Mission Co-op Appeal
This weekend Fr. Peter Mc Carthy, C.Ss.R., a missionary
from Brazil, will speak at all Masses about the Mission
of the Redemptorist Vice-Province of Fortaleza,
Brazil. Originally begun as an overseas mission of the
Redemptorist Province of Dublin, Ireland, it is now
being administered by native Brazilian Redemptorists.
Their work is to spread the Good News of the love of
God for all, especially for the poor, abandoned and
excluded in this region, which is the poorest in all of
Brazil.

The Protecting God’s Children awareness
program in prevention of child sexual abuse

moving us closer to God
Well the political conventions are over and one side is
saying "Believe Me" and the other side is saying "Trust
Me." I find it interesting that the two, belief and trust,
seem inseparable and indeed the Lord asks us to do both:
"Believe in Me" and "Trust in Me."
Much of our Holy Scripture has to do with belief (faith)
and trust. In truth everything we do and everything we
practice in living our stewardship lives should reflect our
faith and our trust in the Lord. Without those two elements
we could not be the kind of disciples Jesus wants us to be.
To be sure we would not be able to be the kind of good
stewards He expects.
This weekend's Gospel follows last week's parable of the
person who stored up a bountiful harvest for the future.
That Gospel ended with "But God said to him, ‘You fool,
this night your life will be demanded of you; and the things
you have prepared, to whom will they belong?’
Today's Gospel starts some 10 verses after last week's. In
these 10 verses are the great lessons of the birds and the
flowers not worrying about storing up for the future and
ends with, "How much more important are you than birds!"
(Lk 12:24) In these same 10 verses one sentence really
struck me, "If even the smallest things are beyond your
control, why are you anxious about the rest?" (Lk 12:26) This
reminded me of the Serenity Prayer that was so popular
years ago:
"God, grant me the serenity to accept the things
I cannot change,
courage to change the things I can,
and wisdom to know the difference."
I often thought I was in control of my life, even to the
point of making plans that went out several years. None
of them resembled reality after a few months.
It's been a slow process, but I am now a little more
comfortable in trusting God about the future. I'm not
saying that we shouldn't be prepared. We need prepare for
disasters like earthquakes and floods; but preparedness
is very different than making long range plans. Maybe
the Serenity Prayer says it all; we should all find peace,
we should be courageous about good causes and a little
wisdom always helps.

Please join Matthew 25 on Saturday, August 13, at
St. Lawrence of Brindisi to feed the homeless
and needy in the community. Volunteers meet
at O'Donnell Hall at 8:00am to prepare sandwich meals and
then carpool to distribute these meals at St. Lawrence.
Donations of clothing and hygiene and toiletry products
are desperately needed for this project (bath soap, shampoo,
conditioner, toothpaste, toothbrushes.)
Rockin' Readers SLB joins us to read to the small children
present with their parents. Volunteers are welcome to bring/
donate books and also read to the children.

The Knights of Columbus chapter in Manhattan Beach
supports the parishes of American Martyrs, Our Lady of
Guadalupe (OLG), St. Anthony and St. Andrew.
•We are one of the oldest and largest Catholic fraternal notfor-profit organizations in the world.
•We are men of faith, committed to protecting our families
through the Knights of Columbus Insurance program.
•We raise money through our annual Golf Tournament,
Casino Night and Lemonade booth.
•Through our fundraising efforts we support The STAR
House, Rancho San Antonio Boys House, House of Ruth
HOPE RENEWED and the St. Sebastian Sports Project.

California Bishops Announce Support for Prop. 62 to
End the Use of the Death Penalty - Part 2
“Capital punishment has repeatedly been shown to be
severely and irrevocably flawed in its application. In its
long – but absolutely necessary – process of ensuring an
innocent person is not put to death, we have seen many
accused persons being exonerated as new forms of forensic
investigation have enabled us to better scrutinize evidence.
The high cost of implementing the death penalty has
diverted resources from more constructive and beneficial
programs both for rehabilitation and restoration of victims
and offenders. Finally, repeated research has demonstrated
that the death penalty is applied inconsistently along racial,
economic and geographical lines.
For all these reasons, we must also oppose Proposition 66
which will expedite executions in California. The search
for a fair and humane execution process and protocol has
failed for decades. Any rush to streamline that process will
inevitably result in the execution of more innocent people.
Neither the proponents nor the opponents of the death
penalty wish this result.
As Catholic Bishops we are heartened by the growth of
Catholic lay movements aimed at ending the use of the
death penalty. The faithful have heard the words of St. Pope
John Paul II, Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI and Pope Francis

The spiritual life is like a journey, an unending one to eternal
life. Along the way we have need of a resting place. Our resting
place is in God through prayer. Our rest is God’s delight. God’s
delight is our blessing.
Please join us in prayer. We begin with a brief reading from
one of the saints or mystics of the Church, followed by two 20
minute periods of silent prayer, closing with the Lord’s prayer.
Newcomers are always welcome.

F aith E nrichment & P rayer G roups W hat is a L abyrinth ?
Labyrinth walking is an ancient practice used by many
different faiths for spiritual centering, contemplation and
prayer. Entering the serpentine path of a labyrinth, one
walks slowly while quieting their minds and focusing on a
spiritual question or prayer.
A labyrinth is not a maze.
It has only one path to the center and back out, described
by the term unicursal (one line). It has no blind alleys or
dead ends. The path twists and turns back on itself many
times before reaching the center. Once at the center, there
is only one way back out. In this way, it symbolizes a journey
to a predetermined destination (such as a pilgrimage to a
holy site), or the journey through life (from birth, to spiritual
awakening, to death.)
H ow D o I W alk a L abyrinth ?
There is no set ritual for walking a labyrinth, but there are
books and lectures to assist you in performing a labyrinth
walk. The basic advice is to enter the labyrinth slowly,
calming and clearing your mind. This may be done by
repeating a prayer or chant. Open your senses and focus
on the process of taking slow and deliberate steps. Bring to
mind a prayer or spiritual question to contemplate during
the walk to the center.
Reaching the center, pause to reflect, pray, listen for an
answer or for deeper revelation.
Now begin the return journey. Pray or reflect further.
Upon exiting, use further reflection, prayer, or journaling to
absorb the experience.

Before or after your Labyrinth experience, you are invited
to visit the Chapel and the "Upper Room" Spiritual Library
and check out a book (to take home).
When we pray, we join a steady stream of prayer that began more
than 2,000 years ago. With our world around us constantly in a
state of flux, there is a special grace in knowing there is a place
that is sacred and unchanging, a place where we can go to be
renewed in the love that is ours by way of God’s grace.
We all have gifts differing. There are many pathways to prayer.

Keep your kids safe in parks this summer
The weather outside is beautiful, and one of the best places to
play is the park. However, parents should start every visit to the
park with a discussion with their kids about safety plan.
Kids should know what to do if a stranger were to approach
them, and who to go to if they feel uncomfortable or threatened.
Public parks are a great place to play, but they are exposed to the
public. Having a safety plan in place can help parents and kids
