Mission Statement
The mission of the UC Santa Barbara Alumni Association is to serve the University, to involve UCSB alumni
and students in its affairs and to enlist alumni talents in the preservation and promotion of UC Santa
Barbara’s image, tradition, pride and status as a world-class university.
Cover photo: Through a light installation inspired by the LED blue light invented by Nobel Prize winner and UCSB professor Shuji
Nakamura, Pardall Tunnel illuminates the bridge between the UC Santa Barbara campus and the Isla Vista community in memory of
the victims of the 2014 tragedy. UCSB art professor Kim Yasuda brought together students through the Isla Vista OpenLab to create
this powerful visual tribute for Blunite, a program inviting local businesses, campus buildings and individual households to light up
their windows and structures every May. This annual movement expresses hope, solidarity and commitment to community.

ENGAGEMENT
Engaging Alumni,
Supporting the University
4
2014-15 Impact Report
“
The UC Santa Barbara Alumni Association is in good shape.
Student philanthropy has blossomed. This has culminated with the
transition of UCSB First, developed and built by the Alumni Association,
to the Office of Development, where it is growing and thriving. This is an
example of the continuing collaboration and nurturing of key relationships
between UC Santa Barbara Development and the Alumni Association. For
the last two years, alumni giving, hugely important to the future success of
our public university, has been the highest in alumni history.
Key initiatives discussed by our board
members include strategies and plans for
engaging and serving alumni now – and into
the future – which include the best use of our
facilities and programs, and the creation of
a road map for the important role the Alumni
Association will play in alumni professional
engagement, a direction designed to
support Gauchos for life, as their careers
and professional needs unfold and are
reimagined.
Of particular pride is the success of the All
Gaucho Reunion. This year was the biggest
ever – involving alumni in volunteer and
event activities at an unprecedented level.
At the All Gaucho Reunion last spring, I
had the pleasure of attending the Golden
Gaucho Reunion for the Classes of 1955 to
1965. During the luncheon, I was struck by
what they said about their experiences at
UC Santa Barbara. While they had different
specific memories, the essence of their
experience was the same as those students
graduating this year. They were happy – then
and now.
UCSB is ranked among the top institutions
of higher education as having the happiest
students in the nation.
I believe it. When it is said and done, isn’t that
what we want for ourselves and for our children?
All of us Gauchos, in in our own way, continue to
contribute to the sense of entwined community
that imbues our university and our students,
since Harvey Schechter rode his horse to the
Riviera campus. The ecosystem here supports
collaborative, intuitive, compassionate and
creative work.
Whatever is in the water here, is special. The
sense of place we all carry with us, make up
the collective feeling that ties us to UCSB, and
compels us forward in our own way.
I am proud to be a Gaucho. I bet you are all too.

SPOTLIGHT
UCSB FIRST
#GauchosGiveBack
The UCSB First team
is a group of highlymotivated students
united by their passion for UC Santa Barbara and
philanthropy. The group’s leadership was recently
honored with the Youth Philanthropist of the
Year award from the Association of Fundraising
Professionals from Santa Barbara County.
UCSB First exemplifies the spirit of collaboration
and giving fostered by the UC Santa Barbara
Alumni Association and now guided by the Office
of Development.
There is a strong sense of camaraderie during
UCSB First events – an energy cultivated by the
group’s immediate connection to University life.
“Giving to us can come in many forms – monetary,
service, time – and we encourage students to
consider what a powerful impact they can make,”
says Madison Frame, co-chair of UCSB First.
“Many students are shocked to hear that UC Santa
Barbara receives less than 15 percent funding
from the state – which is all the more reason for
Gauchos to give back after they graduate.”
Over 700 students attended UCSB First’s Senior
Legacy Day last year, upping participation by
49 percent from previous events. Two thousand
students attended the Spring Senior Breakfast
2014-15 UCSB First Co-Chairs Anne Hamner and
Jessica Fenton were awarded the "Youth Philanthropist
of the Year" award for all of Santa Barbara County.

held during the All Gaucho Reunion, where UCSB First
representatives presented on how the graduating class
could begin legacy giving through the Senior Class
Gift. UCSB First will be hosting two major events this
school year: the Philanthropy Awards Dinner and the
Senior Breakfast.
The group is also growing – with new positions on the
committee and an expansion of their outreach efforts.
“We strive for high event attendance and participation
rates because that means more students have heard
our messaging,” says Frame. “We’re finding that more
and more students have heard of UCSB First. This is
exciting for us.”

ALUMNI SCHOLARSHIP PROGRAM FUND
Live Like Regi Alumni Scholarship Fund
Created in memory of USMC captain and former Gaucho track
athlete Reginald “Regi” Jerome Johnson, ’94, the Live Like Regi
Alumni Scholarship Fund will support undergraduate UC Santa
Barbara students enrolled in the Reserve Officers’ Training
Corps (ROTC) and/or participants in an intercollegiate sport
who wish to focus on science, technology, engineering or math.
Hundreds of Johnson’s friends, family and those who served
with him in the military came together during the memorial
service earlier this year. Led by UC Santa Barbara alumni Alison
Morr, ’93, and Paula Cavagnaro, ’93, a core group of Johnson’s
closest connections decided to create a scholarship fund
to celebrate his life. “Regi was the type of guy who created
communities wherever he went,” says Cavagnaro who met
Johnson during his UC Santa Barbara days. “You could never
forget him.”
Johnson went to flight training school with Tim Grohman, who
now works as a pilot for Southwest Airlines. “He taught us how
to be a friend,” says Grohman. “He wanted everyone to be
included. He was all in, in everything he did.” Now, Johnson’s
friends are all in – to build up the scholarship fund with
donations and fundraising in order for other Gauchos to get
a chance to live like Regi. “I think he would be happy at how
many people came together to make this scholarship happen,”
says Grohman.

Since November 2014, Assistant Vice Chancellor for Alumni
Affairs, George Thurlow, has also served as Chancellor Yang’s
Special Assistant for Isla Vista. In that role, he has attended
more than one hundred community meetings involving selfgovernment, public safety and student housing. The Alumni
Affairs office also houses the Special Assistant’s staff person,

critical support services for the Isla Vista efforts, including
graphic design and mentoring through student internships and
financial support.
UC REACHES LONG-TERM AGREEMENT FOR MORE
FUNDING AND TUITION PREDICTABILITY
The University of California system received new revenue and
capped resident tuition at its current level over the next two
years. UC President Janet Napolitano and California Governor
Jerry Brown reached a historic agreement on a 4 percent base
budget increase for each of the next four years and a onetime infusion of $436 million from Proposition 2 funds for UC’s
pension obligation. Alumni played a major role in ensuring
adequate funding for the UC system by advocating for the
University through the Governor’s Office.
THE ANNUAL ADVOCACY RECEPTION WITH
CHANCELLOR HENRY YANG
Every year, the UC Santa Barbara Alumni
Association and Chancellor Henry Yang invites
students, alumni and administrators to the
Annual Advocacy Reception at Sacramento. The
gathering is a wonderful opportunity to engage in
important conversations about the future of UC
Santa Barbara.
THE CHANCELLOR’S MARCH RECEPTIONS
CONNECTING WITH THE BEST OF THE BEST
A number of alumni participated in our annual
Chancellor’s March Receptions where top
students are recruited to accept admissions
to UC Santa Barbara. Alumni join faculty, staff
and students in reaching out to some of the
top recruits among high school seniors. This
recruitment also includes efforts to recruit more
underrepresented minorities to UC Santa Barbara.
