THE VIEW dedicates this second exhibition project to the American artist CHRIS LARSON. With the presentation of his new, especially for this exhibition created video work Heavy Rotation, the films Crush Collision (2006) and Deep North (2008), with photographs, drawings and sceneries of film sets he gives an extensive insight into his manifold artwork. Chris Larson, born 1966 in St. Paul, Minnesota, has become internationally known through archaic constructions of objects and surreal video narrations. As a motive leading theme wooden machineries appear which, like inventions of Leonardo da Vinci, seem to be medieval torture instruments or relics of a gone by epoch. THE VIEW CONTEMPORARY ART SPACE is a new platform for contemporary art and experimental exhibition forms. At exposed locations above the Swiss shore of Lake Constance, three subterranean exhibition rooms and a studio gallery will offer a profound insight into international contemporary art once a year. Actual positions on the themes of space, light, sound, photography, media art and moving pictures will be focused. The historical water reservoir, built in 1900 of massive concrete, has been reconstructed sensibly and, adaption to the requirements of multi media presentation techniques were implemented, which transformed this location into an extraordinary exhibition space for spatially based installations. Equally the military bunker in Berlingen and the clear, reduced architecture of the air-raid shelter in Salenstein, built in the late 1980s, allows a unique subterranean encounter with contemporary art. As a connection point and visitor centre between the subterranean project rooms exists a studio gallery, in which changing exhibitions on the art of photography are being exhibited and objects of the exhibiting artists can be acquired. . &254(7),%. THE VIEW CONTEMPORARY ART SPACE 1 THE VIEW widmet das zweite Ausstellungsprojekt dem amerikanischen Künstler CHRIS LARSON. In CHRIS LARSON’S new video work HEAVY ROTATION, which will be shown in the historic water reservoir of THE VIEW, the artist declares himself as the protagonist of the story. The film sets, invented and built by Chris Larson, reach over three rooms lying on top of each other in a not nearer defined architecture. Through the eye of the camera the spectators look into the studio of the artist, who following the rotation of a turn table continuously draws circles onto a paper. With great vehemence and obsessive absent-mindedness the movement is continuously repeated and at the end leads to a perforation of paper and base. Chris Larson climbs through the created hole into the room below and restarts with his Sisyphus work. In the dugout, a newly added exhibition room of THE VIEW, Chris Larson combines two historical events in a media confrontation, which happened in Waco, Texas. With WACO SIEGE he shows a wooden model of the building complex, which was the scene of a mass suicide in 1993 and hit the headlines worldwide. And with the film CRUSH COLLISION he reflects the as an “event” planned collision of two trains in Waco in 1896, which turned into a catastrophe and claimed many victims. In the air raid shelter Chris Larson presents his video work DEEP NORTH. Here too events between intuition and doubt are ignited. With a huge-sized wooden machine, three young women move cylindrical-formed chunks of ice through the inside of a wooden house, which seems to have been left in a hurry as if a conveyor belt has taken possession of the room and a new ice age has started. CRUSH COLLISON VIDEO STILL DEEP NORTH VIDEO STILL Chris Larson comments in his art industrial production methods and visually falls back onto archaic images. He confronts us with inexplicable processes and thwarts the rhetoric of our information age with its emphasis on productivity, efficiency and rationality. HEAVY ROTATION VIDEO STILL
