The sense of the Sacred is at the heart of it all.” —Thomas Berry Dear Friends of The Well, The physical space we know as The Well was created and offered its first program in March 2000, under the direction of Sr. Marlene Schemmel and Judy Maher. A spiritual foundation preceded that beginning. It was built upon the vision of Thomas Berry. This vision was carried forth by the passion of Sr. Pat Bergen, Sr. Kathy Sherman and Sr. Janet Bolger. The result has been a place of hospitality, peace and balance that invites all into sacred unity with God, one another and all of creation. It is also a place of challenge; the challenge to expand our minds and heart and consciousness, the challenge to participate in the invitation of wholemaking; the challenge to create a future for One and All. We are pleased to announce a new class on becoming wholemakers that begins this January and meets once per month. The class is based on a new DVD lecture series featuring the theology of Ilia Delio and produced in collaboration with Ilia and The Well. In recent years, children have begun to touch and enhance us and the world through their participation in our Artists of Peace retreat and the books produced from that experience. Our next book, Walk With Me, which was created along with students from Nigeria, will be launched at a Mass and Reception on April 19. Please mark your calendars to join us. … And as long as you have your calendar out, please reserve March 15 for our annual St. Patrick’s Day Mass and Silent Auction. It is a fun-filled event and your presence and support truly help to shape and guarantee our future! As we plan our calendar each semester we plan it with the hope and prayer that you will be touched, shaped and enhanced - that you will experience the Sacred within and among each other. This semester is no exception. Please peruse the offerings and take special note of our 7th Annual Summer Institute, “A Consciousness for Our Time” featuring Thomas Berry’s companions, Gail Worcelo, Carolyn Toben and Miriam MacGillis. An Early Bird Rate is in effect until February 20, 2015. Over the past 15 years, each of you has touched, shaped and enhanced The Well. Please join us in shaping it “well” into the future! Together, we may create a future for One and All! Blessings, Bridget The Well Spirituality Center is creating a future for ONE and All. We are committed to strengthening, healing, and calling forth the inherent wholeness of Earth, our human community and all creation. We honor the reality of Spirit and cultivate unitive consciousness through reflective experiences, education, conversation, the arts, prayer and ritual. Our context for exploring this oneness with God and all creation is the unfolding Story of the Universe. Cost: Free-will o#ering Becoming “Wholemakers” Thursdays 9:30-Noon Jan 15; Feb 19; Mar 19; Apr 16 Facilitator: Bridget Sperduto Science invites us to understand the universe as one unbroken whole. Out of this infinite hidden wholeness all that is emerges. How does this idea inform our understanding of God? Teilhard de Chardin suggested that evolution is a process of Christogenesis or the birthing of a Christified cosmos. What is Christogenesis? The call of the Christ is to become as Jesus was a wholemaker: one who participates in a vision where All is ONE. Join us for an exploration of theologian Ilia Delio’s ground breaking work. We will watch and break open clips of Ilia’s recent workshop at The Well, “Living in a Christified Universe”. Cost: $100 or $25/session 5 From Dinosaurs to Star Trek: The Evolution of Hope for a Threatened Planet Saturday 10-Noon Jan 24 Facilitator: Pat Bombard, BVM Some scientists speculate that an asteroid striking Earth ended the 160 million year reign of the dinosaurs. Today some say human-caused environmental destruction is the lead cause of Earth’s present great extinction. Do we have any better chance at changing the course of history than the dinosaurs? The answer to that question lies in the path of conscious evolution – a very personal journey from despair to hope that each of us can and must take. Together, we will share stories of our learnings on the journey thus far. Cost: $35 Patricia Bombard, BVM, holds a Doctor of Ministry from the Chicago Theological Seminary and a Master of Arts degree in Religious Studies from Mundelein College, Chicago, IL. She o#ers workshops, retreats and days of reflection on emerging trends in spirituality and leadership. On A Clear Winter’s Eve, A Circle of Kindred Spirits Consider Slowing Time Monday 7-9 pm Jan 26 Facilitator: Barbara Mahany Barbara Mahany, the author of Slowing Time: Seeing the Sacred Outside Your Kitchen Door, explores with us Winter, the Season of Deepening. The long dark winter weeks, not long after the Nativity and then Epiphany, invite us to draw deeper inside this Ordinary Time, to begin anew, to spark a winter’s dream, to marvel in the quietude that the new year brings. Blessings and lessons abound in these snowblanketed weeks, as we commit again to the dream of all we can be. Together we will partake of that and sip something warm besides. Cost: $10. Books are available to purchase in our gift shop, Joseph’s Corner, and the night of the program. Barbara is an author and freelance journalist in Chicago, who writes these days about stumbling on the sacred amid the cacophony of the modern-day domestic melee. She was a reporter and feature writer at the Chicago Tribune for nearly 30 years, and before that a pediatric oncology nurse at Children’s Memorial Hospital in Chicago. Slowing Time: Seeing the Sacred Outside Your Kitchen Door, which has been called “a field guide into the depths of your holiest hours,” is Mahany’s first book. Publishers Weekly picked it as one of the Top 10 religion books for 2014, fall crop. She is married to the Tribune’s Pulitzer Prize-winning architecture critic, Blair Kamin, and together they’ve raised their two sons in both their Catholic and Jewish traditions and faiths. 6 PROGRAMS Animas Circle Wednesdays 5-7 pm Jan 28; Feb 25; Mar 25; Apr 22; May 27 Animated by soul and spirit, by the breath of life, the Animas Circle of women discovers and explores what is new and coming to birth on the edges of evolution on this planet at this time. Energy in its state of health is in movement, like a flowing river that purifies itself through its own movement. QiGong in general works to encourage the natural flow of energy through the body’s energy systems, organs, and tissues. QiGong has been found to have a tremendously positive and healing e#ect for physical, emotional, mental, and spiritual health, growth and well-being. The practice o#ers a way to synchronize one’s spirit, mind, and body in a way that allows a person to experience the joys of health, balance and self-awareness. This workshop is a pre-requisite to the five week QiGong classes. Attending at least three of the ongoing Qigong practice classes is highly recommended. Need a refresher? Past participants of this QiGong workshop may attend for $35. COST: $75 plus $30 for CD and book. Please bring a brown bag lunch. Tim Sperduto has been studying QiGong for the last ten years and teaching for the past seven years. His study of QiGong brought him to China in 2004 at the age of 18 with Professor Chen Hui Xian, his QiGong teacher. In China Tim studied with several QiGong masters as well as with Chinese medical doctors and professors in various fields, including quantum physics and Asian philosophy. The story of creation will come alive and bring new theological understanding and meaning into your life. The wilderness takes many forms: sandy wasteland, wooded forests, wide open seas, mountain tops. Those who venture there may be searching for God, for guidance, for silence and solitude. Women of the 4th century left their homes in Syria, Egypt and Palestine to discover God; to deepen their prayer and to also ask for guidance. They took responsibility for their own spirituality, for their way of being. The desert mothers will be our guides on how we can integrate the landscape of our inner wilderness with our lived experiences inviting us to this wisdom. We will explore during our time together where our inner wilderness calls and listen to what it has to teach us. Running the Paschal Mystery: Are you a Cheerleader or a Participant? Saturday 9 - 1 pm Mar 7 Facilitator: Terry Nelson Johnson Consciously or unconsciously, most Catholics think of themselves as ‘Cheerleaders for Jesus’ when it comes to the Paschal Mystery – The passing over from Death to Life. One gets the impression that Jesus did the Paschal Mystery for us a really, really long time ago and every year during Holy Week we gather to remember the story and thank him . . . again. Ah, but is it possible, that with respect to the Paschal Mystery, the passing over from death to life, Jesus Went First – and now, today, he invites us into the Mystery with him? What if the Paschal Mystery is ‘the rhythm of Love,’ and to the extent that we have the guts to participate in this Mystery, Jesus exquisitely companions us into New Life! Cost: $40 Terry Nelson Johnson’s art is the written and spoken word. His passion for narrative theology expresses the yearning of 2,000 years to connect our life stories with The Story of the birth, life, death, and resurrection of Jesus. Living the Risen Christ Saturday 9-Noon Apr 18 Facilitator: Jack Shea Last week was Easter Sunday. So Easter is over…or is it? The Gospel stories of the Risen Lord are not meant to be memories of something that happened in the past or assurances of a post-death existence in the future. They are revelations of a way of thinking and acting that are meant to give life and love into the present. But in order for that revelation to be received, we must ponder the symbols of the stories and test out their invitations in our experience. During our morning gathering, that is precisely what we intend to do. Cost: $40 Jack Shea is a theologian and storyteller who lectures nationally and internationally on storytelling in world religions, faith-based health care and contemporary spirituality. “The challenge is to nurture a culture…seeking to imbue an instinct for social engagement. That is to say, it’s not you or me, but we.” —Nicholas Kristof & Sheryl WuDunn “Hope is like a path in the countryside. Originally there is nothing – but as people walk this way again and again, a path appears.” —Lu Xun This is a series of five discussions dedicated to contemplative discerning. Evolution, solidarity, social engagement, creativity, love/ compassion, hope, “spirituality of we” are some platforms. Every conversation is New Testament rooted. Joy of the Gospel inspiration animates every conversation. • “Reality is Broken” Portion of Barbara Marx Hubbard DVD – Call From the Future • “God is a Verb” Almost 100 years of Theory of Relativity, “Time is More Important than Place/Space.” Pope Francis • Age of Anthropocene; Awakening of the “sense of man” (new epiphany). Pierre Teilhard de Chardin • “What’s Love Got to Do With It?” Tina Turner. “Love Must Win Out.” Oscar Romero “Love Me. That’s All I Ask of You” Susan Boyle • Meditation, Contemplation, Creativity. Our very physiology, social well-being, and the quality of our emotional life is dependent upon attachment relationships. Our earliest primary attachments shape our sense of self and other, AND all relationships throughout life influence our ability to say “yes” to life. This workshop is grounded within a Christian theological lens of the Trinity, which represents “God in Community.” Thus, our lives are birthed from the Loving Relationships within the Godhead and for Loving Relationships here on earth. Our focus will be on teaching, conversation, contemplation, and experiential exercises which integrate the sciences of love (yes, there is a science of love, limited as it may be within the greater mystery of Love) Attachment Theory and the neurosciences. This workshop is both didactic and experiential. Participants will learn and explore: • The origins and characteristics of secure and insecure attachment styles • The dynamics of one’s personal attachments responses • How one’s attachment style may have informed one’s calling and life choices • How one may facilitate secure attachment responses with self and others • Ways in which one’s attachment responses get projected into our images of God • Ways to deconstruct distortions which impede our ability to receive and to give love We will learn why how we treat one another matters! Cost: $395 (includes overnights and meals) Commuters: $295 (includes Sunday dinner) Charlotte Dillon, PH. D., M.P.S. is a practicing clinical psychologist; Char holds graduate degrees from Northwestern University in Counseling Psychology and the Institute of Pastoral Studies at Loyola University, Chicago.
