Hooray for a Fantastic First Term!
The first day of camp is filled
with anticipation for both new and
returning campers alike. The campers
look forward to long rest hours full of
fun kampong bonding, exciting and
diverse class schedules, and touching
evening programs. As the buses pull
up, everyone sees GA give her classic
leap and the summer begins!
Madi S, of FC1, claimed that
Fort Worth had been the first bus to
arrive for the last few years, however

not this year! A quick arrival usually
means a better bunk, so the girls like
to get there fast! Finding out who is
in each kampong is one of the best
parts of the day. So many friends
are finally reunited after a long year
apart.
After visiting with friends and
organizing their bunks, the girls headed
down to the dining hall for a delicious
dinner of burgers followed by Tribal
Drawings for new campers.

Tribal Drawing Ceremony Welcomes New Campers
After an enthusiastic
beginning of camp, 39 first-year
campers walked in procession to
the Pier Friday night, welcomed
by all returning campers singing
“Waldemar, Sea of Woods.” With
everyone dressed in white,
the traditional tribal drawing

tribe, the Aztecs, Comanches,
and Tejas all looked upon the
new campers, excited to initiate
their new members.
As the ceremony began,
Aztec Callie R welcomed the
wide-eyed newcomers to
Waldemar. Comanche Margaret
M then spoke about the
founding of the tribes, the Tejas
and Comanches in 1928 and
the Aztec tribe in 1943. Tejas

By Emma S
Waldemar Idol of first
term 2015 was a show of
various superb talents. It
included dancing, whistling,
and even golf tricks!
Emily G said, “It was a
very touching ceremony”.
There was an array of of
memorable performances,
each with their own unique
qualities.
Christina W said,”my
two favorite acts were the
girl who sang ‘Waldemar
Sea of Woods’ and Elizabeth
and Caroline who sang
Riptide.”.
A specific memorable
performance was Susannah

“ H a l l e l u j a h ”, w h i c h h a s
become a tradition for them
to sing at this special event.
Overall, Waldy Idol was a
wonderful show that will give
every camper memories that
last a lifetime. It’s a fantastic
break from the busy days at
Camp Waldemar where the
talent of many campers can
be celebrated.

Buzzard Elections

The two white dogs were laying on
the softball field basking in the warm
sun. Their owner, Marsha, was chatting
with GA about something. Louie groaned
and rolled over.
“Gus! Help me! I’m bored!” he
complained.
“Go play with some campers,” Gus
replied without even looking at the other
dog.
“No! They always try to touch me!
Don’t they know I like my personal
space?” Louie said as he got up and
started circling Gus. “I know! Let’s go to
the stables!” Louie exclaimed suddenly.
Gus finally rolled over. “No Louie. It’s
dangerous over there.”
“I’ ll go without you.” Louie
threatened.
Gus rolled his eyes and stood up. “I
can’t let you do that,” he said with a sigh.
“Yay! Come on!” Louie banded
off with Gus close behind. They soon
arrived at the giant gates of the stables
after dodging flying arrows and hostile
tennis balls.
“Woah!” Louie said in awe. “What
are those?”
“I think they’re called horses? Yes!
Horses,” Gus replied.
The two dogs cautiously trotted
through the tall gates.
“Hey look at this!” Louie exclaimed.
Gus turned his head to see Louie running
and jumping around the giant animal’s
legs. Gus couldn’t help but join in.
They didn’t notice the horse’s irritated
whinnying or pawing at the ground.
They soon started moving around and
jerking their heads wildly. The white dogs
frantically dodged stomping hooves and
swishing tails. They had just escaped the
chaos when another bigger, older dog
approached them.
“The name’s Mac,” the other dog
replied. “and you two don’t belong here.”
Louie opened his mouth when Gus
said, “No, we don’t.” Mac then alerted his
owner, Liz, and she took the two dogs
down to the office, where they belonged.

First Tribal Hill - First Term
Aztec Tribal Hill
On Thursday night, the Aztec
tribe climbed their sacred tribal hill
for the first time this term. For the
new campers, the night marked the
beginning of an everlasting sisterhood.
For the hilltoppers, this represented the
beginning of the end.
After arriving at lower hill, the
first year Aztecs were introduced to
their tribal big sisters. Next, Activities
Chairman, Emily T, read the events for
the following week. Head Cheerleader
Emily G then gave Princess Win-Em-All
to C.C. H and High Point Intermediate
to Cammy K. Emily and Emily closed
lower hill and the tribe proceeded to
upper hill.
When the Aztecs reached upper
hill, the 2015 leader Callie R greeted
them. Speakers then explained the
importance of the five Aztec ideals:
aspiration, zeal, teamwork, enthusiasm
and courtesy. The officers of 2015 were
then announced and were given them
bib or bracelet.
Weekly awards were then given
out. Cypress Bearers were given to
Avery B and Ella C. The Cypress girl
award was then awarded to Hunter
H. The most spirited Aztec, Gabby T,
received the Montezuma award. Livia
B received the softball award and the
war canoe paddle went to Willow K.
As the first tribal hill came to a
close, a closing prayer was read while
the Aztecs joined hands in a friendship
circle. The night ended with the singing
of the Aztec tribal song and Taps.

Comanche Tribal Hill
On Thursday night, the Comanches
climbed their sacred tribal hill for the first time
of the term. For some, this would be the first
hill of many; for others, this climb would mark
one of the last.
Comanches were welcomed at lower hill
by Activities Chair Connell M, who announced
the events for the upcoming week. Head
Cheerleader Chloe Y then presented the
Friendship and Sunshine Girl Awards and
taught new tribal sisters the toasts to the
Aztecs and Tejas. Finally, the much anticipated
big and little sister reveal took place, pairing
each anxious new Comanche with their tribal
big sister. Connell and Chloe then closed
lower hill and invited the tribe to proceed to
upper hill.
Under our glowing orange sky, our Leader
Maggie W greeted the Comanches on upper
hill. After each girl found a place to sit around
our coveted rockpile, Elizabeth M, Annabel S,
Kiely P, Celeste D, and Ali B spoke about the
consistent beauty of our hill and how each
Comanche sister contributes to the nature of
this sacred place.
The new Comanche tribal officers then
received their bracelets and bibs, presented
by our tribal sponsors Jane Anne B, Hannah
G, and Cate O. Each officer promised to accept
the responsibilities and honors associated with
their respective positions and to strive to be a
positive example for the tribe.
Leader Maggie W then distributed the
weekly awards. High point junior was awarded
to Talley K, high point intermediate to Noe
H, and lastly rock pile leader was awarded
to Amelia C and Katie W. The spirit stick was
awarded to Reagan M, the megaphone was
awarded to Rachel S, the softball to Maggie
D and the war canoe paddle to Doodle S for
their hard work throughout the week.
As part of our sacred tradition, each
Comanche placed a candle on our precious
rockpile at the close of our first tribal hill.
Each girl then joined hands with another in a
friendship circle, where recited Squish’s prayer
and sang the Comanche Tribal Song and Taps.

Tejas Tribal Hill
6
On Thursday night, the Tejas climbed
their sacred tribal hill for the first time this
term. For new Tejas, this climb was especially
important because it officially initiated
them into the tribe. For Hilltoppers, it was
bittersweet because it was their last first
tribal hill.
First, the Tejas climbed their lower hill.
Elizabeth M started the night off with the
opening prayer. Activities chair Autumn L
welcomed the tribe and offered the week’s
activities. Next, new Tejas were introduced
to their tribal big sisters. Choral Director Lily
B taught the tribe the toasts to the Aztecs
and Comanches and the tribal song. Head
Cheerleader Peachie K handed out friendship
awards, and then Kat D closed the Tejas in
prayer.
As the Tejas climbed to upper hill, 12
candlelight girls illuminating the path greeted
them. Lucy Jane H recited the opening prayer
once everyone had arrived. Erin F, Jeannette
M, and Daisy F recited a touching poem
asking the Lord for help to be better. Eloise
T, Kelsey R, and Nicole Z then lit three fires
representing the three most prominent Tejas
ideals: friendship, loyalty, and sportsmanship.
The tribe then listened to the reading of the
will left behind by our Tejas sisters of Second
Term 2014. The tribal officers were officially
initiated into their positions and given their
bibs and bracelets.
After our lovely sponsors Laura Garrett
J, Kaki M and Madison D welcomed the
tribe, the weekly awards were announced.
High point junior was awarded to Blaine M,
and Savannah H was awarded high point
intermediate. The spirit stick was given to
Darden P. Claire M received the Purple T
award. The softball award was given to Mary
Ann G and Lizzie F got the War Canoe paddle.
As our first tribal hill of 2015 came to an
end, Isabel W read the closing prayer. Our
leader, Susannah A, gathered the tribe into a
friendship circle and together we sang Tejas
Forever and Taps.

'Round Camp
War Canoe Tryouts
By Emily B
On Saturday afternoon,
campers of all ages gathered
at the pier to watch and
participate in the tryouts for
war canoe.
War canoe is not only one
of the camps most renowned
traditions, but also one of
the highlights of field day.
Tryouts for war canoe involve
rowing with other potential war
canoers in the participant’s tribal war canoe. Sponsors then choose campers who they
think will be able to work together to win war canoe on field day.
They practice, with the help of their sponsors, every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday,
during the term. Making war canoe is a privilege and an honor. War canoer Nina M
said, “I am looking forward
to participating and hopefully
winning war canoe.”
Though the tryouts
only lasted a few hours,
their implications will be felt
throughout the term as each
war canoe participant strives to
do their best and eventually to
help their tribe to win field day.
Congratulations to all who
made it!

On Top of the Hill Hilltopper Cookout 2015
9
ivivva Glow Yoga Party
By Counselor Milli M
By Hilltopper, Lizzie F
Among the
many starry nights
of Waldemar, one
shines brightest in a
hilltopper’s memory.
A picturesque view
of a hill country
sunset, s’mores,
and lots of laughs
and smiles make the hilltopper cookout one never to forget.
As campers, we are often reminded of how many memories
are made at Waldemar, but as we hilltoppers approach our
final summer as campers, this truth begins to manifest itself
in every aspect of our time left at camp. The night began
with excitement, as we piled into our counselors’ cars for an
uphill retreat on the grounds of our director’s house, which
was equipped with 50 cozy beds made for a sleepless but
comforting night. As we dined on pizza, there was much
sharing of bug spray, along with plenty of stories and laughs
to go around. Marsha and her pets welcomed us to her
beautiful home where the exchanging of stories and laughs
continued. Surrounded by such beauty of a lovely home, a
gorgeous view and countless stars, it became increasingly
difficult to close our eyes to the world around us. As morning
came, we headed back to camp with content hearts,
strengthened friendships and a memory to last forever.
On Tuesday evening, we had the privilege of meeting
three wonderful yoga instructors and ivivva representatives
from Austin, TX. They brought yoga mats and glow necklaces
for everyone! We turned out all the lights in DJ Lodge and
they showed us easy yoga poses and more difficult poses
while some music was playing. I sat in the back with a few
other counselors, some had yoga experience and some did
not. All of us enjoyed it equally and we all learned new yoga
poses! While in a peace pose, lying on our backs “letting
the earth push into our bodies” I noticed it was so quiet and
actually peaceful.
As it came to a close, everyone was relaxed, but still sad
it was over. When they told the campers they could keep
the yoga mats everyone was ecstatic! I heard one camper
leave DJ Lodge saying “that it was the best night of my life!”
I hope something like that can continue for awhile
because I know my kampong girls and I went to bed stretched
out and at peace with our bodies and minds.

MTV Dance Party
10
By Jacqueline P
It was a sight to behold Saturday night as all the campers
reconnected with their summer friends and greeted new ones. As
the girls gathered in Ora Johnson in front of a gigantic white sheet in
anticipation for the music and flavorful goodies, the positive energy
for the next four weeks only rose.
“It was really cool how we got time to talk to everyone right
before the music started playing.” Said Gabby T. “I got to catch up
with some of my friends from last summer and see what kampongs
they were in.”
As Carly Rae
Jepsen’s ‘I Really
Like You’ began to
play, the campers
were sent into a
frenzy of dancing,
yelling the lyrics,
and craving for the
chocolate goodness that was yet to come.
“When it started playing, I couldn’t decide if I wanted to get
a smore or keep dancing,” said high senior, Madi S. Adding to the
enthusiasm for the traditional camp treat is first year counselor, Anna
M. “I ate the smore of my life,” said Anna.
In addition to the graham cracker and chocolate treat came the
delicious snow cones. While the campers enjoyed the icy goodness
on a hot and humid Texas evening, there was a price to pay for the
serving counselors.
“The snow cone juice was everywhere,” said former camper,
Audrey D. “It tie dyed my shirt. I guess it didn’t help when I was
dancing around to the Kelly Clarkson song.”
As the new moon began to rise and shine intensely on the
grounds of Camp Waldemar, it became evident that the first term
of the summer was going to be a special one. Each division was
dismissed for bedtime until the 41 hilltoppers were left to enjoy their
last opening camp dance as campers.
“It was special to be able to hang out with my sister who’s a
counselor and enjoy the last time we get to experience this as we
are.” Said hilltopper, Sophie H.

Miss Manners Visits Waldemar
One of the time honored traditions here at camp is that of trying to instill
impeccable table manners. Of course we don’t talk with our mouths full, we put napkins
in our laps and we use our knives and forks properly, but that is just the beginning.
Just read how exacting the campers are trying to be. Their table grades are a
small yard stick of their progress, but the proof in the pudding is years later when
they are chomping hot dogs or eating at the finest restaurants.
Yardstick for Table Grades
The Camper:
1.
…is prompt to meals.
2. …waits to drink her water or tea until blessing is sung and all at her table are
seated.
3. …helps with the passing of plates (using two hands) and is always attentive
and responsive to the requests and needs of others.
4. …maintains good posture and does not put her elbows on the table.
The prime objective of the
Waldemar War Whoop© is
to inform, to entertain, and
5. …waits until the hostess begins eating to begin her meal.
6. …eats slowly and chews with her mouth closed and does not talk until she is
finished chewing.
7. …uses her silverware correctly.

8. …uses her fingers only for acceptable “finger foods”.

9. …eats and drinks a reasonable amount of everything and not an enormous
amount of one thing. She can ask for seconds on food and/or drinks.

to be interesting and pleasant and includes all table companions conversing

12. …remains at the table and is patient until all have finished their meal and the
