ADVANCING THE MESSAGE
Idaho Meth Project Makes Waves in 2014
In 2014 the Idaho Meth Project continued many of its successful events – pool parties,
movie nights, and Spring Fling Safety Summits – but we flourished with several
new ventures too. 2014 saw our first alternative school graduation celebration at
Cassia High, ice skating at Idaho Ice World, skateboarding in Salmon, a teen concert
in Lincoln County, corn mazes in Meridian, an Idaho Drug Free Youth Block Party
in Coeur d’ Alene, and night skiing at Bogus Basin! Kudos to our dedicated Teen
Advisory Council for their support of these great outreach events.
Last year the NOT EVEN ONCE message was shared in over 200 presentations
throughout Idaho. While our primary focus remains middle, junior and senior high
schools, we also participated in three community forums in Lapwai, Kamiah, and
Rigby. 53% of the presentations were conducted in rural communities (population
less than 10,000). While vigorously promoting our Meth Prevention Lesson, we
also piloted Over-the-Counter/Prescription Drug Abuse materials in select schools
during the fall semester.
Thanks to a grant from the Millennium Fund, billboards were added in select areas
throughout Idaho. Impact Radio Group generously donated airtime for the Project’s
ads across six stations. Parents often use the billboards and radio ads as conversation
starters with their teens.
Our primary fundraiser once again was Givin’ Meth The Boot in Idaho Falls. Mountain
View Charity (Mountain View Hospital’s Foundation) was the signature sponsor for
the fifth year. Platinum sponsors were Cooper Norman, CWI, Ball Ventures/Snake
River Landing and Zion’s Bank. We were thrilled to have Governor C.L. “Butch”
Otter as our guest auctioneer again.
Many valued corporate, foundation, and individual partners also stepped up to aid
The Idaho Meth Project in its mission. The staff is humbled daily by the generosity
of Idahoans, from the personal $10 gift to larger foundation grants. The Idaho Meth
Project is fortunate to have such dedicated supporters in the communities we serve.
SECOND CHANCES
Idaho Meth Project Partners with Idaho Youth
ChalleNGe Academy
In 2014 we began an informal partnership with the
Idaho Youth ChalleNGe Academy. The Academy
is a statewide military-like residential program
located in Pierce, Idaho. Their motto is “We
believe in Second Chances”. Many of the teens
attending the six-month program have dropped out
of school, and often have a history of substance
abuse or come from homes where addiction is a
part of everyday life. We meet with the cadets prior to their graduation and present
the Meth Prevention Lesson. We also create dialogue and candid discussion about
their fears and concerns about returning home, challenges they will run into, and how
to avoid drug use. It has been so rewarding to interact with the cadets, and we look
forward to the opportunity to work with the 2015-1 and 2015-2 classes!
PROVIDING RESOURCES
Meth Prevention
Lesson Available
for Every School
The Meth Prevention Lesson is the
cornerstone of our education platform.
It is designed to be highly engaging
with the students, and utilizes our
methproject.org website materials.
Students learn the components of Meth,
its short- and long-term effects on the
body, and how its abuse affects family
and other personal relationships.
It is posted on Idaho Department of
Education’s website as an approved
resource for the Drug Abuse core
standards for g rades 7-12. A
complimentary CD copy of our Meth
Prevention Lesson was mailed to all
Idaho secondary schools in March. To
ensure that health and PE teachers are
comfortable utilizing it, training sessions
were offered at the Idaho Association of
Health, Physical Education, Recreation,
and Dance (IAHPERD) statewide
conference in August. Almost 100
teachers attended an education session!
TEENS ON THE MARCH
Students and Volunteers Get Involved
on Meth Awareness Day
On November 29th, Idahoans came together in a number of ways for Meth
Awareness Day. Teens in Nampa, Boise, and St. Maries rallied to bring
awareness to Meth addiction and its effects in the community. In Boise, teens
and volunteers met at the State Capitol and marched through the Saturday
Market, receiving cheers and honks as they walked. Teen Advisory Council
member Kayla Cocozzo and volunteer Jason Zimmerman both appeared on
one of two stories that ran on KTVB News Channel 7.
Cyn Reneau, Director of Education and Development, and Shane Anderson,
Idaho Meth Project’s 2014 Volunteer of the Year, conducted thirteen school
presentations that week sharing their personal stories and answering candid
questions from the students. Executive Director, Adrean Cavener, also appeared
on KID Newsradio 590 AM/92.1 FM in Idaho Falls to urge parents to talk to
their kids about the dangers of Meth use.

Letters to Idaho Meth Project Staff and Volunteers
“
Thank you for sharing your story. I know what it is like
living around/with a meth addict. My dad used to do meth
but stopped around the time I was three but by that time I
was living with my soon-to-be stepdad. It makes me happy
to learn more about the drug. Thank you.

Our presentation was to a group of At Risk kids on a Friday right
before school got out - a difficult time - but the students were engulfed
by Cyn’s story. She did an awesome job and I feel she really impacted
our students. Her presentation was a wonderful kick off for our Red
Ribbon Week.
”
- principal
I wish I had contacted the Idaho meth project earlier…your presentation answered a lot of questions all the way to legalization of
marijuana. Great job. I wish the whole school was able to hear this presentation. It was nice to have small intimate classes listening
because even shy kids asked questions. Well done.
