As the “Horse Capital of the World,” the Bluegrass Region has no shortage of
horse-related activities – from horse farm tours to a day at the races to elegant
equestrian events. You are sure to be an “honorary horseman” before your
visit to the area ends.
There’s nothing like starting the morning by catching a glimpse of the
powerful Thoroughbred horses warming up at sunrise and then enjoying
Breakfast with the Works early Saturday morning during the Race Meet at
historic Keeneland Racecourse. Keeneland’s tradition and charm transcend
the average Thoroughbred racing experience, with people from around the
world visiting Lexington to enjoy the Race Meets in April and October, as well
as the various sales throughout the year.

In northern Fayette County, you’ll find the
Kentucky Horse Park, which is home to
the International Museum of the Horse,
American Saddlebred Museum, Hall of
Champions and the Parade of Breeds, as
well as various horse shows, and the Rolex
Kentucky Three-Day Event. Visitors can
also enjoy Standardbred racing at The Red
Mile – the second-oldest harness track in
the world.

Even if you aren’t into horses, there are
plenty of other things to do in Lexington
that are fun and won’t break your budget.
Kentucky, and more specifically the Bluegrass, has a long tradition when it comes
to the production of Bourbon, wines, and
beer. The area is loaded with breweries,
distilleries, and wineries, where visitors
can view the production process first-hand.
In fact, CNN International recently named
the Kentucky Bourbon Trail a “Top 10
Classic American Experience.”
There is no shortage of spectator sports
in the area, enabling folks to cheer, cheer,
cheer for the home team. Whether it’s great
Lexington Legends baseball action at
Whitaker Bank Ballpark, University of
Kentucky football or basketball, the powerful
racing at Kentucky Speedway in Sparta, or
just up the road in Cincinnati with Major
League Baseball’s Cincinnati Reds and the
NFL’s Cincinnati Bengals.
With so much to see and do in the
Bluegrass, you’ll most certainly have to
extend your visit, or maybe you’ll decide
to stay and never want to leave.

community of Lexington. Hauck (pronounced “howk”) is a
biochemist with a background in business. He brought his
companies, Orthopeutics LP and Intralink-Spine Inc., from
Austin to Lexington in August 2010.
CEO Hauck and his team of medical specialists produce
nonsurgical treatments for degenerative disc disease, in an
effort to eliminate the need for spinal fusion surgery. “The
best disc you have, the best tendon, is the one God gave
you,” he said.
Orthopeutics was a Phase II winner in the Small Business
Innovation Research (SBIR) program. “Kentucky has figured
out that in biotech, two of 10 companies are successful in
commercializing a product, but eight of 10 SBIR Phase II
winners make it to commercialization,” Hauck said.
“Kentucky goes after these winners.”
Orthopeutics/Intralink-Spine started with human technology.
By the spring of 2011, in response to a request from the
equine industry, Hauck formed another company, Equinext,
to work with technology for soft-fusion injuries to tendons
in horses.
“We feel fortunate to have hit the trifecta in Lexington,”
Hauck said, referring to his companies’ initial technology,
being commercialized in a local industry and having
manufacturing capabilities to produce the product at
Coldstream Research Campus. He also likes another
threesome of Central Kentucky: bourbon, biotech and
horses. “I grew up on cutting horses,” he said.

A native of Tucson, Hauck has lived in Arizona, California
and Texas. He earned a B.A. in biochemistry at the
University of Arizona and is completing his master’s degree
in science and technology commercialization, as well as an
MBA, from Northeastern University in Boston. Arriving in
Kentucky, the first thing he noticed about the area is how
green it is. “I enjoy watching the leaves change in the fall,”
he said. He and his wife, Barbie, and two of their four
children chose to live in the Beaumont area. Their two
oldest are in California.

“There are a lot of places that make promises before you get
there,” Hauck said. “Once you get there the follow-up is not
very good. What’s unique about Lexington is we still have
people calling us from the Governor’s office, the University
of Kentucky and Commerce Lexington. Kentucky is not just
a shiny button.”

If it seems like there are a plethora of churches and synagogues in and around Lexington,
there are. In fact, a community report by New Century Lexington, as well as a poll of
residents, cited the area’s numerous religious opportunities as one of its strengths. With
over 250 churches serving nearly 38 different denominations in the area, newcomers to the
area will have no trouble finding religious opportunities of a particular type and/or size that
suits their needs. From large congregations into the thousands to smaller churches serving
less than 100 people, the choices are numerous.
Area churches offer everything from community support activities, church planting,
childcare services, and missionary experiences. When deciding on which church to attend,
ask friends, family members, or people within the community where they worship and why.
Don’t hesitate to visit several to determine the right fit for you. Many area churches have
web sites that contain their doctrinal statements and beliefs, and some even provide their
sermons on-line or broadcast worship services on local television.

Whether you’re in the mood for great musicals, national and international
museum exhibits, charming children’s productions, outdoor performances,
or touring Broadway plays, Lexington hosts a range of arts and cultural
opportunities that fit many interests and budgets.
Leading the way for the advancement of the arts locally is LexArts, Lexington’s
cultural development, advocacy and fundraising organization. As both the area
Arts Council and Arts Fund, LexArts provides a wide range of programs and
services designed to integrate the arts into our daily lives. LexArts operates
two facilities in downtown Lexington — ArtsPlace and the Downtown Arts
Center — providing high quality performance space, galleries, rehearsal
space and office space for nonprofit arts organizations.
Meanwhile, the Lexington Art League
(LAL) – Lexington’s oldest and largest visual
arts organization – presents original, creative
and accessible programs, with a reputation
for thought-provoking content, that illuminate
the role of visual art in contemporary life. LAL
presents the American Founders Bank Arts
Fair at Woodland Park and the Fifth Third
Bank Fourth Friday from January through
October, and is home to its flagship gallery
in the historic Loudoun House.
Theater buffs have several well-known facilities
from which to choose to watch performances,
including the Lexington Opera House, which
was constructed in 1887, restored in 1975, and
went through a refurbishment within the last
few years, ArtsPlace, the Lexington Children’s
Theatre in Victorian Square, the Singletary
Center for the Arts on the University of
Kentucky campus, and the Downtown Arts
Center located at 141 East Main Street.
A venue that recently reclaimed its historic
past is the Lyric Theatre and Cultural Arts
Center, which celebrated its one-year anniversary of re-opening in October 2011. Between
1948 and 1963, the Lyric Theatre was a thriving
entertainment centerpiece for Lexington’s
African-American families. Originally built as a
movie house, it quickly became a cultural icon.
Today, the new $6 million facility more than
doubles the size of the Lyric to 29,000 square
feet, adding a 540-seat theater.
If it’s museums that you’re into, then Lexington
has a great selection from which to choose.
From the Headley-Whitney Museum, which
houses an eclectic collection of bibelots,
jeweled boxes, Asian porcelain, and extravagant
tapestries, to the University of Kentucky Art
Museum, Explorium of Lexington, and the
Lexington History Museum.

Whether it’s skateboarding, swimming or jogging, Lexington’s Parks and Recreation has
a lot to offer. Currently, there are more than 100 parks consisting of more than 4,000
acres in Lexington. The parks system includes athletics, after school programs, aquatics, community centers, cultural arts, day camps, dog runs, equestrian, fitness trails,
golf, gymnasium, natural areas, playgrounds, rental facilities, senior adult programs,
special events, therapeutic recreation and open spaces for passive recreation. Some of
the larger parks in and around Lexington are Shillito Park (off Reynolds Road), Douglass
Park (off Georgetown Street), Castlewood Park (on Castlewood Drive), Jacobson Park (off

Raven Run Nature Sanctuary
McConnell Springs Nature Park
Raven Run is a unique, 734-acre nature
sanctuary dedicated to preserving the natural beauty of the Kentucky River Palisades
and early Kentucky history. Over 10 miles
of hiking trails provide access to streams,
meadows and woodlands characteristic
of the area. Numerous 19th century remnants of early settlers, as well as over 600
species of plants, allow visitors to become
acquainted with and appreciate the natural
world. Raven Run also accommodates
over 200 species of birds throughout the
year. Hours of operation are 9 a.m. to 5
p.m., with trails closing at 4:30 p.m. Call

McConnell Springs is a 26-acre natural
pocket within an industrial area. Also an
important historic site, McConnell Springs
was settled in 1775 by William McConnell
and is heralded as the site where Lexington was named. Two miles of trails wander
around the sinking springs, vegetation,
stone fences, and vestiges of historical
buildings. McConnell Springs boasts more
than 130 species of plants and numerous
species of urban wildlife that reside at

Woodland Skatepark
Opened in September 1999, the Woodland Skate Park is approximately
12,000 square feet and features a variety of ramps, platforms, bowls and
pipes. It offers a great skating experience for beginners while at the same
time, challenges the most experienced skater. This facility is open to the
public year-round at no charge. Hours of operation: The skatepark is
open during Woodland Park hours until 11 p.m.

Driver’s Licenses
Driver Insurance
Local driver’s licenses can be applied for or renewed at one of two locations, at 162 East Main Street, 2nd Floor, in downtown Lexington or at 2519
Regency Road, Suite 103. Hours and contact numbers follow. Persons with
out-of-state licenses must apply for a Kentucky license and pass both written
and eye exams. In special cases, a road test may be required. Persons with
no license must apply and pass written and eye tests to obtain a learner’s
permit, which costs $12. After a waiting period of six calendar months, a
road test can be taken. Once passed, the driver is then issued a Kentucky
driver’s license at a cost of $10. The cost is $10 if the individual is 16-years
old and is prorated until age 21. The license is valid for four years. Duplicate
licenses are $12 each. Renewal of a driver’s license costs $20. A combination
driver and motorcycle license is also available for $30 from the Circuit .

Drivers in Fayette County are required to carry liability insurance. New .
residents must obtain Kentucky insurance before registering their vehicle. .
If you are purchasing a vehicle, you must obtain Kentucky liability insurance
naming you as the insured for that vehicle before titling and registering. .
The insurance must be Commonwealth of Kentucky proof of insurance. .
Out of state insurance will not be accepted. The only exception is for Military
personnel. The registered owner/lessee must be named as the insured. The
vehicle identification number (VIN) and named insured on the insurance
proof must match the title. An insurance binder is acceptable for 30 days
from the effective date. The binder must state that the coverage is “bound.”
The insurance proof must contain the five digit NAIC number and must .
describe the policy type as “PL” for personal or “CL” for commercial. For

Those moving into Kentucky should obtain a Kentucky license plate for their
vehicle within 15 days after establishing residency. Plates can be obtained
from the Fayette County Clerk’s office (Room 108). Your vehicle must be
made available for inspection when obtaining plates. Registration renewal
is required annually. A six percent (6%) motor vehicle usage tax is levied
upon the “retail price” of vehicles registered for the first time in Kentucky
and upon registration resulting when the vehicle is subsequently transferred.

VOTER REGISTRATION
To vote, a person must be a U.S. citizen, a Kentucky resident, and at least 18
years of age before the next General Election. In Kentucky, the potential voter
must be registered in the county where they live for 28 days before the date
of the next election. Since January 1995, Kentucky citizens can register to.
vote at the time of vehicle registration or driver’s license renewal under .
the “Motor-Voter” Program. With a proper state registration form, voter .

a license is $40. $25 of this fee goes to the LFUCG Spay & Neuter Fund. Dogs and cats must wear their license and rabies tags at all times. Assistance dogs are
