IN THE COMMUNITY
To Our Community
In FY 2015, Detroit Public TV embarked on a new strategic plan to better connect us with our local community, sharpen our programming focus, and position us for success in a competitive, rapidly changing media environment. Our journey begins in Detroit. We are committed to telling the stories of Detroit, because we believe that what this City has experienced is a roadmap for other urban areas. From Detroit, we zoom out to document the people, places, and events that define life around the Great Lakes. In these pages, you’ll meet artists, educators, students, parents, caregivers, scientists, and many others who care, create and contribute. Our strategic plan also calls for a focus on pre-‐school education. Perhaps you know PBS is the most-‐
trusted institution in America, especially when it comes to providing a safe haven for our youngest viewers. But did you know that PBS offers a wealth of resources for parents and educators? Count on Detroit Public TV to deliver those resources where they’re needed and unite people in helping children become ready to learn. We’re building for the future. We envision a community that trusts public media to help people discover new ideas, make informed decisions and enjoy enriched lives. One way we’ll get there is through our production business. In this report you’ll see how our state-‐of-‐the art video truck, documentary unit and Detroit connections combine to educate, entertain and achieve goals. We invite you along for the ride. In the past year, we’ve accelerated our “Engagement and Touchpoints” efforts. Whether it’s at a sneak preview of a new PBS program, our station events for children or donors, or through the latest social media channel, we’re listening to you, exchanging ideas, and delivering content that’s relevant and meaningful. In FY 2015, your support helped make possible: New Year’s Eve with the DSO DPTV is changing the narrative about how people see Detroit with this live broadcast and web stream with Detroit Symphony Orchestra to ring in 2015, which was seen by thousands of people in all 50 states. Be School Smart / Pre-‐School U Through a book, videos, e-‐newsletters, community events, and online resources, DPTV offers parents and caregivers ways to encourage early learning and literacy in children under the age of five. Great Lakes Week In September 2014, DPTV provided three days of live online coverage and nightly 30-‐minute recap programs for Great Lakes Week from Grand Rapids. DPTV reports regularly on the Great Lakes. 2015 LOCAL CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT
IN THE COMMUNITY
American Black Journal Pulitzer prize-‐winner Stephen Henderson brings his keen observations and deep ties to Detroit to every interview he conducts as host of one of America’s longest running locally produced programs from an African American perspective. MiWeek Christy McDonald, Stephen Henderson and Nolan Finley present a lively review of the week’s events. The show’s focus starts in Detroit but grows to explore what’s happening in – and what the implications of Detroit’s story are for – Lansing and Michigan. Mackinac Policy Conference Since 2011, DPTV has taken viewers inside this annual gathering of Michigan decision-‐makers. This year, more than 37,000 people watched our coverage and 100,000 joined in via social media. Detroit Performs In the weekly TV series, viewers discovered a wide variety of inspiring artists and the website, detroitperforms.org, helps people discover, share and participate in cool events in Greater Detroit. The Sphinx Organization DPTV provided gavel-‐to-‐gavel coverage of SphinxCon, a three-‐day event to explore “empowering ideas for diversity in the arts.” DPTV also broadcast and streamed the 18th annual Sphinx Finals Concert showcasing young Black and Latino classical string players in concert. Detroit Remember When Two new specials in this series of Motor City memories included, Detroit’s Houses of Worship and Made in the Motor City, recalling iconic local brands. American Graduate Since 2012, DPTV has been active in public media’s campaign to prevent high school dropouts. Our activities this year included town hall meetings and video vignettes of successful mentors and teachers. Veterans Coming Home / Stories of Service DPTV is providing online resources and special events for military veterans moving to civilian life. FIRST in Michigan Robotics State Championship More than 10,000 people watched our all-‐day webcast of this high school engineering competition and more than 100,000 joined via social media. We aired an edited 30-‐minute program in May. WRCJ 90.9 FM Detroit’s only classical and jazz public radio station is a service of DPTV and Detroit Public Schools (DPS). This year, WRCJ broadcast concerts by the Detroit Symphony, Michigan Opera Theatre, Ann Arbor Symphony and others, as well as concerts by youth orchestras and programs produced with DPS students. WRCJ promotes music and arts education. 2015 LOCAL CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT
STORIES OF IMPACT
Helping Children “Be School Smart”
DPTV greatly expanded its education efforts this year by launching a new e-‐newsletter for parents and caregivers; creating a paperbook book, Pre-‐School U, of which nearly 2,000 copies have been distributed; and sharing PBS online resources for parents and educators at special events. The Station also launched a “digital badging” program with more than 20 cultural and educational community partners. Showing How Detroit Performs
Arts and Culture is a major initiative for Detroit Public TV as we believe “shared experiences in the arts” is essential for our region’s growth and success. Our Detroit Performs TV series and website encourage people of all ages and abilities to participate in the arts. Our radio broadcasts and live webcasts show a positive image of Detroit to the world.
Sharing Information and Insight More than 37,000 people watched over-‐the-‐air and online DPTV’s coverage of the 2015 Mackinac Policy conference and more than 100,000 joined in on social media. Since 2011, the Detroit Regional Chamber and DPTV have worked together to broaden access to the event, so that Michigan citizens can make informed decisions. DPTV’s coverage is widely picked up by other media outlets. 2015 LOCAL CONTENT AND SERVICE REPORT
STORIES OF IMPACT
New Year’s Eve with the DSO
A new tradition was born when DPTV and the Detroit Symphony Orchestra rang in 2015 live from Midtown Detroit. The two-‐hour broadcast featured the DSO and special guests with a mix of classical and pops conducted by Jeff Tyzik. The event returned to also ring in 2016. Reach in the Community:
One thousand people were in Orchestra Hall for the concert and party. Nearly 44,000 people watched the TV broadcast. The live stream had 3,000 viewers from all 50 states and 82 countries. On demand views have topped 3,000. Partnerships:
The Detroit Symphony and Detroit Public TV have a long association. DPTV was instrumental in establishing web streaming capability for the DSO which has enabled them to become “the most accessible orchestra on the planet.” Impact and Community Feedback:
This is another example of how Detroit Public TV can extend the reach of a specific event. DPTV has provided similar coverage for other organizations and events and, in each case, the event organizers are pleased with the audience reached and the positive feedback received. Comments from people around America who watched on the live stream. “A wonderful way to bring in the New Year. Thank you for presenting this on LiveStream.” “Applause, Applause to Detroit PBS from Montana.” “I’m watching from Columbus, Mississippi. Enjoying this very much!” Further, we take pride in showing show a high-‐
spirited, fun, positive image of Detroit to the rest of the world. We ARE showing the world how Detroit performs. 2015 Detroit Public Television
