A big thank you as well to Mark Twain Principal, Melissa Patin for allowing
the three flats of signs to be delivered to Mark Twain and for allowing us to assemble them on site!
National Night Out is on October 6. If you would like to volunteer to sponsor a
block party, please connect with Karen Spearman, whose contact information
can be found on the back of the Sentinel. Also see Karen’s article on Page 4.
Remember all those fantastic photos from our neighborhood July 4th parade
and carnival? Thank you to neighbor Patricia Homesely and Whimsical Tree
Photography for contributing to such a great annual event.
The Traffic Study Committee has requested neighbors to call 311 and report
any obstructed views at intersections. We are working with builders to angle
fencing when building on corner lots. If you would like to help with the Traffic Study Committee, please contact Nicole Shah on the back page of the Sentinel.
Thank you to Austin Landscaping (www.austinlandscaping.net) for the gracious donation of the colorful annuals on the endcaps of the esplanades with
BPHA monuments! Their contribution continues to make our neighborhood
more attractive!
Finally, let’s continue to ensure this a safe year in our neighborhood. Please be
vigilant about securing your houses, cars and valuables. Have the constable’s
number programmed in your phone if you are dues paying member and be sure
to report any suspicious activity.

SECURITY UPDATE

10 Ways to Make Burglars Go Elsewhere
It would be great if the right doormat kept
your home safe. Nothing can strip away the
peace and comfort of your home quicker
than a burglary. The financial and emotional
toll is awful — and likely avoidable if you
focus on the 3 D’s: Deter, Detect and Delay.
1. Meet your neighbors and build a relationship with them. Having
neighbors you can trust is like being home all the time. Give them
your spare key instead of hiding it on the porch. Tell them when
you are leaving town, don’t tell Facebook. Encourage each other to
report ANY person or vehicle or activity that seems unusual. Our
deputies are delighted to stop and question suspicious persons.
This is how crimes are prevented and solved.
2. Fix your broken doorbell. Burglars often ring the bell and if no
one answers, they are coming in. They avoid occupied houses.
3. Button your lip. Don’t talk about your upcoming trip on Facebook or with the yardman or your housekeeper’s nephew with a
small drug problem. And wait to post your photos until you return.
4. Don’t leave notes or a key for workmen or delivery services. Burglars can read, and they can read between the lines. From the
street, a note looks like the all-clear sign to thieves.
5. Install a first-class, monitored alarm system with yard signs, a
loud siren, glass-break sensors, door & window contacts and a
wireless dialer in case your phone and power lines are cut. And
USE IT. Highly visible surveillance cameras are a huge deterrent.
6. Install exterior flood lights on all 4 sides of your home. Timers
and motion detectors are great but the key is MORE LIGHT. On
the interior, use lamps on timers all day long, not just at night.
7. If you have a dog door, use a double-sided, keyed deadbolt so a
long-armed burglar can’t just reach through and unlock the door.
8. Harden the target - stronger exterior doors with expensive deadbolts and heavy-duty strike plates. Two locks on every window.
9. Don’t leave town without joining the neighborhood Constable Patrol Program so that you can use the amazing Vacation Watch service. That puts a deputy in your yard every day and provides a lot
more attention to your home during their regular patrols.
10. See your house the way a burglar does. They look for toys in the
yard and signs of a busy, distracted family coming and going on a
fixed schedule. Bring in the toys, as well as the mail as soon as it
arrives and the trash can soon after pick-up. Keep your garage
door closed. Thieves are patient, and they watch for patterns.

NATIONAL NIGHT OUT COMES TO FACEBOOK
by Karen Spearman, NNO Chair
For everyone wanting to get more information about this year’s National Night Out via social media, there is
now a community page posted on Facebook so “Like Us” at Braeswood National Night Out. Constable
Rosen’s office is giving a big FB boost and Nextdoor.com also has an event set up--so pass the word along. As
easy as it is to host and focus on the fun part of NNO, there is a serious side too. The best protection a community can provide is through reaching out to one another and staying aware of suspicious activity in the area. We
are very fortunate to have the additional support of the Constable Patrol to follow up on reports to ensure our
safety. With many homes unoccupied due to flooding, this service has been a key element in deterring vandalism or theft, preventing loss on top of loss. Our patrol officers make a visit to each host to introduce themselves
and provide an opportunity to discuss any concerns so if that is of special interest, please mention that when you
sign up to host. Materials such as a party check list, invitations and sign-in sheets are available to make planning simple. Everyone interested in hosting a gathering for your block, please contact Karen Spearman at
[email protected] and follow up emails to those already hosting will be coming out soon.
TWO-WAY COMMUNICATION WITH CONSTABLE PRECINCT 1 ON SOCIAL MEDIA!

LONGFELLOW ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
by Jessica Evans
Welcome back to school Longfellow Leopards! Longfellow kicked the school year off with a Meet and Greet Night on
Thursday August 20 where students and parents could meet their teachers, buy school gear, learn about after school activities, discover opportunities to get involved and more. Longfellow will host an Open House night on Thursday September
10th from 5-7 where parents can come and hear from their child's teacher about what they will be learning that year, classroom procedures, upcoming events and more.
Longfellow will be hosting a Middle School Informational night in the Fall (time and date still being finalized-check
Longfellow website for details). Middle schools from all across our area will be in attendance with informational tables
and school representatives available to answer questions. This is a great opportunity for families of 4th and 5th graders to
a get a jump start on the middle school decision process. This event is open to the community. Last year Pershing Middle
School, Pin Oak Middle School, Lanier Middle School, Johnston MiddleSchool, Young Men's College Preparatory Academy, Young Women's College Preparatory Academy, and Fondren Middle School were in attendance. Hope to see you
there!

MARK TWAIN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL
by Lauren Bireley
I recently had the pleasure of chatting with Ann Ainsworth, a neighborhood resident since 1981 and one of the first
“Friends of Twain” who put the school on the path of becoming what it is today. Ann was not only there at the beginning
of the school’s transformation, she also taught at Mark Twain from 1994 - 2009. We have such a wonderful history of
parents making a positive impact at Mark Twain and I am so grateful that Ann took the time to share her story.
Ann and her husband, Jim, moved to Braeswood Place in 1981. At the time, Mark Twain Elementary was next to rundown apartments (to put it mildly) and surrounded by a barbed wire fence. As Ann relayed, "the fence was not intended
to keep people out, but to keep the children in." While most of the neighborhood parents’ solution to the lack of a viable
public school option was private school, with four children, Jim and Ann hoped for a different solution.
A few years later, Ann, Beth Fowler, and Debbie Weymouth (two other women with whom she became friends and who
also hoped for a viable public school) created the Friends of Mark Twain group to work towards improving Mark Twain.
Because the women were all moms, the Friends of Mark Twain Group was part babysitting co-op and part "grass roots
movement." First, they took a census and discovered that only 30% of the neighborhood’s school age children attended
Twain. From there, the women (taking turns babysitting, of course) hosted neighborhood coffees with the principal and
the teachers, and began planning for a new future for Mark Twain. The Friends of Mark Twain and the faculty and staff
they spoke with decided it was time for a change, and that the Friends’ goal was to have a substantial number of
neighborhood children attend Mark Twain in 1988, in hopes of sparking other neighborhood parents to the same. They
prepared to “take a leap.”
Around the same time, other things started happening. The Homeowner's Association bought one of the apartment
complexes close to the school. Subsequently, Bob Barnes, president of the Homeowner’s Association, formed two
nonprofit partnerships and bought two more complexes. The Stella Link Redevelopment group formally organized and
began creating the beautiful campus park we have now. The Friends also found support for their efforts by reaching out to
area superintendent, Kaye Stripling, who gifted Twain with the Suzuki violin program and Adventure Play, an
afterschool program. Ms. Stripling also helped them to recruit a wonderful, new Kindergarten teacher and to improve the
Kindergarten classrooms. The Friends also hosted the first school fundraiser at the Southside Place Recreation Center.
These women were busy building.
Post enrollment of the first Friends of Twain class, changes kept happening. Brad Raffle, school board representative,
was instrumental in getting the Literacy Development Center at Twain. Pansy Gee and Eileen Schwartz, two
exceptional Twain teachers, successfully wrote the proposal for the Literacy Development Center. About the same time,
the Friends of Twain leadership was passed on to Laura Barnes, Stephanie Foy, and Cheryl Karian, who continued
promoting the school. A bond issue came up for improving the schools in HISD and PTO Presidents Valorie Steinhart
and Brenda Blackwood along with Principal Joyce Dauber worked to get a new school building. The momentum kept
building from there, eventually resulting in the school we all love and cherish today.
Ann stressed that the impetus for all the changes to our wonderful school was people. Parents, educators, and neighbors
all came together in a very powerful and very beautiful way. They created a piece of history, and gifted us with a
magnificent school and neighborhood. When I asked Ann for advice to the current Mark Twain parents, her advice was
simple: "The teachers are fabulous. Keep them happy." Our current principal, Melissa Patin, arrived early in the process
as a teacher and a counselor. She has worked very hard to maintain the school’s legacy of cooperation between parents,
teachers, and administrators- what it takes to build a strong school. We are very grateful to have such a remarkable
principal with invaluable experience from her different positions within the school and with unwavering support for both
the students and the school.

PERSHING MIDDLE SCHOOL NEWS
by Priscilla Kennedy
As the school year begins, we welcome our new 6 th grade Pandas and ask our Braeswood Place neighbors to make note of
Pershing’s school hours: 8:25 a.m.-3:55 p.m. Principal Kim Heckman received great news this summer that all of
Pershing’s Advanced Placement Spanish students passed their AP exams, with many receiving the highest score possible.
Props to Ms. Parsons-Lopez and her students for this remarkable achievement. Football season kicked off during the
first week of school at Pershing, and Coach David Burgan says he looks forward to getting out on the field again. “We
practice and play hard and do the best we can every time,” according to Burgan. Our Braeswood Place neighbors are
invited to come out and cheer on the Pandas; the 8th grade team plays on September 16 and 29 at Butler Stadium starting
at 7 pm, and the 7th grade team has its first home game at Pershing against Johnston Middle School on September 21 at 5

GARDEN OF THE MONTH
by Jackie Addington
September's Yard of the month is located at 3810 Drummond and is the home of Jose and Magdalena
Ramirez. This wonderful suggestion was sent as a result of last month's request for special yards. The focus of my graduate school research was on the home as a learning center. Sometimes the learning is deliberate and sometimes it is vicarious. The Ramirez couple successfully learned gardening techniques in their respective childhood homes using both of
these processes: how to cultivate, transplant, and grow from seed. Much of their vast collection of plants was successfully
gifted from others. The home is framed by live oak, dwarf magnolia, and crape myrtle trees planted during the
Ramirez' 30 years there including a rebuild. The beds abound with many varieties of cacti, fruit trees, herbs, and native
plants. The drive way and the sidewalk leading to the front steps are lined by colorful beds of green and purple sweet potato plants, kalanchoe, wandering jew, dusty miller and dianthus. Pots of dracena, pencil cacti, picue, moringa, aloe vera,
yucca, rosemary and other native plants can be found in neat beds in both the front and back yard. Willingness to share
their knowledge and love of plants seems inherent in this generous couple. I came away with lessons learned and two
beautiful pots of succulents. I appreciate their thoughtfulness and am happy to circulate their message of "paying it forward".

A FRIENDLY REQUEST FROM THE KILMARNOCH DITCH NEIGHBORS
We live next to the hill that borders the two block long Kilmarnoch ditch and street. Although this is not an
official “DOG PARK”, throughout the day and through many hours of the night, people in the neighborhood
and outside the neighborhood bring their animals to play and take a stroll. We enjoy everyone who comes
along. However, we do not like what is left behind.
Please be courteous and pick up after your animals and yourself - dog poop and bottles and papers - then we
will have a clean, healthy and enjoyable living environment for all. Thank you!

How Advisors (Should) Add Value
What is your advisor doing for you? Hopefully, adding value to investment returns. There are a number of
ways an advisor can do this. But they are not necessarily the ways most people think.
The difference between a portfolio that reaches your goals and one that doesn’t is probably not an advisor with a
mystical ability to pick the right stock or jump in and out of markets at just the right time. Research shows that
asset allocation is far more important to returns than stock picking or market timing. Asset allocation is the
division of your portfolio among different kinds of assets such as stocks, bonds, cash, alternatives, etc.
c
And a recent study, Putting a Value on Your Value: Quantifying Vanguard Advisors’ Alpha, found that an advisor
an add an extra 3% to your returns after taxes and fees. That 3% comes from an advisor not only helping you find
the right allocation and diversification, but from ensuring you don’t pay too much for an investment or too much
tax on the returns. It also comes from an advisor rebalancing regularly to keep holdings aligned with strategy.
Finally, it comes from an advisor who helps you stick with a strategy during downturns, avoiding the buy-high-sell-low pattern that is the ruin
of many investors.
I believe there are even more ways to add value to investment returns, by making sure all the moving parts of your financial life—from
investments to taxes to insurance to family expenses—work together like a well-oiled machine. That takes a professional who communicates
regularly with you, understands your family’s goals and works diligently and without bias on your behalf. Do you have that?

There Is a
Difference...
Just as working with a top tier investment advisor, a skilled tax planner or a worldrenowned medical specialist can make a difference in your results, choosing a
luxury home expert offers extraordinary results. Agents who have earned the
prestigious CERTIFIED LUXURY HOME MARKETING SPECIALIST® designation
have earned this special recognition as a result of special training and verified
buying and selling performance.
