Berita Sekolah - Newsletter Term 2 No 3
On the 5th of June, Home Island Campus hosted the
whole school assembly and a very successful cultural
day. Students participated in cultural activities such as
basket weaving, cooking, bunga api, net casting, henna
and batik. We had the assistance of many grandparents
and mothers who volunteered to help us for the whole
day. We would like to say “thanks-a-million” to our
volunteers for giving us your time to assist us with the
cultural activities.

Design & Technology - Home Island
Students have been busy in Design and Technology on Home Island over the semester
building and creating. A highlight was at the last Home Island assembly where the Year 2-4
class strapped on their hand made paper-mache dinosaur heads and did the ‘Dinosaur
Stomp’. The Year 1’s have been busy too making trolling reels and new rods. They are
looking forward to fishing with them in the lagoon soon!

WEST ISLAND K-2 CLASS
In the K-2 class on West Island we believe that we can
make a difference to the world we live in just by using
our own two hands. We know that by working together
we can make things change and can make our world a
better place like Ben Harper’s song ‘With my own two
hands’ describes.
We are active members of our community who are keen to
make Cocos a peaceful place and enjoy reaching out to our
Cocos Malay neighbours in our whole school assemblies
and Integration days, our annual school Harmony Day
and the cultural activities we include in our program.
We believe in sustainable
practices and making our world
a brighter place so are involved
in the ‘Waterwise’ Schools
Program and growing produce
in our class garden which we
use in our cooking programs.
Next time you are at the school
come and ask us to show you
what our small hands have
been up to, we can give you a
taste of something growing in
our garden, make you a cup of
lemongrass tea or even show
you how to crack open a sea
almond!
See you soon.
The Keys for Life program gives Year 10 students, knowledge and skills to prepare them for obtaining their Learner’s Permit
and becoming safe drivers. This can be challenging for students at Cocos as they have less access to the experiences of
driving situations required to pass their Learner’s test. After completion of the program students can sit their Learners
exam at school and get a discount on their Learners Permit.
As an introduction the Year 9’s completed a car challenge during their camp to Christmas Island.
When weather, road or
environment conditions are poor
then drivers need to change their
speed .
People with an ACROD permit
(people with a disability) can park
here NOT that you have to be in
a wheelchair to park here.
Nurse Steph showed them what
to do to help if they are involved
in a car accident.
Well done to students for their great participation!
School Psychologist Visits next term are as follows –Week 4, 18th-22nd Aug & Week 8, 15th–19th Sept

SCHOOL NURSE NEWS
Ramadan Health tips,
Fasting for kids
Many children fast during Ramadan. Even though they are not required to fast before the
onset of puberty, many parents encourage children to fast at a younger age to get them
accustomed to the ritual of fasting.
Since they may be new to this and need getting used to the sense of discipline that
fasting requires, it is essential to teach them the right way to do it, especially since
Ramadan here on Cocos is so hot and humid.
Fasting is not always easy on the little ones given that they are more active, require more
energy and fluids. Who should fast and how long a child should fast is a question for
parents to consider. Parents should assess the child’s ability to fast based on their
health, activity level, tolerance to hunger and eating frequency.
Children should be encouraged to avoid high-intensity exercise and drink lots of fluid
during non-fasting hours to remain hydrated. The sahur meal (before sunrise meal) is an
essential part of fasting for children. They should have fibre-rich foods such as whole
wheat cereals, whole grains, legumes, fruit and vegetables and good sources of protein
such as lean meats, nut butter, eggs and dairy products to stay full for longer. Try to
have them avoid high-sugar foods, since it will increase their cravings and provide no
nutrients for the calories. Salty foods should also be limited to avoid thirst.
One mistake a lot of parents make is forcing children to overeat at sahur or iftar (after
sunset meal). Overeating will only cause indigestion, bloating and discomfort. In some
cases, it is better for children to split iftar into two meals to prevent overloading of
food. Carbonated drinks, and spicy and fried foods should also be avoided. It is essential
for children to meet their calorie requirements during the non-fasting hours to stay
nourished.
The most important thing is eating a variety of foods from all food groups, such as whole
grains (wholegrain cereals, brown pasta, wholegrain breads and quinoa), fruits and
vegetables, dairy products (milk, yoghurt and cheese), meat and meat alternatives (beef,
chicken, turkey, eggs, nuts and legumes) and healthy fats (olive/canola oil, avocado, fatty
fish and flax seeds), keeping well hydrated and being lightly active during the fasting
hours.
Selamat berpuasa
