Annual Repor
2014 Annual Report from the director W e’re on a mission to end homelessness. In 2014, we built connections to meet this challenge. We strengthened our partnerships with volunteers and community members working to address the lack of affordable housing in the region. We thought strategically about how to help more people in years to come. We also kept right on housing the homeless. We worked to keep 21 families housed and safe. This was a good year. Kittery Block Party funding, “in lieu of tips” donations from Lil’s employees, and a CSA food share for our residents from Orange Circle Farm are just three examples of the generous and diverse support Fair Tide received this year. We also received donations from area realtors who sponsored 147 One Warm Nights for our residents, including 112 nights sponsored by Gosselin Realty Group. And with the help of volunteers who donated more than 1,100 hours of their time in 2014, the Fair Tide thrift store realized the highest sales in its history. Everything we do is made possible by our community coming together. The Fair Tide board of directors and staff have worked hard to meet our annual goals including ensuring that Fair Tide is adequately funded as we expand services. Thanks to a grant from United Way of the Greater Seacoast, we are able to offer homeless prevention services to keep people at risk of losing their housing housed. We continued to collaborate with all area shelters to house the homeless and continued to serve on the steering committee of the Greater Seacoast Coalition to End Homelessness. This coalition’s first project, Coordinated Access, has increased access to housing, resulting in shorter emergency shelter stays for households. Fair Tide, in collaboration with the wider community, continued to prioritize housing availability for every person. Our community is stronger for it. Finally, you might have noticed Fair Tide’s new look. Thanks goes out to Shoofly Creative for donating Fair Tide’s new logo design and website. We’re happy with the fresh, new look and the marketing value it will provide. Thank you to all who support our mission. —Mary Oplinger, Fair Tide Executive Director FROM THE PROGRAM 2014 was a very good year for Fair Tide housing program participants. This report is comprised of successes stories for households who have moved on from the Fair Tide program into permanent housing. Read on to see evidence of your donations at work! A T his 20-year-old female addict found herself pregnant and on her own. She entered a shelter for mothers-to-be where she began her sobriety, and began learning self-care and parenting skills. Within a week of giving birth she entered Fair Tide’s transitional housing program with her newborn, afraid and uncertain of what their future held. t 43, this mother found herself alone and homeless after the father of the child fled the relationship. This mother was making barely $200 a week at her part-time job. She and her son moved into the only space she could afford, a one-room garage with a garden hose shower in the corner, cold running water, and an old kerosene heater for warmth. Over time the relationships between this young mother, program staff, and other residents engendered trust. Her self-esteem improved as she developed a sense of her own autonomy and independence. She followed through with additional social service relationships beyond Fair Tide support and found her community links strengthening. This family found peace and comfort in the supportive, transitional housing program at Fair Tide, moving from the garage to a lovely, two-bedroom apartment and finally to permanent housing. While at Fair Tide she paid an affordable rent and was provided with the support needed to identify and work toward financial and health goals. This family developed strong connections to community services and accessed links for state assistance. During her two years in the Fair Tide program, this mother received her AS degree in business, graduating with honors, maintained her housing and her job, and stayed clean and sober. Just prior to moving from Fair Tide she enrolled in a BS degree program to continue her education. Once she began receiving assistance for day care, this mother was able to return to work full time and improve her economic status by saving money and paying off old debts. Her employer upgraded her full-time position to assistant manager. Her credit score slowly increased. She purchased a new vehicle and had it fully insured. When this mother first moved to Fair Tide, her eyes were down cast, she rarely smiled, looked frail and exhausted, and smelled of kerosene. At our last community cookout, she was full of laughter and appreciation for “the blessings” she says she and her son have received by being program participants and tenants at Fair Tide. No longer homeless, this family is confident, healthy, and financially stable. 2014 | Fair Tide Annual report This family transitioned out of Fair Tide this year moving into permanent housing made affordable through the use of a Section 8 voucher obtained during their stay at Fair Tide. She purchased a new vehicle on a payment plan and paid back monies due on old debts. She realized that her anxiety was lowered by practicing new, healthy behaviors that were once expressed by avoiding the reality of her finances. She deals confidently with her expenses, paying bills on time. Above it all, this mother has regained the trust of her parents, who, a year ago, during a case management intervention, sat with tears in their eyes shaking their heads in disbelief at their daughter’s addictions and her choices. She has a church family where she and her daughter have friends. With a grateful heart, this mother walks with her head held high, her mind clean and free, her spirit eager to live the life she now knows she can make for herself and her daughter. 3 STATEMENTS OF activities FOR THE YEARS ENDED JUNE 30, 2014 AND 2013 CHANGES IN UNRESTRICTED NET ASSETS: 2014 2013 Revenue and support: Grants and contributions $ 138,044 $ 122,517 Rental income 27,059 39,095 Thrift store sales 143,750 128,748 Interest income 32 31 Other income - Net assets released from restrictions 8,408 5,001 Total revenue and support 317,293 295,392 Functional expenses: Programs: Transitional Housing 87,441 102,251 Permanent Housing 40,155 41,259 Thrift Store 106,218 98,698 Fundraising 44,514 29,219 Management and General 24,343 25,543 Total functional expenses 302,671 296,970 Increase (decrease) in unrestricted net assets 14,622 (1,578) CHANGE IN RESTRICTED NET ASSETS: Restricted contributions - 10,000 Interest income - 1 Refund of restricted contributions - Net assets released from restrictions (8,408) (5,001) Increase (decrease) in restricted net assets (8,408) 5,000 INCREASE (DECREASE) IN NET ASSETS 6,214 3,422 NET ASSETS, beginning of year 254,100 250,678 NET ASSETS, end of year $260,314 $254,100 4 Fair Tide annual report | 2014 STATEMENTS OF FINANCIAL POSITION ASSETS JUNE 30, 2014 AND 2013 2014 CURRENT ASSETS: Cash $77,588 Cash restricted 1,464 Accounts receivable 5,208 Prepaid expenses 3,917 Total current assets $52,946 9,872 5,240 6,393 88,177 74,451 PROPERTY AND EQUIPMENT: Land 46,000 Building and improvements 578,984 Equipment 11,070 Furniture and fixtures 18,303 46,000 578,984 11,070 18,303 2013 654,357 654,357 Less - accumulated depreciation 206,135 189,874 448,222 464,483 OTHER ASSETS: Deposits 1,802 1,802 15,567 Reserves and escrows 15,978 17,780 17,369 $554,179 $556,303 LIABILITIES AND NET ASSETS CURRENT LIABILITIES: Notes payable - current maturities Accounts payable and accrued expenses $9,986 14,017 $9,639 12,163 24,003 21,802 LONG-TERM LIABILITIES: Notes payable, net of current portion shown above 268,134 1,728 Tenant security deposit 279,037 1,364 Total current liabilities 269,862 280,401 NET ASSETS: Restricted 1,464 Unrestricted 258,850 9,872 244,228 260,314 254,100 $554,179 $556,303 2014 | Fair Tide Annual report 5 Fair Tide, Inc. 15 State Road Kittery, Maine 03904 (207) 439-6376 www.fairtide.org Thrift Store Hours Monday-Saturday, 10 AM - 5 PM Sunday, 12 - 5 PM FROM THE Thrift storE Board of Directors 2014-2015 Doug Roberts, Chair portsmouthnh.com Sharon McLaughlin, RN ANP, Vice Chair /Secretary MGH Charlestown Health Center Jesse Dumais, Treasurer Kennebunk Savings Bank Kevin Gage Fair Tide Program Graduate Mitch Kostoulakos Ad Hoc Logistics, LLC Jean Kerr Editor, Northeast Flavor Magazine 2013-14 Wanda McDonough, Chair Doug Roberts, Vice Chair/Secretary Jesse Dumais, Treasurer Sharon McLaughlin, RN ANP Kevin Gage Cassandra Mosher Janet Stitt, LCSW Staff Mary Oplinger Executive Director Jan Walsh Program Director/Case Manager Nancy McGinnis Case Manager Ann-Marie Waterhouse Bookkeeper/Development Coordinator Barbara McGaughey Director of Social Entrepreneurship Sharon Morrill Senior Sales Associate Eleanor Doole Sales Associate Edith Lander Sales Associate 2014 was a very busy year for the Fair Tide thrift store.
