Volume 88, Issue 5 Camp Waldemar, Hunt, Texas 78024 Saturday, July 6, 2013 We’re only here for one last mes. We’re the Hilltoppers of ONE TRES! By Hilltopper, Anne-Wayland P During our last month as campers, the hilltoppers have been kept busy with many fun activities starting with the Tribute and Traditions Vesper, then tribal elections and an exciting camp out at Marsha’s house. Comanche Ragan R said, “This has been the best term yet!” Later we all went on the hilltopper trip to Stablewood Springs Resort. Everyone enjoyed a relaxing day drinking ice tea and lounging by the pool. Even with our busy schedules, Aztec Brittany B reflects, “It doesn’t feel like camp is ending. I’m not ready to leave!” We’re all going to miss this magical camp full of fond memories and close friends! Tejas Audrey A said, “Camp has helped me grow into a kinder, Hilltoppers 2013 nicer and happier person. I’m going to miss camp more than words can describe.” It’s easy to tell all of us love camp and aren’t ready to say goodbye. So, this is just “see you later,” because all 34 hilltoppers are counting down the days to 1st Field Day next year! Thank you for a fantastic summer! 2 Saturday, July 6, 2013 The Waldemar War Whoop A Giant Performance - Aztec Vesper By Evelyn B The Aztec tribe put on a she “enjoyed the performance!” She spectacular performance last Sunday. added that her favorite part was the The moral, which was about focusing face off between David and Goliath. The church service opened with a greeting by George Anne, who commented that the weather had dropped twenty degrees from last week’s sweltering heat - a perfect example of God’s work everywhere we look! After the introduction, the service went as usual. The scripture was read and an all-camp hymn sung. However, since this was the very last church service of the term, several Hilltoppers, Aztecs Brittany B and Lily A, Comanches Ragan R and Ally S and Tejas Audrey A and Caroline T, presented the group with their personal Waldemar stories. Campers talked about God’s presence in their lives, and how they were able to grow spiritually, emotionally, and physically through their many priceless summers here at camp. Some Hilltoppers even implored younger girls not to take for granted their years at camp in their speeches. Their presentations were highly touching, and the girls managed to hold back their tears while presenting. Thankfulness, and realization of how precious our short time here at camp is, was almost tangible in the air. The touching church ceremony was the perfect kick start to our last week of first term. Every camper finished out their term with 100 percent effort. Hilltoppers Present Final Program First Term 2013 “The Wizard of Waldemar” Cast: Dorothy........................................ Leader Barbara L welcomed all family, friends, and Aztecs onto upper hill, which marked some girls’ last climb onto their hill as campers. Speakers Molly Z, Ariana N, Ella C, and Lauren N spoke of the memories and friendships created at Waldemar. Audrey H then lit a fire in honor of the friends and family of the Aztecs. Katharine L-T lit her torch in honor of an everlasting Aztec spirit, while Morgan Taylor T honored the hilltoppers’ final climb up tribal hill. Ian B then lit a fire in honor of the Aztec sponsors. Finally, Gigi L lit her torch in honor of the Ideal Waldemar Girl. Next, Claire B, Kate H, and Ivy B each spoke about Second Field Day as they encouraged the Aztecs to try their hardest in their events the following day. The sponsors then announced all the Aztecs who had perfect record cards, as well as the volleyball, soccer, softball, and war canoe teams. Lastly, the officers turned in their bracelets and bibs as it marked their final night as leaders in the Aztec tribe. Tucker G read the closing prayer as the Aztecs gathered in a friendship circle. The Aztecs then sang the toasts to the Comanches and Tejas, as well as the Aztec tribal song, and finally closed the evening with Taps. Aztec Scribe Charlotte N Comanche Tribal Hill For the fourth and final time this term, the Comanche tribe gathered together at their sacred tribal hill. For some of the girls, this would be their last tribal hill. When the bugle rang, the girls, along with some of their parents, were greeted by Head Cheerleader, Sydney T. Sydney then passed out Sunshine Girl Awards and Friendship Awards. In closing, toasts in honor of the Aztec and Tejas tribes were said. While climbing to upper hill, the Comanche sisters softly sang their sacred song. Everyone was greeted by Leader Carling C. Four torches were lit by Laura A, Ally S, Bailey S, and Sydney T in honor of the First Term Comanches of 2013, memories, the Ideal Waldemar Girl, and the Comanche Sponsors. Next, a poem was read by Grace B, Mary Crow M, Carly F, Annabel D, Joy A, and Claire B. The three Comanche Sponsors, Catherine D, Jane Anne B, and Drew L, then called the officers up one by one. The Comanche officers thanked the tribe and turned in their bibs and bracelets. Hill Awards were then presented to Comanches who exemplified the high ideals set by the tribe. As the final tribal hill came to a close, the Hilltoppers recited a poem. After the Rock pile Ceremony, the Comanche Tribe and parents recited Squish’s Prayer and sang the Comanche Tribal song as well as both verses of Taps. Comanche Scribe Morgan N Tejas Tribal Hill For the final time this term, the Tejas tribe joined together and climbed our sacred tribal hill. This climb marked the last visit to Tejas tribal hill for the Hilltoppers of 2013. Drew C opened lower hill with a prayer followed by Activities Chair Hailey B reading the activities for Saturday. Friendship awards were handed out and Maggie T closed lower hill. With candle light girls lighting the way, the Tejas tribe climbed to upper hill. The opening prayer was read by Ashley M, followed by a welcome from the Tejas leader Emma E. Next, Elizabeth S, Scarlett S, and Sarah B read a poem about giving and receiving. Sabrae P was the speaker on Tejas hill, followed by the lighting of the fires. The fire of sportsmanship was lit by True K, the fire of loyalty was lit by Kate M, and the fire of friendship was lit by Hailey B. After awards were given, Molly B closed upper hill with a prayer followed by the traditional friendship circle and the singing of Tejas Forever and Taps. Tejas Scribe Caroline T The Waldemar War Whoop Saturday, July 6, 2013 Barbara L is selected 2013 First Term Ideal Waldemar Girl 7 Every term, Waldemar presents a graduating camper with the highest award in camp, the Ideal Waldemar Girl. This ideal girl is chosen by her outstanding leadership qualities, positive attitude and great personality. She always promotes the Waldemar ideals: thoughtfulness, health, friendship, service, loyalty, sportsmanship, courage, leadership, beauty, and reverence. Waldemar has been honoring girls with this award since 1933. This is one of the many traditions here at Waldemar that has been carried out for over 78 years. It was first started when the Comanche tribe proposed to honor a girl who is highly admired and appreciated. She is voted on by the counselor staff. It has now become traditional to announce this young lady at the end of a ceremony given by the hilltoppers. The drill began with the presentation of flags, followed by the canoe drill itself and ended with gunwhalers crossing the pier. Waldemar’s Canoe Drill is dedicated to Dolly Downs Kelton (1906–2010), who created the first Canoe Drill in 1931. Dolly, hired by Aunt Ora, was a Waldemar counselor for 11 years. Their acting, their simple costumes, their memorization and movement, their timing, and their set changes were perfection! Cruella, especially, took the show to another level! Played by Ivy B, Cruella was mean and wicked and devilish which is totally opposite of her kind and respectful nature. One of the campers said, “she doesn’t have a mean bone in her body.” Roger and Anita, Horace and Jasper, Meathead, Pongo, Lucky, Roly, the Inspector, and all the 15 puppies were SPOT ON, never veering from their character! We actually felt like there were over 100 pups after they started howling in the show. We wish them well on their Dalmatian Plantation! A big thanks goes out to counselors who assisted Adrienne with this project, especially Andie and Maddie and all the Junior counselors who helped with Dress rehearsal – you saved the day! 9 10 Saturday, July 6, 2013 The Waldemar War Whoop Campers Have a Ball at Carnival Several game stations, from the baseball throw to the mysterious side show, lined the basketball court last Friday. Brightly colored, festive streamers lined the wire fences, and the delicious smell of burgers and curly fries was thick in the air. Campers rushed to Carnival the second the bugle rang to show off the costumes they’d been working on all term with their kampong. Everyone was tense with excitement for the dancing, games, and soda and candy, of course! Once the Queenie Fourteenie, Claire B, was announced and the carnival began, girls explored the carnival, going from station to station, some returning to their favorites for a second try at a tricky game. Many campers danced energetically, cotton candy in hand, in the center of the courts to songs like Macarena and the Mambo No. 5. Others stood in small groups, chatting and giggling with their closest friends. There was a long line to enter the mysterious side show tent at the back of the court. Toward the end of Carnival, raffle and costume winners were announced. After, Hilltoppers (16 year old girls in their last year of camp) danced and sang to their edited rendition of Miley Cyrus’s “Best of Both Worlds”, changing “Best of Both Worlds” to “Best Hilltoppers”. It was a successful, fun-filled carnival for all! Jr./Int. Raffle: Costume Winners: Juniors RH2 “Ranch House Raqueteers” Intermediates (a tie!)
