MEMBERSHIP: $25 from September 1 - August 31. MESSAGE FROM THE SOCIETY PRESIDENT First of all I would like to wish everyone a very happy and restful summer. Even though it is holiday time, there are orchid events going on throughout this season, starting with Janet Johns’ open greenhouse visit, continuing with the Purdon Fen survey, Lynne and Santos’ annual barbecue, and the SOOS Summerfest on August 10. Rick has covered these in more detail in this newsletter. Read on. But now I wish to tell you a bit about a new program that the AOS has launched, a webinar series on assorted topics of interest to orchid growers. They are open to all. You do not have to be an AOS member to join the seminar. However you do have to register (free) as they are very popular and quickly fill up, and if you do not register the places go quickly to others. I attended the last one on the characteristics and naming of orchids led by Greg Allikas and it was very informative, very interesting and very well presented, and I learned some new and interesting things. The next one will be held on Thursday June 19 at 8:30 EDT and is on the new AOS awards program led by Greg Filter, the AOS IT expert. It is a good opportunity to learn more about how the system works and how AOS awards are recorded and used to research new awards. This one may be more technical than most but this is a series that it is well worth keeping track of as I hear there will be sessions coming on how to grow Dendrobiums, etc. Your Board is meeting next week to review the 2013-2014 financial statement being finalized as we speak by the Treasurer, Doug Vye, then it goes to the auditor for review, comes back to the Society with recommendations in August, is presented to the membership in September for comment and brought to the October meeting for final approval by the members. Happy summer and many blooms. Jean Hollebone At the May meeting, Michel Tremblay gave an excellent presentation on Phalaenopsis culture. There were many requests for a table created by Michel Tremblay for inducing flowering. Michel has very kindly provided André Couture with this table for him to share with us. Thank you very much, Michel, for your excellent presentation and sharing your information with us! It is very much appreciated. Pictures below were taken by Arlene Lang of Michel Tremblay. 2 MEMBERSHIP April Show 2014 Draw for a free 1 year membership from Sept. 2014 to Aug. 2015, four (4) winners: Marilyn Berube, Calin Buzatu, Wendy Graham and Richard Tremblay 10 New members joining in April and May: Ba Thong Huynh, Cana Balay, Lena Brabec, Sally Chan, Robert Gatien, Meena Landon-Brown, Andre Levesque, Ian Midgley, Pierre Richer and Eleanor Watson. Please bring your own chairs and let the cook know @ (613) 525 0164 or by EMAIL: [email protected] of the number of people that will be coming. ADDRESS: 20474 Concession 8, Green Valley, Ontario K0C 1L0. www.exoticorchidsplus.ca MAY MEETING: THANKS TO SHOW VOLUNTEERS The May meeting, being the last meeting before we broke for summer, was used as an opportunity to thank all our show volunteers. There was a special raffle table of items donated by Keith Fern (Fern Creations), Lynne Guimond and Santos Peixe (Exotic Orchids Plus) and other donors expressly for our show volunteers. It took a while to clear this raffle table. We gratefully thank all the raffle donors for their thoughtfulness, generosity and appreciation. Jean Hollebone had a delicious cake made for this event. There were other goodies and free beverages for everyone at the meeting. (Apologies to those who may have paid…signs requesting payment were inadvertently put up from habit as done each monthly meeting. The member who was filling in for Barbara who normally looks after the hospitality area was unaware that beverages and baked goods were free for this one time.) Once again, we thank everyone who pitched in to help with our annual show. th We will be returning to the Curling Rink at the Nepean Sportsplex for our 34 Annual Orchid Show and Sale in 2015. th The date for our show is April 18-19 , 2015. 4 SOCIETY PARTY NIGHT… On Friday, June 6th, thirty members of the OOS gathered at the Algonquin College’s Restaurant International to celebrate the end of the 2013/14 year with a four course meal. The evening was a great success with good food and lively conversation. There was a complimentary glass of wine thanks to an anonymous benefactor and several door prizes...a beautiful flower arrangement from Jean Hollebone won by Janet Duffield and a lovely cactus terrarium donated by Marlene Young and won by Ginette St-Laurent's husband. The table centerpieces were white dendrobiums provided by Jean and taken home by several of the guests. All in all, it was a delightful evening and enjoyed by all. A big “Thank You!” to all who contributed. The OOS Party Girls, Janet (Johns) and Helen (Nitschkie), are planning a Chinese dinner for sometime in October. Photos below of the event taken by Arlene Lang: Above, from top left: Co-Hostess Janet Johns awarding one of the door prizes; Co-Hostess Helen Nitschkie; a view of part of the dining room; Janet Duffield collecting the grand door prize; and, our evening's dessert. Thanks to Janet and Helen for organizing this function…a great idea! Thank you, Jean, for the numerous floral arrangements and thank you to our anonymous wine donor. PHOTO OF SHOW TABLE PLANT TAKEN BY LANNY MORRY From: Lanny Morry [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: May-18-14 6:54 PM Subject: My best photo of the day from the Ottawa Orchid Society meeting today Thought you might like to see a completely unretouched photo I shot today with my Nikon as I photographed and rephotographed the show table. I was pretty sure the setting on my camera on the first go round -- I was flirting between a flash and a no flash setting and trying a bit of both -- missed capturing this plant as well as I would have hoped, and sure enough I ended up with a pretty typical mid hue purple and not the colour your eye sees of the plant. But thank heavens, I returned to the flower before it was taken away, turned off the flash and got this. It is almost ethereal, it is completely unretouched except for being cropped, and I think it is my favourite photo of the day. I thought you might like to see it. (Photo is of Phalaenopsis Koda Twinkle 'Chocolate Drop'. ) Lanny (Editor’s note: Your photo is great, Lanny, as this Phal. is quite difficult to photograph. Thanks for sharing it with us.) 5 Anguloa uniflora – More nicknames This orchid is called swaddled babies. It is also called the tulip orchid. It is a small orchid genus and is closely related to Lycaste. This genus is found on the forest floor at high elevations from Venezuela, Colombia, Ecuador, Bolivia and Peru. The flowers of these orchids have a strong scent of cinnamon. Thank you, Catherine Loucks, for sharing this item with us. SPIDER ORCHID GROWS ON ROOF The following item appeared on theguardian.com, Thursday 22 May 2014 14.31 BST The early spider orchid was found growing on the grass roof at the Wessex Wastewater Treatment Works in Swanage, Dorset (UK) by ecologists who had been told by members of the public that another rare orchid had been spotted there last summer. After going to look for the bee orchid, staff at the Wessex Wastewater Treatment Works changed the mowing process on the roof and discovered the early spider orchid – a smaller and rarer species. The early spider orchid is protected by law, making it a crime to uproot, cut, sell or destroy it. Ellen McDouall, senior conservation ecologist at Wessex Water, said the limestone coastal cliffs around Swanage, on the Isle of Purbeck, were one of only three UK strongholds for the species, along with Kent and Suffolk. "The roof has only existed for 10 years and the orchids can take that long to flower. We don't know how this got on the roof - whether seed was in the soil or blown in from nearby. "Thankfully the roof of the sewage treatment works is under no particular operational pressure so we are hopeful that we will be able to actively manage the land for the benefit of the plant." A spokesman for Dorset Wildlife Trust said: "This is a lovely find as the early spider orchid is nationally scarce, with around 75% of the population being found in Purbeck, and the rest along the south coast to Kent and Suffolk. They are so special to Dorset that Dorset Wildlife Trust use it as part of our logo." (Thanks to Bryan Hollebone who originally passed this info to Jean and now it comes to you. To paraphrase William Shatner, “…orchids grow in the weirdest places.”) 6 OOS Show Table for MAY 18, 2014 CLASS Cattleya Alliance judged by André Lévesque Cypripedium Alliance Paphiopedilum judged by Michel Tremblay Phragmipedium judged by Michel Tremblay Oncidium Alliance judged by André Lévesque Dendrobium Alliance judged by André Lévesque Phalaenopsis/ Doritaenopsis judged by André Couture Vanda Alliance judged by Michel Tremblay PLACE st 1 nd 2 rd 3 rd 3 st 1 nd 2 nd 2 rd 3 NAME Rhyncattleanthe Shinfong Dawn Cattleya Irene Finney 'Spring's Best' AM/AOS Cattleya Christ Church 'Newberry Snow' HCC/AOS Rhyncattleanthe Shinfong Dawn Paphiopedilum William Ambler Paphiopedilum Lebaudyanum Paphiopedilum Ho Chi Minh (Paphiopedilum Shadow Magic x Paphiopedilum Nightshadow) x Paphiopedilum charlesworthii Paphiopedilum hirsutissimum Phragmipedium Les Dirouilles 'Red Tail' Phragmipedium Whirligig 'Excalibur' AM/AOS Phragmipedium Jersey Rossioglossum Rawdon Jester 'Great Bee' **Psychopsis papilio 'Mendenhall' FCC/AOS Dendrobium nobile 'Brazil' **Dendrobium Ise **Phalaenopsis Fangmei Sweet Phalaenopsis OX Firebird 'OX 1277' Phalaenopsis Tying Shin Baby Smile 'A08068' Phalaenopsis parishii Phalaenopsis No Name Papilionanda Amy Glynn Creekmur (Vanda tricolor var. suavis x Papilionanda Arjuna) OWNER Janet Johns Angèle Biljan Helen Nitschkie André Couture Janet Johns Angèle Biljan Helgi Fatovic Angèle Biljan nd Angraecum (magdalenae x praestans) Lynne Guimond & Santos Peixe st Cymbidium Autumn Green Marcel Carrière st Masdevallia Malcolm Adams 'Marsh Hollow' HCC/AOS Angèle Biljan st Zygostates alleniana Specklinia grobyi Platystele schmidtchenii Trichopilia hennisiana Bifrenaria harrisoniae Ancistrochilus rothschildianus Phalaenopsis No Name Lycaste aromatica x Lycaste cochleata Angèle Biljan Angèle Biljan Angèle Biljan Michael Barker Angèle Biljan Michael Barker Eleanor Watson Lynne Guimond & Santos Peixe Lynne Guimond & Santos Peixe HM st 1 nd 2 rd 3 st 1 nd 2 st 1 nd 2 st 1 nd 2 nd 2 rd 3 rd 3 st 1 2 Cymbidium judged by André Lévesque 1 Masdevallias judged by André Couture 1 Miniature judged by André Couture 1 nd 2 rd 3 st 1 nd 2 rd 3 st 1 st 1 Miscellaneous judged by André Couture Novice judged by André Couture Lycaste Alliance judged by André Couture Best in Show judged by A. SUMMERFEST PLANT PRE-ORDERS Pre-plants from H&R for delivery at Summerfest. Aloha from Hawaii to Attendees of the SOOS August 2014 Summer Orchid Event. Thank you for your gracious invitation for Roy Tokunaga to speak at your event. Here is the special Orchid Price List, specifically intended for pre-orders to be delivered in August 2014. Please use this special Canada list because it differs a little from our web site listing. Some items have been omitted due to shipping constraints and difficulty preparing them for shipping. (Canada requires bare-rooting our plants. We have omitted some bulky plants or those with huge root balls that are difficult to bare-root). However, our listing is still quite extensive. Roy also will be bringing for sale some plants from our nursery, which are not pre-orders. These plants will be priced differently from our pre-order list. For those of you who are not familiar with H&R Nurseries, we have a worldwide reputation for having many new and innovative orchid hybrids in various genera. We also stock many unusual, desirable and sometimes rare orchid species. Our growing conditions and more than 30 years of experience allow us to provide excellently grown plants. IMPORTANT PROCEDURES FOR PRE-ORDERS. Deadline for Orders: Orders should be received at H&R by July 10. All preorders should be sent be sent to Terry Kennedy (NOT H&R) at [email protected] . She will consolidate the orders and send them on to H&R. In order to meet the H&R deadline, Terry must have your order by July 8. The information needed is: 1. Please list the plants in the same order as on the price list. 2. List: Quantity of plants for each item; Code number for plant; Plant name as listed; Pot size; List price as noted on the price list. 3. Payment: once the availability of the plants of your order is confirmed you will be notified of the total cost of your order. Preorders are in US $ and due before you pick up your plants. Terry will collect the moneys and then pay H&R for the entire pre-order. 4. Purchases at Summerfest may be made in Canadian $. Please note: Jean Hollebone intends to go to Toronto to attend the SOOS Summerfest activities. She advises that you can order orchids ahead from H&R and she is offering to bring back prepaid pre-orders for OOS members. Members should place their order, as outlined with Terry Kennedy, and then drop Jean a note asking her to pick your order for you. Orders will be brought to Ottawa on Monday and available for pickup or delivery to OOS members on August 12. (If you have trouble opening the catalogue it is on the SOOS web site, http://www.soos.ca .) 12 MASTER ARTIST, JASON GAMRATH, A SEATTLE BASED MASTER GLASSBLOWER Michael Barker sent your editor an e-mail on this amazing master glassblower. To facilitate that first survey, a 4-hectare plot covering the orchid-rich area was subdivided into a grid of 15m × 15m squares. Those first survey results were used to help situate a boardwalk where most orchids grew and bloomed. Thus, visitors could and still can enjoy the flowers yet minimize visitor impact on the fen wetland environment. Conducting an orchid census requires little equipment but a lot of labour. For the past 20 years, the Ottawa and Kingston Orchid Societies have volunteered to count the orchids. Young and old, novice and experienced, all can participate in the conservation activity. We first installed permanent black ABS pipes as grid markers. The census has since been repeated at 5-year intervals, in 1999, 2004, and in 2009. We work together in teams of two or three to count all orchid stems in our assigned grid row including non-flowering stems and stems which have flowered, small seedlings, and fruits/capsules. We conduct the census in late July/early August, after the flowering is finished, when flowered stems remain visible and fruits are easily counted. A fen is a very special place and as such merits careful management. Our census information aids the Mississippi Valley Conservation Authority to plan future management. We want to keep the orchids safe so must take care not to damage the orchids but also be aware that trampling of companion plants such as pitcher plants must be avoided. We recommend that volunteers wear long sleeved shirts, long pants, a hat, and old running shoes/sneakers that protect feet but also can be air dried afterward. Insect repellent and sun screen are recommended. We cannot conserve orchids without knowledge and one such knowledge source is the census data. A very special thanks is extended to those who have participated in past surveys and to those who will consider taking part in the 2014 census, we look forward to your participation. Roy John (OOS Conservation) will be managing the volunteer roster. So far we have 22 people who have indicated their willingness to participate. These people have shown a preference for the end of July, but weather is always a factor. So we do not yet know for certain which day will be used for the census. We will e-mail and phone a few days before the event to let everyone know our choice. For your information, rare plants in this area include: Amelanchier arborea (Juneberry), Carex bromoides (Brome-like Sedge), Carex brunnescens (Brownish Sedge), Carex chordorrhiza (Cord Sedge), Carex livida (Lead-coloured Sedge), Lycopodiella inundata (Bog Club-moss), Moehringia lateriflora (Grove Sandwort), Platanthera dilatata (White Bog Orchid), Platanthera orbiculata (Round-leaved Orchid), Potentilla arguta (Tall Cinquefoil), Uvularia sessilifolia (Sessile-leaved Bellwort), and Viola nephrophylla (Northern Bog Violet). There are also 14 species rated as Sparse known from this site. For more information: http://www.lanarkflora.com/ Directions from Ottawa: Take 417 to the Almonte/March Road exit, turn left (over the highway) toward Almonte on #49. Continue through Almonte #49 becomes #16) until you reach 511 (T-junction)./ Turn left onto 511 and continue to Road 8 Watson's Corners Rd on right (signs to Purdon CA are seen beforehand also). Turn right onto Concession 8 to Purdon Conservation Area, Estimated 120 km or 1 hr 40 mins At the end of the day we will gather for a barbecue at Jean Hollebone’s cottage. Please let Roy John know if any more people wish to participate: [email protected] or 613 748 9963. (Editor’s note: Jean Hollebone reports that she was was up to Purdon Fen June 13, 2014. Orchids are all in tight bud, only a very few out but many in bud. Foliage is wonderful, bright green no deer/insect damage as in other years. Fen very, very wet and board walk very slippery. Pitcher plants at their peak, bright red, saw no other orchids but our tour was brief and although I looked quickly in the expected, usual spots I did not see any Spiranthes or Plantanthera. Even with hot weather I think it will be 10 days to 2 weeks before the majority are in bloom. Purdon staff were in doing clean up ...cutting away winter debris and tidying place up.) 15 Join us for the 4th Annual: INTERNATIONAL PHALAENOPSIS ALLIANCE “FOCUS ON PHALS” DAY Co-hosted by the North Eastern New York Orchid Society Sunday, September 14, 2014 50 West High Street, Ballston Spa, NY th In conjunction with the North Eastern New York Orchid Society, IPA is pleased to present its 4 Annual Speakers’ Day, “Focus on Phals”.
