Dear Parents,
As you are aware, our annual International Week begins
on Monday, October 22nd, and the event culminates
with the Food Fair on Saturday, 27th. All details regarding the Opening Ceremony and cultural dress days have
been outlined in the weekly ISPS newsletter. We do ask
that our students take part in all the events that will be
held throughout the week. In classrooms, teachers will
have discussions on the United Nation theme: Water
Cooperation. We know that water is a precious commodity and in many countries a regular supply of water
to homes just does not exist.

an exercise in critical thinking, which first encourages
students to become familiar

ISPS Celebrates the UN Year
of
Water Cooperation 2013
“I encourage UNESCO’s Member
States to take full advantage of this
opportunity, and to assist in ensuring
that this particular United Nations
Year is a successful and memorable
365-day event.”
Irina Bokova
Director-General, UNESCO
In December 2010, the United Nations
General Assembly declared 2013 as
the United Nations International Year
of Water Cooperation. In the resolution the General Assembly expresses
its concern by the slow and uneven
progress in achieving the goal of halving the proportion of the population
without sustainable access to safe
drinking water and basic sanitation,
while global climate change and other
challenges seriously affect water
quantity and quality.
UN-Water has called upon UNESCO to
lead the 2013 United Nations International Year on Water Cooperation,
because of the Organization’s unique
multidisciplinary approach which
blends the natural and social sciences,
education, culture and communication. Given the intrinsic nature of water as a transversal and universal element, the United Nations International Year on Water Cooperation naturally would embrace and touch upon all
these aspects.
What is Water Cooperation?
The resolution emphasizes that water
is critical for sustainable development, including environmental integrity and the eradication of poverty
and hunger, and is indispensable for
human health and well-being, and
central to achieving the Millennium
Development Goals. The objective of
this International Year is to raise
awareness, both on the potential for
increased cooperation, and on the
challenges facing water management
in light of the increase in demand for
water access, allocation and services.
The Year will highlight the history of
successful water cooperation initiatives, as well as identify burning issues
on water education, water diplomacy,
trans-boundary water management,
financing cooperation, national/international legal frameworks,
VOLUME 19, ISSUE #9
and the linkages with the Millennium
Development Goals. It also will provide an opportunity to capitalize on
the momentum created at the United
Nations Conference on Sustainable
Development (Rio+20), and to support the formulation of new objectives that will contribute towards developing water resources that are truly sustainable
Here at ISPS this message from the
United Nations will be highlighted at
the Opening Ceremony of our International Week celebrations on Monday
October 22th at 12:45 in the school’s
gymnasium. All of our community is
invited to be a part of this special occasion. Our community is invited to
wear traditional wear on this day and
we all especially look forward to the
Parade of ISPS Nations as we start this
highly anticipated week.
Also mark your diaries and purchase
your tickets early for the culminating
celebrations, the PTO Food Festival on
Saturday 27th October. It promises to
be once again, an event to remember!

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Hello Middle School Parents,
We have had a very productive two weeks as a Middle
School and ISPS community of learners.
PowerSchool Parent Portal is Now Open for Middle and
High School: The Middle School and High School have
opened the Parent Portal to PowerSchool. It took a while to
work the “bugs” out of the system but we now up and running. The specific login information was sent home on Wed.
Oct. 17. Please log in to check your students grades, course
information, and other information. Improving parent ability to help their children with their learning is a high priority
for us. Opening the Parent Portal is just the first step. If
there are glitches in your child's specific grade book, please
let our teachers know so they can fix the problem.
Individual Student MAP Assessment Results Went Home:
Our students did a great job on the MAP assessment. We
sent home the individual reports on Wed. Oct. 17. Please
visit the www.nwea.org site MAP Parent Tool Kit and for
more information on the MAP and ways to help your child.

We have amazing student athletes at ISPS, and our program

have our students experience the physical, social, and psychological benefits of being on an organized sports team.
We are looking forward to seeing our students in team colors supporting one another as they embrace our school spirit. More specific details will come regarding the logistics of

Hello Everyone,
COME AND SHARE STORIES FROM YOUR CULTURE
Next week is International Week, and the ISPS Library celebrates this event by inviting parents to share their cultural
experiences in literature with our students. Parents are invited to read or tell folklore or traditional stories from their culture during our library periods. Please call Nicha, Ijanaya or
me on extension 125 or 126 if you are interested in participating in this library event.
Also from the beginning of November I am offering "Reading
for the SATs" as an after-school activity. The College Board
says that Secondary School students should be reading 1/2
hour a day, and that students should be reading 25 books a
year to do well on the SAT's and in university. Reading helps
students to develop the comprehension skills and analytical
skills they need for academic success and life. We will meet
after school on a Wednesday or Thursday.

Receta para Tortilla de Patatas
Crack the eggs into a large mixing bowl and beat by hand with
a whisk or fork. P our in the potato onion mixture. Mix together with a large spoon.
Pour 1-2 Tbsp of olive oil into a small, non-stick frying pan
(aprox. 9-10”) and heat on medium heat.
When hot, stir the potato onion mixture once more and
“pour” into the pan and spread out evenly. Allow the egg to
cook around the edges.
When the mixture has browned on the bottom, you are ready
to turn it over to cook the other side. Take the frying pan to a
sink. Place a large dinner plate (12”) upside down over the
frying pan. With one hand on the frying pan handle and the
other on top of the plate to hold it steady, quickly turn the
frying pan over and the omelet will “fall” onto the plate.
Place the frying pan back on the range and put just enough oil
to cover the bottom and sides of the pan. Let the pan warm
for 30 seconds or so. Now slide the omelet into the frying
pan. Use the spatula to shape the sides of the omelet.
