There have been lots of achievements to celebrate during the year for all involved at school. Our ‘End of Year’ celebrations have included our Day Out at Drayton Manor on 8 July, our Presentation Evening on 10 July and there will be a Whole School End of Term Assembly on 18 July. In February this year, Crestwood School was recognised as being in the Top 50 Most Improved Secondary Schools Nationally. On 4 June, I was delighted to have collected the SSAT Educational Outcomes Award 2014 on behalf of all staff and students of Crestwood School in recognition of being in the Top 20% of Schools Nationally for Outstanding Student Progress. Also this year, we have been confirmed as a Royal Horticultural Society (RHS) Partner School and staff and students have formed a gardening club. We have been recognised to have met the criteria to become an Affiliated Arkwright School and are committed to the Arkwright Mission of identifying, inspiring and nurturing future leaders in engineering and related areas of design. These are just some of this year’s achievements. Our Year 11 students conducted themselves extremely well throughout their exams and enjoyed a fantastic Prom on 27 June. All have secured themselves places on apprenticeships and at local colleges. We wish them all the very best for the future and especially on 21 August – exam results day. Our new Year 7 students attended Induction Evening and then Induction Day on 2 and 3 July and we are very much looking forward to them joining us in September. Continued on Page 2 OFSTED ‘GOOD’ We are pleased to announce that following our recent Ofsted Inspection Crestwood is now recognised as a ‘Good’ School. Email us on: [email protected] Crestmag News News The Crestwood School Magazine We welcomed Ofsted for our Inspection on 25 and 26 June. Staff and students were excellent throughout the two days. Thank you also to any parents/carers who took the time to visit and comment on Ofsted’s online survey Parent View (www.parentview.ofsted.gov.uk). We are delighted with the official confirmation that we are a Good school. Our formal inspection report is available to view via our website and www.ofsted.gov.uk. I am very proud that we are a school where Student Voice is listened to and valued. The Student Council regularly meet with specific agenda items which require feedback from me. Students play an important role in departmental health checks which see their opinions on lessons, marking etc feedback into departments. Students play a key role in the appointment of new staff to the school as well as volunteering to help out in open events and parent evenings. Our Buddies, Ambassadors and Prefects do a really great job representing the school and helping our new students and visitors. During June, I was more than impressed by the Year 10 applicants for Prefect positions next year. The students were so enthusiastic and keen to take on responsibility. The students then shortlisted for Head Boy, Deputy Head Boy and Head Girl and Deputy Head Girl, each presented themselves impeccably and professionally during interview. Congratulations to all new Prefects and the Head Boy Lewis Richards, Deputy Head Boy Tom Bedworth, Head Girl Zara Rose and Assistant Head Girl Neesha Aston. I wholeheartedly support and promote the raising of student aspirations at every opportunity. Students’ willingness to support and promote the school and develop themselves through extra responsibility is really apparent and they are excellent role models. There will be a lot of building work during the Summer. The Quad area will be completely transformed. There will be an additional area for students in the Science Foyer and two store rooms in Art will be knocked through to create a learning/ICT resource. Everyone will reap the benefits of these improvements through the next year. Very best wishes to Miss Smith who leaves at the end of this year and, whilst Mrs Tompkins is retiring, she will be teaching here for a little longer covering Mrs Boddy’s maternity leave. I am really looking forward to the new school year starting on Wednesday 3 September. In the meantime, I wish everyone a very safe and happy holiday. Headteacher, Tony Bowles, was delighted to accept a SSAT Educational Outcomes Award 2014 on behalf of all staff and students of Crestwood School in recognition of being in the Top 20% of Schools Nationally for Outstanding Student Progress. Team Musical To end the first ever term of Team Musical Theatre at Crestwood, the students will be putting their new found skills and hard work to practice in a performance on Sunday 13 July at 2.00 pm at Crestwood School. The students have all worked exceptionally hard this term learning the three key skills required for musical theatre whilst learning songs, scenes and routines from Hairspray and Little Shop of Horrors. Next term we are excited to announce that we will be starting to audition and rehearse for a full musical production. If you are interested in joining Team Crestwood for next term we would love to see you at the performance on the 13 July (tickets are £1). New members can contact Claire on 07872924562 claire@ teammusicaltheatre.co.uk Mr Bowles says “At Crestwood we aim to develop independent young people who truly believe ‘Anything is Possible’. We encourage every individual to have an active mind, a sense of understanding, compassion for others and the courage to act on their beliefs. We foster a culture of high achievement and aspiration where only our best is good enough”. We are extremely proud of all the recent years’ success garnered by the school – now in its fourth consecutive year of improvement – and confirmed in February 2014 as one of the Top 50 Secondary Schools Nationally for that improvement. Following their training session, the new team members settled in well, with some already performing above their roles! Our existing team members continue to be excellent role models and we have treasured memories of the evening of 7 March 2014, when Hannah Jeffries, Tom Churchman and Liam Walters were short listed in the Dudley Youth Awards, for their commitment and hard work in the Hub. GAMES BRITANNIA During the year, students have enjoyed participating on trips to see the authors Jonathan Stroud and Eoin Colfer. At Crestwood, Holly Smale visited us in the Autumn Term and David Massey, on World Book Day. Everyone was excited to welcome Matt Windle, “The Poet with Punch,” on 7 July 2014. I really enjoyed the part when actors were on the stage, acting out the scenes from his new book, “W.A.R.P. The Hangman’s Revolution.” It was hilarious when they got volunteers. I enjoyed it when he asked us who wanted to be killed on stage. It was so funny! This is the third, but best author I’ve seen. This was a fun experience. I bought the first book, “Artemis Fowl.” His new book seems really good. Chloe Page, 7I “I enjoyed Eoin Colfer because the extracts out of his book were brilliant. He got a man and a woman to act out the extracts. He also interacted with the audience. I got picked out to act like I got set on fire by embers from a fire. I had to run around the stage. People said I was brilliant at acting.” Liam Walters, 8D “I really enjoyed Eoin Colfer because he was funny and I liked his book and the best part was when he read his book.” Kiran Akhtar, 7E “My favourite part was when he read parts of his book. Chloe Page was the very first person to ask Eoin a question, setting the scene for others to follow. Comments made by the students, subsequent to their visit to see Eoin included: “Eoin Colfer was really funny and is a great writer.” Liam Fradgley, 7D Games Britannia Students also got a chance to work with professional developers Tom Sampson and Griffin Warner from Sumo Digital where they gained an introduction to creating games for mobile platforms using GameMaker: Studio. Our Year 7 students have enjoyed their reading sessions, in the Hub, during registration. The highlight of the day for most of us was the opportunity to use the Oculus Rift Virtual Reality headset which allowed us to experience a number of games and simulations using the device. The Rift allows users to ‘experience the heightened levels of immersion provided to games, and discover some of the potential future applications of this exciting technology’. The Rift was a little too immersive for some with Thomas Bedworth ending up on the floor after being attacked by a virtual spider. Luckily he recovered for the journey home. The experience best described by Christian Markham as ‘awesome’. Some took the opportunity to support the football, by reading football books and magazines. Others have kept their knowledge of current affairs up to date, by watching the news on the news channel. The Hub continues to provide a service to our students and is extremely popular for completing homework, both before school and at lunchtimes. We are all looking forward to more exciting times in the Hub next academic year and especially to hosting additional author visits. After a long but thoroughly enjoyable day our students arrived back at Crestwood with ambitions of attending University and becoming the makers of the next big game. Along with a renewed respect for the hard work and focus required to work in the industry. Who knows, maybe the next ‘Angry Bird’ will be made by a Crestwood student! Over the last nine months the Governors have worked hard in the interests of students, staff and parents of the school. Following the last OfSTED inspection we have; • • • • Streamlined the Governing Body which now has 15 members (see list below) Re-vamped the committee structure such that we can work more efficiently Requested and received more regular information on different aspects of student attainment Checked regularly on attendance We know we still have more work to do - we, like you, want to see the school receive the ‘outstanding’ label it so deserves. Student voice will be heard more by Governors as we intend to invite students to meetings to raise points they want us to consider as well as letting them see who ‘Governors’ are and what they actually do. Governors will be visiting the school more regularly to see the day to day running of the school and have a clear picture of how well the school is doing. Exciting times are ahead. For the students one of the first things they will see is the improvement of the quad area which will be vastly improved. One of the Governors (Gary Williamson) has worked hard to assist with this. Obviously we must mention ‘lnvictus’ - the Multi Academy Trust which we hope will be set up in the new academic year. We look forward to working with Ellowes, Edgecliffe and Ounsdale schools to enrich the educational experience of all our students and staff. The school would not be as successful as it is without the hard work of the staff and students and the continued support of parents for this we thank you. Here is a list of Governing Body members. Year 7 Food Technology students learnt a little about the German culture and language whilst cooking pretzels. Poet with a Punch! Matt Windle the “Poet with Punch,” came to The Crestwood School, for the whole day, on Monday 7 July 2014. Matt is a poet, qualified plumber and a boxer! Our Year 7 and Year 9 students were treated to presentations followed by workshops. During the presentations, Matt made up a poem, which contained the names of most of the students in the hall! The students laughed when Matt made amusing comments, using their names, which demonstrated his amazing ability to write poetry instantly! During the workshops, Matt suggested different techniques to the students, to try to help them write their own poetry. Our theme was “relationships” and Matt explained poetry as “painting with words,” encouraging the students to take part by explaining the trusting relationship he has, between himself and his coach. The students had fun and some magnificent pieces of work were produced. Matt even brought along his Olympic torch and told some amusing stories about the events on the day he officially carried it and let the students hold the torch for photographs. Every year Crestwood PE staff take a group of students down to the Dell Stadium to compete in the local schools’ athletics competition. This year Chloe Chapman in Year 10 took part in the 800m and 100m events and did really well. She was invited back to the West Midlands County Competition on Saturday 14 June to compete against the best students from across the county. After running and finishing 3rd in the 100m she lined up for theU17 girls’ 800m going up against girls a full year older than herself. She ran an amazing race and won in a time of 2m 24s. Being the best in the West Midlands Chloe would now be competing in the All England finals at the Alexander Stadium on 21 June. Talent scouts from the UK squad were there too, looking for future young stars. From everyone at Crestwood, a huge congratulations goes to Chloe for getting this far. Mr Thompson Head of Year 10 PageEleven Crestmag The Crestwood School Magazine The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Duke of Edinburgh‘s Award 2014 D of E has been running at Crestwood for 4 years and this year we have had the best group of students ever! On 20 June, 15 students set out on the assessed expedition to Llangollen. All were fully prepared for the scorching weather (big bottles of water and sun cream) and looking forward to the challenge. Each group made good time on the first day and worked well, the assessor was very impressed with them. At the campsite they set themselves up and got on with cooking quickly, requiring no intervention from staff. Although they were out on the longest day of the year all students were in their tents and asleep early. Next morning all groups were up and packed away by 8.00 am and ready to get going. The assessor changed the route a bit to meet the high demands of the group allowing them extra time to explore the local area around the aqueduct. All the groups were now competing to be the first to finish and put extra effort into map reading and not making any mistakes. This paid off as all the groups made it safely to the aqueduct by mid afternoon, and then came the BIG challenge. All students had to walk out on to the aqueduct or even better all the way across it. Every one did this and felt the huge wave of achievement. So a big well done to the 15 students who are well on their way to completing the award and have developed skills for life. PageTwelve PageThirteen Research project into the Pontcysyllte aqueduct The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Emily Bywater, 10E Day One: The Pontcysyllte aqueduct was built by Thomas Telford between 1795-1805. Most of the work was supervised by experienced canal engineer William Jessop. The aqueduct is 307m long and only 3.4m wide, half the width is a footpath the other is open water. It is 38m high above the valley floor with spectacular views. The aqueduct contains 1.5 million litres of water and it takes two hours to drain. The iron used to build it was supplied by William Hazeldine from his foundries in Shrewsbury and nearby Cefn Mawr. The total cost at the time to build the aqueduct was £47,000 (That is over £4million in today’s money!) Water is fed into the aqueduct from the River Dee at the Horseshoe Falls at Llantysilio near Llangollen. We left school at 8.30 am and arrived in Llangollen about 11.00 am. We started out by walking up a road, over a small hill and then over a stile which took us near a reservoir. We carried on walking and came to a gate which we went through onto a country lane. We walked along the lane for a short while and came to a footpath; we took a bearing and entered some woods. We followed the footpath until we came to a road where we then took a bearing and checked our maps. We met up with Miss Hatton and Mrs Humpage who let us re-fill our water bottles, we stopped for a short snack before going up the mountain. We reached the top of the mountain in good time and felt proud of ourselves. After checking the map we found a path which had a steep decline, it lead to a place called ‘Worlds End’. We went over a stile, to then walk through World’s End which was a beautiful wooded area where we found 3 caves. We came across a bench near the style we had to go over so we decided to have lunch there. Pontcysyllte means ‘the bridge that connects’, this was once one of the few crossing points for coal and other resources without having to go up and down the steep valley. There are lots of other things to go and see connected to the aqueduct, for example, the tunnel along the towpaths. When going to explore the tunnels, there is a tunnel called ‘darkie’ and when see it you can tell where it gets it names from because it is really long and dark. The walk along the towpath is flat and easy to walk along and makes a great day out for all the family. The Crestwood School Magazine Report on Bronze Expedition at Llangollen 2014. by Katie Gorst. It is the tallest canal boat crossing in the world. In 2009 UNESCO made the aqueduct a masterpiece of civil engineering a world heritage site (grade 1). The Olympic torch was even carried across it on its tour of the UK prior to the 2012 games. Crestmag After lunch we went over the stile, we could tell from the map that we had to follow the footpath which gradually took us uphill. After an hour of walking we found ourselves on an extremely thin part of the footpath where there was a hill one side and a gradual drop on the other made of rocks. We walked along the thin path single file to ensure our safety. We had to get off this path and drop down a very steep slope into a wooded area, this was tough and we had to help each other a lot. When we were all safely down we took a bearing and followed the road until we came across a footpath. We then came across a fork which we saw on the map we would be taking the other path the next day. We took the path we needed to take and after a few minutes of walking we came across a large stile which had many steps. As they were high we helped each other over them. This bought us to a field which we walked along to then reach a gate which we went through and found the sign to our campsite. We went down some steep steps to the campsite over a stile which was on a bridge and reached the campsite. We then set up our tent and started cooking our meals. After having eaten and visited the stream on site we had an early night to prepare for the next day. Continued…. Day Two: After packing away all of our camping gear and having breakfast we set off. We walked up some very steep steps which we all had trouble with due to the weight of our rucksacks, but we all helped each other to reach the top. It was an enjoyable walk as it was very scenic; also on this path we found some benches that people had made for people to enjoy the view. We took a bearing at the end of the path and followed it until we saw the mini bus. We refilled our bottles then started up a steep field towards the PageFourteen PageThirteen panorama walk. During this walk we saw some very scenic rocky hills and some more sheep. We followed the route until we came to an alcove of rocks which seemed a nice place to have lunch. Once we had finished eating we carried on along the road until we came across a footpath which led into some woods. There were many different turnings off the footpath so we took a lot of bearings to ensure we were following the correct path. After 45 minutes of walking we came upon another gate leading to a road. We kept walking until we came across another stile leading to a field with cows in. We walked very quickly through this field and we went over another style out onto a road. We followed this to the main road where Mr Rollason crossed us over; we were now heading for the canal. After walking along a path and under a railway bridge we came to the canal. We stayed close to the canal until we saw a sign that said Pontcysyllte Aqueduct – we had arrived at last. We had to walk over the aqueduct which was a big challenge for me as I have a very large fear of heights. However I faced my fears and walked over it and the view was spectacular. I enjoyed the weekend a lot and would do it again but not too soon as I still ache! This is a weekend I will remember forever and would recommend anyone to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award as it is so much fun. Crestmag The Crestwood School Magazine Prom Night Crestmag Prom Night The Crestwood School Magazine This year 11 students and several staff joined us from The Brier School and truly had a great time. Deputy Head teacher of The Brier School, Alison Whitnall said “I was overwhelmed with the attitude and kindness of the Crestwood students. They included our students in photographs, dances and were genuinely inclusive towards them all.” Our students made memories that will stay with them forever! Thank you to everyone that made it a special night and all the staff who helped. A special thank you to Mr Steve Evans and Mrs Jenny Sibley for all their efforts and support I couldn’t have done it without you! PageFourteen PageFifteen Crestmag STEM Day The Crestwood School Magazine The Crestwood School was given an amazing opportunity to take 10 students on STEM day at the University of Wolverhampton. Science Technology Engineering Maths Students had the opportunity to take part in a Pharmacology and Pharmaceutical Science lecture, and got to experience dispensing medicines, counting medication and looking at the side effects using the BNF. Students even got the chance to look at prescriptions and ask vital medical questions. After a short break students were taken to a Chemistry lab and were kitted out in lab coats and goggles. First they were shown what happens when you mix certain chemicals, they even managed to turn “wine into water” and “red wine into milk”! Then Professor Craig Williams created some amazing chemical reactions, students got to see what happened when flowers and rubber are frozen in liquid nitrogen. They were also shown how to make indoor fireworks and even given a mini indoor firework display. Before lunch students had a hands-on lecture where they got to experience what happens during a Biomedical Science lecture! They extracted DNA from a Kiwi fruit and got the chance to use advanced scientific equipment. Students were also given information on how the world of science is changing and how antibiotics will one day be of no use. After lunch and in conclusion to the day, students had one final task - to study animal and wildlife behaviour. This consisted of students using a microscope and looking at leaches and other creepy crawlies. They were all found in the local area and students managed to identify 14 species of animal. Miss Hatton would like to say a big well done to all involved and a massive thanks to Wolverhampton University! Students involved were; Libby Armstrong, Chloe W, Chelsey Mason, Sian Rudkin, PageSixteen Crestmag News The Crestwood School Magazine The Big Bang Fair The Big Bang Fair was an exciting, leg tiring, brain filling, and great learning experience for all science and technology lovers. It had some of the best past and present day’s technology. An example of this was it had one of the fastest cars in the world! This amazing car broke the sound barrier reaching the record speed of 1000 kmph. The fair included a bunch of scientific and technology stalls that made the day a fun and interactive experience. Different schools and companies were there, advertising the world of science and technology and what you can do with it in later life. The day was great and really showed us what our future could hold, and how we can be the next generation of scientists! A look into the Future!!! We held our very own Future Zone careers event on Friday 4 July. This event was the very first of its kind which provided all of our students and parents with the opportunity to meet and speak with possible career links. The following providers visited us: The Hadley Manufacturing Group, Wolverhampton University, Juniper Training, West Midlands Police, Carillion Construction, Halesowen College, Dudley College, BMet (Stourbridge College), LATA Training, Black Country Training Group, DB7 Media & Photography, AQA Careers using Maths, Birmingham City University, LEMA Engineering Academy Paragon Skills and Nova Training. All those who attended have commented on how successful this event was and feel they have gained worthwhile advice about their future. If you were unable to attend this event and would like some information please see Mrs Carroll-Grigg, Mrs Tompkins or Mr Patel. Golden Ticket Celebration At the end of the last term one hundred and twenty students received a golden ticket. The ticket was their invite to a special film screening as a reward for excellent attendance (95% or above) and perfect behaviour over the term. The golden tickets created a real buzz amongst students . Geography Field Trip On Monday 19 May and Tuesday 20 May, 58 students from Year 10 GCSE Geography visited Carding Mill Valley, Church Stretton, Shropshire to conduct a river study as part of our GCSE Controlled Assessment. Each individual was part of a group investigating different features of the river at Carding Mill Valley. The toughest part of the field trip was walking up the valley to reach the upper course of the river where we found the source. Whilst walking up the valley, the gradient of the slope steepened especially as we neared the top. Mr Porter lost his footing and fell down the valley which was very unfortunate (and very funny) but luckily he wasn’t hurt. Mr Moreton and Mr Porter demonstrated the different investigations that we needed to carry out at the upper course of the river, including investigating bed load, the valley cross section, a field sketch, the long profile of the river and photographic analysis. We then split into our groups and carried out the investigations at the upper, middle and lower course of the river. Everyone was involved in completing the investigations and once we had been shown how to conduct the experiments, we were finished in no time at all. Overall it was a good experience (helped by the weather) and a great day out. Now for the hard part…..completing our coursework!
