Supporting Children in Realising their Dreams SPWU Study Awards Ceremony 2015 A t the SPWU Study Awards 2015 ceremony, held at the PSA Club on 20 August, some 30 students were awarded a total sum of $31,600. PSA Regional CEO Southeast Asia Tan Puay Hin, union officials and management staff joined proud family members in applauding a total of three Pre-University, 13 Polytechnics and 14 University students for their hard work and achievement. Guest-of-Honour SPWU Advisor and MP for Jurong GRC Ang Wei Neng said: “We hope the financial awards will have an impact on the recipients so that they can eventually give back to society.” Surely, the study awards are a welcome relief for SPWU member and helps their children in realising their dreams. 2 SPWU Portworker E Portworker: Portworker goes online for the next issue. Look out for it in your email! Yishun Junior College student Deenah Haja Maidin was proud of receiving the study grant. It would be used for her school expenses such as pocket money and printing school notes. She hopes to enter the Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences in National University of Singapore (NUS) and eventually become an English teacher. “I am very glad that Deenah receive the study grant. Her sister has been receiving it for the past few years and I am happy that Deenah finally got the opportunity. My four children have received the grant for the past five years thanks to SPWU, PSA and NTUC U Care,” said Deenah’s mother Julaiha. She was happy to receive the grant and said that this is a source of motivation for her to pursue her dream. Daniel Ng with his father Ng Wee Keong and family For second-time recipient Daniel Ng, the award would be a great help to defray study fees, food and transport. He said that without the grant, he would have had to take up a part-time job to cover daily expenses. “I am thankful that the study award frees me from the burden of supporting my studies so that I can concentrate on my studies and do well,” the NUS first-year Environmental Engineering student said. SPWU Portworker 3 National Day Observance at PSA O ne people, one nation, one Singapore! PSA hosted the NTUC Transport and Logistics Cluster National Day Observance Ceremony (NDOC) on 12 August, in celebration of Singapore's Golden Jubilee. NTUC SecretaryGeneral (SG) Chan Chun Sing, joined in the celebrations along with PSA staff, officials and representatives from the NTUC, unions and companies in the Transport and Logistics cluster. The ceremony began with a PSA video followed by the singing of the National Anthem and recitation of the National Pledge. PSA Regional Chief Executive Officer Southeast Asia Tan Puay Hin gave a welcome address and SPWU General Secretary Arasu Duraisamy read the National Day Message from NTUC SG. SPWU members 4 SPWU Portworker E Portworker: and other participants then got to their feet and waved the Singapore flag with pride while singing national day songs led by the PSA Choir. The exuberant celebrations ended with a special SG50 cake cutting ceremony and a tour of PSA’s new Automated Crane Operations Centre and its new developments at Pasir Panjang Terminal 5. SPWU delegates and management partners also participated in the NDOC and a host of other celebratory events organised by NTUC at the Promontory at Marina Bay on 1, 7 and 9 August to mark Singapore’s historic milestone together with other brothers and sisters from the Labour Movement. SPWU Shines at U Summit 2015 S PWU recorded a 7% net increase of union membership from July 2014 to March 2015 and was awarded the U Achiever at the NTUC U Summit Award Ceremony at Universal Studios on 21 August. The U Achiever award was given to unions who have or are on their way to achieving more than 5% net increase in union membership. NTUC President Diana Chia and Secretary-General Chan E Portworker: Chun Sing presented the awards to the union leaders and congratulated them for achieving an amazing feat. SPWU President Joseph Wang collected the award on behalf of the union. Thank you to each and every single recruiters for shining in membership recruitment. Portworker goes online for the next issue. Look out for it in your email! SPWU Portworker 5 Xin Chào Vietnam! S ome 56 SPWU members jetted off to Ho Chi Minh, Vietnam for a five-day Educational Tour on 11 May 2015. The educational tour was organised to promote stronger ties and bonding among active union members, and also a good opportunity to identify potential union leaders. During the five days, members experienced the sights and sounds of Vietnam while they visited the Presidential Palace, Notre Dame Cathedral, The Old Saigon Post office, a lacquerware factory and a war museum. To get further understanding about Vietnam’s history, they explored the elaborate network of Cu Chi Tunnels used by the guerrillas during the Vietnam War. On top of that, they also went on a full day trip to Mekong Delta where they took a boat ride along the narrow waterways overhung with dense vegetation. The members were in high spirits throughout the whole trip and look forward to another enriching and exciting educational tour! SPWU & PSA MOA Signing A Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) was signed between SPWU and PSA, on 2 July 2015. RECOGNISING THE DEDICATED Awardee Soh Eng Khoon Awardee Lee Choy Ling T he Branch Officials Recognition Award (BORA) 2015 was held on 12 August at the Begonia Ballroom at Downtown East. Seventy-five branch officials from 43 unions were recognised for their dedication and commitment to help make the lives of workers better. This was the 15th year that the Ong Teng Cheong Labour Leadership Institute (OTCi) has organised the award ceremony, providing a platform for unions to recognise the many contributions made by branch officials in their respective companies. Over 250 attendees were at the event graced by Guest-of-Honour NTUC Secretary-General Chan Chun Sing. Family members of the awardees were also present at the ceremony to render their support and good cheer. SPWU Awardees were two of our delegates, Ms Lee Choy Ling and Mr Soh Eng Khoon. BringING Joy TO HAPPY VILLA HOME H appy is the home that receives care and compassion. SPWU officials, ExCo members and Care and Share Committee members visited the elderly residents of Happy Villa Home in Tanjong Pagar Plaza on 18 June. A host of fun activities such as singing performances, games and cake cutting ceremony were organised. SPWU officials and ExCo members bonded with the residents over light refreshments and took some group photographs to capture the memory. On behalf of SPWU, Executive Secretary Jessie Yeo also distributed red packets to the residents as part of the union’s service to the community. SPWU Portworker 7 Healthy Snacks for Fund S PWU and Port Officers’ Union (POU) once again joined forces for a worthy cause. They set up a stall selling dried fruits and nuts at the PSA Charity Food Fair 2015. Healthy grains, fruits and nuts such as chia seeds, cranberries, raisins, figs, walnuts, cashews were on display and proved to be a hit among patrons. Through the spirit of generosity from PSA staff across all levels and divisions, who flocked to the PSA Club on 4 September 2015 for the annual food fair, SPWU and POU raised $7,519 for the Muscular Dystrophy Association Singapore (MDAS). The event continues to be a great opportunity for SPWU and POU to make a difference in the lives of the less privileged. SPWU Cares and Shares Thanking Port Workers for Hard Work The U-Appreciate Campaign, organised by the Transport and Logistics Cluster in celebration of SG50, saw SPWU leaders and cluster representatives visit port workers at the Brani Residence and Pasir Panjang Terminal Canteen on 15 and 22 July. Packets of Pokka health tea and Gardenia breads were distributed to over 2,500 workers to thank them for their hard work in building our port to a world renowned one. 8 SPWU Portworker E Portworker: Portworker goes online for the next issue.
