Spring 2007 - Le Bonheur Children`s Hospital
Spring 2007 2006 2006 A Magazine For Friends of Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center Highlights & Milestones Heart of the Matter Dear Friends of Le Bonheur, W ith this issue of Le Bonheur magazine, we begin a new tradition of recognizing the essential role played by our special donors. We deeply appreciate every individual, company and organization that has supported Le Bonheur this past calendar year. Their generosity helped fund countless projects, in particular the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center hospital and campus. Construction of this wonderful new complex will begin next spring, and will be completed by 2011. You will read the names of many of these special friends in the following pages in our 2006 Donor Report. This issue also shares the accomplishments, achievements and milestones of our medical staff and associates over the past year that have made incredible differences in the lives of countless children. The future is very bright for Le Bonheur and, in turn, for the 137,000plus children from 47 states who came through our doors last year. The reason is simple: Le Bonheur provides superb diagnostics and medical treatment along with an extra large dose of loving care. So many wonderful things are underway. Groundbreaking for our new hospital and medical campus will take place. Additional outLarry Woodard and Anaya Scott standing physicians will be added to our medical staff. More parents will become aware of the excellent care that’s available at Le Bonheur. And, best of all, more children will be healed and go on to live lives full of promise. Many of you are aware, too, that Meri Armour joined our team as the new President and Chief Executive Officer of Le Bonheur. She replaces former president Peggy Troy, who is now Chief Operating Officer at Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. As an experienced nurse who has an MSN and an MBA, Meri brings a wealth of expertise and a passion for children’s issues. Meri relocated here from Cleveland, Ohio, where she most recently served as senior vice president and general manager of Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital, MacDonald Hospital for Women and Ireland Cancer Center. All three hospitals are part of the University Hospitals Health System/University Hospitals of Cleveland, which she joined in 1995. I hope you’ll soon have an opportunity to meet Meri. She is known for her communication skills, progressive leadership, successful fundraising and dynamic partnerships with physicians and staff. Meri Armour So, as we approach the future guided by our new leader, we want to assure you, our valued friends, that the “new” Le Bonheur will be a highly sophisticated and comprehensive pediatric medical center ready to provide the highest level of medical excellence to the children. At the same time, we will offer specialized facilities and services for the family members of our young patients. Not only do we feel that the children deserve true excellence in their medical care, but we also feel a deep commitment to caring for our families. It’s amazing what can happen when we join together. Children get better or get well. Some even get a second chance at life itself. All of us at Le Bonheur thank you. Never can we say that enough. In this year “ata-glance,” you’ll learn about numerous achievements, advancements and plans for Le Bonheur’s future. With your help and continued financial leadership during 2007 and beyond, our vision to become a top 10 children’s hospital can become a reality. January The Parent Resource Center opened to parents and care givers of patients on the ground floor of the hospital, providing a private location with computers for families to check emails or to research their child’s diagnosis and treatment options. February Le Bonheur President and CEO Peggy Troy assumed her new role as Chief Operating Officer of Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare. While Troy continued to lead Le Bonheur in the interim, a national search was begun to find her replacement. March Online registration became available for patients who have procedures or appointments at Le Bonheur. This can now be done from any home or office computer, making it extremely convenient to access at any time throughout the day or night. the present structure will be torn down and construction of the new Le Bonheur will begin. Groundbreaking for the new Le Bonheur hospital is scheduled for early 2008. May Le Bonheur’s Web site has a fresh look, providing more up-to-date content, improved navigation and a new graphic design. Log on to www.lebonheur.org to see for yourself. The Sleep Disorder Center passed reaccreditation and was granted status for another five years by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine. June Le Bonheur changed phone numbers to the 287 prefix, making the new main hospital phone number 287-KIDS. On June 15, Le Bonheur turned 54, celebrating over half a century treating children of the region. Le Bonheur Early Intervention and Development (LEAD) in Jackson, Tenn., earned accreditation from the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC), the nation’s leading organization of early childhood professionals. To earn NAEYC accreditation, a self-study is conducted to determine how well the program meets the standards. After necessary improvements are made, the program is then observed by independent, professional validators and reviewed by a national panel. Programs are accredited for a five-year period. July Methodist Le Bonheur Associates came together in a collective effort for the “Let’s Pull Together” campaign and pledged more than $1.3 million toward the new hospital. This campaign was one of the largest employee campaigns of any children’s hospital in the country. For the first time in a decade, pediatric cardiology fellows began working at Le Bonheur. The fellowship lasts three years and accepts two new fellows each year. When in full swing, there will be six pediatric cardiology fellows practicing at Le Bonheur. With your help and continued financial leadership during 2007 and beyond, our vision to become a top 10 children’s hospital can become a reality. Austin Cole 5 w w w . l e b o n h e u r . o r g April The Surgical Brain Tumor Program at Le Bonheur led the nation in performing the highest volume of brain tumor surgeries. Le Bonheur’s second Catheterization Lab opened, offering the newest technology for patient care. The $1.5 million fluoroscopy unit was funded in part by a federal grant of nearly $1 million from the Department of Health and Human Services Health Resources and Services Administration. CN, one of the largest railroads in North America, donated $1 million to Le Bonheur for child safety programs and building the new hospital. Le Bonheur took another step toward expansion on April 27 with the groundbreaking of the new Memphis Mental Health Institute (MMHI). The new MMHI facility is part of an overall expansion of health care services in the Memphis Medical District and will enable the “new” Le Bonheur to be built on the former MMHI site. Once the new MMHI facility is completed and its patients relocated, The newest component of Le Bonheur’s family-centered care initiative was launched with the offering of free, private and personalized Web pages to help patients and families stay in touch with loved ones and keep them updated during hospital stays. CarePages allows patients and families to post pictures and information online through a fully secured, password protected site that will remain active as long as the patient and family need it, even after they have been discharged from Le Bonheur. You can visit the web site at www.CarePages.com. Le Bonheur became the first hospital in West Tennessee to add cryoblation procedures in its Catheterization Lab. The procedure lowers risk and raises quality in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia. Dr. Umar Boston, a heart transplant specialist, joined Le Bonheur’s pediatric cardiothoracic surgery department. He attended medical school at Howard University in Washington, D.C., and completed his general surgery residency and cardiothoracic surgery residency at Mayo Clinic. August The new Dining on Call program debuted, allowing Le Bonheur patients to September Bob Duncan, vice president of Advocacy & Government Relations, and Dr. James Wheless, chief of Pediatric Neurology at The University of Tennessee Health Science Center and director of Le Bonheur’s Comprehensive Epilepsy Program and Neuroscience Institute, were among 20 finalists selected for the eighth annual Healthcare Heroes Awards sponsored by the Memphis Business Journal. Le Bonheur sonographers Angela Morelli and Sharon Myers earned certification in fetal echocardiography, making them two of only a small handful of people in Tennessee with this certification. Fetal echocardiograms enable physicians to better plan and coordinate the care of the child. October A Certificate of Need was approved by the State of Tennessee’s Health Services and Development Agency for a state-ofthe-art magnetocephalography (MEG) laboratory at Le Bonheur. The MEG is a clinical first for a five-state area including Tennessee, Arkansas, Mississippi, Kentucky and Oklahoma. Le Bonheur is only the third pediatric medical center in the Methodist Le Bonheur Associates came together in a collective effort for the “Let’s Pull Together” campaign... one of the largest employee campaigns of any children’s hospital in the country. L e Bonheu r • Sp ring 2007 eat what they want, when they want and as often as they want within the parameters of the diet prescribed by their physicians. Patients may now order meals by telephone, similar to room service at a hotel, from a restaurant-style menu. Le Bonheur is one of only a few children’s hospitals in the country to offer such a program. A new professorship in clinical pharmacy was created by the generous gift of retired Chairman and CEO of Accredo Health David Stevens and his wife, Debbie. The new role expands Le Bonheur’s Pharmaceutical Department, augments educational programs and enhances the relationship between Le Bonheur and The University of Tennessee Health Science Center Colleges of Pharmacy, Nursing and Medicine. 6 United States to house a MEG lab. The Urban Child Institute (formerly LHS, Inc., the previous parent company of LBCMC) donated $2.9 million to purchase the MEG. During a live webcast, surgeons at Le Bonheur’s Neuroscience Institute performed a pediatric hemispherectomy on a young patient. The procedure was seen live by about 3,000 viewers. Hemispherectomy is the surgical removal and disconnection of one side of the brain from the other. The surgery is performed in children who have a damaged cerebral hemi- sphere that causes epilepsy. By year’s end, 11,000 screenings of the webcast had been tracked. The Healthy Families Program at the Center for Children and Parents, coordinated by Le Bonheur, received credentialing from Healthy Families America, the national initiative sponsored by Prevent Child Abuse America, the nation’s leading child abuse prevention organization. This accomplishment follows an intensive twoyear process. Only two other programs in Tennessee have been credentialed. Healthy Families is a home-visitation program that assists first-time teen mothers age 19 or younger. Services continue until the baby is at least three years old, and clients may voluntarily receive services until the child enters kindergarten. There are no fees to participate. Last year the program provided services to 268 mothers and 329 children. November Meri Armour was announced as the new President and CEO of Le Bonheur. Armour was senior vice president and general manager of Rainbow Babies and Children’s Hospital in Cleveland, Ohio. The Physicians’ Campaign portion of the capital campaign kicked off. New technology allows technicians in Le Bonheur’s EEG department to monitor spinal cord surgeries more closely than ever before. This includes monitoring of both motor and sensory functions of the spinal cord while a patient is in surgery. Le Bonheur is the only hospital in Memphis that offers this procedure. December The Certificate of Need (CON) for the new hospital received unanimous approval from the Health Services and Development Agency in Nashville. Construction of the $327 million state-of-the-art facility for Le Bonheur will take place on the site of the Memphis Mental Health Institute (MMHI) at the corner of Poplar and Dunlap and is slated for fall 2011 completion. The third phase of the capital campaign advertising campaign launched on Christmas Day. Y P Dr. Joel Lutterman teases Le Bonheur heart patient Madeline Flack, 2. Le Bonheur at Forefront of Family-Centered Care P atients at Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center are at the forefront of a movement that is changing the way health care is delivered. This system is called family-centered care, and Le Bonheur is currently incorporating these principles into daily hospital practices. “In family-centered care, medical staff and family members work together as collaborators in the best interest of the child,” explains Le Bonheur’s Administrative Director of Family Services, Janet Phillips, about this new care-giving technique. “While medical personnel may fluctuate, the family is the constant in a child’s life, and they deserve to be partners in all aspects of their child’s care. Care is based on a continuous healing relationship, and treatment plans are made together with the family and customized according to the patient’s needs and values.” At the very heart of family-centered care is the recognition that health care providers and the family team up and work together to best meet the needs of the child. The family’s insight can enhance the professional staff ’s technical knowledge and improve care because this principle acknowledges that families are experts in their child’s care. For this reason, family-centered care requires trust and respect for each family’s values, beliefs, religious and cultural background. “It is a continual pursuit of being responsive to the priorities and choices of families,” Phillips says. “We support and empower family members as partners and decision-makers in their child’s care and help them cope more confidently with their child’s illness.” In family-centered care, patients and families decide how they will participate in care and decision making. They are provided with the information they need to make educated choices about treatment, and this information exchange builds trust and contributes to the partnership between families and caregivers. “When families understand their options, they feel less vulnerable about their child’s hospital experience,” Phillips says. “When they are encouraged to participate in their child’s care and care planning, they become more effective regarding medical decisions.” Phillips notes that this may include participating in rounds and pain management plans, and helping with tracheotomy or gastronomy care, so they can become comfortable with those activities before leaving the hospital. “We want to ensure that family members are allowed to remain with their child at all times, under all circumstances, in accordance with their wishes,” Phillips adds. “We support our families by respecting their decisions, offering comfort as they cope with the child’s illness, and meeting the social, developmental and emotional needs of their child.” Even though the practice of family-centered care is still a relatively new concept, Le Bonheur is a leader in its development and implementation. “Le Bonheur Associates have eagerly embraced the concepts of family-centered care, with many aspects already being practiced at the hospital,” said Phillips. “We are well on our way to transforming the culture and making parents partners in all that we do.” Y Whether it’s room service or Web pages, Le Bonheur is always looking for ways to bring practical family-centered care to patients and their families. To this end, the hospital has launched two new programs aimed at doing just that, by providing families with even more comforts of home from their child’s hospital room. The first program, CarePages, offers free, private, personalized Web pages to patients and their families to help them stay in touch with loved ones during a hospital stay, or anytime care giving is needed. The service gives families greater control over communication and makes it easier to keep in touch with other family members and friends. CarePages users agree. “The CarePage helps continued on page 8 7 ww ww ww .. l l ee bb oo nn hh ee uu rr .. oo rr gg Web Pages & Room Service Abound continued from page 7 Interpreters Translate For Hispanic Patients Leticia Tinoco, a Spanish interpreter for Le Bonheur, meets with Reyna Portesgil to explain hospital procedures and answer questions regarding the care of her infant son, Oscar. L e Bonheur’s Spanish interpreters never know what their day will bring. Leticia Tinoco may bounce from outpatient services to the Bunny Room, while her associate, Julio Cepeda, may be called to a patient’s room or rush to the Emergency Department after hours. Their services are all in an effort to aid the hospital’s growing segment of Hispanic, non-English speaking patients. Since 2005, Le Bonheur has offered Spanish interpretation services five days a week to patients receiving understand something vital – such as a consent form – it can open up a number of problems.” Tinoco adds that the interpreter’s role is about more than just language; it also provides a cultural bridge. “In many Latin American countries, no prescription is needed to purchase antibiotics,” Tinoco explained. “A Hispanic family may need extra explanation when a doctor says the child has a virus and no medicines will be given.” The role of interpreter is only to interpret, said “If the patient’s parent does not understand something vital – such as a consent form – it can open up a number of problems.” L e Bonheu r • Sp ring 2007 care in the hospital and the ambulatory clinics from 7:30 a.m. to 10:30 p.m. On-call services are available during weekends for cases of abuse, trauma or death. As the hospital’s Spanish-speaking patient base continues to grow, the interpreters are becoming more important. In 2004, Le Bonheur treated approximately 3,500 Hispanic patients. That number has increased almost 30 percent annually. In 2006, Hispanic children treated as inpatients, outpatients, or for clinic and urgent care needs reached 5,400. “If health care providers are not fluent in Spanish, they shouldn’t try to communicate with the parents,” advises Cepeda. “Staff should always use the interpreter,” he says, noting that good communication between providers and parents is necessary for excellence in quality care. “If the patient’s parent does not 8 Tinoco. “It is the health care provider’s responsibility to obtain medical history. The interpreter is there to interpret. It is not advisable to use children or family members as interpreters because they may not convey everything that is said or may add their own opinions.” Tinoco grew up in northern Mexico, but has lived in Memphis for 30 years. Before becoming an interpreter at Le Bonheur, she worked for five years with Hispanic families as a pastoral associate for multicultural ministry at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Midtown. Cepeda was born in Chile, but spent much of his childhood and adult life in Argentina. He is a retired chemical engineer who most recently worked for International Paper as the export manager for Latin America. He has a master’s degree in pulp and paper engineering from McGill University in Montreal, Canada. Y— By Leigh Ann Roman me feel connected to the family when I can’t be with them in their time of need. It’s a great way to let them know how much they are thought about during this time,” said one family’s friend. “What a blessing it is to know that I can get updates on my friend’s child and send encouraging words without taking up so much of their precious time,” added another. Specifically, CarePages allows families the chance to post updates, pictures, contact information and even visiting hours - a service that can reduce the amount of time family and hospital staff spend relaying the information. The service is free to Le Bonheur patient families, fully secure, password protected and complies with all patient privacy regulations. CarePages is available from the patient’s room, at the Parent Resource Center in the hospital, at home or any place Internet access is available. The second program, Dining on Call, allows our patients to eat what they want, when they want, and as often as they want, within the parameters of the diet ordered by their physicians. Think of it as room service for the patient. When a patient is hungry, his or her parent can dial up a nutrition operator and order from a restaurantstyle menu. The nutritionist ensures the foods ordered comply with the patient’s diet. Once the patient places an order, the meal is delivered to the patient’s room within 45 minutes. Le Bonheur is one of only a few children’s hospitals around the country to offer this special meal service. In fact, several times a day. I’m talking about “wonderful things.” Not a day goes by without the lives of a large number of infants and children changing for the better in remarkable ways. However, there are some we still can’t make as well as we wish, because medicine doesn’t have all the answers. But we never, never give up! And it is for that reason I am excited to say that another wonderful thing is getting closer with each passing day. I’m talking about the start of construction of the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center in early 2008. What a day that will be. Our bold dream will become reality. Then, in early 2010, we will be able to take care of a greater number of children, plus accelerate our search for new and better ways to bring healing with more space for research. As you may know, we are in the midst of a $100 million campaign for the new hospital, which will cost $327 million. In addition to the campaign, $100 million will be obtained through the sale of bonds, and the remaining portion will be funded by Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare from capital reserves. Currently, we have raised more than $61 million. And with each gift we receive, there is a feeling of inspiration, because we know we are not just building a building. And the “new” Le Bonheur will be more than bricks and mortar. It will be a place where countless young lives will be made better…new answers found through research…and medical education provided to future doctors and other health professionals. Above all, we’re building for the future of our children. For their children. And the children to follow. Because of your special friendship with Le Bonheur, we know you believe we are a good investment and a valuable resource and, we hope, worthy of future support. We also want you to know that our partnership with you means so much to us. Most of all, as I have said before, it means healing and hope to our young patients and to the members of their families. If you think you might be interested in knowing more about the “new” Le Bonheur or some of the ways you can support this project or about the numerous Naming Opportunities, which enable people to place their name(s) on a room, unit, etc., or honor or memorialize someone very special, simply call me at (901) 287-5018 or send an e-mail to [email protected]. Together, we can build on Le Bonheur’s tradition of excellence in pediatric health care, as well as our reputation of providing large doses of loving attention to every child. We deeply appreciate every individual, organization and company that supported Le Bonheur during 2006. Your generosity will not be forgotten. Where Do Your Contributions Go? If you made an undesignated gift to Le Bonheur last year, we used it where it was most needed. The following are examples of items your generosity helped us purchase: • A flexible scope used to remove foreign objects from the airways of infants • A special device used to stop bleeding during complicated brain surgeries • Microscopes for diagnosis and research • A deep vein finder to reduce the trauma associated with establishing IV lines • Blanket warmers for children after surgery These are only a very few illustrations of how your contributions have helped the children and families. Your gifts have made so much possible for all the children who needed our care in 2006. No matter the size of your gift, you can relish the knowledge that you, too, share in the joy when a child goes home well from Le Bonheur. Thank You! The Donor Report lists our valued supporters who made cumulative gifts of at least $50 in cash, pledges or pledge payments in the preceding year. Zwick Le Bonheur Leaders ($1,000 & above) are noted in bold italics. New Hospital Construction On Track The Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center building project is on track as scheduled, with groundbreaking planned for early 2008, following demolition of the Memphis Mental Health Institute in September. Construction of the new Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center will begin next year, with the entire project, including renovation of several existing structures, completed by fall 2011. Construction cost is now at $327 million, as a result of the decision to add certain facilities back in the project due to current and long-term patient needs. Additionally, Hurricane Katrina brought about significant increases in the costs of bulding materials. The public campaign goal remains at $100 million, with another $100 million to be obtained through the sale of bonds. The remaining portion, which is to be funded by Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare from capital reserves, is $127 million. One additional operating room will require very specialized construction techniques and materials to house a new piece of imaging equipment called Intra-operative Magnetic Resonance Imaging. The State of Tennessee requires that the insurance costs related to bond financing must be included as well, which along with the above noted items, brings the construction total to $327 million. Fundraising activities continue in a very aggressive manner. Currently, the Le Bonheur Foundation has raised more than $61 million of the $100 million goal. The list of general contributors ($50+) to Le Bonheur’s Capital Campaign through Dec. 31, 2006, follows. Capital Gifts from $50 Mr. Rob B. Leary Associates “Pull Together” for Campaign More than $1.3 million was raised for the capital campaign by Methodist Le Bonheur Associates in the “Let’s Pull Together” campaign. The six-week fundraising drive generated gifts and pledges toward the campaign that will build a “Room of Magic” movie theater for patients and their families in the new hospital. The state-of-the-art movie theater will show first-run movies. Complete with surround sound and high-definition projection system, the theater will be designed to accommodate IV equipment, wheelchairs and other needs so that children can enjoy a welcome break from their hospital routine and watch movies in a real theater environment. This campaign was one of the largest employee campaigns of any children’s hospital in the country. The list below recognizes every Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Associate who made a contribution toward the new facility. Shuburte Robert Silver ? Did You Know Le Bonheur has one of the largest spinal tumor programs in the country. • Approximately 70,000 children were seen at Le Bonheur’s 45 outpatient clinics during 2006. • Le Bonheur performs over 7,500 surgeries each year. • Last year, Le Bonheur’s Emergency Department cared for more than 68,000 children, making it one of the 10 busiest pediatric emergency departments in the United States. Nowhere else in Tennessee is there a pediatric ED with board-certified pediatricians available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week. • The first pediatric open-heart surgery in the region was performed at Le Bonheur in 1959. • Le Bonheur is the only hospital in West Tennessee to offer cryablation, a procedure which lowers risk and raises quality in the treatment of cardiac arrhythmia. • Teresa A. Y ÀÊÌ i Ûi Giving i iÕÀ v From the Heart By Kini Kedigh Plumlee “ I This is what I envisioned all those years ago.” As the “backbone” of the unit, Clint stays busy doing “just about anything” the staff asks him to do. He begins most days at 8:30 a.m., checking to see which nurses are on duty and which babies in the unit have been fed. If any of the Unit’s Patient Care Coordinators need help in preparing formula or with feeding, he’s up for the task. Clint also picks up supplies for the SCU, delivers specimens to the lab, and hugs, rocks and sings to the little ones. He’s even changed his share of diapers through the years. In 2003, Clint was the recipient of the Methodist Healthcare Living Award and in 2005, Le Bonheur presented him with an award recognizing his 10,000 hours of volunteer service. Reflecting upon his monthly gifts to the hospital, as well as his long-term bequest, Clint said, “I believe my contributions will be used by Le Bonheur in a very meaningful manner. Perhaps some of it will even go into the new hospital. I encourage others to consider leaving their assets where they will be put to good use. In my opinion, that place is Le Bonheur.” Y Volunteer Clint Trusty with Kaleb Brown, a patient in Le Bonheur’s Special Care Unit. — As Easy As A-B-C Many people find it easy to delay making a will. They find it easy to procrastinate because they think estate planning is hard. But really, it’s not all that difficult. In most cases, creating a will can be as simple as ABC! Next, estimate the value of your assets and deduct what you owe. This will give you a rough idea of the total value of your estate. B -eneficiaries: Who do you want to receive your assets? First, consider family needs and obligations. Then review your charitable involvements and how a bequest could benefit them, as well as create a lasting legacy for you and your family. For example, you may designate Le Bonheur as a beneficiary of your estate. By sharing your plans with us, you automatically become a member of our DreamBuilders Society, a special organization created to honor those who have included Le Bonheur in their estate plans. C -onfidants: Choose trustworthy people to provide legal and other professional assistance, as well as a personal representative to help settle your estate. You may also need to select one or more trustees and guardians for any minor children. Once you have listed and valued your assets, selected the beneficiaries for your estate, and chosen the key people to assist you now and after your death, it is time to act. Don’t delay. Contact an estate planning attorney right away and move forward. If you need help contacting a good attorney, ask your friends for suggestions or contact the trust department of a local bank for a referral. Ask around until you find someone you feel comfortable with. If you wish, we can assist you in this process as well. While creating a will is easier than you might have thought, it will take some time. But the end result is worth it. You will be well rewarded with a deep sense of satisfaction and peace of mind. For information about including Le Bonheur in your estate plans, please contact Bethany Goolsby, J.D., Director of Planned Giving, at (901) 287-5575, or at [email protected]. 25 w w w . l e b o n h e u r . o r g f it weren’t for Clint, the unit would fall apart!” jokes Shirley Greer of Le Bonheur’s Special Care Unit (SCU) about the department’s Number One Volunteer, Clint Trusty. “He’s the backbone of the SCU.” Clint teases Shirley back, and shares his reason for naming Le Bonheur as the sole beneficiary of his estate. “Le Bonheur Children’s Medical Center is one of the greatest assets Memphis has,” Clint says emphatically. “The hospital not only serves Memphis, it serves the surrounding territory for miles. To see the children come in fighting for life, and to see them go home healthy is very satisfying. To think you had a little something to do with it, that’s extreme satisfaction.” Born and raised in the small farming community of Wallace, Neb., (pop. 400), Clint moved to California with his family at age 14 where he lived the next 40 years. His first career was in the U.S. Navy, which lasted for 20 years. Continental Airlines followed, where he was a senior materials analyst for 16-plus years. When FedEx called in 1983, he moved to Memphis. A confirmed bachelor, the 77-year-old former FedEx Materials Analyst retired in 1993, yet he knew long before he stopped working that he wasn’t the type that could just “go home and sit.” Although he never had his own family, Clint had a lifelong passion to work with and on behalf of children. When the time came to begin the next phase of his life, Clint picked up the phone and called the Le Bonheur Foundation. “Technically, I didn’t know a thing about Le Bonheur except that it existed to help children, but I had already decided that Le Bonheur would be the recipient of my estate,” he shared, noting that Le Bonheur is the first and only children’s hospital he’s ever been inside. When the Director of Volunteer Services dropped him off at the Special Care Unit on his first day as a volunteer, that was it. He’s been there ever since, and now works four-hour shifts four days a week, 52 weeks a year. “Le Bonheur has the greatest staff in the world,” says Clint. “I believe in Le Bonheur, and if you don’t believe in Le Bonheur you can’t work here. Planning Your Will >«Ã vÀ I `Ài • Sp ring 2007 n 1923, a small group of women formed an organization to make clothes for underprivileged children living at Leath Orphanage. Club members selected the name Le Bonheur, meaning “Hour of Happiness,” and began sewing for the children. As the Club grew, so did its commitment to all children in the community, moving beyond clothing orphans to attending to their health care needs by providing transportation to doctors’ appointments. In 1944, when the Pediatric Society had an idea for a hospital dedicated solely to children, Le Bonheur Club was contacted, and members helped raise the funds to build the facility. On June 15, 1952, Le Bonheur Club president Elise Porter Pritchard tied the hospital’s keys to 12 gaily colored balloons and released them into the sky, symbolizing the Club’s promise that the hospital’s doors would never be closed to any ill or injured child. Fast forward to 2007. Now in its 84th year, President Debbie Jones says her emphasis is on increasing Club presence in the hospital. “Our theme for this year is ‘Feel Our Mission,’ and it’s important and very rewarding for our members to be seen volunteering at the hospital by people who appreciate our service and who know we are there,” she explained. “There is so much satisfaction from seeing the faces of a child light up at the sight of a toy or the thankful expression on parents’ faces who have been up all night with a sick child when we serve them a cup of coffee and a muffin from the snack cart. We can and do make a difference in the lives of Le Bonheur’s patients and their families.” Jones says leading the organization is not a job she takes lightly. “This Club has been led by incredible women over the course of its history. They have done a remarkable job of growing us into the legacy-enriched group we are today. Our job is to ‘help Le Bonheur help kids,’ and as president, it’s my job to lead the Club in this effort by listening, advising and caring.” Ongoing projects supported by Club members include serving patient families coffee and muffins, supplying magazines, books and goodies during their child’s hospital stay, and helping stock the Bunny Room. During the holidays, Club members donated more than 200 Barbie dolls toward this project. Le Bonheur Gift Shop specialty sales of linens, jewelry, outerwear and scrubs are manned by Club volunteers. Members are also called upon to plan, prepare, decorate and serve at patient and Associate Christmas parties, the hospital’s birthday on June 15, and other special occasion events such as Doctors’ Day and Nurses’ Day. Additionally, they decorate the lower lobby garden area to coincide with the seasons. In 2004, the Club undertook a strategic plan to fund the Le Bonheur ClubHouse, a parent resource center to be housed within the walls of the new hospital. The Club is now more than halfway through its fundraising campaign to raise $2 million toward this goal. From Oct. 1, 2005, through Sept. 30, 2006, $534,322 was raised for the ClubHouse through such projects as the annual Christmas Cottage, Tasting Tour, gift shop sales and sales of cookbooks and Gail Pittman original ceramic pieces designed exclusively for the Club. The ClubHouse will include a living area, kitchen, children’s library and computer room with internet access to stay in touch with family and friends. A resource center will also provide educational information so families can research their child’s illness and treatment, and learn how to perform certain procedures when their child goes home. “It will be a place where the families can go to take a break and recoup,” described Jones. “The ClubHouse will be located within the hospital so families won’t have to leave the building and can remain close to their children.” Once the ClubHouse is complete, members will carry on their volunteer activities at the hospital, and continue to raise funds for ongoing support of the ClubHouse. “We’re just getting started,” says Jones. “We feel like the original members must have felt in the late 1940’s, when they began their building campaign. To be part of the modern Le Bonheur gives us great pride for what that group of 13 women began in 1923. We believe in what we do, and that is why we are honored to continue their legacy.” Y — By Kini Kedigh Plumlee Jill Crocker and Debbie Jones push the snack cart as a service to Le Bonheur’s patients and parents. Both agree membership requires a major commitment. “The chapters commit to hard work, with every member sharing in the common goal to continue Le Bonheur’s mission to provide a place of care, along with large doses of love to every child who enters our doors,” said Hunt. Through the years, the various TWIGS chapters have staged a variety of fundraising activities that spotlight each group’s distinct talents. Chapter events have included everything from mother and daughter teas, Bunko parties and progressive dinners to the sale of cookbooks, pottery, pizzas and plants. Each Christmas, all TWIGS chapters join together to present the annual Enchanted Forest Festival of Trees, a magical event that has become a Mid-South tradition. The Enchanted Forest features a walk through a winter wonderland of animated characters, gingerbread houses and dozens of creatively decorated Christmas trees sponsored by area businesses and organizations. Last year’s event at the Memphis Pink Palace Museum raised $160,000 for Le Bonheur. As Le Bonheur moves into the future with the building of a new hospital, TWIGS joins this new direction. “We are beginning to combine the efforts of all our chapters with greater emphasis on coordinating larger fundraising events that will raise even more dollars for the new Le Bonheur,” said Lemmon. “This focus will also build camaraderie among all TWIGS members. We welcome and encourage anyone interested to become a member and join us in this endeavor.” For information on joining TWIGS, call Heather Hunt at (901) 287-6101. Founded in 1978, TWIGS of Le Bonheur members serve as ambassadors of the hospital in their own neighborhoods and communities each with the goal of raising funds for the hospital. “TWIGS are chapters related as TWIGS are on a tree,” explains President Monica Lemmon. “The essence of what we do is to raise funds to support the excellent pediatric health care offered at Le Bonheur.” TWIGS chapters are located throughout the area and are comprised of members from diverse communities throughout the region. Currently there are six TWIGS chapters (each named for a tree), located in area communities: East Memphis (Cedar), Cordova/Lakeland/Arlington (Hickory), Germantown (Magnolia), Bartlett/Cordova (SassyFras), University of Memphis Students (Mimosa) and Tupelo (Gumtree) in Mississippi. Many TWIGS members have been active for 10 or more years, according to Lemmon. “The type of volunteer opportunity TWIGS provides is one that gives back not only to Le Bonheur but to each member as well,” Lemmon explains. The separate chapters all gather with the common purpose of helping the children at Le Bonheur. Together, they have raised more than $3.6 million. In 2005, TWIGS chapters helped purchase a state-of-the-art ambulance for the hospital’s ground transportation unit with a donation of $220,000. They also pledged $500,000 toward the construction of the new Le Bonheur hospital. Their contribution will help fund the Rehabilitation Services Department and Emergency Department areas, including two orthopedic rooms, two triage rooms and a trauma room. Additional funds will be allocated toward the purchase of a second ambulance. These special companions give their unconditional love and loyalty, and in return receive a smile and a loving touch from the little ones who are unabashedly drawn to them. Established in 2001, Mid-South Therapy Dogs (MSTD) has visited Le Bonheur kids since 2002. This organization of more than two dozen volunteers and their pets provide animal-assisted activities and animal-assisted therapy at hospitals, hospices and health care centers, schools, libraries and youth facilities throughout the Mid-South. “There are no words to describe the rewarding feeling you get when you see the kids petting the dogs,” says Debb Taylor, founder of Mid-South Pet Partners and a coordinator for MSTD. Debb owns five golden retrievers, four that are therapy dogs. Her friend, Mary Ehrhart, owns three therapy dogs. Together, the women and their canine companions spend at least three days each week easing fears and offering nurturing and acceptance. “Therapy dogs offer a break from the trauma of being in a hospital or health care environment,” explained Mary. “Dogs don’t judge or criticize. They accept you the way you are and don’t care what you look like or whether you have a broken leg or an IV.” Pet therapy does wonders for a patient’s physical and mental well-being. Physiological tests have shown that stroking and petting animals lowers blood pressure, reduces anxiety and stress, promotes healing and lifts spirits. Relationships with animals are free of the threats and responsibilities inherent in human relationships. Pets visiting with patients enhance mood and social interaction. “In a hospital setting, where most touch is painful or invasive, the touch of an animal is safe and non-threatening,” explained Thomas Hobson, Le Bonheur’s Manager of Child Life Services. “Animals can open a channel of emotionally safe communication with patients. Children, especially, are likely to project their feelings and experiences onto an animal. When the therapy dogs come to visit Le Bonheur, there is more laughter and interaction among our kids.” “They do all the work,” adds Mary. “All we do is hold the leash. People ask, ‘What do these dogs do?’ It’s a simple answer. If they make you smile, they’ve done their job.” And what do the dogs get out of it? “Where else can they go and lay on a cool floor and be petted and loved on and have cookies?” says Debb with a laugh. — Kini Kedigh Plumlee Sisters Lydia and Addie Tollison love cuddling Cooper and Tank.
