Crestwood Middle School May 2009
April 2009 Dr. Andrew. Hill, Principal Janet M. Zimmerman, Principal of Curriculum Crestwood Middle School Dr. Andrew Hill Miss Janet Zimmerman Principal Principal of Curriculum Dear Parent/Guardian(s), It’s hard to believe that we are almost halfway through our last quarter of this school year. Interim reports for the fourth quarter will be sent home with students on Friday, May 1st. Traditionally the last month of school is jam packed with many activities and end of the year recognitions and this May/June is no exception. I would like to focus in this article on our grade level honor assemblies and the CMS family picnic that we will have at the end of May, but please give special attention to the May/June calendar at the end of this newsletter where a detailed listing of events, dates, and times can be found for all activities. Traditionally we have held an evening honor’s assembly recognizing students in all three grade levels at one time. This year, we are going to try a different approach. We will be holding a separate honor’s assembly for each grade level during our school day. The schedule will be as follows: Tuesday, May 26th 1:30 p.m.Sixth Grade Honors Assembly Wednesday, May 27th 1:30 p.m.Eighth Grade Honors Assembly Thursday, May 28th 1:30 p.m.Seventh Grade Honors Assembly Each assembly will be held in our gym. We realize that the change in time will present a problem to some of our parent/guardian(s), but we also realize that other parent/guardian(s) have not been able to attend evening functions due to work commitments. Each assembly will be a mix of awards that focus on academics. In addition, we will recognize students for their efforts to display the personality characteristics that David Lee Morgan, Jr. has been discussing with our students this year, ex. attitude. Our intent is to recognize each student for one of the personality characteristics that he/she has worked hard on this school year. Our second annual CMS family picnic will be held on Saturday, May 30th from 11:00-2:00 p.m. at CMS. There will be free food and games to play and the picnic will be held rain or shine. Please feel free to bring your family and friends and help us celebrate CMS. We hope that you will be able to join us for our honor assemblies, family picnic, and the many other events that the end of our school year brings. If you should have any questions, please feel free to contact me at [email protected] or at 330-274-2249. Thank you for your continued support of CMS. Andrew Hill Dear Parents/Guardians, The Ohio Achievement Testing for 2008-2009 is now behind us. Thank you so very much for your help and assistance in preparing your child(ren) for the tests. The students were awake, fed, and most of all they were here. The results of the tests should be in our hands by the middle of June. You will receive a copy of your child(ren)’s results in the fall. The final interim reports will be sent home with your child(ren) on Friday, May 1, 2009. Your child(ren)’s final report card will be mailed to your home. If you should still owe any fees, please try to clear all accounts before the end of this school year. Thank you for taking care of those responsibilities. Wow! Once again, the CMS Drama Department is hard at work. Please mark your calendars for either Friday, May 1st or Saturday, May 2nd to enjoy over 50 students demonstrate their acting abilities in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Mrs. Housel and Mrs. Welch have directed the CMS plays for the past ten years. It is always amazing to see the sixth, seventh, and eighth graders on stage sharing their various acting talents. So many times we only see the athletic side of our students. I can assure you that you will not be disappointed. If at any time I can be of assistance to you and/or your family, please do not hesitate to contact me at 330-274-2249 or through my email address of www.zimmerman@crestwood. sparcc.org. Yours in education, Janet Zimmerman Crestwood Middle School Page 2 Lynne Morrison John Vanags School Counselor Athletic Director Dear Parent/Guardian, By Any Other Name: A Coach’s View The OAT’s are behind us and that is a sure sign that school will soon be coming to a close. However, many exciting events are still on the horizon. The 8th graders will be very busy over the next several weeks as they celebrate their transition into high school. The school is buzzing with talk of the 8th grade dance, the 8th grade picnic, and what the freshman schedules will look like. This is an exciting time for all of them. The High School Guidance Counselors will be back to distribute freshman schedules in time for our 8th graders to visit the high school on June 2nd and 3rd. Permission slips will be coming home soon. Simple things are the best. Simple pleasures: Watching a sunrise Strolling in the forest Forming butterflies on freshly fallen snow Let us not forget the much anticipated transition to middle school for our incoming 6th grade class. The Crestwood Middle School Guidance Department has coordinated two visitation days for the 5th grade class to take place on May 27th and 28th. Students will visit the middle school for a brief orientation and tour. Prior to their visit, I will visit the Intermediate building to discuss middle school and answer questions the 5th graders may have. Frolicking in fall leaves On Tuesday, May 12th, 2009 at 6:30 PM, there will be an orientation session for the parent/guardian(s) of our upcoming 6th grade class. We understand the stress and anxiety that is associated with the transition to middle school. Information to be provided will include scheduling, extracurricular activities, discipline, and developmental expectations. Perfect practice makes perfect The week of May 18th, SAVE participants will be coordinating events and theme days to spread the message of non-violence in schools. They are working hard at putting together information on important topics such as bullying, conflict resolution, healthy relationships, and more. Ask your student what he/she learns. Leadership will be holding their annual Penny Drive the week of May 4th. Money will be donated to the Animal Protection League and to an organization that raises money to purchase mosquito nets for people in Africa to prevent the spread of malaria. We appreciate your support of this important cause. As the school year starts to wind down please call me with any questions or concerns. I always look forward to hearing from you. Lynne Morrison Listening to music Watching a favorite movie…for the tenth time Simple rules: No pain, no gain There is no “I” in team A Simple guide for a young athlete: You have three names: One you are born with One your parents gave you One you make yourself Simply ask yourself – “How am I doing?” Crestwood Middle School Page 3 Clay and Culture in Ohio Guest artist, George Woidek, from Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio, spent the day at the Middle School. “Clay and Culture in Ohio” was the subject of the lesson taught that day. Students from each grade level made small bowls from white clay and decorated them with liquid colored clay substances known as “Slip”. The various colored slips were painted on the bowls in patterns and lines much as the early Ohio Native Americans would have. The art lesson was combined with a great Social Studies lesson as Mr. Woidek talked about Native American life and shared examples of precious Indian pots from his own collection. Students then had the opportunity to show off their wonderful ware at the Fine Arts and Science Expo. We are grateful to the Hiram Community Trust for their kind grant to allow this workshop to take place. Thank you for your generosity, it was a wonderful experience. Guest Musician The middle school was visited by Matt Rhine, a musician and student at Cleveland State University. Students worked with Mr. Rhine to write T.V. jingles. Mr. Rhine instructed the students on the basics of writing a jingle. They were given the task of writing their own jingle for a product. Small groups were able to use the keyboards for instruments and sound effects. We have some very creative students! Some of these jingles were performed at the Fine Arts night. This activity was funded by a grant from the Hiram Trust. In the future, one of our students might be a famous jingle writer! Crestwood Middle School Page 4 Fine Arts Night and Science Expo On April 2nd, the first Fine Arts and Science Expo was held at Crestwood Middle School. The event was made possible in part by teacher grants from the Hiram Community Trust Fund and the Akron Council of Engineering and Science Societies. Guests enjoyed observing the clay pots created by students with guest artist George Woideck of Young Audiences of Northeast Ohio. Also on display were paintings, masks and other forms of artwork from all three grade levels. Soloists and ensembles entertained visitors as they entered the small cafeteria transformed into an art gallery. Many of the students performed the jingles they created with guest musician, Matt Rhine, from Cleveland State. In the large cafeteria, everyone had the opportunity to participate in hands-on science with some stations supplying kits for further investigation at home. Student scientists shared their knowledge of various topics including minerals, fossils, chemical changes and the rainforest. Highlighting the evening were the eighth grade student inventions on display in the science rooms. Crestwood Middle School Page 5 Scope it Out! In Mrs. Corr’s sixth grade class, students have learned that there are many tools available in science that help extend their senses in order to make better observations of the world around us. We have used metric rulers, triple beam balances, and graduated cylinders to record observations about length, mass and volume. The microscope is yet another tool to aid observation. Students learned how to use and care for microscopes, enjoyed viewing the many prepared slides we had available, and even learned to make their own wet mounts using pond water. We are hoping to observe many other pond organisms as the weather becomes warmer and populations of these protists increase. There’s a new trend at Crestwood Middle School. Walking! The Health and Physical Education Departments have put together a Walking/Jogging Club for students. The guidelines are pretty easy. Go to the gym (or outside), bring a friend, music to listen to and start walking or jogging! Mrs. Manfrass, Mrs. McKinney and Mr. Vanags established the program to reward students that were able to meet academic expectations. Our Walking Club provides an opportunity to build positive student/staff connections, and it also makes a positive difference in the students’ physical and mental well being. Studies have shown that regular physical activity improves brain function and actually protects against cognitive decline. We are so excited that the Walking Club has been such a success! We have had over 350 participants and have logged well over 20,000 miles! Recently the Parent Advisory Committee (PAC) jumped on board and purchased us 75 brand new pedometers to enhance the Walking Club! Soon everyone will be counting their steps and will be logging them on an online website called America on the Move. Who knows…maybe we’ll walk all the way to the Rocky Mountains via the Oregon Trail! If you have any questions about our Walking Club, please feel free to contact us! [email protected], [email protected] or [email protected]! Hopefully we’ll see you out there walking!
