GENERAL INFORMATION
The MMEW is a three-day workshop for K-12 Earth Science
educators and pre-service teachers that offers short courses and
field trips focused on the geology and mineral resources of
Minnesota. The upcoming 18th annual MMEW will be held June
16-18, 2015 at the University of Minnesota Duluth (UMD). On the
first day of the workshop, participants may choose among 16
different short course topics taught by professional geologists,
academics, government scientists, and K-12 educators. Many of
the courses introduce curriculum ideas for various grade levels.
The second and third days of the workshop will involve field trips
designed to familiarize participants with the geology and mineral
resources in the Duluth area and the North Shore.
Participants will receive a variety of resource materials including
rock and mineral samples, lesson plan ideas, posters, maps,
videos, and other useful information. Upon completion of the
workshop, attendees will be provided with a certificate of
participation indicating total contact hours.
REGISTRATION
Registration cost for the workshop is $40. This fee covers all short
course and field trip costs, breakfast and lunch for all three days,
and a picnic dinner on Tuesday evening planned at Lester River
Park.
This year, registration will be conducted through an on-line
meeting service. The registration link will be available from the
MMEW website beginning March 4th. Early registration ends
Monday, June 1st, after which the registration cost will increase
to $55. Soon after this date, registrants will be informed of their

SHORT COURSE OFFERINGS – The 16 courses being offered
during the four short course sessions are shown on the opposite
page. See the MMEW website for course descriptions and
information on instructors. Participants are asked to identify their
first and second course choice for each session when registering.
FIELD TRIPS – Two days of field trips are designed to familiarize
participants with the geology and mineral resources in the Duluth
area and along the North Shore. Day 1 will include a morning
tour of Cliffs taconite facility near Silver Bay, followed by visits to
several classic geological locations along the North Shore. Day 2
will start with a tour of Rio Tinto/Kennecott’s exploration office in
Tamarack, MN where drill core from the Ni-Cu-PGE deposit
discovered there in 2001 will be viewed. On the return trip to
Duluth, visits will include slate exposures at Jay Cooke State Park,
a basalt quarry, and several exposures of the Duluth Complex.
Transportation by coach bus and box lunches will be provided.
Trips will leave from and return to the UMD campus.
SPECIAL EVENT – On Tuesday evening, participants are
invited to travel by school bus to Lester River Park for a picnic
dinner. After the picnic, the bus will take participants on a tour
of several sites that were severely damaged by the floods that
hit Duluth in June of 2012. The tour will be guided by a local
hydrologist who will explain the damage created and the
remediation efforts that followed. The meal and touring
activities are free of charge.
LODGING – Again this year, special donations to the
workshop by the Aggregate & Ready Mix Association of
Minnesota, the Iron Mining Association, and Mining Minnesota
will provide lodging at UMD dormitories at discounted rates.
See the VisitDuluth website for more information on lodging
options in the Duluth area.
