Directed by Sam Haft and Alexander Andrews Costume Designer Stephanie has been performing since the age of three. She found
her passion for dance at Dance Theatre Network which later grew
into a love for musical theatre. Stephanie is interested in all aspects
of the musical world, on stage and off, having received a Bachelor of
Music major Music Theatre at the Australian Institute of Music (AIM)
and also being a lighting/sound technician for her local musical
societies. She hopes in the near future to make her mark in the
professional industry, and then pass on her knowledge to eager
young dreamers like herself.
‘The flesh has it’s own spirit’
Frank Wedekind, Spring Awakening: A Children’s Tragedy, 1906
Spring Awakening is a fable without a moral; in its place it presents a series of unanswered questions that leave
the audience in a state of wonder and doubt long after the final curtain. Under the layers of rock music, the piece
can be likened to Greek tragedy, with its exaggeration of human emotion, folly and dissection of growing up. It
borrows from classic theatrical conventions; the choir of boys and girls, who serve the story in commenting on
the action, extending characters’ thoughts and foreshadowing what is yet to come.
There is a sense of urgency and vitality within the piece, with moments that shift in time and place. While the
piece is set in 1890 Germany, when in song, the boys and girls transform into contemporary rock singers,
breaking out of the bourgeois German province and into an alt-rock concert. With the use of contemporary rock
music, the audience has access to the private and timeless world of the characters. The songs, without lyrics
that serve to further the storyline, stand still and savour the moment, reminding audiences of classic musical
theatre conventions. Much like early musical theatre, the musical form of Spring Awakening is not dictated by
the content, in that the music is not married to the context of which the story has been drawn.
The characters that inhibit the piece are not presented as fully fleshed out human beings; instead they are
painted in broad strokes of thoughts and feelings. The characters exist within a world of repression, in which
boys and girls are struck for giving the wrong answers, yet denied vital lessons about life. The adults remain
silent about love, sex and what it is to grow up. The seeds of the children’s tragedy are sewn by one wilful act
of silence – a mother refusing to talk honestly to her daughter about marital sex. There is emptiness within the
piece, with the characters in a perpetual state of waiting and searching for answers.

I’ve always been a fan of this musical, and I’m always excited by young artists taking on great material. Every
good show, as far as my experience goes, has something unique and original to say. Spring Awakening is one
such original. Wedekind’s play, the springboard for this musical, is ‘A Children’s Tragedy’. A play designed to
confront it’s original audience with what we all know, but rarely speak of.
Astra-lia Opal England
How we all discovered our own sexuality is something often reserved for private banter, shared between ourselves and only those who we feel comfortable enough to discuss it with. Some tales are full of humour, some
adventure, some disappointment and some are just dark. It is a pivotal part of all of our lives, however, and one
that warrants discussion, if we’re brave and open enough to discuss it.

Going back to the importance of originality, for sexual awakening to be shown as starkly as possible, what
better place to locate the story than amongst the repressed world of the Prussian. You need the darkest black
background for white to shine brightest, right?. So why not take it one step further: Give them microphones! Let
them sing a ballsy, rocking score that Ben Folds would be proud of. Get these children of a Prussian revolution
to start a riot with their voices and bodies!
It doesn’t get more fun than that!
Enjoy!
