Shalom and welcome to summer 2012! It‟s hard to believe that day one at the Lebovic Jewish Community
Campus is almost here! We are delighted that you have selected The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp for
your camper this summer. By choosing The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, you are providing your
camper with a fun and exciting summer, and more importantly, giving your camper opportunities for
enhancing self-esteem and growth in every way possible. Ensuring the safety of our campers is our top
priority, and we will soon begin an extensive orientation and training for our carefully selected, enthusiastic
and caring staff.
Our Summer Information Handbook has been created to assist and excite your family for this experience
and to ensure that it goes as smoothly as possible. Inside you will find important information that will
answer many of your questions about the upcoming summer. Please read this manual carefully and
keep it for future use. We have added important content for 2012 as we want you and your camper to be
as prepared as possible for the always exciting first day of camp.
Each year we carefully plan and improve the camp experience based on feedback from camper families,
staff and campers. Feedback is a gift, and we‟re all ears. While evaluation forms will be distributed at the
end of each session, feel free to contact us any time to discuss your experience. We appreciate all of your
feedback as we continue to build our camp together.

4. A delicious lunch program for 2012! Here in the handbook you‟ll find out more about our exciting,
healthy, hot and delicious Optional Lunch Program! We‟re proud to announce our new partnership

In this package you will find your campers‟ name tag. Please ensure that it
is on your camper’s shirt for the first day of camp. The name tag will
include either a bus colour, „PP‟ (parent pickup), or „EH‟ (extended hours).
This will allow us to easily identify each camper‟s transportation. The name
tag also includes your camper‟s cabin.
Please notify the Camp Office, of changes with at least, day notice. As with any note sent to camp,
please place it in a sealed envelope marked “Camp Office” and give it to your camper‟s bus captain or
the staff member signing in your child at the parent drop off zone. Dismissal change forms are
required for any transportation updates. Please see page 6 for more information on dismissal
changes.
K’tanim Arrival – Our Preschool program drop off will take place in front of the Schwartz/Reisman
Centre at 9600 Bathurst Street – entrance off of Lebovic Campus Drive. Lebovic Campus Drive can
be accessed by Bathurst Street or Ilan Ramon Boulevard. Campers will exit the car on the right side
along the curb in front of the preschool and daycare playground. There will be limited parking should
you want to get out of your car. Staff will greet you as you pull your car up.
Dropping Off Siblings – Siblings of K‟tanim campers should be dropped off here as well (the rest of
parent drop off will take place in front of Tanenbaum CHAT, off of Marc Santi Boulevard.). We will
have staff available to take these children to general camp Flagpole.
General Camp Arrival – All full day campers (excluding K‟tanim) should be dropped off in front of
Tanenbaum CHAT located on the south side of the campus, off of Marc Santi Boulevard. During drop
off, camp staff will greet you in your car on the school side of the street. Campers will unload from the
lane facing east/west (as it‟s a long L shaped drop off lane) and will be checked into our attendance
records and escorted to the campsite by the camp staff. Drop off will begin at 8:45am. Drop off can
only occur once there is a staff member present to greet your camper.
K’tanim Dismissal - Pickup for ½ day and ¾ day K‟tanim campers will take place in your child‟s room
located in the Schwartz/Reisman Centre preschool and daycare. Room numbers will be posted on a
sign inside the front doors of the Schwartz/Reisman Centre. Please bring the appropriate
identification with you, as we will not release the child to an unauthorized individual. Full day
campers will be part of the camp wide dismissal program. For more information see the general camp
dismissal procedure below.
General Camp Dismissal - At the end of the day, campers will be dismissed in front of Tanenbaum
CHAT located on the south side of the campus, off of Marc Santi Boulevard. There will be no parking
available in the school parking lot. Parents will be asked to park their cars alongside the lane facing
east/west (as it‟s a long L shaped drop off lane). To ensure the safety of all campers, they will only
be released once identification has been checked. Please be patient on the first couple of days of
each session as our staff get to know you. Dismissal will begin at 3:50pm
5
Late Arrival - If your camper arrives after 9:30am, you must bring him/her to the Camp Office (room
s140 at Tanenbaum CHAT). Your camper‟s Unit Head will then be notified and they will take them to
his/her appropriate group. Please make every effort to be on time to ensure your camper‟s maximum
participation in the full camp day. Do not bring your camper directly to the camp site if he/she arrives
late.
Early Pickup & Bus Changes – If you wish to pick up your camper early, pick up your camper at
camp even though he/she is ordinarily a bus rider, or change your camper‟s bus for the day please let
us know in advance -- no later than 1 p.m. the same day. You can either call the camp office at 905303-6089 or email your request to [email protected]
To ensure the security of your children, ALL EARLY PICKUPS MUST BE MADE AT THE CAMP
OFFICE. Early pick-ups must occur by 3:00 p.m., or your camper will be held until regular dismissal at
3:30. We appreciate your cooperation with this matter. Be prepared to show photo ID when picking
up your camper.
If you drop by at the end of the day (3:00 p.m. or later) to pick up your camper without prior notice, we
will ask that you wait until dismissal time. At other times of the day, we will call for your camper(s)
immediately, but be aware that they may be at the pool or in the middle of another activity that takes
time to be concluded. Please do not pickup your camper from the group. It is best to inform us in the
morning so that we can ensure that your camper is ready for you.
Dismissal Change Forms – Our dismissal change forms are used to ensure camper safety. This form
must be filled out when making any transportation changes (i.e. early dismissal, bus change,
additional authorized pickups and/or self dismissal). Please review the information on your welcome
letter to ensure that it is accurate. Please do not make changes to your online account; all changes
must now be made through the online Dismissal Change form – www.centrecamp.ca/forms
Extended hours programming will take place before and after camp. Morning extended hours will take
place Tanenbaum CHAT in the gymnasium (make a left once you enter), from 7:30am – 8:45am, while
PM extended hours will take place from 4:00-6:00p,. Families should go to the Camp Office, room
s140 at Tanenbaum CHAT, to pick up their campers. AM Extended Hours costs $7.00/day and PM
Extended Hours costs $12.00/day.
Visitors are not permitted to interact with campers or counsellors during the camp day. To be approved
to be onsite, please get permission from the Camp Office. Adults identified as non-staff members who
are in program areas during the camp day will be asked to leave, unless they have received prior
approval through the Camp Office.

FOR YOUR CHILD’S SAFETY, BUS CHANGES MUST BE MADE BEFORE 1:00pm FOR
TRANSPORT ON THE SAME DAY.
1. We take communication and busing very seriously at The Jack and Pat Kay
Centre Camp. We have partnered with the leader in transportation – Stock
Transportation. We have revamped our busing procedures and route creation
and are extremely excited to pass on the benefits to you! To ensure you are
always up-to-date with dismissal times, camp will post an update on Twitter
at the end of each day if there are any major delays or important updates. Be
sure to follow @centrecamp at www.twitter.com/centrecamp
2. Camp starts on the bus! Our energetic staff will have plenty of games and songs for your
campers to kick off their day!
3. Campers must be ready and waiting at their depot 5 minutes before the pickup time. They
should be prepared to wait 5 minutes past the pickup time in the event of an unforeseen delay.
Door to Door campers should be looking out for the bus 5 minutes prior to the pickup time.
Upon dismissal families should greet the bus outside the home (unless a self dismissal form
has been signed) as identification will still be required.
4. When K‟tanim campers board the bus, a seat will be reserved for them at the front of the bus.
When they arrive to camp they will be escorted by staff to the K‟tanim welcoming area.
5. Important information regarding the bus schedule: Campers on bus depots should refer to
the Bus Schedule enclosed in this mailing for bus pick-up and drop-off times. Door to Door
campers must look at the cover letter for their pick up and drop off times.
6. Please ensure that your child gets on the bus marked „THE JACK AND PAT KAY CENTRE
CAMP‟ (we do share some depots with other camps)! The signs will be on the front and back
windows of each bus.
7. The bus driver and bus captains are designated authorities on the bus and, as such, their
instructions must be followed.
8. Please be respectful of all our camp families by being on time both for pick-up and drop-off. If
you are late meeting your camper at the end of the day, your camper will be brought
back to the camp office with a staff member and a late fee (to cover the staff member’s
ride home) will apply. The camp office closes promptly at 6:00pm.
9. If you need information concerning camp, or have any questions, please send us a note
through the bus captain. Someone from the Camp Office will phone you during the day.
Please put the camper’s name, date, a telephone number and signature on all notes.
During the summer, please report any and all questions related to busing to the camp office at
905-303-6089 or [email protected]
10. An adult must be at the depot when your camper arrives, unless your camper is on self
dismissal. For any changes please fill out the Dismissal Change Form. Each bus captain has
the names of those authorized to pick up your camper. Only authorized persons (proper ID
required) will receive your camper.

Safety is always a priority at The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp.
All of the pool rules will be explained to campers on the first day of
each session and campers will constantly be supervised by swim
staff while in the pool area. The goal of the swim program is to
motivate campers, and enable them to become better swimmers.
As a precaution, if your camper does not swim for consecutive
days we will contact you.
The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp is proud to be offering the Red Cross swimming and water safety
program. The program includes; a progressive ten level system, a strong instructor development
program and a focus on fitness and fun to help kids develop healthy habits for life. Over the course of
the summer, campers will be working towards improving their swimming skills as well as having fun in
the pools. At the end of each session, a final report will be sent home with your camper.
The first day of camp will be strictly an evaluation day for the swim staff to assess campers‟ swim
skills. Campers will be placed into appropriate swim groups on the second day of camp. Additional
adjustments are sometimes made afterwards. Notices will be sent home on the first Friday of each
session with each child‟s swim level and instructor.
Every camper has a chance to earn their deep-end bracelet. This bracelet is earned when a camper
completes a swim check that demonstrates their ability to keep their head above water and swim to
safety. The deep end test includes one length of front crawl, one length of back crawl and 5 minutes
of treading water. Campers will only be allowed in the deep end during recreational swim with a
bracelet. Deep end tests can be attempted an unlimited number of times in a summer, as campers‟
swimming skills improve as time goes on, and our instructors work with them.
If at any time during the summer you have any questions or concerns about anything in the swimming
program, instructors, placement level, rules, etc., please do not hesitate to call our Swim Director
Michelle Fishman or email us at [email protected] Keep in mind that because of the
hands-on nature of our Camp, our swim staff spend the majority of their day on the pool deck and are
unable to answer calls until after camp hours. Please leave messages with our camp office with
appropriate evening phone numbers and contact information.
Keep your child’s backpack light, as there is no need to pack a towel for your camper.
The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp offers a free
Towel Service!
8
On the first day of camp, each camper in our K‟tanim unit will need to
bring a picture of him/herself, a change of clothing (please make sure
that everything is clearly labeled), sun screen, diapers, pull-ups and
swimmers (if needed). If your camper is still in diapers/pull ups please
send along a container of wipes. We recommend that everything be
brought in a shoebox for easy storing in your camper‟s cabin, as the
clothes will remain at camp for the duration of your child‟s stay.
Two Bathing Suits – Each day, campers will get an instructional swim period and a recreational
swim. Our camp knapsacks have been designed with a special pouch for wet bathing suits.
Sunscreen - Please apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) on your camper each morning, and send a
labeled bottle of sunscreen in the camp bag for repeated applications throughout the day, every day.
Water Bottle – We suggest sending something that can be refilled, as campers take water breaks
regularly. Please avoid sending glass bottles. Juice boxes also work well, but we would suggest
freezing them the night before so that they remain cold. We recommend 3 juice boxes or a refillable
water bottle each day.
KOSHER and NUT-FREE Lunch - If your camper is enrolled in the lunch program their lunch will be
brought to them. If not, we ask that all lunches be Kosher and NUT FREE! The Jack and Pat Kay
Centre Camp has a strict no-sharing policy.
Two Kosher and Nut-Free Snacks – All campers (including those on the lunch program) must bring 2
snacks per day, as we have a morning and afternoon snack break.
Hat – We provide every camper with a camp hat and we encourage that they label it and bring it with
them to camp every day. Please note sun visors are NOT sufficient sun protection.
Running Shoes – We offer many active programs throughout the day which require proper running
shoes. Please avoid sending your camper in sandals or crocs.
NO Towels Needed – Our swim staff will be supplying all of our campers with towels every day so you
do not need to pack any towels.
Better Left At Home – Money, jewelry, cell phones, expensive/favourite clothing items, iPods,
collectables (cards, games), handheld video games, or any other valuables that risk getting broken or
lost at camp should be left at home.
To avoid disruption of group activities and to ensure the safety of all our campers and staff, we ask
that you come to the Camp Office with any messages, lunches or forgotten items for your camper. We
will have the items or messages delivered directly to your camper as soon as it is possible.
9
Items misplaced around the camp will be placed in the Lost and Found, which can be accessed in the
room next to the camp office. If items are properly labeled with your camper‟s first and last name, they
can be returned more easily! At the end of every session, all unclaimed items will be donated to a
charitable organization.
If you would like to purchase labels for your child(ren)s camp clothes
please visit www.centre.mabel.ca
Following tradition, we will once again be providing our campers with some
very cool camp gear. Our new look knapsacks, shirts and hats will be
distributed on the first day of each session. Limited edition shirts will be
available for purchase throughout the summer. Please remember to label all
of your campers camp gear as we will be unable to provide replacements if
they are lost.
THE JACK AND PAT KAY CENTRE CAMP IS NOT RESPONSIBLE
FOR ANY LOSS OR DAMAGE TO YOUR CAMPER’S PROPERTY,
SO PLEASE KEEP ALL VALUABLES AT HOME.
10
As we have a number of children and staff in camp with life-threatening peanut and nut allergies, we
urge that any products containing nut ingredients not be sent to camp. This also includes daily
snacks! The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp will adhere to this policy in the strictest sense and WILL
CONFISCATE ANY FOOD ITEMS THAT MAY CONTAIN TRACES OF NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS.
Please read all labels carefully and do NOT send snacks with the following:



If your camper has a summer birthday, we would be thrilled to celebrate their birthday at camp along
with all of their camp friends! Birthday celebrations with family members cannot be scheduled during
the camp day. With the increase in the number of campers with severe food allergies, The Jack and
Pat Kay Centre Camp has a „no sharing‟ policy. In order to ensure that all food is Kosher and nut-free,
all birthday desserts must be ordered through the camp office. Birthday snack (cupcakes) order
forms can be found online www.centrecamp.ca/forms. Orders must be placed at least one week
in advance.

(www.twitter.com/centrecamp). (instructions below)
Our twitter page has been designed especially for you in the summer. Following us on twitter will give

*The facebook site will be continually monitored by a senior staff member as much as possible; we
always recommend checking up on your camper’s internet activity regularly.
At The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, it is our goal to ensure that every young camper has the
opportunity to experience camp regardless of their family‟s financial situation. The Jack and Pat Kay
Centre Camp scholarship fund has also been set-up to help provide one-to-one support staff for
children with special needs, as well as families that are new to the country, low-income single parent
families, and other situations that may make attending camp difficult. If you would like to donate to the
Scholarship Fund, please visit www.centrecamp.ca/give
13
Medical information was included on your 2012 summer camp registration. The Ontario Camping
Association requires that children be admitted to camp ONLY with these health forms on file. If your
campers’ health information is not up to date, it must be received in the Camp Office
IMMEDIATELY! Please call us or email us at your earliest convenience.
Please do not send your camper to camp if he or she has a cold/fever or does not feel well in the
morning. An ill or injured child will be escorted to the nurses‟ office. When the health professionals
determine that a camper‟s illness or injury warrants it, families will be called and they are expected to
respond promptly.
1. If your camper has symptoms of illness (sniffles, coughs, stomach aches…).
2. Please notify the camp immediately if your camper has a contagious disease (i.e. chicken pox)
so that families of the other children in their group may be notified.
3. If your camper is found with lice, they will be sent home. The camp policy requires that a
camper is kept home 24 hours and have no nits upon returning to camp. Follow up treatment
MUST BE administered 7 - 10 days later. At this time the camp nurse must also check them.
HELP KEEP OUR CAMP SAFE: Please do not send any medication in a camper’s lunch or backpack.
(This includes over-the-counter medications, as well.)
The dispensing of medication by counsellors is not permitted. If it is essential, medication will be
given only by the Camp Directors or the Camp Nurse. Medication should be delivered to the director,
bus staff or office administrator's care. Medication may not be given to counsellors. Medication must
be in the original bottle with the child's name on it.
Medication to be dispensed must be accompanied by a written and signed note from the parent
which includes:
a.
Child's name;
b.
Name of the medication;
c.
Dosage;
d.
Time dosage is to be given;
e.
Any directives (e.g., must be with food);
f.
Medication side effects;
g.
Date on which medication is to begin and date on which it is to end.
Medication will not be given via telephone instructions. Medication will be stored with the Camp Nurse
or in a storage container in the refrigerator (if required).
14
We recommend that your camper be protected with sunscreen. It
is suggested that you use a long-lasting, water-resistant variety,
readily available in drug stores. Families should apply the lotion
BEFORE the campers leave home for camp. Also, please send
additional sunscreen to camp to be reapplied after swimming.
Sunscreens are made with chemicals that can irritate eyes and
skin if used improperly. Please ask your campers not to share their
sunscreen, as another child may have an allergic reaction to the one your campers use. We suggest
that each camper bring a hat to wear outside to help shield their faces from the sun. Please be sure
that the hat stays in your child‟s bag and is brought to camp every day.
If temperature or air quality necessitates changes in the regular schedule, outdoor activity will be
limited to periods of no more than 30-45 minutes at a time. Indoor locations for lunch will be provided.
Campers will be encouraged to take frequent water breaks. Field trip destinations may be changed
due to weather conditions. Some indoor activities may be substituted for outdoor group time as
conditions necessitate.
The JCCs of Greater Toronto and The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp view children as unique
individuals who will be given opportunities to learn new things, experience new challenges and
develop new skills (both physical and social), while feeling good about themselves. We believe this
can be accomplished most successfully in a relaxed, fun atmosphere, with the support provided to
bring out the best in every single camper.
Being a part of a group offers each child opportunities to share, work and play together; to strive for
common goals and to better understand the needs of others. Each camper also takes pride in the
group‟s achievements and recognizes the significance of his or her own contributions to the group‟s
success.
Bullying involves a person expressing his or her power through the humiliation of another person. The
JCCs of Greater Toronto and The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp support the rights of everyone to
participate and enjoy all activities, free from any form of bullying. We will make every reasonable effort
to promote awareness of the problem of bullying among all its participants, and to respond quickly and
effectively to complaints or disclosures of bullying.
All of your questions should be directed to the camp office. There are 2 full-time administrative staff in
the Camp Office at all times to answer phones and direct your calls; should you get the voicemail, it
simply means that all camp lines are being used. Please leave your message and your call will be
returned promptly. At The Jack and Pat Kay Centre Camp, our directors are actively involved in our
programs throughout the day, as your campers are very important to us. As a result, it is possible that
your calls will only be returned after the buses leave the camp site at 4:00pm. The Camp Office
closes at 6:00pm daily or after each bus has called in their safe arrival; any calls received after that
time will be returned the next morning. If you are trying to reach your child‟s counselors the easy way
to do so is by sending a note to camp with your camper.
