Yishun Junior College student Deenah Haja Maidin
was proud of receiving the study grant. It would be
used for her school expenses such as pocket money
and printing school notes. She hopes to enter the
Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in National
University of Singapore (NUS) and eventually
become an English teacher. “I am very glad that
Deenah receive the study grant. Her sister has been
receiving it for the past few years and I am happy
that Deenah finally got the opportunity. My four
children have received the grant for the past five
years thanks to SPWU, PSA and NTUC U Care,”
said Deenah’s mother Julaiha.

For second-time recipient Daniel Ng, the award
would be a great help to defray study fees, food
and transport. He said that without the grant, he
would have had to take up a part-time job to cover
daily expenses. “I am thankful that the study
award frees me from the burden of supporting my
studies so that I can concentrate on my studies
and do well,” the NUS first-year Environmental
Engineering student said.
SPWU celebrates with its members for the well deserving award recipients.

Xin Chào Vietnam!
S
ome 56 SPWU members jetted off to Ho Chi Minh,
Vietnam for a five-day Educational Tour on 11 May 2015.
The educational tour was organised to promote stronger
ties and bonding among active union members, and also
a good opportunity to identify potential union leaders.
During the five days, members experienced the sights
and sounds of Vietnam while they visited the Presidential
Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Old Saigon Post office,
a lacquerware factory and a war museum. To get further
understanding about Vietnam’s history, they explored the
elaborate network of Cu Chi Tunnels used by the guerrillas
during the Vietnam War. On top of that, they also went
on a full day trip to Mekong Delta where they took a boat
ride along the narrow waterways overhung with dense
vegetation. The members were in high spirits throughout
the whole trip and look forward to another enriching and
exciting educational tour!

Healthy
Snacks for
Fund
S
PWU and Port Officers’ Union (POU) once again
joined forces for a worthy cause. They set up a stall
selling dried fruits and nuts at the PSA Charity Food Fair
2015. Healthy grains, fruits and nuts such as chia seeds,
cranberries, raisins, figs, walnuts, cashews were on
display and proved to be a hit among patrons. Through the
spirit of generosity from PSA staff across all levels and
divisions, who flocked to the PSA Club on 4 September
2015 for the annual food fair, SPWU and POU raised
$7,519 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore
(MDAS). The event continues to be a great opportunity for
SPWU and POU to make a difference in the lives of the
less privileged.
