Light Our Way
Why Do Catholics Cross Their Head, Lips, and Heart at Mass?
During Mass, we make a little cross on our head, lips, and heart, because these outward gestures made with our bodies are
pointing to an inward prayer that is happening in our hearts.
When the Gospel is about to be read, the priest says: 'A Reading from the Gospel according to St____.' The congregation then
responds, 'Glory to You Oh Lord,' making a small cross with their thumb over their forehead, lips, and chest.
Remember, the cross itself is a sign of redemption in and through Jesus Christ. When we make this sign of the cross, in any
form, it's an outward act to profess our inward faith in the Trinity. This sign declares that, through our baptism, we belong to God.
The reason for making a cross during this period of the Mass is to highlight the importance of the Word of God we are about to
hear. St. Paul taught us, 'For the Word of God is living and active, sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing to the division of
soul and spirit, of joints and marrow, and discerning the thoughts and intentions of the heart' (Hebrews 4:12).
In the outward sign of crossing our forehead, lips, and heart, we are asking that the Word of God to pierce our mind, lips,
and hearts.
We cross our forehead so that the Word of God may be in our thoughts and purify our minds. We cross our lips so that our
speech may be holy and incline us to share the Gospel with others. And we cross our hearts to invite God to strengthen our love for
Him and others. All of this is so that we might know, proclaim, and love Jesus Christ all the more.
So, next time you’re at Mass and the Gospel is about to be proclaimed pray that 'The Word of God be ever in my mind,
proclaimed by my lips, and pierce my heart leading me to deeper communion with you, Jesus.'

40th Anniversary—Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe National Shrine
Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe Comes to St. Pius X Church the movement continues….
In late 1954, a small group of priests, religious and lay people in France formed
the movement, “The Work of Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe.” They
began by distributing around the world copies of Mere’s painting and the special
prayer she had composed, the imprimatur of bishops in many languages and
directions for a beautiful home enthronement ceremony.
Bishop Romeo Blanchette, Diocese of Joliet, when giving his imprimatur, stated
“I gladly give my permission in honor of her lady.” Also included in the letter of
permission to Msgr. Wagner was the Bishop’s message that “devotion to Mary,
mother of God, leads to increased devotion to her Divine Son. Love of Mary
increases our love for her Divine son, Jesus our Savior. By honoring the mother
we are not taking away from the honor to the Son. By honoring the Son, we get
to appreciate the mother more. Jesus and Mary were joined together in the work of our salvation, and this work is still being
perfected through our lives.”
With the approval of Bishop Blanchette and the support of Msgr. Wagner, pastor of St. Pius X parish,
our church, on May 31, 1974 became the first in the United States to formally establish a shrine under
the title Mary Immaculate Queen of the Universe, thus designating it as the national shrine.
The main shrine and central focal point of the Movement is in Bois-le-Roi, a small village just south
of Paris. Many young people have joined the Fraternity of MIQ as consecrated brothers and sisters
called to a life consecrated in love, in the evangelical counsels of poverty, chastity and obedience.
Those seeking a closer relationship with the Mother of God and her Divine Son, have their homes
enthroned to the Sacred Heart of Jesus and His Mother. Regular visitations across the world from
members of the Fraternity in France unite the global family of Messengers of Mary Immaculate
Queen from many countries including France, Ireland, Great Britain, Argentina, Lebanon, Africa and
the United States.

PIEDRAS VIVAS
aprendieron a hacerlo. Hoy Pedro utiliza esa misma estrategia
para hablar a sus hermanos. Les dice, y nos dice: “Vosotros sois
PIEDRAS VIVAS”.
ella, no quedará defraudado”.

COMMUNITY NEWS
West Suburban Faith-Based Peace Coalition
Joyful Again Ministry
In May we are showing the documentary "Freedom Riders,"
directed by Stanley Nelson and produced by Firelight Media
for PBS. From May until November 1961, more than 400 black
and white Americans risked their lives deliberately violating
Jim Crow laws by traveling together on buses and trains as they
journeyed through the Deep South. The Freedom Rides were
launched to capture the attention of the Kennedy
administration. The Interstate Commerce Commission, after
five months of fighting, finally ended the segregation in bus
and rail stations that had been in place for generations. The film
serves as an educational and advocacy tool in order to support
young people who are mobilizing around contemporary social
issues such as immigrant rights, youth violence, and
environmental issues.
