A Guide to Bronx Arts & Entertainment
Message From Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion & Rafael A. Salaberrios, Chairman, The Bronx Tourism Council
It’s autumn in New York, and that means it’s one of the most exciting times to discover, or rediscover, the Bronx.
The new arts season kicks off with exhibits, musical performances and theatrical productions reflecting our borough’s - and our city’s - great cultural diversity. This season,
we celebrate national Italian Heritage Month, Hispanic Heritage Month and Puerto Rican Heritage, and you’re invited to free public events saluting the contributions these
cultures have made to New York City. You can also taste our ethnic richness at restaurants ranging from Zagat- and Michelin-rated fine dining to family-friendly eateries.
As the weather cools, nature beckons at attractions like Wave Hill and The New York Botanical Garden, which reach their most colorful peak in the fall. It’s also a great
time to take a kayak down the Bronx River; ride horseback through New York City’s largest park, Pelham Bay; or join 6,000 cyclists at New York State’s largest free ride, the
Tour de Bronx.
The Bronx is centrally located, so all these experiences are only minutes away. Wherever you are in the tri-state area, you can easily reach the Bronx by subway, bus, express
bus from Manhattan, Metro North or taxi.
For more information on what to do in the Bronx, visit the Bronx Tourism Council’s web site at www.ilovethebronx.com. The Bronx is waiting to delight you.

Celebrate All Things Latino
at the Bronx Hispanic Festival
N
ew York City goes Latin during National
Hispanic Heritage Month (September
15 – October 15), and the Bronx is the
epicenter of the celebration thanks to its
thriving Latino population.
One of the highlights of the month is the Bronx
Hispanic Festival (BHF), which will feature a variety of art, music, and cultural events to celebrate
Latinos in the Bronx. “Art is the key to any culture,”
says Luis Stephenberg, president and co-founder of
the BHF, which runs from September 12 to October
19 at various locations across the Bronx. This year’s
BHF features a Latin American Art Biennial, which
highlights work by some of the most talented artists
from the Bronx and from Latin America.
The Festival kicks off on Friday, September 12 at
the Bronx County Building with a ribbon cutting
by Bronx Borough President Adolfo Carrion. The
first exhibit, Escaping, opens September 16th at
the Lincoln Exhibition Space at Lincoln Hospital.
This exhibit focuses on work by artists who paint
to escape from the harsh reality of life in povertystricken Latin American countries. Escaping is a
“hopeful representation” of a dream reality. Some
of the other exhibits follow a similar theme, using
installations, poetry, painting, and other art forms
to communicate this common ideal.
Another group exhibition, Premonitions, can be
seen at the Gordon Parks Gallery at the College
of New Rochelle, John Cardinal O’Connor Bronx
campus, starting September 20. In this display,
artists explore the idea of predicting future events
based on past experiences. Many of the works in
the exhibit also focus on the relationship between
the past and the present.
Legends of Identity will open at the Boricua
College Bronx Center Exhibition Space on
September 26. The opening of the exhibit will be
preceded by an artists’ reception, which begins at
6pm. This display will focus on the cultural and
historical significance of the human figure.
While Stephenberg is a well-known Puerto
Rican artist, there is more to the Hispanic Festival
than just the arts. “It’s a responsibility as a Hispanic
in the United States to take initiative and to organize quality activities that focus on our cultural
values and our sports,” he said.
On that note, the festival will also feature huge,
raucous soccer games, theatre, movie festivals, and
more. On Hispanic Youth Day, Latino performances and theater will be brought to kids in various
local schools free of charge.
The festival will spread the word about Hispanic
films and books, as well. A celebration of Hispanic
short films, or Festival de Cine, will take place
at Lincoln Medical Center Exhibition Space at
Lincoln Hospital on September 25 at 6pm. This
will be an incredible opportunity to experience
amazing films from underrated Latino filmmakers.
Mr. Stephenberg says that by making positive
contributions to society and by sharing aspects of
the Latino culture, the Hispanic community can
achieve “a more constructive relationship with
other communities” and achieve a more positive
identity; organizers expect more than 15,000 individuals from diverse ethnic backgrounds to attend
the Festival’s events throughout the month.

hether you’re a
kid or a kid at
heart, the Bronx is
chock-full of Halloween fun for everyone. We’ve
got the scoop on everything from
family-friendly costume parades to
masquerade parties to the creepiest plants around. There are lots
of ways to make this October 31st
your most festive ever.
First stop? Boo at the Zoo!
This popular event draws crowds
of nearly 10,000 visitors a day to
the Bronx Zoo in October. This
year, the exhibit will run Oct. 1113, 18-19, and 25-26. “There are
so many activities; we appeal to all
the kids,” says the zoo’s Director of
Event Marketing, Rachel Libretti.
Libretti adds that it’s an especially
great activity for the seven and
under set because the event is more
fun than spooky.
While you’re at the Zoo, visit
the World of Reptiles and join
zoo-keepers for chats about these
cold-blooded and creepy critters.
The zoo-keepers will dispel all the
myths about eerie-looking snakes
and bats, pointing out their contributions to the environment, and
discuss how essential these creatures are to nature.
You’ll also see traditional aspects
of the Halloween season in their
exhibits and educational programs.
Pumpkins, for example, become an
enrichment tool through which
visitors can learn more about the
zoo’s animals. Visitors are encouraged to carve pumpkins, which are
then placed into various animals’
homes for everyone to observe.
“You will get to see how the tigers
handle pumpkins,” said Libretti,
“and it’s really funny and neat
to see the monkeys run through
them.” Ultimately, these activities foster appreciation and understanding of wildlife—a great thing
for any child or adult to experience,
Halloween or not.
Other Boo at the Zoo activities? Magic shows, face painting,
costume parades, hayrides, spooky
story-telling, and much more.

A Guide to Bronx Arts & Entertainment
Come to Boo at the Zoo at the Bronx Zoo for three fun-filled
weekends of family-friendly Halloween activities.
If you and your little ones are
looking for arts and crafts, look no
further than the Wave Hill Public
Garden and Cultural Center.
Wave Hill’s Saturday Family Art
Project takes on a spooky feel just
in time for Halloween with the
help of artist Tamalyn Miller, who
will be exhibiting in Wave Hill’s
Sunroom gallery space.
Miller’s display takes place in
a dark room lit only by blacklights
to highlight the creepy qualities
of plants in the nightshade family. Kids (and adults!) who come
to Wave Hill on Oct. 25 and 26
will, with Miller’s help, make fun
glow-in-the-dark Halloween masks
out of photo luminescent paint and
plants.
“It’s great for adults to be able
to check out the exhibition with
their kids,” said Courtney White,
Wave Hill’s Director of Education.
“They can also create something
themselves to take home with
them, or perhaps get inspiration
for their own Halloween costumes.
It’s also a really unique opportunity to work with this artist,” she
said. An added plus? This event is
sponsored by Spirit Halloween—so
it’s completely free of charge with
general admission.
After creating their own unique
masks, kids will get to parade
around the grounds in their “magical, otherworldly” masks in celebration of the season. “You can
make a jack-o-lantern anywhere,
but to make a glow–in-the-dark
Halloween mask, is really special
and different,” White said.
Parades are always a Halloween
tradition, and the 23rd Annual
South Bronx Halloween Parade,
on October 24th is a must. Meet
at 5:30pm on Simpson St. between
E. 163rd St. and Westchester Ave.
to take part in the festivities. This
year’s theme is The Future is Here,
Be a Part of It, so dress up in your
most futuristic looking attire and
win prizes for best costume.
If you’re looking for a smaller
Halloween Parade, or if you have
young children, the City Island
Halloween Parade is a great alternative. This parade “has a real
small-town feel to it,” says Skip
Giacco, who helps organize the
parade. “It’s a lot of neighborhood kids with their parents,” he
continues, citing the parade’s “oldfashioned” vibe as a contributor to
its popularity.
“The City Island Parade is very
relaxed, fun, and comfortable,”
he states. In addition, says Paul
Klein, Vice President of the City
Island Chamber of Commerce,
this parade is totally “appropriate
for small children and pets.” Plus,
kids involved in the parade will
get a chance to collect candy from
stores on City Island Ave. before
the parade.

bed, head on over to Bronx favorite

C
onveniently located near Yankee Stadium, the Bronx Visitors
Center makes it easy to pick up
information on Bronx attractions you don’t want to miss.
In addition to providing literature on
world-famous destinations like the Bronx
Zoo, the New York Botanical Garden and,
of course, Yankee Stadium, the kiosk helps
visitors learn about great places like Wave
Hill, the Bronx Museum of the Arts and
four Historic House Trust museums as well
as information on the 2 free monthly trolley routes and much more. In addition, you
can pick up a copy of the Bronx Tourism
Council’s quarterly arts and entertainment
guide, BX 360°, which lists all there is to
see and do in the borough and features
stories on upcoming concerts, theatrical
performances, art exhibits, and outdoor
celebrations.
The kiosk is located in the lobby of 198
E. 161st Street, at Sheridan Avenue, across
the street from the Bronx Hall of Justice.
It is accessible 7 days a week, 8am – 6pm.

State’s Largest Free Bicycling Event
Sunday, October 19
O
ver 6,000 bicyclists will take to
Bronx streets, parklands, waterfront, greenway paths and
historic districts when they
ride in Tour de Bronx, New York State’s
largest free bicycling event, taking place
Sunday, October 19th.
Hosted by Bronx Borough President
Adolfo Carrion and Transportation
Alternatives with support from Montefiore
Medical Center and St. Barnabas Hospital,
the 14th annual ride is the only one of its
type, bringing together cyclists of all ages
and skill levels from throughout the tri-state
area and beyond.
Cyclists choose a 25-mile route with riding escorts or a faster 40-mile route for more
seasoned riders. There are several convenient starting locations and rest stops with
snacks and refreshments along the way.
“Every year this event gets bigger and
bigger. I am so proud to ride through the
great streets of the Bronx with over 6,000
bike enthusiasts and show off this great
borough,” stated Carrion, who is an avid
cyclist. “People must understand the benefits
of biking for both their health and for the
environment. Biking is common sense.”
Following the ride, cyclists relax at the
Tour de Bronx Festival at the world-famous
New York Botanical Garden featuring a live
steel drum band courtesy of the New York
Daily News and free pizza from Domino’s
Pizza.
Riders can learn more and register online at www.tourdebronx.org or by calling

A Guide to Bronx Arts & Entertainment
Nature Takes Center Stage at Bronx Art Exhibit
T
he Bronx is blossoming—and
its transformation has not gone
unnoticed. A collaborative
photography exhibit at some of
the borough’s most well-known artistic and
environmental institutions showcases just
what the buzz is all about. Entitled Surprisingly Natural: The Nature of the Bronx,
the display is a varied collection of photos
highlighting spectacular natural beauty in
the Bronx. Works from the collection can
be viewed at Wave Hill, the Lehman College Art Gallery, and the Bronx River Art
Center, September 9th through December
15th.
The project sheds light on some of the
Bronx’s scenic yet often unappreciated landscapes. The most photographed New York
City landmarks are usually iconic images like
the Brooklyn Bridge and the Manhattan skyline, said Jennifer McGregor, Senior Curator
at Wave Hill. Previously, “photography of
the Bronx has focused on either its blight
or its vibrant street life,” she stated. Those
involved hope that this exhibit can spread
excitement and boost awareness about the
Bronx’s copious natural beauty.
Jose Ruiz, Curator at the Bronx River
Art Center (BRAC), describes the Bronx as
a “co-existence of the natural and the artificial”. In fact, while the borough may have
its fair share of train tracks and industrial
areas, 25% of the Bronx is actually parkland. Photographs of Van Cortlandt Park
and Pelham Bay Park depict the startlingly
varied terrain-- everything from forests to
wetlands to beach habitats abound.
Pictures taken elsewhere, however—outside the verdant, leafy beauty of the parks—
are just as impressive, albeit in a different
way. Nature’s tenacity is depicted in images
of unexpected green spaces—empty lots and
community gardens, for example– where
natural life thrives despite the challenge of
urban conditions.
“The images underscore a contemporary
interest in uncovering the overlooked and
seeking out the beauty in the shadows,” says
McGregor. One exhibit at BRAC focuses on
the history of beekeeping in the Bronx—and

on the activity’s progression from its original
place in a rural environment to its current,
surprising place in the city.
Another exhibit at BRAC, entitled
Bronx Guerillas, was inspired by the practice of guerilla gardening. Ruiz explains
that according to Laura Napier, the artist
behind the exhibit, “guerilla gardening is an
international, alternative movement driven
by covertly planting in fenced-off empty lots,
cracks in sidewalks, and other unauthorized
territories.” Napier’s exhibition focuses on
guerilla gardens in the Bronx, and on her
own guerilla gardening.
At Wave Hill, the New York Archipelago
project documents New York’s “38 small
islands and island communities.” Says
McGregor: “The photographs celebrate both
the persistence of nature, such as the ancient
boulders deposited during the last ice age,
and the life that exists in the midst of a
natural setting. The project reopens a view
of the city as an archipelago, or collection
of islands, that was the early settlers’ first
impression of the region.”
The Gorge exhibit depicts the struggle
between nature and manmade obstructions.
In a series of photographs, we see the “longterm struggle between a tree and a chain
link fence in which the force of the tree’s
growth ultimately overcomes the fence,”
said McGregor, and “…in Demolish, a tree
thrusts up willfully through concrete pavement in an abandoned corner of Pelham
Bay Park.”
At the Lehman College Art Gallery, artist
Rebecca Swanson displays her photographs
of a misty daybreak at the Metro-North
Spuyten-Duyvil train station. Swanson
manages to capture the breath-taking golden
dapples of early-morning radiance that light
the peaceful, still moment.
Robert Stephenson’s works at the Lehman
College Art Gallery focuses on the push and
pull between the natural and the unnatural.
Stephenson’s goal is to highlight nature’s
persistence and man’s attempts to control
it. His works highlight this interplay at the
Bronx Whitestone Bridge and Pugsley Creek
Park area. One of his photographs shows a
chain-link fence that has been broken by
a boulder—representing a failed effort to
“separate the domesticated from the wild.”
All three locations will be displaying a
number of other works, ranging from photographs of nature in the Bronx to images
of its residents. “We hope that Surprisingly
Natural will inspire visitors to contemplate
the nature in their neighborhoods with a
fresh eye and optimism,” said McGregor.
