Records Broken at 2010 WNFR
Well it’s over, and again all too soon. Every year, we wait anxiously, adjust our cable packages and internet connections to keep up
with the marathon 10 day National Finals Rodeo and then in what
seems like only moments after it starts, it is in the record books and
the process starts all over again. This year, Sherry Cervi was a near
lock to become a world champion, but with Vegas, you just never
know. Cervi came out in the end a big winner and the World Champion for the 3rd time in her career. As always, there were many
twists and turns along the way.
It all started off with an unexpected bang as Lisa Lockhart and
her amazing backup horse An Oakie With Cash lit up the Thomas
and Mack with a 13.84 in the first round. Lockhart expected to ride
Fast An Gold during the NFR, but an accident earlier in the week
kept him too sore to compete. Lockhart pulled out her “backup”
horse, An Oakie With Cash, and lit up the first rounds of the 2010
Wrangler National Finals.
It quickly became apparent that this “backup” horse that carried
Lockhart to big wins through the fall (including the Canadian Finals
and Badlands Circuit Finals) was bound and determined to push
his way to number 1 on the Lockhart roster. After a quick start
winnning over $27k in the first two rounds, she carried her momentum through the NFR ending up 3rd in the average and 4th in the
World for the year wtih NFR earnings addings up to $107,425.
The other surprise of the 1st Round was Sherry Cervi and MP
Meter My Hay (Stingray) going for a self described “trail ride” and
being out of the money for the night. After Stingray inspected
the fence on the first run, she locked in and went to digging in and
working for the remainder of the NFR. No time for “trail rides”
when you are after a world title!
Also, in the early rounds Kelli Tolbert and RF Firefly (Cleo)
showed they were a force to be reckoned with. After running fast
(13.94) but tipping in the first round, Kelli and Cleo won the 2nd
Round and kept clocking strong all week to the tune of $59,879
worth of NFR earnings, pretty impressive numbers for a first time
qualifying team.
Meanwhile, Jill Moody and TR Dashing Badger (Dolly) were
quietly running good numbers just as they did in 2008 when they
won the NFR Average title. Interestingly, in 2008 Jill and Dolly were
chasing runaway winners Lindsay Sears and Martha (Sugar Moon
Express) and this year she was chasing another runaway winner in
Cervi and Stingray. Just like in 2008, Moody went about her work
one barrel at a time.
Round 3 was the beginning of the end for the competition as
Cervi and Stingray simply ran them off their feet with a time of
13.65 and started the march towards an arena record and a world
championship.

NOTES: Everybody loves a good horse trade and a little horsetrading secured Marne Loosenort and owner Danny Kingins the Victory
Farms raised, VF Hi N Famous. Right away, Loosenort she knew
she had a nice horse, but would she end the team’s drought in the
slot races? The Loosenort/Kingins team was experiencing a drought
at the BFA but the team kept a positive attitude and readied themselves for the run at the big bucks Friday night. VF Hi N Famous
had been making nice runs in the juvenile but not clocking like expected and just wasn’t getting ahold of the ground. Could she get it
together for the Slot Race? Well, the faith Kingins and the rest of the
team showed paid off with an amazing run and $100,000 check. The
Loosenort team and long-time owner Danny Kingins will share a
$100,000 Christmas that reminds us the importance of perseverance.

Fame and Mulberry Canyon Moon and this carried on through the
NFR. Fantasia Fame ran fast times but had a hard time keeping
the barrels up, but Mulberry Canyon Moon showed off her stuff
winning three go round victories, the first coming in Round 4. In
Round 4 an amazing 10 runs were under 14 seconds, a feat that may
take a while to repeat!
Lockhart and An Oakie With Cash kept on their roll in Round 5
running the fastest time of the finals up to that point of 13.62. The
buckskin dynamo comes from an interesting combination of bloodlines. By Beibers Oakie on the top, who was a reiner, calf horse and
all around performer and out of a Judge Cash mare, An Oakie With
Cash was definitely bred to perform. Not only is he a standout barrel horse, but he is a former Snaffle Bit Futurity winner!
The Judge Cash blood kept rolling along in the 6th Round when
Brenda Mays and her Judge Cash son, Judge Buy Cash, won their
first round at the NFR in 36 rounds. Meanwhile, Moody, Cervi,
and Lockhart were just placing along maintaining their places in the
average. Also, unusually quiet Brittany Pozzi was starting to warm
up, placing for the first time of the 2010 finals in Round 6.
Round 7 marked the second round win of the finals for Cervi
and Stingray but was just a warmup for what was to come in Round
8. After Brandie Halls executed a nearly perfect pattern in a time
of 13.52 during the 2006 NFR, many considered the record nearly
unbreakable, that was before Stingray. As Cervi and Stingray flew
into the arena on top of the ground in Round 8 and nailed the first
barrel, everyone knew the time would be fast but would it be fast
enough to put the pair in the record book? On to the second barrel,
again perfect, on to the third, nearly flawless, Stingray gets faster
every stride as they fly out of the arena, a quick peak up at the
clock...13.49 New Arena Record!
Not only did the arena record catapult them to the round win,
but also jumped them past Moody and also Lockhart, who hit a
barrel to drop to third in the average. Although, it was almost math-
ematically impossible at this point for anyone else to win the world,
the duel for the average title between Moody and Cervi was in full
swing.
Meadors and Mulberry Canyon Moon won their second round in
Round 9, meanwhile Moody and Dolly were faster than Cervi and
Stingray to move back to first in the average with only 3 barrels for
each of them left on Saturday night.
Round 10 marked the resurgence of Pozzi and Yeah Hes Firen as
they tied with Meadors and Mulberry Canyon Moon for the round
win. Moody came into the final round with a measley 0.02 lead in
the average over Cervi. She was first to go, one clean barrel, two
clean barrels, three clean barrels and a quick trip to the finish line,
resulting in a time of 13.84.
Now, it was time to see if Cervi would not only win the world
and set an arena record but if she would also leave Las Vegas the
average champion. Cervi and Stingray blazed into the arena, one
clean barrel, two clean barrels, a slight bobble on the third and “oh
no” it’s down, the average goes to Moody and her great mount
Dolly.
A year after pneumonia nearly claimed Dolly’s life, Moody and
Dolly have claimed their 2nd average title in 3 years of competing
at the NFR. Not only did they claim the average title, they set a new
average record of 138.26 on 10 runs and earned over $133,000 on
the way. So, in their last 20 runs at the NFR, Moody and Dolly have
turned 60 clean barrels and won nearly $240,000, that is an average
of $12,000 per run, or about $4,000 per barrel!
In the end, Cervi and Stingray earned the title they fought so hard
for all year long and as icing on the cake added an arena record that
will take some work to break.
It is Cervi’s third World Title (Her first in 1995, and second in
1999). The home raised MP Meter My Hay is right out of Cervi’s
parents’ (Mel & Wendy Potter) breeding program. Stingray is by

their stud, PC Frenchmans Hayday (Sun Frost) and out of the 3/4
sister (Miss Meter Jet) to Cervi’s former barrel mount Hawk.
A couple interesting facts about Stingray and Cervi, the team has
earned in excess of $266,000 over the last 20 runs at the NFR, that
means every time Stingray run through the gates she earns Cervi
about $13,300 and each time she turns a barrel in Vegas she picks
up $4,433! I would bet Cervi just wants to run every rodeo in Vegas!
Over the last two years, the pair has earned just short of
$520,000, which accelerated Cervi into becoming the All-Time
Leading Earner in the sport of Barrel Racing. So for the year of
2010, Cervi wins the World Title (her 3rd), set an arena record at
the NFR of 13.49, and became the All-Time Leading Earner in the
sport. Not bad for one year. How will Cervi celebrate? With a little
time in the Arizona sun riding her next crop of future rodeo stars.
During her “time off ” she also plans to get MP A Man With Roses
(George) a little more consistent to take some of the load off of
Stingray as she goes into 2011.
Another year comes to an end with the NFR presenting us with
a mix of familiar names and a few new stars to watch for in 2011.
From beginning to end 2010 was the year of Sherry Cervi as she
returns to championship form with her homegrown MP Meter My
Hay. What does 2011 hold, who knows, but it’ll sure be fun to find
out.

NOTES: Sarah Zaleski had always wanted to ride a Dash Ta Fame
and with Hall Of Famer she got that chance. Hall Of Famer came
through the Bo Hill program (as did 3 out of the top 17 in the average and 3 out of the top 10 in the second go of the juvenile) before
heading to Zaleski. Zaleski shipped Hall Of Famer off to working
cowhorse trainer Russell Littlefield to ready Hall Of Famer for the
barrels. Zaleski brought along her prospect slowly and with the help
of Littlefield off and on throughout the year, Hall Of Famer was
ready to fire on all cylinders for the Juvenile Futurity and the Slot
Race. In the slot race, Zaleski tipped a barrel and then cruised out of
the arena, a costly barrel as they would have been in line for a big
check that would have added to their impressive run through the 3
year old ranks at the BFA.

Future Fortunes Wraps Up Milestone Year

Future Fortunes, Inc., capped off its million-dollar payoff
milestone by awarding $98,500 at the Barrel Futurities of America’s
World Championship Barrel Racing Futurity, held Dec. 8-11 in
Oklahoma City, Okla.
To be eligible for $51,000 of this lucrative purse, owners needed
to simply show up with a Future Fortunes horse, a copy of their
registration papers and note their eligibility on the entry form. Once
a horse is paid in full to the program, for a modest $150 if paid in
full as a weanling, they’re eligible for the futurity and open bonus
money for life!
Only horses entered in the $47,500 Fortunes Round paid an entry
fee.
Future Fortunes BFA Champion
“It’s the best $150 I’ve ever spent,” said Shona Dufurrena of the
money she spent paying Blue Moon Fling (“BB”) into the Future
Fortunes program as a weanling. Ridden by Michelle McLeod,
Whitesboro, Texas, BB took top honors in the Future Fortunes
Bonus Money at the BFA World Futurity.
The 4-year-old daughter of A Streak Of Fling out of a Nonstop
Jet granddaughter Adalena Moon Jet, by The Reign Master, an NFR
calf horse, earned $8,640 with $7,776 going to Dufurrena as the
owner and breeder and $864 going to Brian and Lisa Fulton, the
owners of A Streak Of Fling.
“She ran great,” said McLeod, who just started riding the mare
this fall. “She ran three 15.5s. I’m so proud of her for being so
consistent. It was neat to win the Future Fortunes. Those awards
are really nice. It’s a really great program.”
BB’s efforts earned Dufurrena and McLeod a jacket, horse sheet
and saddle pad.
Ironically, they almost missed out on the Future Fortunes bonus
because they had considered scratching from the second go since
BB had made the futurity finals on her first run. McLeod was con-

vinced that BB would get faster on their second run, so she wanted
to run her again to better their two-run average potential. After
Dufurrena looked at the Future Fortunes rules online, she was glad
McLeod decided to run her again.
Dufurrena, who makes her living in the cutting horse industry—
her husband Ed trains cutters, grew up barrel racing and started
BB with the help of her husband and daughter Rieta, 17. But, the
demands of the cutting training business kept her from running BB
herself.

“The best thing was finding a good jockey,” said the Gainesville,
Texas, resident. “I’m super happy with Michelle. I can’t say enough
good things about her.”
McLeod, a California native who started training barrel horses
fulltime when she moved to Texas five years ago, can’t say enough
good things about BB.
“She’s a super nice mare,” said McLeod. “They had her really,
really broke. All I had to do was try to keep her happy. I’m lucky to
have been on her.”
Fortunes Round Champion
Missjbrunningwithfire (“Honey”), owned by Joe and Dee Lynn
Braman, Refugio, Texas, and ridden by Kassie Mowry, collected
the $25,000 first-place check in the $47,500 Fortunes Round. The
4-year-old mare, which will be sporting a new Future Fortunes trophy sheet, is by Fire Water Flit out of KK Runner, by Shawne Bug.
Vickie Adams, owner of Future Fortunes Legend sire Fire Water
Flit, will also receive a check worth $2,500.
The Fortunes Round championship is determined by the best of
two runs from the BFA’s qualifying rounds. Only 50 slot holders
were able to nominate horses for the Fortunes Round and their
horses had to be nominated in fall of their 3-year-old year.
Bred by Robert and Cristal Sherill, Honey started her training
with Mowry at the start of her 3-year-old year. She didn’t see futurity action until the spring of her futurity year due to her late start.
“She’s really just turned it on here lately,” said Dee Lynn Braman. “She’s always had bad luck before, like someone would set a
barrel up to knock her out of a final. Kassie’s done a great job with
her. She’s worked through a lot of things with her and switched
her to the left. Honey’s just one of those late bloomers that Kassie
wouldn’t give up on when I was ready to bring her home.”
Braman said she plans to let Mowry derby the mare next year as
well as introduce her to some rodeos.
JB Quarters Horses Amateur Champion
Terry Vogel claimed the JB Quarter Horses trophy saddle for the
leading amateur rider in the futurity with Fiery Contender. Vogel, a
human resources, information technology and marketing director
for Lake Texas Jet Center, also earned a $1,500 bonus as well as a
jacket and halter.
Bred by Vickie Adams, Fiery Contender is a 4-year-old mare by
Title Contender out of Fiery Tequila by Fire Water Flit.
“She’s big, pretty and really fast,” said Vogel, who hangs her hat
in Gainesville, Texas.
Vogel said she and her husband Lee, an equine dentist, really
make a point to purchase Future Fortunes horses.
“Everything we own is Future Fortunes,” she said. “It’s a really
good program. Any time there is a Future Fortunes bonus we
always seem to get a little money.
“We really do always try to buy Future Fortunes horses. We were
interested in two horses in the sale (at Oklahoma City), but they
weren’t Future Fortunes. One could have been, but it hadn’t been
nominated and had to be paid in for $1,500. So, we passed. We
really want to thank the stallion owners and breeders that take the
time and spend the money to make their horses Future Fortunes
eligible.”
Vogel is already set for next year’s Future Fortunes purses. She
has her futurity colt for next year paid into the lucrative Fortunes
Round at the 2011 BFA World, and she’ll look to pick up open
bonus money at various events around the country with her older
Future Fortunes horses.
Elite Trailers Rookie Champion
Kelly Ficklin, a speech therapist from Onarga, Ill., was the highest-placing, first-time competitor at the BFA World. She captured
the Rookie Championship aboard Wayne Ruel’s 4-year-old gelding
DHR Whatta Money Man (“Dinero”).
Bred by Delvin and Sheryl Buhr, Dinero is by their stallion Oh
Whatta Boy out of Me And Red Money, by Future Fortunes Legend sire On The Money Red. Ruel, a corn and bean farmer from
Kawkakee, Ill., purchased the gelding as a 2-year-old at the 2008
BFA Select Sale for $8,500, and sent him to Ficklin’s father Russ to
train.
“Her dad’s an excellent trainer,” said Ruel. “I’ve had horses with
them for about five years. Funny thing is, when I bought this horse,
I liked him, but Russ, her momma and Kelly really didn’t care for
him.”
The younger Ficklin started riding Dinero last fall. The duo
placed at two smaller futurities during the year and finished second
in the Sho Me Slot Futurity, but they were truly a force to be reckoned with at the larger three-day jackpots around the Midwest.
“I knew he would do well if he made his typical runs,” said
Ficklin. Dinero made the BFA Futurity Finals and finished third in
the Future Fortunes Bonus Money with $5,373 in earnings. Of that
total, Ruel collected $3,591 and the Buhrs received $594 on behalf
of Oh Whatta Boy and $1,188 as the breeders of Dinero.
“I really proud of her,” said Ruel of his jockey. “She did really
well. Kelly’s a good rider.”
Although speech therapy has been her chosen profession for the
past nine years, Ficklin grew up barrel racing and has occasionally
jockeyed horses for her dad in the past. Her mother, Janet, is former Great Lakes Circuit Finals qualifier in the WPRA and her aunt,
Judy Arnold, is a former National Finals Rodeo qualifier.
For the Rookie Championship, Ficklin received a $1,000 bonus, a

buckle, a jacket and a halter.
Owner/Breeder/Rider Champion & Champion Broodmare
Curt and Danette Potter’s late, great mare Carols Girl was named
leading broodmare, thanks to the efforts of her last foal, Carols
Last Wager, who collected an amazing $9,650 in Future Fortunes
Bonus Money throughout 2010. The Potters, Cecil, Ohio, received
a crystal bowl in honor of their mare and a horse sheet and halter
for being the owner/breeder/rider champion at the BFA World
Futurity.
Carols Girl, a daughter of Rare Jet out of Sleet And Snow, by
Texas Dancer, was a multiple futurity finalist, including a reserve
championship at the Ardmore Futurity, Congress Sweepstakes finalist, as well as a rodeo winner in the Women’s Professional Rodeo
Association and International Professional Rodeo Association. She
qualified Danette Potter for the International Finals Rodeo and won
money at that prestigious event. The Potters lost the great mare
shortly after Carols Last Wager (“Lexus”) was born.
“She’s always been very special,” said Curt Potter of Lexus, a
4-year-old mare. “Her momma died when she was eight weeks old.
She’s always been a spoiled brat. We got a miniature pony to keep
her company and that pony stayed with her until she was a 3-yearold. When we took her away from the pony, it was like weaning her
from her mother!”
By the Potters’ late stallion, Barred From Wagering, Carols Last
Wager topped the Future Fortunes bonus at the Southern Rebel
Futurity and earned additional bonuses at the Lance Graves Pro
Classic, Old Fort Days Futurity and BFA World.
The Potters have had a rough year in 2010. During the Old Fort
Days Futurity, their nephew, “who was like their kid,” was killed in
a farming accident, and later on November 11, Curt had a heart attack.
Lexus has been one of the bright spots during the year. Despite
some soundness issues, the gritty mare was a solid check-earner
throughout the season.
Champion Breeder
Charles and Nita Brock, Talhihina, Okla., were the leading breeders, thanks to the two Future Fortunes money earners bred in their
names, Danita Design and VF Cat Daddy. The two horses, full
siblings thanks to embryo transfer, earned $9,413 in bonus money
with the Brocks’ breeders’ share being $1,883.
Both horses are by Designer Red and out of Bandits Best Gal,
by Flit Bar Bandit. Danita Design, a mare who ran for the Brocks,
earned $8,113. VF Cat Daddy, a gelding born to a recipient mare,
earned $1,300 for Curt and Danette Potter, Cecil, Ohio. VF Cat
Daddy was a foal share with Danny Ray of Victory Farms, who
owned Designer Red.
Bandits Best Gal (“Besty”) was a former futurity horse for the
Brocks, who received a crystal bowl for their mare’s achievement.
Charles Brock described the mare as “a holy terror” and “the fastest thing” he had ever ridden. An injury put her in the broodmare
band. She’s currently in foal to Stratospheric.
“Nita and I were at a futurity in Phoenix, Ariz., when she says,
‘We needed to make a pit stop to pick up the black mare I bought,’”
laughed Charles Brock, who serves as BFA President. “She had
bought the mare behind my back. She’s a full sister to Barbie Sue
Flit, and Nita always like that mare. So, she bought Besty from Sissy
Novak.”
Danita Design was campaigned by Kay Young for the Brocks.
She took the top spot in the Future Fortunes Bonus Money at the
Old Fort Days Futurity.
“Kay has done an excellent job with her,” added Brock.
With two grand barrel racers, Peyton and Parker Glenn, to keep
mounted, Danita will likely become part of their string of horses.

Perennial leading barrel horse sire Frenchmans Guy, owned by

Bill and Deb Myers of St. Onge, S.D., was the leading Future Fortunes sire in 2010 with seven get amassing $20,877 in total bonus
earnings. Frenchmans Guy’s share of that total was nearly $2,100.
The Myers were awarded a silver halter for Frenchmans Guy’s
achievement.
Frenchies Cash Cutie, a 4-year-old out of Haulin Lotsacash, by
Holland Ease, was Frenchmans Guy’s leading Future Fortunes
earner with $6,159 in total bonus money from the Beth Cooper Memorial, Old Fort Days and Fizz Bomb futurities. Owned and ridden
by Hallie Melvin, Frenchies Cash Cutie was bred by Don Schnoor.
Melvin collected $4,311 and Schnoor’s breeder’s share was $1,232.
Other money earners for Frenchmans Guy include Guys Bigtime Streker ($5,195 in total bonus money), Doittoem Lil Martha
($3,430), PT Frenchman ($2,365), Frenchmans Signature ($2,000),

NOTES: SX Dr Peacharita and Brian Wheeler have won many
titles across the country but recognition in the futurity/derby world
had eluded them leading up to the BFA Derby. The derby finals
stacked up as a whos who in the barrel racing world, with Troy
Crumrine, Cody Bauserman, and Latricia Duke among others all
lined up with good horses and ready to go for broke. Fourteen year
old Brian Wheeler may have felt overwhelmed, but he had his horse
tuned up and he knew SX Dr Peacharita was ready for the challenge.
With the fastest time of the finals, the young team leapfrogged over
the competition to the Derby title and finally earned the recognition
they deserve. Like many of the top mares of today, SX Dr Peacharita
will begin her second career of producing embryos while still competing, with her going to the services of top barrel sire Dash Ta Fame
this year.

and pressing toward the mark of the high calling of God! High calling....what our wonderful Father gave us when He sent Jesus, the #1
gift ever given or will be given.
Who else would die so we don’t have to? Who else would pay the
high cost, with interest, of every sin that you and I will commit?
Who else loves you enough to place their blessing on you so you
will never want for any good thing? Who else bore stripes on their
back to ensure that healing is ours? No matter who I can think of
that loves me, not one of them has ever done all these things for
me...Jesus did.
He’s our perfect gift. He’s free. There are no strings attached to
