so we ordered a 22" Hedgehog. The soil conditions ended up being

HOW
WE
OPERATE
Our signature red tools are built in a state-of-the-art manufacturing plant in
Santa Maria, CA. Our tools and parts are welded, machined, milled and
turned using Computer Numerical Control (CNC) machining and robotic
welding centers. Our engineers use Computer Aided Manufacturing
(CAM) programs to design our HDD tooling. Utilizing CAM and CNC
automation provides consistant quality, flexability in design, and cuts down
manufacturing time; a savings we pass down to our customers by providing
high quality tools at reasonable prices. To further cut manufacturing costs,
we utilize approximately 1,000 photovoltaic (solar) panels to help run
the manufacturing and office systems. So when you see the “Made with

manufactured to the highest standards, they are made “green” as well.

This past March, Melfred Borzall President Dick Melsheimer was honored by the North American
Society for Trenchless Technology as a “Legend of HDD”. This award recognized his 50+ years
of innovations in tools and technologies for installing underground utilities.
With a Mechanical Engineering degree from Cal Poly University, San Luis Obispo, Dick
Melsheimer brought new ideas to Melfred Welding, the company that his father, Fred
Melsheimer, had started in 1946. In addition to drill bit and reamer designs, Dick helped develop
the first hydraulic drilling equipment for installing underground utilities, including the patented
DynaMole. Dick also improved the safety of drilling operations by adding electrical insulation to
the tools he developed.
In the 1960s, Dick was part of a design team that developed and tested the industry’s first electronic drill bit locator, the predecessor to today’s HDD tracking systems. In the late 1980s Dick
and Melfred Borzall produced the Sure Shot Directional Drilling System, which had many firsts,
including the Zapalert, the first electric strike alarm for HDD, and the first use of electric over
hydraulic control valves to give the driller better control, visibility of the drill operations and improved safety.
Dick Melsheimer continues to lead Melfred Borzall as the company develops and produces the
world's finest HDD tooling. To help celebrate this award, throughout this catalog you will find

HYDRAULIC DRILL TRACK. Melfred Borzall founder Fred Melsheimer watches
the operation of an early Melfred Borzall drill track. This versatile machine had
hydraulic drill rotation and manual powered feed. Like current HDD systems,
the bore was started into the ground at a slant. Bore path corrections were
made using pot holes along the bore using hooks and alignment guides.

This past October we used a 5" Steep Taper UltraBit on a job in
Park Falls, WI. The 750' bore was in very rocky and gravel conditions.
We also ran into some solid rock and were able to drill through it. The
bit held up very under very tough conditions.

The best feature of the Eagle Claw is the replaceable teeth. We’ve always had good luck
with this bit. We used the Eagle Claw on a job
at Edwards Air Force Base in California and ran
into hard, decomposed granite that was more like
solid granite. The ground conditions were so hard
we couldn’t use a regular duck-bill bit,
nor could it be trenched. The Eagle Claw broke
through the hard ground and we were able to complete multiple bores up to 300'. Without the
Eagle Claw we would not have
been able to complete this part
of the project.

JOB SITE
Seth McDuffee and Beau Krause, with EBC Enterprises, Inc., Hygiene, Colorado, have
been using Melfred Borzall Terminator reamers on their 100,000 lb. rigs for years.
When they got a job crossing the Platte River in Ft. Lupton, Colorado four times at 2,000
feet and 55 feet deep per bore, they knew they had to use their 360,000 lb rig. The soil
conditions went from sand/cobble, to very hard clay, to sandstone and it looked like they
had four difficult bores ahead of them.
Knowing that the old school hole-openers and wagon-wheel style reamers would take
too long, they made a call to Melfred Borzall distributors, Todd Phillips and Dana Villiere,
at HDD Parts Plus of Colorado for a recomendation on what reamers would hold up to
that kind of use. In turn, Todd and Dana contacted MBI engineers Jose Mierzejewski, Eric
Gonzalez and Eric Melsheimer to come up with a solution.
The MBI engineers designed and built Terminator reamers strong enough to withstand
the 50,000 pounds of rotational torque and 360,000 pounds of pull-back. Using a
combination of Terminator (pgs. 64-65) and Barrel reamers (pg. 67), EBC Enterprises
completed all four bores with a substantial savings of time and money.
