l o o h c S le d id M d o o Crestw January 2010 Dr. Andrew J. Hill, Principal Miss Janet M. Zimmerman, Principal of Curriculum Dr. Andrew Hill Miss Janet Zimmerman Principal Principal of Curriculum Dear Parent/Guardian(s), Dear Parent/Guardian(s), Half of our school year is now over. The third quarter began on Tuesday, January 19th. Second quarter report cards were sent home with students on Friday, January 22nd (unless fees were owed). If you did not receive a report card and are not sure why, please contact us at 330-274-2249. This month I’d like to focus my article on two upcoming measures: one that will increase our ability to communicate with you, and one that will increase our building security. Have you ever wondered if you or your child(ren) are reading at the appropriate speed? I found the following article to be very interesting. Enjoy. What’s the Right Speed…How Fast Should You Read? Taken from Becoming an Achiever by Carolyn Coil, Pieces of Learning, publisher @2004 Like driving, people read at different speeds, depending on the circumstances. “Speed Demon” (Skimming) 1000-2000 words per minute -To locate a specific reference or vocabulary word -To find the answer to a specific question -to get an overview of a chapter, short story, or article First, as most of you are well aware, our district has implemented the AlertNow calling system to relay information to you in a timely manner. To this point, the system has only been used for middle school parent/guardian(s) when the entire district is receiving calls for snow days. We will be testing the system for just middle school parent/guardian(s) on Thursday, January 28th at 7:00 p.m. We want to ensure that the middle school portion of the system is running smoothly in case we need to use it in the future. The call will only go to the primary number you have listed in our system, not all numbers as it does on snow days. “Interstate Travel” (Very Rapid Reading) 500-1000 WPM -To review something you have already read -To read magazines, comic books, or feature articles in newspapers -To read for pleasure, for example an easy novel “Driving in Town” (Rapid Reading) 350-500 WPM Fiction: -To read fiction that is somewhat difficult -To read for characterization, theme, mood, imagery Second, at the request of our Board of Education, we have been studying ways to increase the security of the middle school at the main entrance to the building. We will be installing a buzzer on the front door, complete with an intercom system and camera. This will enable us to communicate with visitors prior to them entering our building, thus increasing the safety of CMS. I do not have an exact date when this system will be in place, but I do know it will be soon. I ask in advance for your patience and understanding as you will now have to be buzzed into the school building before reporting to the main office. As we all know, security is very important, and requires our careful vigilance. Non-Fiction: -To find the main idea and make generalizations -To understand patterns and sequence “Cruisin’ Through McDonald’s” (Moderate Reading) Fiction: -To read complex fiction for characterization, plot analysis, to understand relationships between characters and ideas Non-Fiction: -To note details, compare and contrast information, distinguish between fact and opinion I continue to thank you for your support of CMS. Please feel free to contact me with any questions, concerns, or comments you may have. “Speed Bumps” (Slow Reading) 100-250 WPM Fiction: -To evaluate quality and literary merit Sincerely, Non-Fiction: -To study and master content, including facts and details Andy Hill -To read technical or scientific material -To solve a complex problem -To follow detailed directions -To translate from another language Page 2 Lynne Morrison John Vanags School Counselor Athletic Director Happy New Year! It’s hard to believe how fast this year is moving and there is still a lot for us to get done. Many things are happening at the middle school over the next several weeks. Information will be coming home on a group I will be facilitating for students called, Family Transitions. Topics will involve how divorce impacts families and how students can learn to effectively cope with all of the changes. If you are interested in having your child participate please contact me. The CMS Leadership Committee wants to thank everyone for their generosity over the holiday season. We received great response for our food drive, the toy drive, and our Giving Tree projects. We were able to provide help to several families and their appreciation was overwhelming. We couldn’t have done it without your help. In addition, our Leadership kids spearheaded another successful Spirit Week for students and staff at the end of January. The week consisted of theme days, hallway decorations, and grade level cheers. Thanks to PAC for providing ice cream as an extra treat. The culminating event was the much anticipated Pep Rally and faculty/student basketball game. As always, a great time was had by all. Information has been provided for parent/ teacher conferences. If you have not requested a conference and would like to do so please call. The dates are February 25th and March 4th. In addition, it is the time of year when 8th graders begin the scheduling process for high school. The CHS guidance counselors will be visiting the 8th grade classrooms to provide scheduling information on February 3rd. They will also be providing an information night for all 8th grade parents on February 8th at 6:30 PM in the CMS cafeteria. Please call me with any questions and concerns. Lynne Morrison Most talented athletes want to have a great season and a good year personally; often, however, young athletes do not know what that takes. I recently found some interesting insights from a former athlete of CMS, Bridget Franek, in an article in the Penn State Daily Collegian posted on February 27, 2008: 1.) The difference between the high-caliber athlete and average people is what they do outside of practice because what they do outside of practice will contribute to how they do in practice. 2.) In off season an athlete has to maintain the same intensity and work ethic. 3.) An athlete needs to understand the value of a workout and its purpose; start training intelligently not just actively. 4.) Bridget is intrinsically motivated and wants to achieve great things. She doesn’t do it for the glory, results, or rewards. She just wants to see herself go as far as she can take it. If these ideas are practiced, the rest of a successful athletic career will follow. Another champion, Paige Nemec, a former CMS wrestler and now a senior at CHS says it this way, “It’s not about trying to prove myself to others. It’s about working hard and improving. It’s a challenge; I just like the challenge of pushing myself.” Page just won her 100th match in wrestling. A big feat for anyone, let alone a girl in a predominately male sport. John Vanags, A.D. Page 3 Dr. Andrew J. Hill, Principal Power of the Pen Once again, Crestwood rocked the house at Power of the Pen! As the awards were given out, the announcer’s amplified voice called out one Crestwood winner after another!! It was a fantastic day. At the individual level, seventh grader, Lena Baldwin took 11th place, Hannah Bennett took 7th place and Amy Auble took 4th place. The entire 7th grade team won 2nd place in overall 7th grade standings! In the 8th grade individual standings, Amanda Fosnight took home the 6th place trophy. Twenty-four hours after the competition, the coaches received a phone call. After reading all #1 papers from the competition the state office decided to award Crestwood three additional awards. Director’s choice awards go to Lena Baldwin, Hannah Bennett, and Amanda Fosnight The competition was Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Garfield Middle in Garrettsville School and 12 other schools competed in the district Tournament. Power of the Pen rules dictate that each team is permitted to bring six seventh graders and six eighth graders. However, we had so many good writers come out for Power of the Pen this year, we took more than the usual 2 alternates. We traveled with 3 alternates at each level. During the competition, students write in three rounds and are given a different prompt for each round. Competitors have 40 minutes to write a creative piece. In each round, students write in direct competition with five other writers, however following the round, each student’s piece of work is then judged against all other writers at the tournament. In each grade there were a total of 78 writers. The day was fulfilled with creativity, energy, laughter and some nervousness. Coaches Mrs. Marfy and Mrs. Anfang were proud of all the students who traveled there. The Seventh grade team consists of Brandon Johnson, Amy Auble, Leannah Frances, Lena Baldwin, Madeline Sorrick, Hannah Bennett and alternates, Chelsea Evans, Kira Judd and Savannah Gieb. The eight grade team consists of Amanda Fosnight, Rachel Quesenberry, Samantha Kulish, Emily St. Hiliare, Amanda Krakowski, Olivia Cobb and alternates, Emily Bruyere, Jenna Morgenstern and Amber Vargo. CONGRATULATIONS to the following Power of the Pen writers who qualified for the Regional Competition to be held at KSU on February 20th: Lena Baldwin, Amy Auble, Hannah Bennett, Brandon Johnson, Madeleine Sorrick, Amanda Fosnight, and Samantha Kulish. Congratulations to all of you! Congratulations and GOOD LUCK to our four qualifying champs: Alyssa Jaehn, Amanda Krakowski, Amanda Fosnight, Roni Sargent. These four will represent CMS at the District Spelling Bee at Maplewood Career Center on February 9th at 7:00P.M. The Spelling Bee participants included: 8th graders - Tyler Gall, Amanda Krakowski, Alyssa Jaehn, Amanda Fosnight, Nathan Silcox, Makayla Garrison, Roni Sargent, Grant Bates, Rebecca Pochedly, Jacob Lann , 7th Graders — Morgan Giamo, Madeleine Sorrick, Daniel O’Sickey, David Bowles, Christian Rosenfeldt, Amber Gibbons, Lauren Crislip, Dane Etto, Chelsea Evans , 6th Graders— Lauren Smith, Alexander Bowser, Eliza Soukenik, Samuel Oliphant, Isabel Hysing, Rhiannon Aleynika, Caitlin McSwain We are all cheering for you! The Athletic Department held a fundraiser concert featuring Jacob Vanags. Hailed as a talented piano rocker by critics, Vanags provides much needed diversity in today’s music scene. Accompanied by strings, horns and percussion on many tracks it’s his catchy vocals and strokes of the piano that continually stand out. Of his new EP, Vanags has said, “The title Pulses are Pluses really captures the heart of this EP. I hope the concept of understanding how we all have so much to be positive about in this life, even in the lowest of times, will really come across with this new energetic sound.” Jacob donated his time and talent for this fundraiser and is the son of John Vanags, Athletic Director at CMS. Winning the T-shirt design contest…. PRICELESS Sixth grader Isabel Hysing was recently named the winner of the Portage County Educational Service Center’s Math 24 T-Shirt Design Contest. Isabel’s design “TShirt….$12, Bus to the tournament…$4, Math 24 cards…$22, winning the tournament...PRICELESS” will be made for all county participants to wear at the tournament to be held on February 24 at Maplewood Career Center. Isabel also was awarded a free entrance to the tournament. This is the second year in a row that a CMS sixth grader has won the contest. Congratulations, Isabel! U.S. Army Specialist Travis Ragle visits Sixth Grade Recently, U.S. Army Specialist Travis Ragle visited 6th grade students to share his experience serving in Sadr City, Iraq. Ragle, a 2005 graduate of Crestwood, returned home from a yearlong deployment to Iraq with many stories and much knowledge about the Middle East. The students enjoyed listening to Ragle’s adventures, asking cultural questions, and even trying out some of the drills and exercises used to train military soldiers. While they may still have work to do to become real soldiers for the United States, several students enjoyed the workout and broke a sweat. Ragle continues to serve in the U.S. Army at Fort Bragg, North Carolina with his wife, Maureen, and his dog, Bodey. Ragle is very excited and thankful to be back home. The Crestwood Lions Club will clean and repair the used eyewear, which will then be distributed to people who can’t afford to buy their own. There are over 250 million visually impaired people worldwide, many of whom can be helped with a pair of glasses. Donating glasses is easy. All you have to do is take your old pair to the Leo’s Club donation bin at the Crestwood Middle School office. We can make a huge difference in the lives of many, but we need your help.
