Dear Friends of The Well,
The physical space we know as The Well was created and offered its first program in
March 2000, under the direction of Sr. Marlene Schemmel and Judy Maher. A spiritual
foundation preceded that beginning. It was built upon the vision of Thomas Berry. This vision
was carried forth by the passion of Sr. Pat Bergen, Sr. Kathy Sherman and Sr. Janet Bolger.
The result has been a place of hospitality, peace and balance that invites all into sacred
unity with God, one another and all of creation. It is also a place of challenge; the challenge
to expand our minds and heart and consciousness, the challenge to participate in the
invitation of wholemaking; the challenge to create a future for One and All.
We are pleased to announce a new class on becoming wholemakers that begins this
January and meets once per month. The class is based on a new DVD lecture series
featuring the theology of Ilia Delio and produced in collaboration with Ilia and The Well.
In recent years, children have begun to touch and enhance us and the world through their
participation in our Artists of Peace retreat and the books produced from that experience.
Our next book, Walk With Me, which was created along with students from Nigeria, will be
launched at a Mass and Reception on April 19. Please mark
your calendars to join us. … And as long as you have your
calendar out, please reserve March 15 for our annual
St. Patrick’s Day Mass and Silent Auction. It is a fun-filled
event and your presence and support truly help to shape
and guarantee our future!
As we plan our calendar each semester we plan it with the
hope and prayer that you will be touched, shaped and
enhanced - that you will experience the Sacred within and
among each other. This semester is no exception. Please
peruse the offerings and take special note of our 7th Annual
Summer Institute, “A Consciousness for Our Time” featuring Thomas Berry’s companions,
Gail Worcelo, Carolyn Toben and Miriam MacGillis. An Early Bird Rate is in effect until
February 20, 2015.

Science invites us to understand
the universe as one unbroken
whole. Out of this infinite hidden
wholeness all that is emerges.
How does this idea inform our
understanding of God? Teilhard de
Chardin suggested that evolution is a process of
Christogenesis or the birthing of a Christified cosmos. What
is Christogenesis? The call of the Christ is to become as
Jesus was a wholemaker: one who participates in a vision
where All is ONE. Join us for an exploration of theologian Ilia
Delio’s ground breaking work. We will watch and break open
clips of Ilia’s recent workshop at The Well, “Living in a
Christified Universe”.

From Dinosaurs to Star Trek: The
Evolution of Hope for a Threatened
Planet

Some scientists speculate that an asteroid striking Earth
ended the 160 million year reign of the dinosaurs. Today
some say human-caused environmental destruction is the
lead cause of Earth’s present great
extinction. Do we have any better
chance at changing the course of
history than the dinosaurs? The
answer to that question lies in the
path of conscious evolution – a
very personal journey from despair
to hope that each of us can and
must take. Together, we will share
stories of our learnings on the journey thus far.

Patricia Bombard, BVM, holds a Doctor of Ministry from the
Chicago Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts degree in
Religious Studies from Mundelein College, Chicago, IL. She
o#ers workshops, retreats and days of reflection on emerging

On A Clear Winter’s Eve, A Circle of
Kindred Spirits Consider Slowing Time

Barbara Mahany, the author of Slowing Time: Seeing the
Sacred Outside Your Kitchen Door, explores with us Winter,
the Season of Deepening. The long dark winter weeks, not
long after the Nativity and then Epiphany, invite us to draw
deeper inside this Ordinary Time, to begin anew, to spark a
winter’s dream, to marvel in the quietude that the new year
brings. Blessings and lessons abound in these snowblanketed weeks, as we commit again to the dream of all we
can be. Together we will partake of that and sip something
warm besides.

Barbara is an author and freelance journalist in Chicago, who
writes these days about stumbling on the sacred amid the
cacophony of the modern-day domestic melee. She was a
reporter and feature writer at the Chicago Tribune for nearly
30 years, and before that a pediatric oncology nurse at
Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Slowing Time:
Seeing the Sacred Outside Your Kitchen Door, which has
been called “a field guide into the depths of your holiest
hours,” is Mahany’s first book. Publishers Weekly picked it as
one of the Top 10 religion books for 2014, fall crop. She is
married to the Tribune’s Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture
critic, Blair Kamin, and together they’ve raised their two sons
in both their Catholic and Jewish traditions and faiths.

practice in a variety of forms to cultivate well-being.

your intention to live more mindfully. Pause to reflect with
others and learn methods for practicing mindfulness. Take

Integrating Body, Mind and Spirit
Through Moving Meditation: Essence
QiGong

QiGong is an ancient form of
exercise that has its roots in the
observation of the interplay of
stillness and movement. Energy in
its state of health is in movement,
like a flowing river that purifies itself
through its own movement.
QiGong in general works to encourage the natural flow of
energy through the body’s energy systems, organs, and
tissues. QiGong has been found to have a tremendously
positive and healing e#ect for physical, emotional, mental,
and spiritual health, growth and well-being. The practice
o#ers a way to synchronize one’s spirit, mind, and body in a
way that allows a person to experience the joys of health,
balance and self-awareness.
This workshop is a pre-requisite to the five week QiGong
classes. Attending at least three of the ongoing
Qigong practice classes is highly recommended.
Need a refresher? Past participants of this QiGong
workshop may attend for $35.
COST: $75 plus $30 for CD and book.

Tim Sperduto has been studying QiGong for the last ten
years and teaching for the past seven years. His study of
QiGong brought him to China in 2004 at the age of 18 with
Professor Chen Hui Xian, his QiGong teacher. In China Tim
studied with several QiGong masters as well as with
Chinese medical doctors and professors in various fields,
including quantum physics and Asian philosophy.

music, story and scripture as well as time for personal
reflection and sharing.

This program will provide an
overview into the God of the
Universe, the God “within,” the God
who is closer to us than we might
dare to imagine. The story of
creation will come alive and bring
new theological understanding and meaning into your life.
The wilderness takes many forms:
sandy wasteland, wooded forests,
wide open seas, mountain tops.
Those who venture there may be
searching for God, for guidance, for silence and solitude.
Women of the 4th century left their homes in Syria, Egypt and
Palestine to discover God; to deepen their prayer and to also
ask for guidance. They took responsibility for their own
spirituality, for their way of being. The desert mothers will be
our guides on how we can integrate the landscape of our
inner wilderness with our lived experiences inviting us to this
wisdom. We will explore during our time together where our
inner wilderness calls and listen to what it has to teach us.

relationship. Our very physiology,
social well-being, and the quality of
our emotional life is dependent
upon attachment relationships.
Our earliest primary attachments
shape our sense of self and other, AND all relationships
throughout life influence our ability to say “yes” to life.
This workshop is grounded within a Christian theological lens
of the Trinity, which represents “God in Community.” Thus,
our lives are birthed from the Loving Relationships within the
Godhead and for Loving Relationships here on earth. Our
focus will be on teaching, conversation, contemplation, and
experiential exercises which integrate the sciences of love
(yes, there is a science of love, limited as it may be within
the greater mystery of Love) Attachment Theory and the
neurosciences.
This workshop is both didactic and experiential. Participants
will learn and explore:
• The origins and characteristics of secure and insecure
attachment styles
• The dynamics of one’s personal attachments responses
• How one’s attachment style may have informed one’s
calling and life choices
• How one may facilitate secure attachment responses with
self and others
• Ways in which one’s attachment responses get projected
into our images of God
• Ways to deconstruct distortions which impede our ability
to receive and to give love

expressions of our Oneness
through the ARTS. The core value
of this project is the belief that the
arts are a powerful agent for

and all creation. “Artists of UNITY” will gather young people
ages 11-13 from across the Chicagoland area for a weeklong camp. The participants will represent cultural and racial
diversity. They will engage in a variety of workshops (music,
poetry, theatre, dance, etc.) which will be taught and
facilitated by professionals. Children will also engage in
Conversation Circles to learn the value of listening,
community building and conflict resolution. They will be
encouraged to share what is important to them and then be
guided to use their talents to create art that helps the world

each day related to our experience

communal “lectio divina” experience of prayer, and an
evening meeting for viewing selected videos related to
the daily themes. The rhythm of the retreat will be quiet
and gentle with time to contemplate God’s beauty and
munificence in creation, as well as our own beauty as
God’s beloved ones. Participants are encouraged to
bring their artwork, poetry, personal psalms or prayers,
and some favorite narratives of their ministry and family
experiences as sources for reflecting on the mystery of
our creating, healing, and transforming God.

Mary Ellen Sheehan is a native Detroiter who in 1956
entered the Immaculate Heart of Mary Congregation of
Monroe, Michigan. She received a doctorate in
theology (STD) in 1975 from the Catholic University of
Louvain in Belgium. Since 1978, she has been
teaching theology at St. Michael’s College of the
Toronto School of Theology. She o#ers lectures,
workshops, and retreats that draw on the
contemplative character of theology to extend and
deepen our experience of God and our lives of

Cancellation and Refund Policy
As a courtesy to the planners, advance notice of your intent not to attend is appreciated. All cancellations
must be received at least 48 business hours before the start of the event to be eligible for a refund.
Cancellations must be received either in writing, by email ([email protected]) or by phone
(708.482.5048). No refunds will be made for requests received after that time, and registration refunds
may be subject to cancellation fee. Program deposits where material costs are incurred are not eligible
for refunds. Refunds will be issued as a credit towards future program registrations. If a program is
cancelled by The Well, a full refund to all registrants will be provided in the same form payment was
made.
CATECHIST HOURS
In cooperation with the Office of Catholic Schools, The Well Spirituality Center offers programs that provide catechist
renewal hours for the Archdiocese of Chicago. Teachers are expected to stay 45 minutes after a program to discuss the
information and integrate what was learned for application into a classroom environment. This time is reflected in the number
of catechist renewal hours earned for each program. Call 708-482-5048 or email [email protected] with questions or to

Faculties, parish staffs, prayer groups, youth groups, catechists, and social groups are invited to schedule a full or half day
for a customized presentation. The program can be offered at The Well Spirituality Center or in another setting. If you see

The Well Spirituality Center is a regional Center for the telling of the Universe Story where people of all faiths and cultures are
invited to recognize and affirm our communion with God and all creation; to experience an atmospher for spiritual, physical
and emotional wholeness and to participate in the sacred process of healing and caring for Earth and her people.
Directions to The Well
The Well is easily accessed from I-55, I-290 and I-294:
—Going North or South on I-55, connect with I-294 North. Exit East on Ogden Avenue.
—From I-88, connect with I-294 South. Exit East on Ogden Avenue.
—On I-290 heading West from Chicago, follow the signs and take I-294 South.
Exit East on Ogden Avenue.
—From I-294 exit, East on Ogden Avenue.
Scholarships
The Well strives to welcome all to our programming. If the cost of attending a program is
out of reach for you, please call Bridget Sperduto, Executive Director, at 708-482-5039.
Scholarship money is available with no application process. Please do not hesitate to
request assistance.
Conference Center and Room Rental
Rooms are available at The Well for individuals or small groups. Days of prayer and reflection,
meetings, workshops, etc., may be arranged by calling 708-482-1279. You will find a link
with photos of our conference center facilities and rental fees on the Home page of our
website, www.csjthewell.org.
Libraries and Private Study
We invite the public to enjoy and borrow books from our two libraries. The Spiritearth Library
is one of the best eco-theology libraries in the heartland. The General Spirituality Library
contains over 400 books by classic and modern spiritual writers.
Joseph’s Corner Gift Shop and Bookstore
Ministry of the Arts offers an assortment of books, music, artwork,and gift items in this
beautiful shop. Program participants from The Well receive a 10% discount on the day
of the program. Store hours are Monday - Friday 9 am - 5 pm, and Saturday 9 am - 3 pm.
