Forty-four years ago John Kennedy became the first Catholic elected President of the
United States. This year TV talking heads speculated whether Barack Obama of Illinois
may someday become the first person of color elected President, but in 1960 there was
prejudice against a Catholic candidate and some used this to obscure the real issues in
the campaign.
Kennedy had to respond to this and did so at a minister’s convention in Houston. He
said, “I believe in an America where the separation of church and state is absolute—where
no Catholic prelate would tell the President (should he be Catholic) how to act, and no
Protestant minister would tell his parishioners for whom to vote—where no church or
church school is granted any public funds or political preference….”
Kennedy went on to say he believed in a country without an official religion, one of
the fundamental differences between the U.S. and countries founded earlier, and one
“where no religious body seeks to impose its will directly or indirectly upon the general
populace or the public acts of its officials.”
What a long way we’ve come—but in which direction?—reaching 2004 when a
Catholic Senator from Massachusetts is again the Democratic candidate for president.
Today, the prejudice against Kerry is not so much from anti-Catholics but from the
Bishops of the Catholic Church itself. The U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops has come
out strong against Kerry’s support for a woman’s right to choose. Some bishops have even
declared that Catholic parishioners who vote for a pro-choice candidate will have to go
to confession before receiving Communion.
What the Bishops ignore is the stand of Kerry, and other Catholic politicians, on a broad
range of issues important to the Catholic Church. Senator Dick Durbin of Illinois released
a study, which showed that John Kerry’s Senate record agreed with the Bishops position
on issues 60% of the time, the highest in the Senate.
One of the issues Catholic voters should look at is whether Kerry’s high marks on a long
list of issues is more important than a single—however important—issue. If Kerry stands
with you on more issues than he disagrees with you on, and Bush is attacking you on
everything (except one thing) that is important to you, who should you vote for?
Another thing we should all look at is the shift in view on the relationship of
government to religious institutions. Kennedy wanted to protect the First Amendment
and its separation of church and state. Bush has broken that down by granting public funds
to religious institutions. Kennedy wanted no religious organization to push its issues on
the government and general population. Bush owes much to an energetic base that wants
to exert religious control over government. This November the voters will decide which
direction our country will go.

Latino groups call for destruction of the
Terminator’s movies
Latino activists on Tuesday promised to “punish”
California Gov. Arnold
Schwarzenegger—the Terminator—for his veto of
legislation that would have
allowed illegal immigrants
to obtain drivers licenses.
For their campaign, part
of a broader effort to target
Schwarzenegger, the rally
organizers solicited the donation of movies the former
actor starred in—so they
can be ceremonially destroyed.
Last
month,
Schwarzenegger vetoed a
bill that would have let up to
two million immigrants
drive legally.
The legislation’s supporters vowed to go after the governor. Schwarzenegger has
said the bill ignored his requirement of key security
safeguards—an identifying
mark that would differentiate them from licenses held
by U.S. citizens and legal
residents.
Leaders of Latino Move-
ment USA, a pro-immigrant
group which led Tuesday’s
rally of several dozen
people, want to galvanize a
statewide movement.
“We’re going to make
clear that while the Latino
community has long been
passive, the time has come
to fight back,” rally coordinator Juan José Gutiérrez
said.
The group wants to collect enough DVDs and video
cassettes for a symbolic destruction in December.

Court overturns Bush Rule on
temporary visas barring
migrant children
SAN FRANCISCO (AP):
Immigrant children of legal
U.S. residents should be allowed to stay in the country
past age 21 while they are
seeking visas, a federal appeals court ruled Tuesday.
The decision by the 9th
U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals overturned a Bush administration regulation and
could affect thousands of
immigrant families in which
one or both parents had become legal U.S. residents
and applied for the same
status for their children living abroad.
Under a law passed in
2000, children of legal residents, who had been waiting
for at least three years for a
visa outside of the United
States, could get a temporary
visa while waiting for a ruling
on their permanent application.
The law did not specify
what would happen to the
children after they turned 21,
but Judge James Browning
wrote for the unanimous
three-judge panel that the
purpose of the law was “to
reunite families of immigrants
petitioning for permanent
residency
until
the
petitioner’s visa number
Political
Piñata
comes up.”
The ruling resulted from
a Southern California case
of two Filipinos who entered with temporary visas
shortly before turning 21
and were ordered to leave
almost immediately.
The ruling only applies
to children whose parents
applied for visas for them by
December 2000.
The government had no
immediate comment.
Migrant workers sue Ottawa County
blueberry grower over conditions
GRAND RAPIDS,
Mich. (AP), Oct. 2: Some
migrant workers have sued
an Ottawa County blueberry grower, claiming
they were paid less than
minimum wage, didn’t get
paid for all their hours and
were denied clean water
and adequate rest rooms.
The Michigan Migrant
Legal Assistance Project is
seeking class-action status
for the lawsuit, which was
filed Friday in federal
court. If approved for classaction status, more than
3,000 people who worked
at Brady Farms from 19992004 could be eligible for
compensation.
“We see this as a pattern,” lawyer Robert
Alvarez told The Grand
Rapids Press. “The grower
knows or should know what
happens at every level of
their operation.”
An attorney for the farm,
Elizabeth Skaggs, said she
had not seen the lawsuit and
could not comment.
Alvarez said the legal
group earlier this year settled
a lawsuit on behalf of 43
workers for $63,000. The latest complaint names owner
Robert Brady, two managers
and several people who recruited blueberry pickers.
Alvarez said the workers
were not required to fill out
federal payroll forms and
generally were paid in cash.
The lawsuit says wages were
reduced by amounts owed
to crew leaders for housing,
which brought the pay below minimum wage.
Some of the two dozen
workers who have signed up
as plaintiffs said conditions
in the fields were miserable.
“Sometimes the bathroom was so far that it took
a half-hour to walk there,
and then you had to get in
line because it was the only
toilet,” said Esperanza
Matta, 21.
Leticia Infante, 22, said
she knew toiling in the
fields wasn’t easy, but she
expected better treatment.
“They didn’t have water
or soap to wash our hands,”
she said. “People had to (urinate) between the plants.”

Por Teodosio Feliciano,
reportero de La Prensa
Para algunas el destino
esta en los genes familiares.
Esto se puede decir de Diamar
Cordero. Su padre y hermano
son barberos y su hermana es
cosmetóloga. ¿Que remedio
tenia Diamar? Ella recién
gano su certificado de
gerencia en cosmetología y
tiene puesto de maestra en la
escuela de donde se graduó.
Y esto lo hace mientras cuida
de su familia, esposo
Edgardo y dos nenes
varones. También ella
trabaja en el salón de belleza
Beauty Spot en el vecindario
de Cleveland, Kamms
Corners.
Otra parte del destino
consiste de superar los
obstáculos que se encuentran
y desarrollar buenas
amistades. Su familia tuvo
que mudarse de la capital de
la Republica Dominica
cuando Diamar tenia solo
siente años. La economía
había empeorado y la familia
perdió todo. Un amigo
familiar le invito empezar de
nuevo en la isla caribeña de
San Martín. Diamar dice que
él era el primer barbero
profesional en esa isla
pequeña. Después de vivir
en San Martín por un tiempo
Diamar vino a Cleveland.
Un hermano vivía allí y

gusto el ambiente y decidió
quedarse. Antes de cumplir
los 18 años en 1994 Diamar
se graduó de escuela superior
y se fue a vivir en Nueva
York con su hermano. Ya
para octubre de 1995 había
regresado a Cleveland. No
le había gustado el ambiente
de Nueva York. El destino le
guardaba una sorpresa.
Mientras disfrutaba del
ambiente de las fiestas

único novio. Desde el
principio de su vida
conyugal él la ha apoyado
en todo.
Diamar tiene amistad
especial con Sandi Papcum
actual dueña de Beauty Spot.
Sandi asistió a la escuela de
cosmetología con Diamar y
allí se hicieron buenas
amigas. Al contraste con su
amiga Sandi se crió en

después de cumplir un
bachillerato universitario y
tener otra carrera. Después
de que ambos padres
fallecieron Sandi sintió una

para una cadena de salones
de recorte de pelo.
Pero al poco tiempo noto
un anuncio que había un

ella. Ambos han trabajado
mucho a cambiar la imagen
de Beauty Spot de salón solo

todas las edades y culturas
son bienvenidas. Han creado
un ambiente donde todos los
miembros de una familia se
sienten cómodos, hasta los
hombres vienen a recortarse.
Sandi dice que su meta es
tener un salón de alta calidad
con precios razonables.
Sandi y Diamar han creado
actividades especiales que
raras veces se ven en los
salones de Cleveland.
Tienen días de fotos de

cuando mujeres vienen a

Breves
Hallazgos reavivan
misterio de origen de la
vida en el continente
Por JOHN RICE
MEXICO (AP): Durante
muchos
consideran
antepasado del moderno
Homo sapiens.
Pero se cree que el Homo
erectus se extinguió hace
100.000 a 200.000 años,
evidencia comparativa”.
El hallazgo de Solórzano
fue detallado en una
conferencia en septiembre
aquí que atrajo académicos

RAMIRO BURR’S LATIN MUSIC: Emotions send the
message for new artist Amanda
By RAMIRO BURR
Recording a debut album
is a daunting task for any
new artist, but pop singer/
songwriter Amanda says the
biggest challenge she faced
was finding the right emotion.
“Each particular song is
like a story and so in order to
be convincing, you have to
convey that message,” said
the Houston-based singer in
a recent interview. “And as a
singer, the only vehicle is
your voice. We have no visuals to help us so we have
to put everything we have
into the vocals.”
Amanda, 22, puts on a
convincing performance on
her debut self-titled CD on
the Universal Records label.
The
first
single,
“Devuélveme la Vida,” has
been getting airplay on
Tejano and Latin pop stations.
“Devuélveme la Vida”
has the familiar you-neverloved-or-appreciated-me
sentiment. Amanda conveys
the pain of realizing too late
one’s love and devotion has
gone to someone who was
never really serious.
As Amanda sees it, a good
singer is like a good actor.
“It (singing) is like acting but it’s tougher. You
(singer) have to play the role
but on the record, you only
have your voice. We have
no facial expressions, body
language or costuming to
help us.
“The key is to dig deep to
find that emotion that will
help the listener catch on to
the story or feel the pain, or
remember when they went
through the same emotion.”
Amanda has clear distinctive vocals, recalling the
dulcet tones of Alicia
Villarreal. But Amanda can
also belt out the pain of
torchy heartbreakers such as
“Si te Vas,” where she contemplates a future without
that special someone.
“We did that song in a
minor key so naturally the
tone is dramatic and very
sad. The theme is about that
someone who is leaving you
and you know they will always remain in your heart. It
is a difficult situation that I
think people can relate to.”
Amanda is also a
songwriter who’s been writing since she was 16. She
wrote or co-wrote 10 of the
13 tracks on the album. Her
songwriting partners included Yasmil Marrufo and
Marc Durandeau, who have
written and produced No. 1
singles for Ricky Martin and
Chayanne.
On “Hoy,” the new single
to be released next week,
Amanda takes the stance of
an independent woman who
tells her wayward lout of a
boyfriend to go fly a kite.
The mid-tempo tune is fueled by mariachi-style horns.
The track was inspired by
something that happened
while she was recording the
album in Miami.
“We were beginning
work on another song when
I got a phone call. It was a
disturbing call and it upset
me. I felt unappreciated,
which is one of the worst
feelings anyone can ever
have.”
Like most songwriters,
Amanda used that experience to help her finish the
song at home.
“It’s the story of loving someone but getting
tired of their lies so I wrote,
‘This is the day I wake up
and move on without you.’”
Despite her youth,
Amanda’s strengths are “her
amazing voice and her attitude,” said veteran Miamibased producer Rodolfo
Castillo, who has worked
with Paulina Rubio and
Julio Iglesias.
“She has a great range as
a singer, which is rare
among singers. Amanda is
a leader when it comes to
knowing what she wants.
But she is also a follower in
the sense that she is open to
ideas, and that is very important.”
Castillo co-produced the
album
with
Iker
Gastaminza, Juan Carlos
Rodriguez,
Gabriel
Candiani and Amanda.
“As a new artist, the recording of this album was
an immense step forward in
my career,” she said. “I
wanted to be sure that I was
given some creative control and able to truly give
the audience a legitimate
view of who I am.
“I didn’t expect to have
as much say as I did but
luckily the team I worked
with at Universal honestly
believed in my talent as a
singer/songwriter and allowed me to just let the creative juices flow.”
Amanda has been busy in
recent weeks. Besides her
continuing radio promotional tour, she also performed at the Latin Grammys
Street Party in Houston with
Alicia Machado, Akwid and
Eliseo Robles. She is also the
artist of the month at San
Antonio’s KXTN-FM, where
she is getting medium rotation.
She will be in Puerto Rico
soon to film the video for
“Hoy,” and as a songwriter,
she recently signed on with
BMG Publishing.

Mundial: EEUU 2, El Salvador 0
Por DIEGO MENDEZ
SAN SALVADOR (AP):
Estados Unidos venció el
sábado 2-0 a El Salvador y
se consolidó en el primer
puesto del Grupo A de la
eliminatoria
de
la
CONCACAF rumbo a un
hexagonal final de la
CONCACAF, donde se
definirán los boletos para
el Campeonato Mundial
de Alemania 2006.
Brian McBride abrió la
cuenta a los 29 minutos y
Edward Johnson aumentó
a los 75 para los
estadounidenses.
A dos fechas por
concluir la ronda, Estados
Unidos quedó en la punta
del Grupo A de la
CONCACAF con ocho
puntos; Jamaica y Panamá,
que empataron 1-1,
sumaron cinco cada uno.
El Salvador, con tres, sigue
en el sótano sin
posibilidades.
El partido marcó el debut
del
técnico
salvadoreño Armando
Contreras Palma que
sustituyó a Juan Ramón
Paredes.
Dirigidos por el joven
volante Víctor Merino, El
Salvador mostró un equipo
más aguerrido y por
momentos puso en apuros a
la zaga estadounidense.
A los tres minutos, Merino burló la marca de dos
defensas, pero su centro fue
rechazado.
Estados Unidos tuvo la
primera oportunidad de
anotar a los 12 minutos
cuando el volante Clinton
Mathis no logró enganchar
en el área un centro de
DaMarcus Beasley.
McBride abrió el
marcador a los 29 minutos y
enmudeció a unos 20.000
aficionados que asistieron
al estadio Cuscatlán de esta
capital.
McBride anotó tras
recibir un pase en corto en el
área de Landon Donovan y
con tiro cruzado batió al
guardameta Misael Alfaro.
Las selecciones salieron
en el segundo tiempo sin
variantes y a penas los tres
minutos el guardameta
salvadoreño Alfaro logró
contener un disparo en corto
del delantero Josh Wolff.
Johnson consiguió el
segundo tanto para Estados
Unidos a los 75 y cinco
minutos después de haber
ingresado en sustitución de
McBride.
Johnson recibió en corto
de Donovan, que burló la
salida de Alfaro, y marcó a
placer con puerta vacía.
El central guatemalteco
Carlos Batres mostró
tarjetas amarillas al
estadounidense Cory
Gibbs y los salvadoreños
Víctor Merino, Ronald
Cerritos, Marvin González
y Isaac Zelaya.
Gibbs
no
podrá
participar en el partido contra Panamá el miércoles en
Washington en la quinta y
penúltima fecha del grupo.
El Salvador jugará de
visitante en Jamaica.

Mundial: México practicó tiro a gol ante San
Vicente
MEXICO (AP): México
reafirmó ser amplio favorito
para ganar el Grupo C de las
eliminatorias de la
CONCACAF a la Copa
Mundial, al apabullar el 7-0
a San Vicente, en un partido
que crítica consideró más
bien como una «práctica de
tiro».
Los mexicanos suman
dos triunfos en igual número
de partidos disputados en el
grupo. En su primer
encuentro superaron de
visita 3-1 a Trinidad y Tobago.
México encabeza el
grupo con seis puntos y con
diez goles a favor y uno en
contra. Trinidad y Tobago
también tiene seis unidades,
pero en tres encuentros. San
Vicente, que también ya
jugó tres partidos, tiene tres
puntos. El grupo lo completa
St. Kitts, sin puntos en dos
encuentros.
«Cascarita (práctica): 7-0»,
dice el titular de Excelsior,
quien también comenta que el
tricolor «tuvo para hacer
muchos goles más».
«Luce (Cuauhtémoc)
Blanco genial y (Jared)
Borgetti goleador, ante el
indefenso San Vicente»,
comenta el diario Reforma,
quien en su titular de su pagina
deportiva dice: «Práctica de
tiro».
Borgetti anotó cuatro
goles, Jaime Lozano hizo otro
par y cerró la cuenta Sergio
Santana, pero el que se lució
fue Cuauhtémoc Blanco,
estelar delantero que no vestía
la camiseta de México desde
hace 20 meses.
Blanco brilló con sus pases
e incluso cedió un balón de
taquito para que Lozano
marcara el tercer tanto de la
goleada.
Blanco, de 31 años, regresó
al equipo nacional en «plan
grande» y se «brindó como
figura», dice Reforma.
Por su parte, El Universal
comenta que «El Tri tuvo un
segundo tiempo abrumador
y destrozó a San Vicente».
También destaca que los
mexicanos batallaron para
abrir el marcador y que en el
primer tiempo solamente
tenían ventaja de 1-0.
México viajará para
devolver la visita a San
Vicente el próximo
domingo. Tres días después
recibirá en la ciudad de
Puebla a St. Kitts.
Si México gana sus
próximos partidos asegurará
una de los dos plazas que
adjudica el grupo para
avanzar a un hexagonal final donde se repartirán tres
plazas a la Copa Mundial
Alemania 2006. El cuarto
sitio del hexagonal jugará
un repechaje contra una
selección de Asia.

Molina gives reasons for
Latino inclusion
By Teodosio Feliciano,
La Prensa Staff Writer
Juan Molina, Lorain
County Children and Family Council Executive Di-
rector, spoke as part of a panel
on diversity and economic
development at the Levin
College of Urban Affairs at
Cleveland State University
on Friday.
Molina spoke effectively
about cultural solidarity,
Great Lakes Innovation & Development
Enterprise
(GLIDE), Lorain County Partnership, and the meaningful
inclusion of the Latino community.
In his prepared remarks,
he presents the idea that culture helps a group resist social and economic subordination to a dominant majority. He feels that solidarity
gives the members of minority groups the confidence to
organize and take risks politically and economically.
He insists Latinos must use
the cultural values of respect
and honor in its rise to political importance.
Molina also spoke about
the private/public partnership of the Lorain County
Commissioners, Lorain
County Community College, and Lorain County
Chamber of Commerce,
called GLIDE, which is located on the community
college’s campus.
The project is designed to
help businesses grow either
from an idea or for expansion. GLIDE’s services include: business idea assessments, technology and staffing support, access to legal
counsel, education, business
management mentoring, access to capital, and strategic
business guidance.
Molina announced that
Lorain County Chamber of
Commerce and Team Lorain
County will form a new
group called Lorain County
Growth partnership.
Molina finished his remarks by including statistics
that indicate that the Latino
community in Ohio grew by
55% in the 1990s and that
Latinos represent more than
10% of the Lorain and
Cuyahoga County combined population. He estimates that there are over
46,000 Latino voters in
Lorain and Cuyahoga. Such
large and growing numbers
of Latinos in two neighboring counties demand that
equitable planning in regionalism, smart growth and
shopping center development must include Latino
perspectives in meaningful
way.

Felipe Perez, right, holds the Estrella award while posing with his wife, Herlinda,

Pérez wins Estrella Award at Terra
A Spanish radio program
host from Findlay was the
recipient of the 2004 Estrella
Award at Terra Community
College.
Felipe Pérez was honored
last week during an award
dinner at the college. The
Estrella, Award is given annually to celebrate National
Hispanic Heritage Month.
Pérez was born in San Antonio, Texas in 1930 to Gerardo
and Carmen Pérez of Coahuila,
México. At 15, he became “the
man of the house” for his three
sisters and mother when his
father died.
In 1953, Pérez married
Herlinda Casiano and two
years later, they moved to Ohio
where they have lived ever
since. They have seven children, 21 grandchildren, and
four great-grandchildren.
With few organized educational opportunities, Pérez
taught himself to speak, read,
and write in English. He eventually obtained his GED and
in 1966, began working for
the State of Ohio’s Migrant
Rest Center in Liberty Center.
At about the same time,
Pérez secured an hour or two
every weekend on WFIN in
Findlay to announce Latino
music. Knowing the Latino
community in Findlay as he
did, he understood their need
for a such radio program that
would help break down barriers for the Spanish-speaking
population.
Since 1971, Pérez has been
announcing dedications on
WFOB in Fostoria on Saturday evenings.
Pérez retired from the Migrant Rest Center in 1974 but
has continued to be an advocate for the migrant population.
A devote Catholic, Pérez
was a member of the
Guadalupe Society in Findlay
for ten years. He received an
award last year from the Hispanic Awareness Club of
Fostoria for his years of service
via the radio to the Latino community.
The Estrella award was established to honor an area individual for outstanding character, citizenship and community service. The previous winners of the Estrella Award are:
2000: Narciso Rodríguez,
Fremont
2001: Juan Salvador
Olalde, Port Clinton
2002: María Guadalupe
“Lupe” López (posthumously), Fostoria
2003: Jesus “Jesse”
Zambrano, Fremont
The keynote speaker for the
event was Guadalupe G. Lara,
MSW, CSW, the Director of
the Division of Family and
Community Support Services
at the Children’s Hospital of
Michigan.

(AP): American Airlines
said Thursday it will reduce
business-class fares from
some U.S. cities to the Caribbean, México, and Latin
America.
American, the largest
U.S. carrier, said the lowestpriced fares require a 14day advance purchase.
All the fares require buying a round-trip ticket, and
nonrefundable. American
said it would not require a
minimum stay on any of the
fares, available on its web
site.
The Fort Worth-based airline said the fare on a round
trip between Dallas-Fort
Worth and Caracas, Venezuela, would cost $956. According to American’s Web
site, a similar ticket now
would start at about $1,050.
The reductions appeared to
be similar for business-class
seats bought seven or three
days in advance.
The fares don’t include
various taxes and fees of up
to $24—higher to some destinations—and seats are
limited, the airline said.

al
comercio con Cuba, la isla
se convirtió en el tercer país
importador de arroz
norteamericano luego de
México y Japón, indicaron
fuentes del sector.
La Habana compró este
año 100.000 toneladas del
grano norteamericano,
explicó Pedro Alvarez,
presidente de la empresa
Alimport, quien firmó el
jueves una carta de
intención para ampliar sus
relaciones
con
los
productores de la vecina
nación.
Según el ejecutivo, la
isla adquiere en total en el
exterior cada año unas
550.000 toneladas de arroz,

y China.

La evidencia de lo que
pudo haber habido antes
sigue siendo escasa,
dispersa y controversial.
Los arqueólogos han
propuesto posibles rutas
alternativas
Investigadores
sudamericanos dicen haber
hallado numerosos sitios
de 10.000 a 15.000 años de
antig Juedad y sostienen
que los Clovis no pudieron
“Creo que si las
relaciones económicas
siguen por buen camino,
Cuba tiene la potencia de
importar más de 500.000
toneladas y llegar a primer
puesto”, indicó Roberts.
Según las cifras de
Alimport, desde el 2001,
cuando una enmienda del
congreso en Washington
eliminó a los productos comestibles de las sanciones,
la isla hizo compras por 955
millones de dólares.
Considerada
una
mercancía que no debe ser
usada como instrumento de
presión política, los

en contado.
Pese a ello al arroz se sumó
la adquisición de pollos,
huevos, frijoles y hasta
chicles.
Desde la apertura unas
3.500
compañías
contactaron con Alimport,
la única empresa cubana
comercializadora alimentos,
y 1.500 visitaron la isla,
comentó Alvarez.
Con la mayoría de las
delegaciones norteamericanas
se rubricaron convenios y en
algunos casos cartas de
cláusula con el expreso interés
de las partes por luchar contra
las sanciones estadounidenses
a la isla.
Calificados como “un

tras indicar que la decisión
era “un problema interno”
de
la
empresa
norteamericana.
“Alimport
no
acostumbra a presionar a
nadie para que firme
acuerdos. Sería una falta de
lógica pensar que un amigo
norteamericano
que
representa a una gran
compañía o un miembro del
congreso se deje presionar
por un simple empresario”,
dijo Alvarez.
No se trata de política
sino de comercio, indicó
Alvarez, pues si no hubiera

Estados Unidos.
haber migrado hasta el
extremo del continente en
Tierra del Fuego, en el
extremo sur de Sudamérica,
tan pronto después que el
corredor libre de hielo se
desprendió del Asia hasta
Alaska.
La arqueóloga argentina
Laura Miotti coincide en
que los migrantes llegaron
probablemente del norte.
Pero ella y otros dicen que
no se han registrado
hallazgos similares a lo de
los Clovis en las partes de
Asia
de
la
que
supuestamente proceden, y
se preguntan por qué los
sitios en el norte de América
no parecen ser más antiguos
que los del sur del
continente.
La evidencia de los
primeros seres humanos en
las Américas, aunque
escasa, es fascinante.
Incluye, entre otras cosas:
-Una posible espátula
con manchas de sangre
que data de hace más de
34.000 años hallada en
Monte Verde, Chile.
-Posibles herramientas
de piedra encontradas en
Brasil con antig Juedad de
40.000 a 50.000 años.
-Un informe todavía no
publicado sobre restos
humanos de hace unos
28.000 años cerca de
Puebla, en el centro de
México.
Y lo que es más
elocuente es que una
mayoría de arqueólogos
está convencida de que un
segundo sitio en Monte
Verde data de por lo menos
14.000 años, unos 500
años antes de que se abriera
el puente terrestre desde el
Asia
unos
15.000
kilómetros al norte.
Pero las fechas siguen
siendo cuestionadas.
