns Homestead
Work began in the spring to prepare the beds
by the Parma Parks and Recreation Department
employees, RGC members and their spouses,
National Honor Society Students and Park
Elementary Student Council Students.
On June 6, 2015 the RGC Community Involvement Committee gathered a group of volunteers at the Stearns Homestead to bring the
sparkle back to the jewel of Parma. The group
consisted of 20 garden club members, 21 local
boy scouts, cub scouts and girl scouts and their
families. The garden beds around the Stearns
farm house were reestablished by replacing the
old and half-dead bushes with new plantings. A cutting garden was made so the flowers could be
used to decorate the inside of the historic houses and to be sold at the Farmers Market. Over the
course of the summer the RGC members worked on other projects to bring back the gardens and
the property on the Historic Homestead.
Established in 1855, the 48-acre working farm was placed on the National Register of Historical
Places in 1981. Free and open to the public, it is a favorite place for school children and history
buffs. It is home to many farm animals and is operated by the Parma Historical Society. The site
also hosts a Farmers Market on Saturdays during the months of June through October.
The Ridgewood Garden Club extends special thanks to all the volunteers, the Director of Parks
and Recreation, the Proud of Parma organization and the generous donors. The club is hoping to
receive grant money to cover the painting and minor repairs of the two farm houses in the near
future.

Cost of Freedom Tribute Honors Fallen Soldiers
The Twinsburg Garden Club (TGC) was honored to play a part in the Cost of
Freedom Tribute held in July 2015. The event was sponsored by the Twinsburg VFW Post 4929 under the leadership of Commander Joe Jasany, a U.S.
Marine who served in Vietnam. This incredible event attracted more than
20,000 visitors, and featured an 80 percent scale of the National Vietnam
Wall replica. Other attractions were a mobile military museum, a Vietnam
village, vintage cars and military vehicles, life-sized oil paintings of 23 fallen
soldiers from The Lima Company 3rd Battalion, 25th Regiment, a Twinsburg
district student art show, media coverage of the Vietnam War, Bob Hope’s
memorable USO Christmas shows, and more.
Commander Jasany asked TGC Members Sue
Davis and Virginia Schmidt if the Garden Club
would help with colorful annual planters for the
event. When planning began in early 2015, the
club learned that the Commander had a vision of
tropical plants surrounding the Vietnam village,
so TGC volunteered to make that vision a reality.
Last February with a $300 budget, Davis started
calling her contacts from the Nursery Growers
of Lake County Ohio who had contributed to the
club’s Habitat for Humanity project in 2014. At
the same time, TGC member Gail Takacs, who
has a strong PR background, was writing and
sending out press materials, and calling local media outlets, which garnered tremendous publicity.
In the beginning, TGC’s plant material list was only a wish list. But in time, it turned into a nursery
of 765 trees and plants worth nearly $10,000 in retail dollars with the added bonus of golf carts.
Donations included 30 five-foot palms from Lowe’s, and enough lumber, courtesy of Home Depot, for
Post 4929 veteran Ken Roddie to build wooden planter boxes. Kollman’s Greenhouse donated $250
to be used toward the purchase of their specialty red, white and blue petunias, soil and fertilizer. For
five weeks, the plants were watered once or twice a day by a rotating team of TGC volunteers. A local
resident volunteered his unused greenhouse, so the planters grew to the peak of perfection.
The 72 planter boxes containing the petunias were slipped into the wooden planters and then
placed below AVTT’s commemorative military panels. The rest of the plant material was carefully
placed around the various exhibits, tents, and the Vietnam village with its thatched-roof huts, rice
paddy and guard towers, constructed by Post veterans. Plants were watered daily by volunteers,
led by TGC member Kaye Collins, with no loss. The planters were later sold by TGC to recoup expenses and $150 was donated to VFW Post 4929.
The Cost of Freedom Tribute only lasted four days, but its legacy of donated trees and plants lives on
for all to enjoy. Plantings include a serviceberry tree and perennials in TGC’s new pollinator garden at
the Twinsburg Library, as well as trees and perennials planted around the sponsoring communities of
Reminderville, Twinsburg, and Twinsburg Township, as well as the host site Twinsburg High School.
This amazing event truly provided a forum for members of the community and beyond to come
together to honor-respect-remember all those whom we have asked to stand in harm’s way to protect
and defend our great country.

DESIGN SPOTLIGHT - Traditional Line Mass

This Valentine inspired design for use at
the dinner table is a traditional line mass composed
of all fresh flowers. The arrangement is symmetrically
balanced (equal on both sides) and one could
consider the soft pink carnations to lend to an
emotional romantic response.
There is a textural difference between the smooth
Salal leaves and green button Chrysanthemums while
the Monte Casino white asters and pink carnations
are crinkled.
Because all of the components of this design are fresh
plant material, it could be entered in a flower show class that is eligible for The Tri Color Award.

Seeds of Friendship
Margie Williams, Seeds of Friendship Chairman
GCO Clubs are once again invited to participate in Seeds of Friendship, a program designed by “Partners in Conservation” at the Columbus Zoo. As you may remember, the program’s objective is to
assist the courageous people of Rwanda who suffered greatly in
1994 when more than 1,000,000 men, women and children were
killed during the genocide. Donated seeds are taken to Rwanda each May by Dr. Charlene
Jendry, a gorilla expert at the Columbus Zoo. She personally distributes them to Rwandan
families who live in villages near the gorilla habitats and to the Imbabazi Orphanage. The
seeds will help provide fresh produce for these families and the orphanage.
The following seeds are needed:
Vegetables: Green cabbage, tomatoes, carrots, green peppers, bush green beans and
onions.
Flowers: Cosmos and zinnias - all colors. The Rwandan women like to plant these flowers
around their vegetable gardens.
Please send only these kinds of seeds. All other kinds will be donated to community gardens in Columbus. If you prefer, you may send checks made out to Garden Club of Ohio
and the money will be used to buy additional seeds.
The seeds and checks may be sent to Margie Williams, 1947 Marble Cliff Crossing Court,
Columbus, OH 43204. They may also be brought to District Meetings or to the State
Convention. All seeds must be received by May 1st.

WHY SHOULD MY GARDEN CLUB SPONSOR A FLOWER SHOW?

“Create, Educate, Grow”, GCO President Lynn Fronk’s theme, can be applied to your garden club’s decision to sponsor a Standard Flower Show.
The planning and organization of a Flower Show may seem like a daunting
task, especially if you have never had a flower show or have not held one
in many years. But with careful execution, this process can be successfully
achieved.
Reasons for a Flower Show
- Create: A Flower Show is the perfect opportunity to create excitement and comradery within
your club. There is no better way to involve club members, with their own individual set of
talents, than with a Flower Show. One member may have an artistic bent and would love to
be involved with signage, artwork, and staging. Or a member may have creative writing skills
and would be perfect to help write the schedule for the show. How about involving that floral
designer who is looking for a stimulating outlet for her/his creative expression? Or the grower of
prize horticulture (or even a patio gardener) could become involved in the horticulture portion of
the show. The list goes on, and on. The key is to get many members inspired and they will take
ownership.
- Educate: A Flower Show is the perfect vehicle to educate garden club members and the public
about the aims of National Garden Clubs, Inc. which are “to promote the love of gardening, floral
design, and civic and environmental responsibility”. Before the show, learning new ways to create
designs or learning the particulars of a specific plant or flower can help attract the interests of
the members. During the Flower Show, the attending public may be educated on the art of floral
design and the beauty and science of horticulture. This will also help familiarize them with civic
projects that the club has completed. Environmental issues, garden landscaping, and youth projects are all fun ways of educating the public and can be incorporated into the Flower Show. Do
some of your members love crafts? That is another special way to add interest to a Flower Show.
- Grow: The planning for a Flower Show is a great way to nurture your club member’s interest
in the intricacies of floral art and the joy of gardening. It is a tremendous way to showcase the
members’ skills and to have them expand their horizons by exploring some new avenues. You
definitely grow by trying and putting on a Standard Flower Show.

Some points to remember:
A Standard Flower Show may be small (12 designs and 20 horticulture entries) or large with multiple design classes, horticulture entries and special exhibits. The size of the show is determined by
the individual garden club and takes into account its membership number and expertise, the time
of year, and location.
The important thing to remember is that a Standard Flower Show’s success depends on delegation, participation, and good planning. Have fun with the process and involve your garden club
members.

BYLAW AND POLICY RECOMMENDATIONS

The following recommendations were approved at the September 23, 2015
Board of Directors meeting. These will be voted upon at the annual meeting to be held in Dayton, April 7, 2016.
Items in red are additions/changes. Items crossed out as such -- Debbie –
are to be deleted.
Bylaw Article II. Objectives and Policies
At the Board Meeting on October 10, 2010, the group voted to recommend the following
change to the “Objectives and Purposes”. The change was approved at the 2011 Annual Meeting.
The following wording is what we have on file with the Secretary of the State of Ohio, in our
articles of incorporation. It was inadvertently not changed in our Bylaws.
“The objectives and purposes of Garden Club of Ohio, Inc. shall be:
1. Garden Club of Ohio, Inc. supports endeavors in every aspect of gardening through
educational programs, horticulture, and floriculture. (October 10, 2010).
2. Operating exclusively as a charitable and educational organization in carrying out
said objectives and purposes.
3. To coordinate the interests of garden clubs and affiliate organizations of Ohio, to
bring them into a closer relation of mutual helpfulness by association, conference,
and correspondence.
Article III. FEDERATION MEMBERSHIP
Rationale: A “federation” is an old term for the joining of governments or organizations for
a purpose/issue. The federation leaders rule those in the federation. “Membership” is a more
appropriate term.
Article III, Section 1 – Federation Membership
“shall be federated joined to form…”
Article III, Section 3, Membership
First part stays the same, and becomes letter A.
Section 4, Fees This becomes letter B.
Article IV. Membership
Section 1. Categories
“The categories of membership shall be club member, member-at-large, life member donor and
affiliate organizations.”
Rationale: Addition of the word “donor” as Garden Club of Ohio, Inc. does not have a life
member designation. See Section C. Through the years, “organizations” was dropped from
affiliate. You must be an organization to be an affiliate member. Individuals must become
members at large, not affiliates.
B. Member-At-Large
Membership-At-Large shall be granted those individuals interested in the purposes of GCO, not
belonging to a member garden club. In the federation.
Rationale: To remain consistent.
2. Have the privilege of attending District and State meetings. without a right to vote.
Rationale: Trying to be positive in the Bylaws. Who is allowed to vote is addressed in policy.
C. Life Member Donor
The purpose of a Life Member Donor is to support the Life Membership Scholarship Fund. To
qualify as a Life Member Donor, a member shall:

1. Make a contribution of Fifty Dollars ($50.00) to the Life Membership Scholarship Fund.
2. Contributions may also be made to honor a person or as a memorial to a person.
3. Membership in GCO is NOT a prerequisite.
4. Application shall be made to the Life Member Donor Chairman.
5. Be presented by the Life Member Donor Chairman, at a board meeting and admitted to
membership.
6. Have the privilege of attending District and State meetings. without the right to vote.
Rationale: A clearer definition of the Life Member was needed. Life Member Donors receive no
other benefits of membership.
D. Affiliate Organizations Membership
“….who are recommended by the Affiliate Organizations Chairman.”
1. Application shall be made to the Affiliate Organizations Chairman.
2. b. “…at the subscription price.”
3. “The privilege of attendance….”
4. Eligible for the GCO/NGC Affiliate Organizations Awards.
5. Two (2) representatives to the Have the privilege of attending District….” without a right to vote.
Rationale: To be consistent.
Section 2. Rights and Privileges
A. All members shall be represented at the annual convention meeting as provided in Article VII,
Section 1, of these Bylaws and shall receive the official publication, Garden Greetings.
Per Robert’s Rules of Order, Newly Revised, 11th ed., page7, 8 & page 94, 20 – GCO holds an
annual meeting, not a convention. Article cite was a typo. We want Garden Greetings mentioned
as our official publication.
B. Members shall be eligible to hold elective or appointed office and to vote at the annual
meeting as described in Article VII, Section 1.
Rationale: This becomes “B”.
Removed the words: “serve as a delegate to the” and replaced convention with meeting.
Section 3 Dues – A. Strike “and Golden Circle members.”
Rationale: Golden Circle member designation is an honorary title, not a membership category.
B. Amount
Strike item #3 as Life Member Donor has its own description and is not a membership category.
C. Receipt of Dues
1. Statements shall be sent to clubs the first week of January February each year.
2. Dues are due and payable to the Executive Secretary, on March 31st by April 30th.
3. A second notice shall be sent if dues are not received by April May 1st.
D. Delinquency
Membership shall be terminated if dues are not received by April 20th May 31st.
E. Fiscal Year
The fiscal year shall be from April 1 – March 31 July 1 – June 30.
Rationale: Many clubs do not meet in winter months making it difficult to meet the March
deadline. The GCO Treasurer believes these dates will be more feasible for reporting and
meeting IRS filing deadlines, along with GCO Board Meeting reporting deadlines.
Please watch Garden Greetings and the GCO website for further updates or changes. The Bylaws/
Policy Committee is reviewing all Bylaws/Policies for correct wording, to be sure all of the Bylaws
should be Bylaws and not policies and vice versa.
