Sandy Lewis and Rondi Erickson love Duluth. They grew up here; centered their
family and work lives here; and retired here. Duluth has hunting and fishing, hockey
and camping, and their favorite outdoor pastime–collecting lake-polished rocks from
their family outings. Somewhere between the sunrise over the big lake and the
golden leaves of fall they had a vision. This city is safe and beautiful, vibrant and
bustling but still small enough to be friendly. They had to share it.
Comfortable, culturally sensitive, and full of natural light, Kiviranta is more than a
home. It’s an ode to Minnesota, designed by one of its premiere architects and
perched where the forest meets the lake. Would you like to step inside?

The wilderness still exists in northern Minnesota. The state has over 15,000 lakes, 16 million
acres of forest, and more shoreline than California, Florida, and Hawaii combined.

Kiviranta is just twenty minutes from Duluth’s downtown. With an urban population of approximately 131,000
people, Duluth and its environs act as a regional center as well as a clean, safe, quiet place to live.
At Kiviranta, you are an hour and twenty minutes south of the Lutsen Mountains, an hour and 45 minutes away from
the arts colony of Grand Marais, and two hours from the 1 million miles of untamed wilderness in the Boundary

David Salmela is the award-winning architect and designer of
Kiviranta. He grew up on a dairy farm in central Minnesota
and taught himself design, then spent 46 years discovering
appropriate design opportunities within the Minnesota culture.
David has won over 50 regional and national design awards,
including National AIA Honor Awards and the AIA Minnesota
Gold Medal. His logic incorporates natural light and is heavily
influenced by Minnesota’s Scandinavian roots.

His company Salmela Architect has focused on projects that
transform the region. Their collaborative design team created the common interest
community of Jackson Meadow within the Swedish immigrant settlement of Marine
on St. Croix, Minnesota. They have also created an urban design complex of contextual houses on the Duluth hillside. David’s vision for Kiviranta is an 8-home North
Shore luxury development that will reflect the power and beauty of Lake Superior.

Kiviranta means “stone beach” or “rock shore” in Finnish. 30 acres of the
33-acre property will be protected from development and include a
residents-only trail network for hiking, biking, skiing, and snowshoeing.

The buildings hug the hill like a fallen tree so each unit has a view of the lake.
They appear to float in a “sea” of native grass and are surrounded by pines.
Kiviranta’s full-time caretaker will handle concierge services such as
airport transportation, grocery or firewood deliveries and more.
At Kiviranta, you'll experience natural beauty and
moods of Lake Superior from your east-facing terrace.
A common area includes a European style courtyard with
walking paths and a one-of-a-kind pavilion with a cozy fireplace.
Cook for a crowd with Cambria-engineered quartz countertops,
modern custom cabinetry and premium appliances.
The overall design theme is modern Scandinavian. Painted wood casework,
slate floors and stucco exteriors come together in clean, sharp lines.
Natural light is a dominant theme in the property. Every
home will enjoy views of Lake Superior, a large motorized
skylight and sweeping windows with motorized shades.
Cross-ventilation and strategically placed vegetation cool the homes in summer while
triple-glazed windows, heavy insulation and Danish wood stoves keep them warm in winter.
