THE DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015 / VOLUME 14 ISSUE 10 Temple Chronicle C O N G R E G AT I O N FROM THE RABBI'S STUDY RABBI BARRY BLOCK Dear Friends: Have you heard the one about the Christmas Tree? It goes like this: The Christmas Tree is a pagan symbol, adopted by Christians as the religion spread to northern reaches, where the evergreen tree was a wintertime symbol of everlasting life. Only later was it vested with Christian meaning, standing for the cross. In other words, some people claim that Christmas is no more than a pagan holiday. They will go to lengths to demonstrate that Jesus couldn’t have been born on December 25, for example, and will decry the commercialization of the holiday. Those critics are wrong, of course. Christmas is a meaningful religious holiday for our Christian friends, relatives, and neighbors. That holiday is about God’s love for humanity, offering hope. Even if Christmas does now carry some symbols with pagan origins, its authentic religious meaning trumps the trappings. Even the commercialism is less important to most celebrants than family togetherness. And what about Chanukah? Might our December holiday, too, have pagan origins? Kindling lights around the time of the Winter Solstice has a distinctly pagan feel to it. Except that it doesn’t. Not in our experience. Just as the Christmas Tree holds religious significance to Christians, the Chanukah menorah offers bright religious light to us. We kindle the Chanukah lights to recall that the Maccabees kept the eternal flame burning, when oppressive leaders would have snuffed it out. We kindle the Chanukah lights to keep the flames of Judaism dancing in our own modern lives, surrounded by a culture that could seduce us away from our faith. One could say that our winter holiday, too, has become commercialized. As much as one could claim that Chanukah has pagan origins, we may be more worried about our holiday’s becoming an occasion to worship the idol of conspicuous consumption. A ray of hope: When I ask children about what they like best about Chanukah, only some of them answer, “the presents.” Many of them, especially the youngest and most honest, respond: “the menorah!” This December, let us regard the Christmas celebrations around us with love and respect for the people who rejoice in them. And first, let us celebrate the joyous religious message of the Chanukah lights. For most of our lives, we have been exposed to pictures of bearded men and traditionally dressed children studying Torah under the supervision of rabbis and other scholars. These images, often taken from movies and documentaries would seem to suggest that Torah study being done voluntarily is some sort of throwback to another place and time or something engaged in by Jews of more traditional upbringing than most of us. Indeed very few of us would share Rev Tevya's wish that "if I were rich I'd have the time that I lack to discuss the holy books 7 hours every day." Certainly this could not be a pleasurable experience to be engaged in voluntarily in these days. At least I can tell you that I felt that way. That is until I was exposed to Torah study classes at URJ biennial conventions and dragged along, sometimes kicking and screaming, by a good friend or family member. Only then did I began to appreciate that the Torah is really a pretty well written book or collection of books. That the Torah not only contains the stories from Genesis and Exodus that we all studied in religious school, but also lots of other not-sofamous stories and that each of these has lessons to teach which form the backbone of everything we understand to be good and ethical in the way we live our lives and treat each other. Now most of us probably think that we already know all that and that all the inhabitants of the world know the same thing. Unfortunately we now know that in many parts of our world this is not the case and that ethical behavior in these cultures seems cruel and hard to understand. Simply put, virtually all of what we accept as good and true comes from the Torah. Furthermore it is remarkable to me how many additional lessons can be gleaned from the thoughtful way the Torah is written. Could the writers really have been that clever? We know that the earliest mention of actual reading from Torah was by the prophet Ezra in the book of Jeremiah and that the final writing with vowels and cantillation marks was carried out by the Masoretes in about 600 CE. So for about the last millennium and a half, our teachers have been challenged to try to teach us all of the lessons contained therein. So why do I mention all of this now? Well, for a number of years our opportunities for Torah study have been somewhat limited. The Thursday noontime group has a small but loyal following but most folks can't attend then. Saturday morning service has set aside a small amount of time for discussion of the week's portion. But the amount of time that could actually be spent on in-depth Torah study has been limited. For the last 10 years or so some of us have looked forward to the time we could devote an hour or so to the study of each week's portion and that time has come. For the last 2 1/2 years Rabbi Lipper and now Rabbi Block have provided us with such an opportunity at 9:30 each Saturday morning. Rabbi Block's enthusiasm for teaching Torah is almost contagious and although he protests, he is a true Torah scholar. So why not join the 15-20 of our regulars for some coffee, fruit and a bagel as we fulfill the Mitzvah and learn some Torah? And for those of you who can't make it then, let me recommend 10 Minutes of Torah. Each Monday you will receive by email a discussion of the week's portion. The remaining 4 days also have Torah related articles from music to Israel which I think you'd also enjoy. Just go to URJ.org/10 Minutes to sign up. No advertisement or solicitation; just some good free learnin'. David Bauman Seasons of Mussar I Sundays, February 1 thru May 3 Thursdays, February 5 thru May 7 Created and led by Dr. Alan Morinis, facilitated by Rabbi Barry Block A Season of Mussar is a 13-week program that aims to help individuals find balance and strength in key inner traits that are essential for leading a fulfilling life, in worldly as well as spiritual matters. COURSE GOALS •To equip individuals with the tools of Jewish spiritual practice–the centuries-old Mussar practices that purify and elevate the traits of the soul •To create a supportive learning community in which participants can share and explore together •To strengthen the place of spirituality in the local Jewish community. THE PROGRAM Every week, over a 13-week period, each participant receives an email of teachings and practices focused on a single middah (soul-trait). This email contains an original composition that pulls together and interprets, in accessible language, traditional Mussar teachings on the trait in focus. Questions, exercises and suggestions are provided to prompt inquiry and insight. Every two weeks, Rabbi Block will lead a face-to-face meeting to address questions and practices focused on the middah of that week, and to discuss personal progress, insights and issues. Experience has shown that these meetings create powerful spiritual community, reinforcing commitment and deepening participants’ learning. Rabbi Block, an experienced Mussar facilitator, has been trained by Alan Morinis and The Mussar Institute to lead this program. In the period between group meetings, students are assigned materials to study with a chevruta, a learning partner to whom they are matched within the program. Each middah is studied for two weeks, so that 6 middot are studied in the full program (with the final week reserved for a conclusion). The middot covered in A Season of Mussar are humility, anger, gratitude, trust, honor, and alacrity. Fee: Registration for “A Season of Mussar” costs $100, payable to The Mussar Institute, none of which is paid to Congregation B’nai Israel. Rabbi Block is offered a modest fee for facilitating, which he does not accept personally, but which enables scholarships. Please contact Rabbi Block for confidential scholarship assistance. Shindler Senior Vice President Announcements The Hope - Modern Zionism and the Future of Judaism Facilitated by Phillip Spivey Sundays, December 7, 14, January 11, 10 – 11:30 a.m. THE TEMPLE CHRONICLE VOLUME 14 ISSUE 10 DECEMBER 2014/JANUARY 2015 PAGE 11 Shabbat in the Rock Chanukah Dinner and Party Friday, December 19 • 7:30 pm Following “Shabbat in the Rock, Chanukah Edition” all-music Shabbat for Chanukah In light of events transpiring in Israel and Jewish communities around the world, Zionism has become one of the most important and misunderstood of Jewish philosophical concepts. From its roots in Ancient Israel to the contemporary world, Zionism has evolved into many forms over the centuries as Jews have responded to the problems of anti-Semitism and the challenges of modern Jewish identity. “The Hope” will be a three-part course on the history of Zionism (Dec. 7); the different types of Zionism (Dec. 14); and a critical discussion of Zionism, Modern Israel, and the future of Jewish identity (Jan. 11). This three-part course will be important for those attending Rabbi Block’s discussion of Ari Shavit’s book, My Promised Land - The Triumph and Tragedy of Israel (Jan. 25). PLEASE help us plan accurately by making reservations Call Liz in the office – 225-9700 My Promised Land by Ari Shavit Friday, December 5, 7:00 pm, at Shabbat Dinner in the Social Hall following Shabbat Services, which will be abbreviated (no sermon) Sunday, February 8, 10:00 – 11:30 a.m. Book discussion facilitated by Rabbi Barry Block “Not since Thomas L. Friedman’s groundbreaking From Beirut to Jerusalem has a book captured the essence and the beating heart of the Middle East as keenly and dynamically as My Promised Land. Facing unprecedented internal and external pressures, Israel today is at a moment of existential crisis. Ari Shavit draws on interviews, historical documents, private diaries, and letters, as well as his own family’s story, illuminating the pivotal moments of the Zionist century to tell a riveting narrative that is larger than the sum of its parts: both personal and national, both deeply human and of profound historical dimension. As it examines the complexities and contradictions of the Israeli condition, My Promised Land asks difficult but important questions: Why did Israel come to be? How did it come to be? Can Israel survive? Culminating with an analysis of the issues and threats that Israel is currently facing, My Promised Land uses the defining events of the past to shed new light on the present. The result is a landmark portrait of a small, vibrant country living on the edge, whose identity and presence play a crucial role in today’s global political landscape.” Confirmation Class trip to Washington D.C. January 9 – 12, 2015 Students are excited to begin their L’Taken Social Justice Seminar experience accompanied by Rabbi Block and Ellyn Polsky. Throughout the weekend the 10th graders will be immersed in the social policy issues that are the focus of the URJ’s Religious Action Center’s activities. They will tour the Capitol building and hopefully the White House before the program actually begins. Visits to the Smithsonian and monuments on the mall will also be part of the weekend. On Monday, before returning to Little Rock, our students will present their Jewishly enriched arguments for social policy changes in areas about which they feel strongly, to our Arkansas representatives in congress. Adults $12 | Kids 6 and over $6 $3 surcharge at the door with no reservations “Men on Main and the Jewish Experience in Mid-20th Century Little Rock” See page 4 for details on the dinner Little Rock in 2014 is excited about its Main Street, on the rise after being nearly deserted for several decades. Our program participants remember it when it was the center of activity in the State. As recently as the mid-20th century, downtown Little Rock was so crowded on a Saturday morning that mothers had to hold their children’s hand for fear of becoming separated in the rush of shoppers. German Jews had settled in Little Rock just before and after the Civil War. Some among them had established what would become, for the next century, the largest department stores in Arkansas. These business leaders established the Temple, ran their companies, survived the great depression, and set examples in leadership in the overall Little Rock community. Our program presenters continued their forebears’ brand of community service and maintained high quality businesses through Main Street’s final hey-days of the 1950’s and early 60’s. This Temple program explores the story of the “Men on Main,” the women behind them, and the Jewish experience in mid-twentieth century Little Rock.” Moderator: Dick Williams Participants: Ginger Goodman, Don Pfeifer, Jim Pfeifer, Dan Phillips, Tad Phillips, and Alan Thalheimer LGBTQA Chavurah Chanukah Party Sunday, December 21st, 6:00 PM – 8:00 PM Temple B’nai Israel Teen Lounge Celebrate the 5th night of Chanukkah with the LGBTQA Chavurah!
