vibrant environment that enriches
character, while inspiring a passion for
learning and personal excellence.
Students’ Honor Code
On my honor, I pledge my academic
integrity, honesty, tolerance, and respect to the ISPS community, and I will
encourage others to do the same. As a
member of this community, I will not
lie, cheat, steal, or treat others in a
manner that I would not wish to be
treated.
ISPS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
Dear Parents and Students,
The CAISSA girls’ basketball and boys’ soccer
teams comported themselves well during the
recent tournament at the Carol Morgan
School in the Dominican Republic. The girls’
basketball team placed a solid third while the
boys placed fourth in soccer. A big thank you
to coach Ali and his team for making this tournament possible. Go Caimans!
Ms. O’Donovan went to Matura this past
Wednesday with a group of High School students to participate in the annual Turtle tagging trip. Students measure and tag turtles as
they participate in world-wide turtle research.
I am pleased to report that there have been
no new cases of scabies or head lice over the
course of the past ten days. I am optimistic
that the application of accepted health protocols has been effective in addressing these
issues. One case of chickenpox has been identified and proper procedures are being used
to address this situation.
The school yearbook is on sale now at ISPS in
the mornings between 7:00 and 7:30 a.m. and
after-school between 2:00-2:30 p.m. at the
front of the school. A huge thank you to the
yearbook Committee and the PTO for all of
their help in distributing this publication.
Please do contact Mr. R. Lue Shue
([email protected]) or Ms. E. Tumavicus
([email protected]) if you have any
questions about yearbook purchases.
The high school drama production of OZ will
be performed this coming Monday, June 10
and again on Tuesday, June 11. The shows
will begin at 6:00 p.m. and tickets are TT$20
for students and TT$40 for adults. Come out
for a fantastic evening with our young actors!
The annual Sports Award Ceremony will be
held this coming Wednesday, June 12. This
ceremony is a celebration of the athletic
achievements of our students.
Next week will be quite busy. Please do check
the monthly calendar for the schedule of
events that relate to your children.
Thank you to parents and drivers for your help
in keeping our young ones safe during pick up
and drop off. I’ve noticed that everyone is
making a special effort to have students exit
vehicles safely on the drivers’ side of the vehicle.
See you at school,
Dr. Mark Lee

High School Final Exams
The purpose of the semester exams is to monitor student learning. They are just one of the measures used in high school to
evaluate student progress. Other measures include, projects,
performance tasks, quizzes, tests, homework and in-class assignments. The semester exams count for at most 20% of the overall
semester grade – so they are not the “be all and end all” of assessment here at ISPS. However, they are important enough to
13th June 2013
study for and take seriously. The exams take place over the last
few days of school.
Any student with a clash on his or her schedule should bring this
to the attention of the teachers in question. So long as teachers
receive sufficient notice clashes can be avoided.

ISPS DIVE TRIP
Kudos to Mr. Scheer for leading a great dive trip to St Vincent and the Grenadines. There were many students, especially from Middle School, and their parents and it was a perfect family event. We even had two past students David Pickering and Kelly Coleman. It was safe and successful and a good time was had by all! We saw some lovely reefs and marine life and did our bit for saving the reefs by catching lots of lion fish.
Thanks also to Vidya of Tobago Dive Experience who made the excellent travel and accommodation arrangements.

Students in 6th grade Language Arts/Social Studies (LASS) are
finishing up the year with a good read and a look back.
Students were asked to bring in a
novel they enjoyed to share with
their classmates. The students then
got to choose from the large library
of books brought in. It was great to
see what books students liked and
the variety of what they read at
home. Students are currently reading each other’s books and will be finishing off the year doing a
small project on the novel they chose.
ISPS WEEKLY NEWSLETTER
For Social Studies the classes are making a class magazine looking back over the important issues and events that happened
around the world this year. They are deciding what is important
and why. It will be interesting to see the comparison of what
the two sections (6A and 6M) think was important this year and
how they chose those events.

Elementary Notes
Dear Parents,
Our doors are closing for the summer vacation in the next
nine days after a successful academic year 2012-2013, and
we are winding down and preparing our students for their
next steps. We are on target for completing our Primary
Years Program (PYP) units, and all our classes will be completing their assessments and reflections on the final unit.
We have come to the end of another successful year with
the Primary Years Programme (PYP). We thank all our parents who have supported the programme by attending field
trips, presenting on topics, attending Town Meetings, supporting students with the Grade 5 Exhibition and all the
many events held throughout the year.
This time of year is always bitter-sweet with the many families and faculty who leave our shores. We hope that your
experience with us has been memorable. Please remember
to keep in touch with us and tell how the children are doing
in their new environment. We wish you well!
Our transitional ceremonies for Kindergarten and Grade Five
students will take place next week. Grade Five students will
complete their elementary years and will be moving on to
Middle School. There are six students who have completed
the full PYP , and we have seen their growth over the last
five to seven years.
Our final week of school will be filled with many activities,
please read your class newsletter for more information. Also,
the PTO is planning a fun activity for the students on June
20th.
A gentle reminder to return all class and library books.
Yearbooks are available at the front office. Don’t leave this
year without a copy!
On behalf of the Elementary Staff, we wish you a happy and
safe vacation and we look forward to seeing all those who
will be returning in August.

SPECIAL LIBRARY GUESTS
SUMMER READING
Krystel-Marie Ramnath, an animal behaviour specialist, came to
school on Thursday afternoon to speak to Grade Four students
about dogs and dog care in Trinidad and Tobago. She offered
practical advice for how to take care for a dog in Trinidad, how
to approach a dog to avoid dog bites and general information
about dogs.
The school year is coming to a close, and that means there will
be even more time for reading. There are many studies that
show students who read regularly during the vacation come
back three to four months ahead of their non-reading peers. This
is the time when students should feel free to explore new genres
and new series.
Kyrstel is very much involved in animal rescue in
eastern Trinidad. She works along with a vet in
the east to rescue animals such as Lily, a pitbull
that had to be saved by the fire department
after she was found hiding in the roof of the
Tunapuna Elementary school.
Here are some web sites with some reading lists from different
schools and librarians so that you can see what other students
are reading.

The ISPS library invited the YTC Mentoring team last Monday to
speak to Grade 8. Ashton Blandon, one of my former students
at YTC, delivered a frank talk about the importance of respect
and following school rules and parents’ rules. Ashton and his

teammate, Dana spoke about many social issues that teenagers
face these days. Students were very receptive to the talk.

It was a very challenging tournament and we encountered some
frustrations with our boys on the field of play. Our players also
suffered numerous injuries.
All were treated by doctors at the school and two (Elias Periera
and Sasha Chow) were taken to the hospital for additional treatment. Marc Stauble injured his hand, but refused to stop playing
since we did not have another Goal Keeper (he was outstanding). Elias suffered a fractured nose and was splinted. Sasha's left
knee was twisted and she was put in a cast.
Most Valuable Player:
Marinna Politti - Academia Cotopaxi
Our Anique Walker was selected for the All Tournament team.

There were numerous other minor injuries, which were treated
by the school doctors and ISPS coaches and Ms. C. Chen. Ms.
Chen absolutely outstanding. She ensured that all injured players received immediate and proper treatment. She was constantly on the go.
Coach Karl and Sprott were excellent. They were always in control, despite some trying moments with officials, our players,
and even other coaches.
Most Valuable Player:
Grant Sieard - ECA
At the end of the day, it was a very tough tournament, but the
kids came away with many valuable life lessons.
ISPS’ Eduardo Martinez and Shival Maharaj were outstanding
and were selected for the All tournament Team.

ISPS will be initiating a BYOD (Bring Your Own Device) program
next year as an option (recommended) for students in grades 612. This is an increasing trend as it allows students to experience the responsibilities of controlling their own technological
environment. Clearly, as they move beyond secondary school,
they will need to be proficient in utilizing much more sophisticated devices.
within the document itself. After becoming familiar with this
information, if you still have questions, feel free to contact one
of the following:
Ms. Adrienne deBoucher, Ed. Tech. Coordinator :

Dr. Mark Lee, Director : [email protected]
Mr. Josh Zarling, Middle School Principal : [email protected]
BYOD requires a laptop, with an option of also connecting a second device, such as a tablet, to the school’s network. The school
will ensure a positive, productive and safe online environment
through their network and guidelines.
Please read the ISPS BYOD Information Guide to learn more
about it and discuss it with your child. Links to specific details are
