hen the taxi driver who picks you up
at the airport tells you he is really a
film producer and a younger version
of Heidi Klum serves you breakfast … then you
know you have arrived.
In Los Angeles, being a star is an attitude.
Near­ly everyone is willing to do something to
achieve such status. In the grey light of dawn, the
day’s early joggers make their way along the
beach of Santa Monica, while along the paths of
Venice skaters and rollerbladers show off their
impressive physiques. Local fitness studios are
both a workplace and a social centre. Neverthe­
less, a friendly, easy-going atmosphere is perva­
sive and the sun nearly always shines – no com­
parison at all to the neurotic hustle and bustle
and chilly winter of New York.
But beyond the casual California lifestyle,
the city’s character is hard to figure out. Los
­Angeles seems like a sea of villages flowing into
one an­other: Mexico City, Little Tokyo and the
Riviera are only a stone’s throw apart. This
­vi­brant blend of cultural opposites is as refresh­
ing as it is stimu­lating. And if you are some­times
not quite sure what universe you’re in: hey, this
is Hollywood! And that woman at the next table
really is Kate Hudson in person.
