Aztec Present a “Happy, Happy, Happy” Vesper
Volume 89, Issue 3 Camp Waldemar, Hunt, Texas 78024 Sunday, June 22, 2014 Aztec Present a “Happy, Happy, Happy” Vesper By Ella M The Aztec Vesper of 2014, “Happy, Happy, Happy” was a happy event! Down at the pier, these very green-spirited girls sang and cheered their songs. Kate H, a 3 year Aztec, said she loved the song selections and had “tons of fun!” She said she was very HAPPY! This event took lots of practice; these Aztec girls went from memorizing songs to memorizing acting parts. The Aztec sponsors worked hard making the scripts, selecting the songs, picking the dances, and choosing the soloists. The girls who volunteered stayed a few minutes longer than others and practiced more. The soloist has many extra lines to learn! At the end of the vesper, everyone went to bed glad and satisfied. Everyone who was a part of the service did a wonderful job. The Junior Chorus made an exciting appearance, singing a very sweet song, called “Surely the Presence of the Lord.” The scriptures were read with great pride and the songs were full of joy. From the opening to the closing, every second was beautiful. “Make a joyful noise to the Lord, Worship the Lord with gladness; Come into His presence with singing.” Speaker Ari R AM I S T CE OF TH E W EE K Kat D For her great attitude, talent, and helping others in class! The Waldemar War Whoop Sunday, June 22, 2014 3 Summer Singers Rock! By Emma C Saturday night opened with the usual picnic and plenty of time to talk with friends. Most kept themselves occupied while the anticipation for the concert began to build. The fun was introduced as soon as the Summer Singers opened with a cover of the uplifting song “Happy” by Pharell Williams. The opening piece allowed campers and counselors the opportunity to let loose as it also set the mood for the rest of the performance. The group kept everyone on their feet (and even some in the air) by playing some of the camp’s favorite songs. Their variety ranged from old school hits to modern pop music. Summer Singers are in town! “My favorite part of the night was when they [the Summer Singers] played ‘Story of my Life’ by One Direction because I’m a Directioner,” says Summer H. While appealing to almost everyone, this group has never let us down with their performances. Over all, this night was a complete success. Grace and Olivia enjoying the night Jenna Belle F rocks out The Waldemar War Whoop Carnival Sunday, June 22, 2014 4 By Emma S The sounds of happy voices filled the clear air. The girls made their way up to all the games and stuffed themselves with satisfying, delicious food. Carnival has always been one of the many exciting highlights of Camp Waldemar! The waiting was no more… Carnival had arrived! This event would not have been able to happen without the wonderful cooking staff and everybody that helped set up the carnival, including a special guest: June R, who comes every year all the way from Beaumont, Texas to assist. Mary Margaret J said “The food was amazing!” and it most certainly was. There were burgers, curly fries, hot dogs, cotton candy, snow cones, and so much more! My personal favorite was the cotton candy, it was delicious. No matter what you ate, you were sure to leave full and happy. As music blared from the speakers, the girls danced the night away. In a small area of the basketball court, there was a sideshow featuring counselors dancing along to the music with masks of Joyce, Marsha, Susan, Linda, and Barb on! Everyone loved it! At the end of all the fun, the Hilltoppers sang their Hilltopper song! It brought a wonderful gleaming smile to all of the campers’ faces. On behalf of all of the Waldy girls, I thank everyone who made Carnival possible! There, the tribe found inspiration to do the best they could on First Field Day. The evening began with the Aztecs arriving at our Lower Hill. Once everyone was sitting on rocks, Activities Chair Elaine M read the upcoming events of the week. Head Cheerleader, Electra T then announced that junior Ellie P would be taking care of Princess WinEm-All for the week. The high point intermediate award was given to Annie W. The Aztecs then proceeded to their upper hill to listen to motivational words that would fully prepare them for the excitement of First Field Day. The Aztecs’ second upper hill of the term began with a greeting from our Leader, Ian B. She explained that our hill was dedicated to sportsmanship, teamwork and the friendly competitive spirit between our friends the Comanche and Tejas tribes. In honor of the Aztec tribe, determination, success, the Comanches and Tejas, and our sponsors, five fires were lit and speeches recited by Caroline M, Sydney A, Katelynn C, Ella C, and Hannah J. Due to their major participation in Field Day the Aztec softball team and war canoe were announced. Speakers Raine O, Caroline M, Evie S, Mary Helen B, and Morgan-Taylor T remind the Aztec tribe of the importance of teamwork, determination, and sportsmanship. Ian B also addressed these qualities in her empowering speech to the Aztecs. High Senior Leader Gigi L introduced our speaker, George Anne Elmore. She gave a very inspiring speech that will surely motivate the Aztecs on First Field Day. After GA was thanked, the Arrow awards were passed out. Weekly awards were then announced. Cypress Bearers were Eleanor A and Maddie S, the Cypress Girl was Fatima M and the most spirited Aztec, Cleo N, received the Montezuma award. The softball award was given to Olivia Y and the war canoe award to Willow K. As the tribal hill was coming to an end, Eleanor A spoke a beautifully worded prayer while the Aztecs joined in a friendship circle. The night concluded with toasts, the Aztec tribal song and prayer and Taps. Aztec Scribe Molly M Comanche Tribal Hill This Thursday, the Comanches had their second tribal hill. This hill was especially important because it prepared the tribe to do their best on First Field Day. Upon arrival at lower hill, Activities Chair Madeleine L and head cheerleader JennaBelle F greeted the Comanches. Madeleine read the upcoming week’s activities and JennaBelle presented the friendship awards and the sunshine girl awards. Madison C and Abby T then gave toasts to the Aztecs and Tejas and lower hill came to a close. When the tribe had ascended our beautiful tribal hill, Comanche Leader Caroline R welcomed everyone. Nina M, Caroline B, and Holly M then recited the torches, which reminded the Comanches to maintain strength, sportsmanship, and determination on First Field Day. Following the torches, Madi S, Emily D, and Anna M spoke about having Comanche Spirit. The Comanche sponsors Milla B, Marisa P and Margaret A then performed “We Love You This Much” skit, as is tradition on the second tribal hill. After the skit, all 5 of the Comanche hilltoppers spoke to the tribe about the importance of sportsmanship, spirit, teamwork, determination, and fighting our hardest for an orange victory. Caroline R then presented the weekly awards. Rock Pile Leader went to Cate W, High Point Intermediate went to Madeline G, and Sydney S received High Point Junior. The softball award was given to Annabel D, the war canoe paddle went to Doodle S, Spirit stick went to Alexandra S, and megaphone to Madi S. Second Tribal Hill ended with each Comanche placing a candle on our sacred rockpile, then joining hands in a friendship circle for Squish’s prayer, the tribal song, and Taps. Comanche Scribe Raney S Tejas Tribal Hill 6 On Thursday night, the Tejas climbed their sacred hill for the second time of First Term 2014. Once at Lower Hill, Daisy F welcomed all with the opening prayer. Activities Chairman Sophie Aliece H then read the activities for the week and Head Cheerleader Molly M handed out thoughtful friendship awards. Summer H, Elizabeth M, and Grace Y then recited a witty poem about taking responsibility. After S Smith read the closing prayer, the Tejas proceeded to Upper Hill. After Margy S opened upper hill with a prayer, Kathryn D dedicated our tribal hill to the important ideal of sportsmanship. Claire M, Eloise T and Isabel W lit three fires to signify the Tejas Ideals of friendship, loyalty and sportsmanship. Afterwards, Sarah Jane M, Annabelle D, Maggie T, Mimi H, Giulia F and Elizabeth F read an inspirational poem about strength and grit. Our speaker, then gave a motivational talk that got everyone excited for First Field Day. When the speech was over, the Tejas Tribal Awards were given to deserving girls. High Point Junior went to Georgia S. Olivia B received the High Point Intermediate award. The spirit stick was given to Kate F. Isabel W was recognized with the Purple T. This week’s Memory Candlelight Girl was Lizzie F. The Softball award went to Mary Ann G and the War Canoe was awarded to Mary Margaret O. Once Nicole Z read the closing prayer, the Tejas joined hands in a friendship circle to end the night by singing Tejas Forever and Taps. Tejas Scribe Emily F The Waldemar War Whoop Sunday, June 22, 2014 7 Tribute and Traditions Vesper On Friday night, campers and counselors gathered at the Depot for the Tribute Vesper written by Louise B and performed by our Hilltoppers. This vesper was one of the best and most special vespers we’ve ever seen! The hilltoppers began with the history of Waldemar and its founders and continued with the “Stars in the Workshop.” These “Stars” symbolized courage, kindness, loyalty, strength, and wisdom, all which have helped Jill hangs her star of Wisdom Becca and Madeline hang the star of Courage Waldemar become what it has today. This vesper was especially a tribute to five very special ladies who combined have over 250 years of camping experience at Camp Waldemar: Susan G, Barb K, Joyce J, Jan C and Jill J. Waldemar would not be what it is today without the hard work, dedication and love each of these ladies has shared with us throughout the years. Hilltoppers and Honorees Buzzard Softball Game • Rookies vs. Retreads The annual Buzzard softball game took place this past Sunday and the Retreads scratched, squawked, and screeched their way to a victory over the Rookies. For the Rookies, Jodi V, from the wrangler staff, won MVB (Most Valuable Buzzard) for having a fantastic attitude throughout the game and pitching for their team. After the game, over 20 counselors ran and jumped into the river, another counselor tradition. Great job out there Buzzards! George Anne is up to bat Teak warms up for the game Retreads cheer on their team The Waldemar War Whoop Sunday, June 22, 2014 8 Senior Skits By Emily B As the bugle blew, the whole camp filed down to the pier to the evening program. A stranger looking upon the scene might find it odd to see many campers carrying everything from benches to toilet plungers. They might also notice the strange attire of some of the girls: curly wigs, bathrobes, face paint, and more were sported by many senior kampongs. Only a camper would understand that tonight could only be one thing: Senior Skits. Senior skits at Waldemar are looked forward to throughout the term by both the campers and the staff, and none were disappointed. Some popular favorites were: “The Guadfather”, “Camp Girls”, “The Other Directions”, and “Mulan”. For an intermission we experienced the hidden talents of many people. From pig noises to horse noises, all were delighted at these animal interactions. At the end of everything the Hilltoppers sang a parody of “Break Even” by The Script. On behalf of Camp Waldemar, I’d like to thank everyone who made this hilarious night possible. Senior Skit Results Senior Skits is one of the most entertaining evening programs held during the month, and this years event did not disappoint! For the eighth grade division, the overall winner was E2 with their performance of “The Guadfather”, a parody of the classic movie “The Godfather”. Other honorable mentions were “Marsha’s Secret Angels” which was a play on Victoria’s Secret Angels, with GA, Jan, Gay and others featured as the angels, performed by E3. Some of the Hams in this division were awarded to Claire M, Virginia F, and Kate S. The ninth grade division also featured some exciting shows! FC2 placed first on the first night with their One Direction skit, using the songs “Best Song Ever” and “The Story of my Life”. Winner K10 Winner A2 Winner K11 Winner E2 Second place of the first night went to A3 with #WaldyProbs, featuring armpit stains, forgetting to bring boots for picture day, and many more problems faced every day by Waldy girls. The overall winner for this division was A2 with “I-Marsha”, based on the hit TV show “I-Carly”. Some of the Hams in this division went to Scarlett S, Daisy F, and Emily B. In the 10th grade division we saw the casts of Mulan, How I Met Your Mother, and the Incredibles. There was a tie between two Kampongs for overall winner: K11 and K10. K10 performed “Hello My Name Is…” featuring the importance of name tags, meanwhile K11 formed their skit around the Amanda Bynes movie, “She’s the Man.” Some of the Hams in this division went to Anne Kathryn T, Autumn L, and Morgan T Thomas. It was a great night! Thank you to all the ladies who performed! The Waldemar War Whoop Sunday, June 22, 2014 Buzzard Of The Week: Jacy H 9 'Round Camp This week’s B uzzard of the Week is second year counselor Jacy H from Austin, TX! Jacy was an 8 year Comanche and we are so excited to have her back as a counselor this summer! Some “squawking” comments made about Jacy are that “she does a great job as a division director,” “she’s always on top of things, has so much positivity and grace in a timely and organized manner,” “always helpful,” and “she’s never in a bad mood and always wants to help!” Thank you Jacy for all of your hard work! Gabby Ti The Waldemar War Whoop Sunday, June 22, 2014 10 Tribe for Life By Emily B 'Round Camp Dear Ora Dear Ora, A girl in my cabin likes to cheat at card games, what should I do? Sincerely, Fair Player Fair Player, Try confronting her calmly and telling her the correct way to play, but only accuse her of cheating if you’re alone or you might embarrass her. Try this instead, “I’m not sure that’s the right way to play the game. Do you want some help?” If she continues to cheat, just play with someone else, maybe watching you guys have fun-the fair way--will encourage her to change her ways! Good luck! Sincerely, Ora Dear Ora, There is a girl in my cabin who is constantly getting homesick. What can I do to help? Sincerely, Kind Camper Dear Kind Camper, I understand what you’re talking about because I too have been homesick. Everyone gets homesick every now and then! The best thing to do is to comfort her by letting her know how much fun she’s going to have at camp and how glad you are to have her in your kampong. Remind her that her family loves her as well and that they want her to have fun, not to spend her time worrying about them. If that doesn’t work, just tell her everything is going to be okay and top it off with a hug! Sincerely, Ora It was the time of day when it’s not quite day and not quite night. Where the sun makes its last effort to claim the sky, just before it reluctantly sets, giving way to the moon and stars. There I sat. I wasn’t quite sure what emotion I should be feeling; nervous, probably. Excited? The next moment would change my life forever. I was only ten years old. We sat on the pier, the whole camp attired in an innocent white. We sat here for what felt like years, and finally they called my name. Unsure if I was completely ready, I approached. The box was shaken to shuffle it’s contents. I put my hand in and perused the sheets, choosing what seemed like the largest one and unfolded… “Comanche!” I said into the microphone. I was quickly pulled to the side of the pier and warmly embraced into my new orange family. I have never felt anything but happiness with my new sisterhood since that evening.
